A NEW MANAGER AT THE HELM FOR THE MARINERS

Camelon pay their first visit to the Canniepairt since 2004 when they returned to Falkirk with the points thanks to a 2-0 win over a home side on the week between the eras of Baikie and Burgess . The clubs have met twice already this season with honours even. Tayport picked up the points from a 2-1 win at Carmuirs in October but we crashed out of the Scottish Cup at the same venue in January, beaten 3-1, our biggest Scottish Cup defeat for ·1 O years .

It's been all change at both clubs since then . Following a home defeat by Whitburn, Tayport parted company with manager Keith Burgess and two weeks later Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean took over the reins at Cann iepairt .

By coincidence it was a defeat against Whitbum a couple of weeks ago which was also to seal the fate of Camelon manager Jim Harkins . It was a sacking which few seemed to see coming but the Mariners committee must have had more than an inkling because Alan McGonigal had quit the manager 's post at East South Championship leaders Sauchie and was in the Camelon hot seat before the week was out.

McGoniga l, of course , had an illustrious career with Camelon , playing for the side which lifted the Scottish Cup in 1995 and also that which was beaten by Tayport in the Scottish Final the following year . At that time the new Camelon boss was nicknamed Victor after the Meldrew character and Tayport fans will be hoping he has occasion to live to that name after today 's game .

Both sides had midweek fixtures , Camelon winning 4-0 at Livingston United in a local cup tie and Tayport scraping through on penalty kicks in a local cup tie at Arbroath . It was an opportunity to for both managers to check out the strength of their respective pools and both teams will show changes in their starting line-ups this afternoon .

After a tremendous 2005/06 season during which they lifted the Fife & Lothians Cup, reached the final of the Dern Master Demolition Cup and lift the Lothians title to reach the Super League , Camelon haven't found things as easy this year. However, as with every side in this league , two or three wins on the bounce can propel a side several places up the table . That will be the aim for both sides today so let's hope we see an enjoyable 90 minutes .

Whitburn picked up three vital points in midweek with a single goal win at home to Bathgate and in so doing kept their title hopes alive. They are the form team and Linlithgow will be getting just a tad twitchy . lfBonnyrigg can manage a win at Carnoustie today, then further pressure will be on the league leaders. Linlithgow, however, can only throw it away, but wasn't that what we were sayinmg about Bathgate this time last season.

At the other end of the table Kinnoull are pretty much destined to a drop back into the Premier Division but which club will join them is not yet clear. The bookies will have &o'ness as odds on favourites to accompany the Perth club downstairs . Oakley's recent form, however, has been miserable and should they lose the Fife derby to Hill of Beath this afternoon , th~n Bo'ness will sense that all is not yet lost.

Hill of Beath are unbeaten in eight Super League fixtures in 2007 whilst Oakley haven 't won this year and are looking for a first win in seven Super League games.

TAYPORT MAN BUILDS A PYRAMID

Well, maybe not quite, but club sponsor and weel kent face in Tayport, ANDY ROBERTSON, is PRINCIPAL CLERK of WORKS for WAFI Construction who are building RAFFLES DUBAI, a hotel "characterised by its distinctive opulence and effortless lux-ury ........ iving up to Dubai's high standards of lavish magnificence".

Andy, sponsor of Grant Paterson, and better known in Tayport by his moniker Bunt, tells us the hotel is the new 248 bedroom/state room 6 Star RAFFLES DUBAI, built to the shape of a Pyramid and due to open later this summer. The hotel will be operated by Raffles Management from Singapore but owned by Andy's boss MKM.

The hotel has an underground Souk (Arabian Market Place) which is a replica of the old Khan Mirjan Souk from Baghdad. This has actually been constructed in Cairo and the 'old' streets and alley ways/ shop fronts will be shipped out in sections. Andy has been commuting from Dubai to Cairo frequently to measure and check out the Khan Mirjan construction to ensure everything will be accomodated when the shipments arrive and installations commence within the Raffles Dubai. The 3rd floor external of the Hotel has a 3 acre Singapore garden with plants and

trees imported from Singapore. 40% of the project is below the ground and includes an extension to a shopping Mall which would equate to the size the Overgate Mall in Dundee (built, incidentally, by another ex Tayport player and committee member. The top floor of the Pyramid is all glass with the very top apex section constructed with double glazed units with gold flakes between the two panes. Guided tour by arrangement.

The Manager's Page

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to both sets of supporters to the Canniepairt for today's East Super League match against Camelon.

Today's opponents arrive with a new manager. We would like to wish Alan McGonigal all the best in his new appointment.

We know that the game this afternoon will be a very tough encounter having previously been beaten 3-1 at Camelon in the Scottish Cup. The Camelon players will also be trying that little bit harder to impress their new manager, thus adding an extra edge to the game.

Since last week's report we defeated Fauldhouse Utd in the East of Scotland Cup. Although not a classic by any means we were never at any point in any danger. We controlled the game from start to finish on a very bumpy pitch which contributed hugely to how well we passed the ball and performed.

