GROUP
FAULDDOUSE UNITED We welcome Fauldhouse United to the Canniepairt for a third occa
sion, their most recent being a Premier Division fixture in February
2010 when goals from Lee Bryce (2) and Darren Scott gave 'Port a
3-0 win. Barry Donachie is the sole survivor from the Tayport line
up that day. Barry came on as substitute but an injury sustained at
Bonnyrigg means he is unlikely to feature today.
Apart from the two league fixtures in 2009/10 this will be the third
meeting of the sides in the East of Scotland Cup, the most recent
being in March 2012 at Parkview, Fauldhouse when the locals
dumped Tayport out of the competition by 2-0. Only Kenny
McCulley survives from that Tayport team. Six of the Fauldhouse
line-up that day are still at Parkview, Jamie Gallagher, Sam Scott,
Jason Deans, Mark Wilkins, Kenny Martin and Gary Shanks. It is
this consistency of selection which has gone a long way to provide
the challenge for a Super League place which, barring a catastro
phic collapse, looks to be in the bag.
As the results alongside show, it wasn't the best of starts to the sea
son for Fauldhouse with only nine points from the opening half
dozen games but thereafter a run of seven wins on the bounce took
them to the top of the table.
Last week at Glenesk., Fauldhouse were held to a 3-3 draw by Vio
let but by all accounts were unlucky not to have taken all three
points. Faudhouse, despite being short of full strength, lost out to a
superb free kick in the last minute from Violet's former Tayport
youngster Keir Reilly.
Making their Canniepairt debuts are young defenders Matty Allan
and Scott Mollison. Both are full timers at Dens Park and have
been signed on loan from Dundee FC until the end of the season. Matty made his debut last week at Bonnyrigg and Scott, signed yes
terday, will be in squad for this afternoon. Ross Grant will still miss
out through injury and it's likely Barry Donachie will also be an
injury absentee.
If the tie is all square after 90 minutes, penalties will decide who
goes into the last eight.

SQUEAKY BUM TIME LOOMING LARGE
The impact of the re-structure of the East Region League ' s four divisions will become apparent as the season moves into its last two months.
Just to re-cap , the situation is as follows
The bottom two teams in the Super League will be relegated
Their places will be taken by the top two teams in the Premier League
The team finishing third bottom of the Super League will meet the team finishing third top in the Premier League in a two legged end of season play-off
The bottom four clubs in the Premier League will be relegated
Their place s will be taken by the teams finishing in the top two places in the North Division and the South Division.
With at least a quarter of the season yet to be played in the case of most teams , there ' s a long way to
go and no doubt many twists and turns along the way.
In the extremely unlikely and hypothetical situation of there being no change to teams ' current positions over the next couple of months the situation as described above would be as follows.
Champions
Automatically Relegated to Premier Division
Automatically Promoted to Super League
Playing off to determine next season's status
Relegated from Premier Division
Promoted from North Division to Premier Division
Promoted from South Division to Premier Division

On March 2004 Taypo rt were bow lin g along in fi ne style on a 17 game unbeaten run w hich had
stretched back to the beginnin g of November. There were still 19 games to pl ay before the season
would end. D avie Baiki e was in his second spell as manager and would come so, so, very close to
repeating the Scotti sh Cup and Super League success of the previous season. T he Scotti sh Cup was
surrendered to Camoustie Panmure after a 0-0 draw and the Super League t itl e was lost to L inl ith
gow Rose on the sl immest of marg ins. Both clubs finished on the same poin ts. Linli thgow's goal
diffe rence was 19, Taypo rt 's was 18.
On Saturday 27 Marc h Tayport played a Scott ish Cup quarter final t ie at Cambuslang Rangers be
fore a health y attendance of 15 13. A late goal from Barry McNa ughton took Tayport thro ugh to the
last four . The l ine-up was Frazer Fitzpatri ck, Scott Peters, Grant Paterson, John Ward, Derek We
myss, Roberto Morri s, Steven Stewart, Barry M cN aughton, Bri an Craik, A ll an Ramsay and Sean
Chri stie. Ralph Hunt er, Kevin Heenan and John Elli ott came on as substitutes.

