Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian commu-nity, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Anyone who is ill or homebound please let me know so I can schedule a
visit. Contact Lori Ward at 792-4242.
Thank You . . .
Thanks to all who attended the Appreciation events last weekend for Deacon Dan Goetz. A special thanks to those who organized and worked at the two events to express our appre-ciation to Deacon Dan for his ministry among us.
Thank You . . .
Dear Sacred Heart Family,
Thank you so much to all of you for the recep-tions held last weekend at Sacred Heart for Lydia and me.
I know that many hands were involved to make it a special weekend for us. You succeeded in doing that and our hearts were touched in many ways.
The food and refreshments were excellent, the decorations were perfectly themed and your presence was a blessing.
Thank you for the very generous monetary gift, your many cards, well wishes, prayers and en-couragement. To say the least the outpouring was “mind blowing.”
Bishop Amos once said that when we were or-dained we would never really know what to ex-pect. The day that I was ordained I never ex-pected that I would have the privilege to serve as a deacon at Sacred Heart Parish.
Lydia and I are thankful for the ten plus years we have been here and we love our Sacred Heart Family.
Thanks for a weekend we will not forget!
Please pray for us, as we will continue to pray for you.
Dan and Lydia

2019 Lenten Adult Small Groups
The Thursday small group will resume the second part of its study on C.S.
Lewis’ Mere Christianity on Thursday, March 7 at 1:30 pm. The group will
meet in the adult room in McCann Center.
The Sunday evening small group will begin March 10th, Sunday evening at 7:00 PM. The group will study Sunday by Sunday. Sunday by Sunday is a way to reflect on the Gospels throughout the Liturgical year. Sunday by Sunday is a publication of the Sisters of St. Joseph in St. Paul, Minnesota. It begins and ends with prayer. Its questions inspire adults to share the faith they live, and to wrestle with what Jesus in the Gospels asks of us in our time, in our neighborhoods, in our world.
The Sunday morning small group will begin March 10th at 10:15 AM. The group will study Matthew, the King and His Kingdom. This exciting study brings the Gospel to life and draws you closer to Christ. You will see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament, establishes the New Law, and inau-gurates the Kingdom of Heaven. Set in the rich context of Jesus’ life, Matthew shows us who Jesus is and what his life and teachings mean for us today.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
The prophet Jeremiah minces no words in today’s first reading: “Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings … whose heart turns away from the LORD.” And the prophet’s “beatitude” re-sembles that of Jesus’ teaching in today’s Gospel read-ing when he proclaims: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD.” Good stew-ards understand that what the world values is not con-sistent with Gospel values. They realize that God has placed in their midst all the gifts, charisms, and re-sources needed to bring Christ to a world desperately in need of his loving presence. But to exercise good stewardship over God’s gifts takes a great deal of trust. How does our stewardship reflect our trust in the Lord? What did we do today to give others hope in Christ Jesus?
God brings us through difficult experiences and always leads us to life. Depend on the Holy Spirit to guide you on the path of life. (Luke 4:1-13). If you think God is calling you, call Fr. Thom Hennen, diocesan vocations director at 563-324-1911, or write: HennenT@ diodav.org.
Parish Scholarships Parish scholarship applications are available on the counter outside of Ann’s office. These are for graduat-ing high school seniors from Sacred Heart, and are available for college or trade school. Completed applications must be received by May 1. 2019.

Why does the Church rightfully cele-
brate marriage, family, and religious
life but neglect the equally important
celibate single life? Perhaps if this vo-
cation got the respect and attention it
deserves, we’d have fewer people rushing
into bad relationships and weak marriages.
Our vocation in life is a gift from God to become a living response to God’s love. God invites people to holiness and service through marriage, the single life, the priesthood, the diaconate or the religious life. Lest the single life be overlooked, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “We must also remember the great number of single persons who…are especially close to Je-sus’ heart and therefore deserve the special affec-tion and active solicitude of the Church, espe-cially of pastors” (CCC 1658). It adds that the doors of homes “and of the great family which is the Church must be open to all of them.” Like the gift of one’s vocation, celibacy also is a gift from God that’s offered back to the Church. Jesus himself chose celibacy, not be-cause he disapproved of marriage or family life, but for the sake of the kingdom. He was wedded to his mission in bringing about a universal fam-ily that follows God’s will. To be celibate, then—whether as a single person or in conse-crated life—isn’t upheld in and of itself, but for the reign of God. Whatever the vocation and however it’s lived out, “all cooperate in the building up of the Body of Christ” in a spirit of equality and dignity according “to each one’s own condition and function” (Canon 208).

Around the Table
with the Catholic Foodie or a better title for Jeff Young’s book could be “Food Meets Faith in the Holy Land”. Jeff Young of New Orleans is the founder of The Catholic Foodie blog and podcast. He hosts a TV show and speaks about how faith can grow through cooking and sharing recipes and ideas on social media. In this book he explores the cuisine of the Holy Land. He shares his own family experiences of sharing and preparing meals together and the bond these creates. In his recipes he uses fresh seasonal ingredients. There is something for both the novice cook and the experi-enced culinary expert can try. As Chef John Besh writes, “This book is delicious culmination of Young’s exploration of his passions for both food and faith. I share his same enthusiasm for faith Holy Land and table and he bridges all three through ap-proachable recipes and insightful anecdotes.” If you are looking for some new creative ways to prepare healthy meals this is a good book for you. Persons who enjoy lamb will find some new recipes too. The Library is open after weekend Masses and Monday, & Friday mornings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jer 17:5–8; 1 Cor 15:12, 16–20; Lk 6:17, 20–26
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers a rather radical call to holiness. Many of us have a hard time accepting that we are all called to such levels of morality. Yet, read to whom Jesus is speaking here. The Gospel says his audience is everyone: his apostles, his disciples, and a large number of other people from around the region. The Second Vatican Council offers a re-minder when it says, “Fortified by so many and such powerful means of salvation, all the faithful, whatever their condition or state, are called by the Lord, each in his own way, to that per-fect holiness whereby the Father himself is perfect” (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church [Lumen Gentium], 11). A key to progress in any personal area is keeping hun-gry, never being fully satisfied. The same goes for our faith and relationship with our Lord. If our goal is to be comfortable, to follow the path of least resistance, then mediocrity is our goal. Jesus is anything but mediocre. He proposes to us a high moral standard that isn’t reached by coasting. Our souls are hungry by design. They are never fully satisfied in this life because we desire the Infinite— we desire God. Luckily, our Lord not only proposes a high moral ideal
of holiness, but he also gives us his very Spirit so we can reach the heights he proposes. And so we can pray w i t h S t . A u g u s t i n e , “Give me what you command, and command what you will.”
