TODAY'! e&MI East of Scotland Cup 1st Round

TAYPORT v LIVING STON UNITED

It' s been a long wait. . .. Five months to be precise, but after four postponements and a change of venue, this 1 st round East of Scotland Cup tie finally gets underway. Two bereavements and two frozen pitches caused the postponements and a still unplayable pitch at Livingston necessitated the move today from Station Park to the Canniepairt .

Tayport may think they 've had a bad winter in terms of postponements but our visitors today haven't seen competitive action since 12th of December. Few clubs can have suffered as much from winter weather. It's far longer than any summer close season.

Tayport, therefore, should have the decided advantage in terms of match fitness but under the new management of Nicky Brookfield, the Livi lads will be determined to show what they can do and are sure to be quickly out of the blocks .

It's been something of a mixed season to date for the South Division club who can only climb the league table following a run of six league games without a win. Despite this poor run of form, Livi have still managed to score in every game they've played since early September and indeed have only failed to find the opposition net this season on two occasions. With a healthy number of the Lothians' Constabulary in their ranks, fielding a settled team can sometimes be an issue for the Station Park club, but no such problems today with all reporting for football duty.

Tayport's selection will be restricted through injuries to Derek Wemyss, Graham Nicoll , Stuart Ferguson and Martin O'Doherty. Scott Hunter (illness) and Neal Ferrie (cuptied) will also miss out. On the plus side Mick O'Donnell is available again. The Irishman trained twice this week and will be in contention for a starting jersey, given that the manager only has thirteen fit players at his disposal.

Livingston contested the 1994 East of Scotland Cup final, losing 2-1 to Came Ion, but haven 't really made their mark since and Tayport's record since they first entered the competition in 2004/05, is far from impressive , so both clubs have an incentive to improve on these records.

The tie will be settled on penalties if level after 90 minutes . Winners are at home to Dundee Violet in the 2nd round .

"Despite postponement s, Februar y was a good month for Tayport"

Despite the postponements and the re-arranging of fixtures, this last month has been a good one for ' Port . Progress to the quarter finals of the Scottish Junior Cup acts as a tremendous boost to the club , al though promotion back to the top flight still remains the priority .

To that end, Tayport collected three valuable points last weekend , when Fauldhouse came to town on East Premier League duty. In what was proving to be a fairly even contest , the Canniepairt outfit made the breakthrough , in the middle of the second half . Great credit should go to David Black, who chased a seemingly lost cause to the by-line and fired over a cross to the near post , where Lee Bryce pounced to turn home his first goal in Tayport colours.

' Hoose then missed an absolute sitter and would rue that spurned opportunity to equalise . Moments later, Bryce raced clear and, · despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the shot , the ball ended up in the net and the points began to look secure. Substitute Darren Scott made them safe in the closing stages , with a composed finish and , a l l of a sudden , Tayport had recorded a comprehens i ve win .

The clean-sheet was an added bonus , especially after the re - shuff l e to the back - four , after on l y 25 minutes , when Derek Wemyss and Stuart Ferguson succumbed to injury.

So , still batt l ing on all fronts, there is much to look forward to as we reach a critical stage in the season. We might even manage to play Livingston, in the East of Scotland Cup:

At long last we have an opportunity to play our much delayed East of Scotland cup tie against Livingston. With the match being switched to the Canniepairt, it gives both teams a much needed game in what has been an unprecedented spell of bad weather.

Last week saw us back in league action, the first time since 5 December , but with 3 rounds of the Scottish having been played prior to the Fauldhouse game, we were starting to slip a lot of games behind our other contenders in the race for promotion. A good result was imperative, and fortunately we did that with a fine 3-0 win. With today's cup tie and the quarter final of the Scottish probably next week, we again will be well behind in league fixtures . It is crucial, therefore, that I ensure all the squad are getting game time and this will reflect on the team selection today . I have a really good squad of players at my disposal , knowing that whomever I select will be putting in a performance that will give me a selection headache the following week.

Again I must stress that the league is the single most important competition for us this season . The Fauldhouse win was pleasing in many ways for me. I felt over the 90 mins we defended really well, especially when I had to take off Derek and Fergie after only 25 mins , due to injuries. They were replaced by Joe and Barry, and this further highlighted the flexibility and ability of the squad, with both of them turning in really good performances. I was then required to make a third enforced substitution when Grant went down with cramp in both legs (I think the players ' committee has issued him with a fine for this) . Darren, who has been coming back from injury, was introduced and capped a good 30 mins with a well taken, some would say typical Darren Scott goal. Don't get me wrong in that, although the league is the main priority , I want to win every game, and this cup is the biggest one in our region . It would be great to progress to the next stage which is why we will be giving our opponents today every respect, as we do with every team who visit the Canniepairt . Livingston have not played many competitive games since early December , but knowing their assistant manager Nicky Brookfield well from our days at Edinburgh United, he will have them fit and prepared.

On the training front we have been fortunate this week in being able to get onto the training pitch both nights. We managed to get in some real good hard preparation work just before the frost started to set in. Although down in numbers slightly with a couple of injuries and Scott Hunter ill, the players once again worked their socks off, and with Mick O Donnell making a welcome return after work commitments had kept him away for a couple of month s, we are fit, ready and prepared for this game today ·.

