    UP PEP SQUAD

Different routine, same excellenceBy Patrick Leonard Mayo

PRESSURE IS ALWAYS present in the world ofsports, and when the stakes get higher, thosewho cannot handle it fold and end up on the

    losing end.

    For the UAAP Cheerdance

defending champion UP PepSquad, they plan to thrive un-der pressure without focusingtoo much on defending theirthree-year reign and winningan unprecedented ninth titlethis coming Sunday at the an-nual UAAP Cheerdance Com-petition (CDC) at the Mall of

    Asia Arena.Theres always pressure

kahit wala yung mga factorsna ito, (defending the title)

said assistant coach NJ Anto-nio. Its really more of thepressure of performing the bestthat we can, and not because

we want to win or everyonewants us to win or lose.

Training for excellenceThe team which is com-

posed of 25 members, three of

which are rookies and virtuallyhalf already on their final year, trains five hours a day and sev-en days a week if possible, ac-cording to Antonio. We stillhave weaknesses in almost allareas, but in all areas, we tryto improve, he added.

And with the rest of thecompetition improving annual-ly, he believes the team needsto keep on pushing for excel-lence. Perennial threat FEU

Cheering Squad and old rivalUST Salinggawi Dance Troupeare eager to snatch the crown

while the other teams are look-ing to make things interesting.Trusting the routine

For co-captain Lian Melegri-to, its the anticipation of com-

pleting the routine thats help-ing them overcome the pres-sure. Dahil sobrang taas ngbelief namin sa routine, masnangingibabaw yung excite-ment, said the Sports Sciencemajor.

But the team had to scram-

ble a bit when head coachLalaine Perena left for Francelast July to promote culturaldance. Nag-start na kamimag-practice before she left

para kahit papaano, may skele-ton na yung routine. But whenshe came back last August 29,doon pa lang niya talaga natu-tukan yung routine, saidMelegrito.

Our routine for this year isa bit opposite to the vibe our

routine last year exuded. Lahatmakikisali sa routine kahit dika taga-UP. Mafi-feel mo hindisiya pang UP lang, lahat maka-ka-relate, added co-captain Bi-

    en Insigne.Crowd support

Historically, fans and sup-porters of UP come out duringthe CDC to show their supportand this year, Antonio hopesthat the UP community will de-liver yet again. We hope that

they will join us during theperformance. Were expectingthem to perform with us, notafter and not before, but dur-ing, he ended.

I believe that theyhave more expertiseon this. Ang cheer-dance is only found inUAAP. Thats the rea-son why we talkabout the mechanicsso it would be clear, said Kamus. She ischair of the UAAPspecial events com-

volleyball, are dis-tributed and subhost-ed on a rotation basisby UAAP memberschools.

    The rules for the

event are certainlydifferent this year. Forone, the highest pos-sible score a teamcould get is 800points. It is dividedinto two categories:400 points for danceand 400 points forcheer.

The panel ofjudges for Dance in-clude Douglas Nierras

of Powerdance; JonSupan of the Manoeu-vres; Avel Bautista ofAirdance; and NancyCrowe of Hotlegs. The criteria for judg-ing are 20 points for

overall effect; 30points for choreogra-phy; 20 points fortechnique; and 30points for group exe-cution. The highesttotal score each dance

    judge can give is 100points.

The panel ofjudges for Cheer in-clude Ma. Regina Tan-

juatco, BernardDaniel Puatu, ArchieCecil Meris, AlejandroMendelebar, and

judge for the pyra-mid; one for stunts;one for tumbling; andone for tosses. Eachcriterion can earn ateam 100 points.

    There will also betwo international

judges including YeeMing Tan and LimChee Wei. The head

judge is Paula IsabelNunag. She is also thetechnical/penalty

judge. She is in-charge of deductingpoints from the team. She will lead the

judges to choose awinner in the event ofa tie.

For the sake oftransparency, all de-ductions incurred bythe team will be re-leased to the coachesright after the teamsperformances.

If coaches have aquestion in the judg-ing, the commissionerand the head judge

will be available to allthe coaches. Pwedenilang lapitan after, stressed Kamus.

    Another initiativethat will be implement-

ed this year is that allscores of all the teams

    NU PEP SQUAD

Ready to bag the grand prizeBy Randolph B. Leongson

TWO years ago, a member of perennial cheer-dance contenders FEU found herself in thelair of cellar-dwellers NU, tasked to turn the

fortunes around for the Jhocson-based cheerleaders.Though she didnt promise anything, the petite lady

told school officials, Malayo pa tayo. Ayusin munanatin yung training program natin.

Fast forward to 2013, look-ing ahead to the UAAP Season76 cheerdance competitions, she now said, Were aimingfor the championship.

That lady is NU Pep Squadcoach Ghicka Bernabe. Togeth-er with her former teammatesin the FEU Cheering Squad, they have turned the fortunesfor the NU Pep Squad, finish-ing third in last years mid-sea-son spectacle, and topping this

    years National CheerleadingChampionship, edging famed

opposition in FEU, Perpetualand Central Colleges of thePhilippines (CCP).

