2nd round TAYPORT v PENICUIK AIBLETIC

Debut match for Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean

Penicuik Athletic were our 2007 first foots exactly four weeks ago but their visit was fleeting, with the referee calling the game off five minutes before kick-off. So we again welcome our friends from Midlothian to the Canniepairt for their first game here. Although, it's the visitors ' first visit to Fife's most northerly outpost, several of the Penicuik squad have played here with previous clubs. The road north has been a familiar one for Penicuik in recent weeks, they-were just along the road at St Andrews last Saturday, their only game since the aborted affl!-ir on 10 February, and prior to that, wei:e at Glenrothes. A place in the next round of the East of Scotland Cup is at stake today and the fact that there is currently no cup sponsor, makes little difference to the prestige of the competition, which is second only to the Scottish Junior Cup in scale. Penicuik's are one of the association's most ambitious clubs and their record since re-forming in 2002 is fairly impressive. It was third time lucky in 2005 for promotion from the bottom division as, after two successive seasons finishing in third place in the Lothians Division 2, Penicuik fmally lifted the title then last season ran champions Camelon close, to fmish runners-up in Division 1 and thus secure a place in the newly created Premier Division, the feeder for the Super League. Penicuik have become well used to travelling this season, their league programme alone guarantees eight trips north across the Forth.

Although injury will deprive Penicuik of the services of Brian Ryrie and Andy Seaton, Kevin Milne, who would have missed the game when originally scheduled, is available and it will be an experienced and fairly settled team which runs out today. Defender or midfielder Dougie Hope was with Dave Baikie at Arbroath and there was a time when the current East Fife boss was looking to bring him to the Canniepairt, but be ended up at Linlithgow. Midfielder Jack Lynch, has been over the course with Arniston and others who have played at the Canniepairt are defender Keith Salton (Bo'ness) and striker John Harvey (Bonnyrigg Rose). Harvey was Athletic's top marksman last season with 32 strikes and he's again leading the list with 15 this season, including both at St Andrews last week in a 2-2 draw. Also among the goals bas been the talented former senior Martin Cameron and early season acquisition from Newtongrange Star, Ryan Gay who had netted in each of his club's three matches prior to last Saturday. In fact, goals have been very plentiful for Penicuik recently and you've got to go back something like twelve games since they last drew a blank, a period during which they have averaged almost three goals a game.

Tayport will be boosted by having their new managerial team of Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean in the dugout for the first time and the locals will be anxious to see an up tum in home form. There will be changes from the side which won well at Kinnoull last week under trying circumstances. Murray McDowell starts a three game suspension today and another absentee will be Steven Cook who has been recalled by Arbroath. · Skipper .Roberto Morris, Murray Urquhart, Derek Wemyss and Brian Livie would all have missed the 10 Feb game v Penicuik, but are all available today. Brian Livie hasn't started since the end of the year and he, along with Robbie Henderson and Malcolm Downie, will be out to show the new management what they can do. If all square after 90 minutes, the tie goes straight into a penalty shoot-out. '

A new managerial team at The Canniepairt.

Tayport FC announced the appointment of a new managerial team of Frank Conway (pictured right) and Ian Gilzean (left) immediately after last Saturday's game at Kin-noull . We ' d like to wish both Frank and Ian a · warm welcome to the club.

Frank and Ian were the pick of an impressive list of applicants and got down to work immediately after meeting with the players at training on Monday. Both spent a number of years in the Senior game before moving into coaching with Lochee Harp , Frank with Brechin City, Livingston and Montrose , amongst other, while Ian (and we don't know yet whether he gets his father's moniker, Gillie) counts Tottenham Hotspur, Northampton, Dundee and Montrose amongst an array of former clubs . Both left Beechwood with Lochee Harp's best wishes and we are grateful that they were able to move across the Tay Bridge at short notice.