THE BAIKER'S BIT
Good afternoon to the Port Support and a warm welcome to the players and officials
of our visitors Fauldhouse United for this 3rd Round East of Scotland Cup tie.
Last week saw us lose once again by the odd goal, this time at Bonnyrigg. I don't have
many complaints with the 3-2 reversal. Overall we just came up short , but it wasn't
looking like that in the first 35140mins , a period where we were dominant. We
pressed them all over the pitch, in possession we were creating and causing them a lot
of problems and had we taken one of our chances to go 2-0 up, there may well have
been a different outcome .
Another pleasing aspect for me was that there were no individual errors . If I was to be
critical , it's possible both of their 2nd half goals could have been prevented had we
pressed the ball sharper . We've scored 5 goals in our last 2 games with nothing to
show for it and although this is frustrat ing, it is also encouraging.
This afternoon we face a side who are favourites to win the Premier League title and
are playing with a lot of confidence and scoring a lot of goals . We must therefore be
consciou s of that going in to this game .
The prize today is a quarter-final place in a cup second only to the Scottish Junior
Cup. I want to be in that draw and believe we can be, if produce the standard and the
commitment of which we are capable.

Disappointment for Mark
Local lad Mark Whatley (pictured), who had 75 appearances for Tayport from November 2009 to May 2012 , and is now playing for Spartans in Edinburgh , had a day of mixed fortunes last Sunday in the Lowland League 's Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup Final against Whitehill Welfare at Craigroyston 's St Mark's Park in Warriston Edinburgh . It was by all accounts a cracking match .
Whitehill went ahead but Mark equalised before half time . Spartans suffered a blow in the second period when ace marksman Keith McLeod received a straight red. The sides were still level after the regulation 90 and when Sean Muhsin put Spartans ahead in 112 minutes, the ten men looked to have the game in the bag. Unfortunately the referee saw fit to issue a red card for a second yellow to Spartan 's Alan Brown for his celebration of the goal. Down to nine men for the final eight minutes , Spartans were on the back foot and lost the equaliser in the final minute to tie the game up at 2-2. Whitehill took full advantage of their last gasp leveller and lifted the cup
'---=---- ----- --'by virtue of a 5-4 margin in the penalty shoot out.
Spartans ' boss Dougie Samuel posted a somewhat emotive postscript to the match on Monday . Samuel wrote •
A disappointing performance at Rosewell 2 weeks ago (a 3-1 league defeat by Whitehill] had left a cloud of self-doubt hanging over us. To lose any game is disappointing , to do so and be charged with a 'lack of stomach' for a battle is all the more difficult to take . Yesterday our Team showed it has heart , character , desire and talent...against the biggest, most physical VVWFC side Micky (Lawson, Whitehill manager] could pick on the day. Despite losing on penalties , our heart-beat is strong ... we remain focused on our key goals for the season , but also the long term . Make no mistake about it, we wanted to win yesterday .. . as was reflected in our performance and superb work ethic on the day. However, as strange as it may sound & seem to some , I firmly believe we gained more (in terms of the long term game) than we lost yesterday . Post match (straight after extra time) Micky was kind enough to acknowledge we had been the better team on the day (as did Mr Whitehill himself , Peter McGauley) . As a Coach and Manager you encourage and invite your players to 'control the controllables' . After going down to 1 O men, I believe we demonstrated our mental strength, we remained committed to playing our own brand and style of football on a big stage ... something which bodes well for the future . Our collective fitness levels shone through ... were there for all to see , as our players worked tirelessly to show for the ball , retain possession and aim to dictate the tempo of the game. After a pretty scrappy opening 30 mins, when there was only a handful of goal attempts in the game , we finished the 1 st half well on top, on the front foot. For me, the 2nd half started as the 1 st half had ended ... before we lost our talisman Cloudy (Keith McLeod] , to our 1st red card . Was it a penalty beforehand .. . when Cloudy was fouled , who knows ... on another day , it could have been given. However, most people would agree the defining moment turned out to be our 2nd red card for Hovie [Alan Brown], who had produced an 'morn' level of performance on the day . Based on what people I trust have told me post match and today , it was a harsh decision . Missing our top 3 pen takers in the shoot out made it all the more difficult , however, fair play to the Whitehill Welfare players who scored , the quality of their pens was very good . I've said it before , 'The Welfare ' are an experienced, strong; physical and capable side . We may have left w~hout the cup, however , we left the arena knowing we had competed and left nothing in our tank . We go into the final furlong of the season damaged by the suspensions we will now face (added to the absence of several players due to injury). However , we also go into the final furlong with a huge desire that's even greater on the back of yesterday and without a monkey or two on our back. This team's best days lie ahead , the core of this new side is still to reach its peak . Yesterday was another log on the fire, another experience banked on a more significant journey . Roll on Castle Douglas [next match v Threave Rovers], when we will go all out to increase our lead at the top of the Lowland League table . Sammy