Parang na-break yung his-tory kasi first time nakapasokng NU sa Top 3. Kakaiba yungeffect. Feeling namin last year, para na rin kaming nag-cham-pion, she said.

All of those accomplish-ments came from one goal, mabago yung perception ngtao (sa NU). Ang gusto naminay ma-wow (yung mga tao) saatin at aabangan nila tayo next

year. Masarap sa feeling na tin-uturing na kaming threat ngibang teams.

Though winning the NCCdoesnt really guarantee anyfor the Bulldogs, Bernabe saidthat the tilt helped them a lotin preparing for this years

cheerdance competitions. Gus-to naming i-prove that we cando more than stunts, na kayanaming makipagsabayan sadance, something we lackedlast year.

With only two membersfrom last years group gone,NU Pep Squad will bring a ma-tured team, ready to take theBulldogs crew to the next stepin their quest for immortality.

One of those brave souls is

team captain Adrian Alban, amember of the squad since hewas still a high school sopho-more. The 20-year-old BS

Management major has experi-enced all the hardships thesquad had to face.

We started practicingthen na wala pa kamingmats. Ngayon, ibang-iba na,he said. Kaya nung nanalokami last year, Sobrang

proud, kumbaga, from zeroto hero kami.

Though reeling from the tri-umphs the NU Pep Squad hasachieved, the group said theyare not really pressured as op-posed to the ones felt by theother teams.

Hindi kami pressured, rather, we use it as a motiva-tion para ma-lead kamipataas, Bernabe said. Excitedna nga kaming lahat para sa

Sunday eh!As with every team, the NUcrew regards UP as theirbiggest threat, but Bernabe

worries more on her teamsroutine. Ang pinakamalakingthreat sa amin is kung hindinamin ma-execute yung pri-naktis namin.

Looking ahead for the bigday, a day they have preparedever since summer, the young

NU mentor promised that theyare sure to bring the crowd onits feet again, the same waythey have done for the pasttwo years.

May bagong stunts kami naipapakita na hindi pa naga-gawa ng kahit na sino, shesaid. Kung na-surprise sila sa(performance namin sa) NCC,kalimutan na nila yun. Wehave something new to offer, and we promise another

breathtaking performance.Bernabe also had a messageto their foes come Sunday.Pakakabahin.

UST Salinggawi: Playing by their strengthBy Ruth L. Navarra

They will play bytheir strengths. That is how the

UST Salinggawi DanceTroupe (SDT) plans toconquer this years UAAPCheerdance competition.

Salinggawi is a dancetroupe. It was established as a

folk dance group. Mas madalaspo naming tinitrain ang dance, says president Danrev Dimacu-langan. The pep squad equiva-lent of the university is the UST

Yellow Jackets. This year, thedance gets 50 percent of thescore. Alam naman po naminna weakness namin ang gym-nastics at stunts. So sa dance potalaga kami magfofocus.

Their strength has also be-come their weakness in cheer-leading competitions. Theypractice later compared to otherteams who practice gymnasticsand stunts the whole year. Theyhave a lot of things going onthat they almost always com-plete their routines later thanthe rest of competing teams.

    This year is no exemption.

kaya naman po. Kailangan langirest, he said.

The word resting in SDTlingo means to suck it up. If oneleg is in a supporter, it meansthe other should work doublyhard to compensate. It is a com-mon sight during practice to seea dancer wincing while doingsomething as simple as bendinga knee.

    Injuries have obviously

weakened them. However, itdoesnt appear to stop them. Di-maculangan says they arestronger this year. The fact thatthey have had enough time tofinally get to know coach Ra-mon Pagaduan IV is already aplus.

Mas okay yung relationshipnamin with our coach. Mas ki-lala na namin siya at mas kilalaniya kami. Alam na niya angstrengths and weaknessesnamin at yung kakayanin

namin, he says.He adds that the crowd can

expect them to play with thecolors of the university. That is

why it is essential that theirfans cooperate by wearing yel-low on Sunday.

They only finished their routinelast Sunday. It makes Dimacu-langan wish that they at leasthave another week to perfect it.

SDT are still on a hunt fortheir ninth championship title. They are currently tied with UPPep Squad with eight. However,SDTs performance the past two

years has not been strongenough to even merit them aplace in the top three.

Dimaculangan said that ex-pectations from them are high, but they dont feel pressuredabout it. After all, they donthave a title to defend, only aspot to win.

Focusing on dance does notmean they are not pushingthemselves higher. Seven daysbefore the competition and thesquad is laden with injuries. Most of their injuries comingfrom the double twist tossesthey are trying to achieve.

    BLUE BABBLE BATTALION:

    Nothing to lose

    By Alexx Esponga

THERE are only twothings that theAteneo de Manila

University Blue BabbleBattalion is hungry for: to

learn and perform.Even though the Katipunan-based squad arent expectingthat much for top spot in theUAAP Cheerdance Competitionthis coming September 15th,that doesnt take away theirpassion to cheer for their schooland give everything they have.