Tayport FC would like to record its thanks and appreciation for the job done by the outgoing manager Keith Burgess and his assistant Willie Garner. Keith's tenure at Tayport saw him lift the Scottish Cup and Super League title in successive seasons, quite an achievement on a football CV. We wish Keith all the best for the future. Willie Garner also leaves with our best wishes. Willie was at the Canniepairt for less than a year but in that time, he demonstrated a high level of knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment for which we are grateful. We look forward to seeing Keith and Willie back at the Canniepairt in the future.

The Courier & Advertiser Tayport supporters may wonder why coverage of their team in The Courier has been pretty scant for the past eighteen months. Following an article in a Tayport FC Match Programme in season 2005/06 in which the club questioned a comment attributed to the then Tayport manager, Keith Burgess, The Courier made a conscious decision to scale coverage ofTayport FC down to a minimum. Keith repeatedly assured the committee that he had been misquoted . The Courier insisted their report was accurate . The Club backed their manager. The Courier 's Sports Editor backed his reporter , resulting in an impasse. Tayport FC now accepts the reporter's account was accurate and offers an apology.

Penicuik has long had an association with the beauiful game, with the origins of football in the Midlothian town traced back to 1882 but Penicuik Athletic was formed in 1888 with the club playing in the Senior East of Scotland League after it was founded in 1893.

In 1904, Penicuik joined the Junior association and first made their mark nationally when reaching the Scottish Junior Cup semi-final in 1910. In the 1930s the club reverted to Senior status and the East of Scotland League, becoming champions in 1931/32.

In 1950, Penicuik moved from their original ground at Hays Park, now the site of a supermarket and Health. Centre, to a new ground at Eastfield Park. The club returned to the Juniors and in the 1960s enjoyed their greatest Scottish Cup success to date, reaching the semi-final in 1966 only to lose 1-0 to Bonnyrigg Rose at Tynecastle. In 1970 Hampden beckoned and 14,255 saw Athletic go down 1-0 to Blantyre Vies in the final after a 1-1 draw.

Penicuik built on the euphoria of the cup run to enjoy a successful period locally and, as seemed to be the case throughout Junior football in the Seventies, Athletic were wooed by the brewers and a social club was built. However the club' s fortunes waned in the 1980s and the social club went to the wall leaving a legacy of debt.

The Football Club was next to take a hit, going into abeyance in 1991 when Eastfield Park, which had been used as security for loans, had to be sold to pay off the creditors and a supermarket was built on the Eastfield turf.

Strident efforts to find a new ground were eventually successful and Penicuik Park opened in time for the club' s re-entry to Junior football in 2002/03. Despite the club's best attempts, they tnissed out on promotion during their first two seasons back in the game, but there was to follow two straight promotions which have taken the Midlothian side into this season's newly established Pretnier Division after finishing runners up to champions Camelon.

Penicuik has at least two connections with Tayport. Fonner manager Keith Burgess was enjoying his second spell as a player at Penicuik when the club was forced to withdraw from the Juniors in 1991 on losing their ground. The other connection goes back a bit further to the 1950s when our senior Honorary President Andy Phin turned out for our visitors in 1952 whilst working in Penicuik. How he fared is not recorded!

"The dawn of a new era" says

It's set to be a busy weekend at the Canniepairt, made all the more interesting by the changes which have taken place over the past month. Today's East of Scotland .Cup tie, against Penicuik, represents the dawn of the Frank Conway era, so, first and foremost, let's welcome Frank and his assistant Ian Gilzean to Tayport and wish them the best of fortune in their bid to help the club to continued success .

Sadly , Keith Burgess's spell In charge ended three weeks ago, following the 2-1 loss at home to Whitburn. In what was a near replica of the trip to Central Park, 'Bum were gifted a couple of goals In a gamt1 'Port pretty much dominated. Ronnie Kenneth pulled one back, midway through the second half, but the visitors, who have an uncanny knack of beating Tayport, held on.

The defeat was the latest in a series of poor results in the Super League and a change of direction was probably for the best, but Keith Burgess can hold his head up high , as overall, his tenure was a successful one . He masterminded the triumphant 2005 Scottish Junior Cup campaign, in its entirety, then guided the team to the Super League title the next season. Winning that championship is no mean feat and, there were also a few local and inter-regional cup wins along the way. Burgess will bounce back.

