the biggest part ofme. What hurt morewas when he toldpeople bad stuffabout me that werenot true. Everyonewas shocked when webroke up becausethey thought we weregoing to be togetherforever. We lookedlike we were a perfectcouple. I really lovehim, Joe, but I guessmy love just isn’tenough.

I started to moveon until I met Jarla, aguy whom I thoughtcould replace Mike inmy life. But just likeMike, he too left me.And so here I amagain. I just got out ofthe hospital afterhurting myself. Jarlamade me forget aboutMike but he hurt me,too. I still rememberMike and still havefeelings for him. Andnow I’m scared offalling in love. It’s sohard to face yourproblems when you’reall alone. My cousinwho looks after mehas cancer and I’mthe only girl in thefamily. My parents arein the States.

Joe, please tell mewhat to do. I askedGod for a sign, andhe gave it to me. Ithought Mike and Iwere destined to betogether. I really don’tunderstand, Joe. I cryevery night and myfriends tell me thatmy eyes mirror thesadness that I feel. Idon’t know how I can

Beverly

DEAR Beverly,I know how much

it hurts when the peo-ple we love decide toget us out of theirlives. It is so painfulsometimes that we justwant to die. But nomatter how batteredour feelings and digni-ty may be, that willnever justify any act ofself-inflicted pain orworse, suicide. Beverly, most people do not re-alize that for others tolove them, they mustlearn to love them-selves first. There aresome who realize thistoo late.

People do irrationalthings when someonethey sincerely love pur-posely hurt them. Thisdoesn’t change any-thing nor does it makea difference for thosewho don’t care aboutus. We just becomehelpless victims of ourown desperation andfall into a cycle of in-curable depression.Beverly, you have criedenough. Don’t wasteyour tears anymore. The people you areshedding them fordon’t deserve it. Bestrong and don’t allowfailure to take awayyour hope in findinghappiness in your life. There is a reason whyGod allows thesethings to happen. Theymay be painful, butthey are all meant tomake you a strongerand better person. There is life even afterseveral bad relation-ships. There is hopeeven if all your effortsin finding the rightperson have failed. Bestrong in your faithbecause good thingscome to those who be-lieve and strive to behappy in spite of thepain they keep in theirhearts.

the last day of Mike’sstay in the Philip-pines, he went toBatangas with hisfriends. I called tofind out if he was do-ing ok because hewas not answeringany of my calls. Thatsame night, hescreamed at me andtold me that I wasgetting into hisnerves.

I really didn’tknow what happenedJoe. After leaving forNew Jersey, we con-tinued to chat butstarted fighting moreoften. He told me thatsooner or later wewould have to splitup because he has to

stay in the US forgood. There was nopoint being togetherbecause we werephysically apart. Icouldn’t stop crying,Joe, because I reallyloved him with all myheart. I failed most ofmy subjects becauseof him. I started to dostupid things like tak-ing a lot of sleepingpills.

When he cameback for a visit, Iheard that he had anew girl which justkilled me. I kept ontaking pills until I hadan overdose. Joe,Mike was my first. And you know what Imean by that—he had

both Chinese. Even ifI was not Chinese, they treated me as if Iwas a real member ofthe family and toldMike to take care ofme. His mother evenbought me a gift fromNew Jersey even ifshe hasn’t actuallymet me yet.

After some time,Mike left for New Jer-sey to finish his stud-ies. I didn’t hesitate tolet him go because Iwanted him to pursuehis dreams even if itmeant that we weregoing to be apart. On

One day, while wewere chatting, Mikeasked me to be hisgirl. With no hesita-tion Joe, I said yes.

After that, I askedhim what the datewas and he told me itwas the 17th. I sud-denly rememberedthat when I was inhigh school, I told myteacher that whoeverproposes to me on the17th will be the loveof my life forever.

It was probablydestiny that Mike pro-posed to me on the17th. It just feltstrange that we weregoing to be togetherforever. Anyway, Mikeintroduced me to hisparents who were

She got mad at AlmaMoreno (then First Lady ofParañaque and in charge of theconcert) for not letting us in toaccompany our kids, so shepulled out Sancho from theshow. Since I’m an MJ fanatic, Icouldn’t care less even if MJwould kidnap IC.

To this day, Ai and I get agood laugh reminiscing aboutthat time, especially her shout-ing match with Alma. The BestActress also deserves a best