We have nothing to lose, said team captain Laurence

Arceo. We are a rookie team full of

members that are hungry tolearn, hungry to perform.

And this Sunday, aside fromtheir routines, Arceo sharedthat there they will be bringingtwo important things whichgives them the empowermentand courage to perform despiteof all their struggles,

Puso at tiwala lang angbaon namin.

True enough, the cheerlead-ers of Blue and White havetheir eyes fixed not on the goldbut giving the fans a big blastand put of a great show fortheir beloved alma mater.

    Rebuilding stageEvery squad goes through

that period of rebooting thewhole team because of manypossible reasons. For ADMU, itis because of the immaturity oftheir squad and the entry ofthree new coaches.

A lot of our old membersdecided to quit. The team nowis composed of only nine veter-

ans and a total of 16 new com-peting members, said Arceo.

We also recruited newcoaches just this April. Thats

why this year is really a rebuild-ing stage for us.

Since the team had gonethrough a lot of changes, skip-

    per Arceo started to becomerealistic.

Before the competition, wereally needed to go down interms of skill level to allow therookies to catch up, Arceosaid.

They also had a really toughtime adjusting to the routines, stunts and patterns of their

coaches this year becausetheyve been handled by CoachRandell San Gregorio for sever-al years already.

It was hard for us to copewith the new coaching style be-cause weve lost coach [SanGregorio] last October and the

three coaches [Marvin Wynant,Ryan Silva, Barbara Escueta]only came about five monthsago, said Arceo.

But the 21-year old Arceo isstill hopeful that they would beable to pull off a great showthis coming Sunday. One thingthat would not only help them

win but also guide the team in

the next tournaments is thechange of judging in the CDC.

50% will be coming from theUAAP judges [dance] and theother 50% from the NCC judges[cheer], he [Arceo] said. Itsmore transparent and at leastnow, well know what to improve

on in terms of our stunts.According to Arceo, the

skill level that they have isnothing compared to the otherteams. But what the skipper hasimposed and imprinted in the

young minds of his team is this:The prize is just secondary.

What is more important is beinga cheerleader for Ateneo.

    Animo Squad: Archers

    aiming for more

There is more. Last year, many didnt expect that theDe La Salle University Animo Squad would bring aspectacular show but despite all the efforts, they

have fallen straight at the bottom of the cellar next to Uni-versity of the East Pep Squad.

The boys and girls of renowned coach Rhu-fa Del Rosario are aware of the much biggercompetition that awaits them this year. That is

why they have filled their tanks full of gas andare ready to unleash more intensity to theirroutines in the upcoming UAAP CheerdanceCompetition.

I really cant reveal the theme. All I can say isbe ready, said newbie cheerleader Danielle Casipit.

Last year might be a nightmare for the Ani-mo Squad but no doubt that this comingSeptember 15th, they are determined to endtheir losing streak and make a blast at the Mall

of Asia Arena. The squad of Green and White has prepared

earlier than usual, concentrating on theirweaknesses and also maintain their strengthand cardio.

Before they learned all the stunts required, they first prioritized their individual physicalconditions.

Cardio would be a very big factor in thecompetition because dancing, cheering and do-ing stunts arent easy, said Casipit. Condition-ing [the body] is a must to complete the rou-tine and do more.

Time for the Animo Squad is considered asgold. Since the team is composed of fresh, youngand inexperienced cheerleaders, they had to

work double time to achieve what they want. However, the maturity of the squad is not a

problem. Skipper Jaymes Saez confirms thateven if they have a bunch of rookies going tothe battlefield, this will not hinder them fromshowing what theyve got.

Time to end the dry spellAnd the dry spell continues. After a decade, the Uni-versity of the East Pep Squad is still mourning be-

cause of their never-ending losing streak in the pastUAAP Cheerdance Competitions. It is true that theyhave tried to get rid of the awful curse that was setupon them after they won 1st runner-up in 2002 butthey just couldnt. However, the Recto-based squadhas never lost hope. Despite the cruelty of fate uponthem, they still are not just willing but intensely des-perate to end that nightmare and climb on top of thepyramid again. This season, the Warriors are on theguard. This might be the year that they have beenwaiting for in a long time. It was late summer of lastyear when the UE Pep Squad recruited award-winningCoach Jomel Bernando and invited him to mentor theteam. He [Bernando] admitted that it was really hardfor him and the team to adjust because of the shortperiod of the time they have to prepare. The squad it-self also is under construction the previous year be-cause a lot of senior cheerleaders bid goodbye andonly few managed to stay to spearhead the squad.Mas palaban sila ngayon at nakakatuwa yon, saidBernardo who also coaches the Central Colleges ofthe Philippines Bobcats in the National CheerleadingCompetition. Mas handa kami ngayon kaysa lastyear.