Responsibility for team matters then fell to Willie Garner, who oversaw the draw against Hill o'Beath, the game having been switched to Tayport, due to an unplayable Keirs Park. In a bright start, Bryan Duell, set up by right-winger for the day, Chris Webster, netted the opener, only for the Haws to gain a second half penalty and, subsequently, a point, after Stefan Winiarski beat Frazer Fitzpatrick from twelve yards.

A new, albeit temporary, management team was in place at Tulloch Park. Fraser Mann, Steven Stewart and Grant Paterson, three Cannlepalrt legends, were at the helm for Tayport's narrow victory over Kinnoull. Former 'keeper Duncan Bruce was on form, making some excellent stops during the second half especially. He couldn't, however, stop Chris Webster's 55th minute drive and three crucial points were chalked up.

A break from league action this weekend, but the pressure Is on, nonetheless. Thus far, 'Port have made no Impact whatsoever In the East of Scotland Cup. Perhaps this will be our year. Frank and Ian, best of luck!

WIN £2,000 THIS WEEK IN TAYPORT FC's SUPER SIX WEEKLY LOTTERY

Have you got your ticket? You've got to be in it to win it!

The ·Manager's Page

Good afternoon,

it is particularly pleasing to be writing this page as part of the new management team .

Firstly I would just like to thank the committee for giving Ian and myself this opportunity to manage what has been the best Junior team in Scotland for over a decade .

The last week has been very hectic, but it is a job that we are both relishing . There is a lot of hard work ahead but as long as we are all pulling in the same direction wa can achieve the results and performances that the supporters are accustomed to .

The players have responded well, as expected, to our appointment . Training has been very upbeat, apart from the horrendous weather on our first training night, but we are all eagerly awaiting today's fixture against Penicuik Athletic.

Willie Mc:Ginley has assembled a v,ery good squad which is sitting mid-table in the Super League Premier Division. Their results have been up and down but recently have been on a good run. We will definitely have to be at our best to achieve a result today , .

We can also look forward to a Fife Derby when we meat East Fife here on Sunday in a benefit game for the 'Karen Dewar Memorial Garden Fund' . I would like to thank Dave Baikie for agreeing to bring his team to play for a very worthwhile cause .

It is important that Tayport FC participates in such events to retain our strong links within the local · comm.unity.

They say football is a fickle game, but Ian and I have been delighted by all the phone calls and messages fro• managers and p1ayers a1ike, wishing us evexy success .

PENICUIK, MIDLOTIDAN

Since this is our first ever game v Penicuik, we thought we'd tell you a wee bit about Penicuik, the town. Situated on the west bank of the River North Esk, 10 miles south of Edinburgh in Midlothian, Penicuik had a population of 14,759 (Tayport 3,847) at the 200 I census, down considerably from the 17,000 of a decade earlier. The 2001 census also tells us that the male/female population split was 48% / 52% (Tayport - 47%/53%) and 88 % of Pencuikians (Tayport - 86%) were born in Scotland. How about that for some useless information! Penicuik was established on the back of the paper making industry but gradually the mills closed, leaving only a Curtis Fine Papers Mill in nearby Auchendinny Penicuik is the site of the tragic Mauricewood Pit mining disaster of 1889 when 63 miners; men and boys, lost their lives in a fire in the pit which had only opened 14 years earlier

Well, no prizes for guessing what the main interest of the local Junior press and websites has been since our last programme . It was, of course the club parting company with Keith Burgess and the subsequent appointment of Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean.