The players themselves knew they underachieved but it is very hard to sustain the standards they set the previous two weeks with the warmer weather and pitch conditions being a factor.

One pleasing point from last week's game was the performance of Webby when he was introduced into the fray. His pace and workrate certainly injected a spark into the proceedings and in turn rubbed off onto the rest of the team where they produced a better second half performance.

At the time of writing we have a midweek game versus Arbroath SC in the Challenge Cup. On a positive note Murray Urquhart has resumed training and should

,

be involved at some point in the above fixture. Badger will also be available again as he was sorely missed in the Fauldhouse game due to work commitments. Ian and myself will be using all the playing staff during this period as we both feel that every-one will contribute in this hectic schedule through to the end of the season.

We have six league games left and it is very important to carry on the good work from our previous league victorie~. We will be aiming to win all our remaining games and with your support I see no reason why this cannot be achieved.

I hope you are all in good voice as your support is vital to our success.

Enjoy the match

Cheers,

:frani &Jan

FROM THE ARCHIVES The Snout on 12 April 1997

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH THE SNOUT

TULL I.ALLAN Thistle 's 1-0 win over St Andrews United last s aturday was their first win ,over Saints for 30 years . Not a day United will want to remember . ·

TAYPORT's defeat in the Whyte & Mackay Cup last Saturday brough~·to an end an amazing record . It was the first time Tayport had ever i ·ost a Whyte & Mackay tie . Tayport won it for the first four years and in the last two, the games finished 0-0 . On these last two occasions . Tayport lost in a penalty shoot-o ut .

****** STEVIE Stewart will be missing next Saturday against Bank.foot Athletic. He' 11 be in Ireland playing for Scotland. The Scots meet the Isle of Han in the semi-final of the tournament with the winners meet i ng the winners of the Northern Ireland v Eire match .

****** WE think we've got a bit of catching up to do in respect of league garnes. Spare a thought for Beith. ,The Ayrshire Division one side moved into April having played only four league games in eight months. And they boasted an unbeaten record untii last week when they went down 0-1 to Maybole. Compare that with Dund ·e·e ·Pfc>"rth End -who ha ve only two games to go to complete their league season.

CONTROVERSY raged at Cambuslang a week past Saturday following an incident in the Cambuslang v Cwnnock West of Scotland cup-tie. The ball went out of play and was collected by Rangers manager Peter Miller. Cumnock striker Jamie Murphy tried to get the ball from Miller but .Miller wouldn't hand it over . The incident ended with Murphy collecting a red card and no action being taken against the Cambuslang boss - much to the annoyance of Cumnock . 'fhe game finished level at 1-1 so it should be an inte1;:esting replay at Cumnock .

****** AMONGST those attending the Tayport FC 50th Anniversary Dinner on 26th April will be former players flying in from different parts of the world . Amongst the acceptances are Richard Redpath (coming from Baltimore , USA). Walter Dick.son {Portugal), Stuart Davie and Andy Robertson (Dubai). Hopefully their stay will stretch to the following Wednesday so they can take in the Semi-Final. ...... THE club has a history of having rather portly secretaries. That trend was probably started by the late Angus Barbieri . Angus certainly gave the club - and the town- a unique distinction - the only football club whose secretary's been worthy of an entry in the GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS.

His weight declined from 33 sto ne 10 lb. to 12 sto ne 10 lb. Dr . The Fauldhouse web site reported last week's match as follows Tayport through to 3rd round Tayport secured their place in the 3rd round of the cup with a convincing 2-0 win over Fauldhouse. Robbie Henderson scored in 5 minutes with a near post flick and then Bryan Duell wrapped up the win with a superb strike in the 2nd half. Fauldhouse's best chances came from team captain Andy Cooper but he could not hit the target with 2 powerful headers

The Scottish Sun did a full page spread on Grant Paterson (April 7) in recognition of him passing the 800 appearance mark. Playing down his record breaking career to date Grant, who is now involved in a coaching role under new gaffers Conway and Gilzean, said" I love this club, it's given me some fantastic memories and I want to put something back so they can keep on being successful" On his 800th game, v Linlithgow, Grant commented " The club game me a memento and my old boss Dave Baikie was there that day, those were nice touches"

The Fife Herald noted that there was likely to be a clutch of foreign visitors for the game v Fauldhouse. The town's Belgian connection, forged in the early 1970s, was still going strong and 25 tourists, in Scotland for the weekend , were expected to attend . Which they did in preference to visiting Dens Park. The Herald reported the win at Bathgate with a headline · 'Three Bath players take early plunge' , a reference to the fact that Thistle finished the game with only eight players. The Herald also mentioned that Bathgate must hate the site of Tayport arriving at Creamery Park as the 1-0 win was their fifth win in five Super League visits.

With the sacking of their manager, the appointment of a replacement and an East of Scotland Cup tie v Linlithgow, Camelon had a good share of the postings on the Yahoo Scottish Juniors Group.

Monday's Courier had a comprehensive run down on the weekend's East of Scotland Cup ties, with the paper reporting that Frank Conway admitted his side hadn't played all that well v Fauldhouse but were always in control;.