When you meet people from different countries it is remarkable how often these people seem to conform to their national stereotypes. There are always exceptions of course, but many Belgians can be quite boring and unremarkable , Americans can seem oblivious to the rest of the world and, while we might not like to admit it, there are a lot of tight Scots out there .

It should come as no surprise therefore that national football teams also seem to embody national characteristics. The German team is ruthlessly efficient, the Dutch have more than a streak of arrogance, the Koreans are incredibly industrious and the Western African teams are all plagued by the chaos which seems so rife in their respective countries.

Given these similarities it is easy to understand why people come to see their football teams as a sporting representation of the country itself. Hence why the standards demanded of those footballers who represent our nations are so much higher than those demanded of our club sides. This all helps to explain why John Terry's appearance at Wembley on Wednesday was met with a few boos from the home support.

Of course there is no justification for such behaviour. Terry was chosen for his undeniable footballing qualities and if he can help England to win the World Cup then he will have served his purpose. But then perhaps the boos were not directed at Terry, but instead were a more general reaction to what their country as a whole has become.

Saturday 6th March 2010 It's unusual enough to get an e-mail from a Dundee United fan asking for Tayport memorabilia, but even more so when the Tangerine follower comes from Poland! That was indeed the scenario when Grazyna Tudela got in touch last week, and pleaded with to my generous nature . "I'm from Poland and I have a fascination with Scottish football" said Grazyna "I would like to receive sun new information about your team. I collect badges from the Scottish national team, referees, and football clubs. I will be grateful if you send me some things connected with you're a badge" [sic} After a little more digging, I found that the Pole is no amateur to this field, boasting 570 pin badges from British football clubs, despite having only been collecting for three years! "My favorite Scottish club is Dundee United, and my Polish club is LKS LODZ .Lks played a UEFA Champions League in 98/99 at Old Trafford! At least one of your teams experiences European football sometimes I suppose! " Anyway , in true Jim'll Fix It fashion, Grazyna, a few bits and bobs are on their way!

Tayport Travel Club member Billy Gibb was again out of luck this week. I received a text whilst at training [in case anyone imagines Bombver was actually training , I can assure you he means watching training - Ed] on Monday night from the 'gypsy ' of Junior Footba ll asking me for a contact number for Livingston United, presumably so he could arrange directions to the nearest social club where he would no doubt allow people to buy him a few drinks before the match. Being as organized as ever , Billy had just booked his Megabus seat through to the Lothians for him and his usually companions . Just a shame the match had been switched during a conversation between Abby and his counterpart some 30 minutes earlier!

Thanks to all who attended the Race Night in the Tayport Arms last Saturday. Gail and her staff, as ever , showed tremendous hospitality , and a fine time was had by all.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH THE SNOUT

Goodness knows why we've had to wait so long for the draw for the Emirates Scottish Cup 6th round. Three of the ties are set for next Saturday and with the draw only taking place last night, it's giving clubs little time to organise buses, hospitality and the like. Why make the draw on Real Radio, a station which is aimed at a central Scotland audience? No doubt there is a good reason but nobody tells us. There is no great awareness of Real Radio here and reception in Tayport and in Dundee is patchy to say the very least. Indeed, when one local punter heard the draw was to be on Real Radio, he though that meant a radio with a cable and a plug. It is hard to argue with those who bang on about a west coast bias in the Scottish game. ·

It is with regret that we mourn the passing earlier this week of Jim Robertson who had been a staunch follower of the club since we joined the Juniors. Jim was a good friend of Grant Paterson's late mother Gina and that's where he made his connection with the club. Originally from Fife, Jim lived in Dllildee until moving to Tayport some years ago. A Platinum Club member, Jim rarely missed a match, home or away, and until recently , was a regular on preseason trips. Our condo lences go to Grant, Gill and fami ly. Photo shows 'Auld' Jim with the Scottish Junior Cup

The Scottish Juniors ' International select team's friendly earlier this week against Rutherglen Glencairn was abandoned at half-time following a bad injury sustained by Glencaim full back Craig Palmer . The sides were level at 1-1 when the game was called off thus preventing any of the Scottish subs getting a run. For the record the East Region players in the starting XJ were Ross (Lochee), Fleming (Bo'ness), Gielty (Newtongrange) , Lister (Bathga te Thistle) and McLaren (Bathgate Thistle) . Subs with East Region teams were Courts (Kelty), Strckland (Whitburn) and J.C.Hutchison (Camelon)

There was a rumour doing the rounds this week that three East Region Junior clubs would be app lying to join the East if Scotland Senior League for next season. Speculation was that Dunbar United, Edinburgh United and Haddington Athletic were the clubs. Dunbar and Haddington were very quick to scotch the rumours that they were interested in a change.

Next Saturday Locbee United will get their biggest crowd since their game v Ayr United, but it will be nowhere near the 2,770 who assembled at North End Park to see Tayport eliminate Downfield by 1-0 in the last ever tie to go to three games. But will there be a pro-gramme .... .. ?