The Evening Telegraph was first out of the blocks with a back page headline on Tuesday 20 Feb " 'Port shock as Burgess gets bullet" The Tele noted that "recent performances saw growing unrest among Canniepairtfans and speculation began to mount over his position" and Keith was quoted as saying "They [Tayport] are a great club with fantastic players". The Sun had "Budgie in a flap" and, controversial as ever, quoted Keith as feeling ''very let down by the club". The Courier pointed out that Tayport " .... were languishing in the bottom half of the league", and contended that "his departure is not entirely a surprise, because speculation over his position J1as been rife since the sacking of his assistant Stewart Williamson last summer" The Fife Herald (Feb 23) noted that "Burgess' tenure had come under mounting p ressure ... but a meagre seven points and eight goals from the last eight league fvctures brought the Burgess era to an end, although he leaves the Canniepairt with the club's best wishes" In the Tele's Junior page (Feb 23) speculation was beginning to intensify, with several names being linked to the vacancy . But the headline, supported by a photo of big Willie, ran "Garner in charge/or Haws trip", a reference to Willie taking over on an interim basis. The Herald, however , provided the definitive position on Willie ' s situation with an interview in the March 2 edition . Said Willie, "/ have a day job which takes up a lot of time, so helping Keith out in a coaching capacity had been ideal, but I'm not looking to the management side of things. I probably live too far away as well" Tayport continued to attract the headlines with Friday ' s Evening Telegraph running with "Rudderless sllip at 'Port", a reference to the fact that Willie Gamer had stood down and senior players Steven Stewart, Grant Paterson and Fraser Mann were in charge for the next day's league game at Kinnoull. "We will take our time", said the club secretary, quoted in Tile Tele, but the news of the new appointment was out with the results on Saturday evening on the club 's website and Newsline.

The Sunday Post was off the mark quickly with a photo of the new managerial team of Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean . The Courier on Monday noted that Conway 's name hadn 't been linked with the vacancy but quoted Frank as saying that himself and Ian Gilzean " ... are looking forward to maintaining the club's pedigree" The Sun's Scott Campbell on Monday also reported the appointment and quoted Frank as saying "you are expected to win every game but that's a pressure and a challenge myself and Jan are looking forward to taking on"

SNIF~ING ABOUT WITH

THE SNOUT When Tayport played Bathgate Thistle in the league earlier this season, the Bathgate team list showed that not one of their starting line-up lived in the same town. In our experience this was a unique situation. What makes it more amazing, is the fact that not one on the list was resident in Bathgate which has a population of around 15,000 souls.

A blast from the past this week when Kirk Jack, a former player and a member of the side which reached the semi-final of the Scottish Amateur Cup at Dens Park in April 1986 made contact via the internet. Kirkie is now back in Scotland after a spell in Derry NI and staying near Clydebank. He took in our tie at Clydebank last season but claimed he didn't see any familiar faces. What prompted bis contact ,however, was meeting a guy in a pub. They got nattering about football and the guy, on learning Kirkie is from Dundee, tells him his claim to fame was playing in a Scottish Amateur Cup semi final at Dens Park for Barr & Stroud. Well, it's a small world, says Kirkie, I was playing against you that day for Taypnrt! Kirk claims they are best of buddies now and he was looking for some match detail from the Archives.

Not many will recall the fact that, on five occasions in season 20002/03 - 2 x Scottish Cup ties, 2 x Bell's League Div 3 matches and a CIS Cup tie in season 2002/03, Tayport's Robbie Henderson and Chris Webster turned out in the same Montrose FC team as our new managerial duo of Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean. For the record they were League defeats at Morton and at home to Albion Rovers, a CIS League Cup defeat at Cowdenbeath, a Scottish Cup win at home to Berwick and a Scottish Cup exit at Raith Rovers.

There are currently proposals out for consultation on measures to avoid fixture congestion for next season. The proposals, however, don't seem to have been particularly well conceived, but I suppose that's why there's consultation. For Tayport's part it's intended that we play the same teams as were in this season's section. Although it's not stated in the consultation document, there is an assumption that clubs will play each other only once with the top placed team going on to the semi-finals. Another proposal is that the (Tayside/North Region) GA Cup be abandoned by all clubs in the East Region, the sponsor pulled and the sponsor be asked to sponsor the Currie Cup instead. The Challenge Cup would be pulled and only played for if time permitted at the end of the season. Clubs in Fife would get the opportunity to play in three regional cups - East of Scotland, Fife & Lothians and Redwood Leisure, while those in the North and South (i.e. Lothians and Tayside) would only get the chance to play in two - F&L and Eos or RL and EoS.