The Evening Telegraph thought the key to Tayport's win was the timing of the goals , the first in 6minutes and the second in 67 minutes effectively killing offFauldhouse ' s chances of a comeback .

SNIFFING ABOUT ·wITH

THE SNOUT It may have been his 802nd competitive game for the club but Grant Paterson is still producing the goods as last week's choice of Tayport's Man of the Match by hospitality guests at the Fauldhouse United game bears testimony.

Congratulations to Cupar Hearts whose 3-0 win over Ohan Saints at Duffus Park last week put the howe of Fife club in to the semi final of the Scottish Amateur Cup for the first time in 57 years.

We're still trying to work out the rationale for the kick-off times the ERJFA match secretary has set for next midweek. On Wednesday Downfield v Violet in the league has been given a 6.40pm kick-off, yet Montrose v Arbroath SC in a cup tie is scheduled for 6.45.

We think it's fair to say that the ground at Seaton Park was as hard as a brick on Wednesday past (as i~ will be here today) yet there was no question of considering the game might be postponed because the ground was 'too bard'. Yet that's exactly the reason given for the postponement of the Tayport v Penicuik cup tie in February.

When folk read in the newspaper that Tayport edged out Arbroath 6-5 on penalties on Wednesday evening, they could have been excused for thinking that there had been 10 perfectly executed kicks before Arbroath slipped up. But that was far from the case. After seven kicks each the score was 3-3. Fortunately Fitzy's goalkeeping was better that his teammates' accuracy from 12 yards and Tayport's last three kicks were converted to Arbroath's two, to allow us to edge home. When it came to each side's tenth kick. Arbroath had no choice as to who might take it - it had to be their keeper as a player had been sent off following Tayport's 90th minute equaliser. Fitzy saved keeper Cormack's kick. exchanged places with the ASC No.I and promptly smashed the ball home. By this time it wasn't even a gathering gloom. The gloom had gathered and fans had difficulty seeing what was going on.

The East Region JFA is becoming like the secret service. Next Wednesday's Challenge Cup tie at home v Forfar West End was announced in fixtures which arrived less than a week before the game. Better see what the rest of the draw is, so a quick glance at the East Region website should tell us, but no Currie or Challenge Cup draws to be seen. Did note however that DJLaing is sponsoring the South i.e. Lothians League Cup. Wonder if DJ Laing knows that? Surely things can only get better.

No word yet on the date for the League Cup Final v Locbee United. It's possible it could be at Laing Park, Carnoustie on either Tuesday 26 April or Tuesday 1 May. At the time of writing that's far from certain.

The snail racing event held last Saturday raised about £600 for club funds. Attendance was a tad disappointing but was well supported by the players. Thanks, guys and thanks to the others who had an enjoyable evening.

"Discipline the key in recent league successes"

says

It's now just over a month since Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean were unveiled as the new management team at the Canniepairt and early evidence suggests that the duo have settled in well.

Highlight was the convincing 3-0 win against title favourites , Linlithgow, three weeks ago. Robbie Henderson tormented the visiting defence that afternoon, opening the scoring early in the contest, then setting up Ronnie Kenneth for number two, towards half-time.

That counter saw Linlithgow's Greg Denham ordered off for his vociferous protests, so it was no surprise to see 'Port add a third goal during the second half, with Henderson again on target. A highly encouraging display from Frank Conway's side.

Another three points and another clean sheet followed at Creamery Park, as, for the first time this season, Tayport won consecutive Super League games. Discipline was probably the key. Bathgate, in their bid for success, have again revamped their squad, but, the more things change, the more they stay the same; Thistle could not keep a full compliment of players on the park. As a result, Tayport's patience paid off when, late in the day, Derek Wemyss notched the only goal of the match.

Frazer Fitzpatrick recorded a third successive shut-out last week , when Fauldhouse visited the Canniepairt for an East of Scotland Cup tie. Tayport must be warming to the tournament , scoring a goal in each half to make safe progress. Robbie Henderson and Bryan Duell were the marks-man, with Duell's strike particularly impressive. '

Most recently, Wednesday evening to be precise, 'Port were in Challenge Cup action at Seaton Park, Arbroath and what an intriguing evening it turned out to be. Two down with quarter of an hour to play, 'Port forced a draw, courtesy of a Chris Webster penalty and a late, late equaliser from Ronnie Kenneth .

Let the record show that, of Tayport's first nine attempt in the ensuing shoot-out , Roberto Morris, Chris Webster , Murray Urquhart, Robbie Henderson and Derek Wemyss were successful. Murray McDowell , Ronnie Kenneth, Barry McNaughton and Ross Gunnion were not, as fortunes fluctuated dramatically . Obviously, ASC were just as erratic, so the score stood at 5-5. As darkness quickly descended on Seaton Park, Frazer Fitzpatrick, who'd already saved three kicks, then denied opposite number Alan Cormack, before taking centre stage to shoot Tayport into the next round.