. The last couple of matches have been high- scoring affair s, but five goals for and seven
against meant that Tayport didn't pick up any reward in terms of Super League point s.
A fortnight ago, Broxbum Athletic came to town and left with a 4-3 victory . 'Port competed
well throughout, but the conce ssion of two penalties did not help the cause. Grant Lawson
pounced to open the scoring on 18 minutes , but a 40th minute spot kick , awarded for hand
ball , drew Broxbum level.
Frustratingly , another penalty was awarded early in the second halfand the visitors found
themselves 2-1 up. Impres sively, Tayport roared back into the lead. The goalkeeper' s foul
on Connaire Connelly saw the referee point to the spot for the third time and Steven
McPhee levelled the score.
A comer led to Tayport' s third , with Paul Thom son on hand to convert at the far post, with
twenty minutes to play . Unfortunately , two goals in quick succession put paid to the home
side's hopes . Fraser Yeast and Scott Pittman were the 'Bum marksmen , in the 78th and 79th
minute .
Tayport also led at title-chasing Bonnyrigg last weekend . Matty Adam latched onto a Kri s
Rollo pass to take the ball past the 'keeper and roll home the opener , as early as the third
minute .
Try's they might , 'Port could not quite add what would have been a crucial second goal.
Severa l comers were forced and Ryan Suttie had a header cleared off the line, but 'Rigg
equalised towards half-time, through Roseburgh.
The New Dundas Park men were more of a threat after the break and Sam Morris made a
couple of saves before McLeish headed the host s into the lead, on 73 minutes . Sean Grady
grabbed another to put the game beyond Tayport , although Steven McPhee notched the last
counter of the afternoon , in injury-time , with a little help from the returning Simon Murr ay.

SNIFFING AROUND WITH THE SNOUT
No great surpr ise with the announcement that John McGlashan , who stepped down from
the Tayport job in September this season to look after Dundee FC's Under 17s, was last
week appointed to the manager's post at Dundee Violet. John had a short spell as Violet
boss in 2005 before taking up his four year tenure at Arbroath FC.
Perth based former Tayport striker Robbie Henders on did not have long to wait after being
released by Luncarty . He was quickly signed up by promotion chasing Jeanfield and al-
though he notched on his debut , it was to no avail, Swifts going down 2-1 to Dalkeith This-
tie at the Riverside Stadium .
Linlithgow Rose earlier this week announced that 'club legend ' Danny Smith, the Camelon manager , has been appointed to the Prestonfield hot seat. Smith was well tipped to be Mark Bradley 's successor but the timing has been unfortunate with Camelon playing a Scottish Junior Cup quarter final today.
There 's a tenuous connect ion between Tayport and Fauldhouse United . Jimmy Toner , a former Fauldhouse legend , now 90 years of age, won two Scottish League Cup medals as the No.7 in the Dundee side which beat Rangers in 1952 and Kilmarnock in 1953. Jimmy's son Barry played for Tayport , then an amateur side, in 1981 , the season that the club won its only Midlands Amateur Championship . A teammate of Barry's in that title winning side was Tayport FC's record amateur goalscorer Ian Howe , a present Canniepairt regular . Both Barry and Ian also played in the Tayport side which won an international tournament in Bel-gium that season .
Also a current Canniepairt regular is Ian's father , Jock Howe , who played for Tayport Violet in 1945/46 . It transpires that Jock and Jimmy Toner are still active sportsmen as members of the same bowling team at Dundee Indoor Bowling Club .
And there 's a further Tayport FC connection whereby Tayport FC's current No 6 John Ton-ner (yes , the different spellings are a bit confusing) , is the grandson of Ian Howe's Uncle Bill who plays in that same bowling team with Jock and Jimmy .
Gus Malone , the former Tayport player at both amateur and junior level , has achieved a degree of respectability it would appear . Appointed as St Andrews United manager follow-ing the recent illness suffered by previous incumbent Jim Hardie , Gus is addressed in the Saints' match programme as Mr Gordon Malone! It's his Sunday name but a lot of people don't know that!
Tayport will be without Simon Murray , Jake Mair and Nik Mann today . Simon Murray de-dined to play v Fauldhouse today as he would have required to sign up until the end of the season , The other two have decided their future lies elsewhere and have until Monday to find a new club. On the positive side Matty Allan and Scott Mollison have arrived at the Canniepairt on loan from Dundee FC until the end of the season . Both have been key members of the Dark Blues ' Under 20s this season .
