This week the grade 1 and 2 classes had the opportunity to do garden classes as the older classes were at swimming. Some bean, zucchini, tomato and lettuce seedlings were donated by a gardener at Aspendale Primary School. These seedlings were planted out and hopefully will be ready to harvest by Christmas.

BREAKFAST CLUB
Breakfast is provided in the Banksia Room each morning for our students who wish to attend. Students attend for a variety of reasons and it gives them a nice start to their day of learning. The program is self sufficient and relies on volunteers and donations from our community. We have had some generous donations this year but as all programs we are always looking for more to ensure that the program can continue. Currently we are looking for donations of Milo, vegemite, jam and margarine. Donation's can be left at the office. Thank you for your support.
Secondary Transition News
Next Tuesday all the Grade Five students will
be attending ‘Red Earth All Rounder Day’ held
at Mooroolbark Secondary College. The aim of
this day is to provide an exciting opportunity
for students to mix with students from a range
of other primary schools and to simulate the
experience of coming to secondary school. We
are looking forward to a very enjoyable day.
Regards,
Sarah Tilley – Transition Co-ordinator

OSHC NEWS Notice for the upcoming Curriculum Day. Unfortunately, Antonio Park P.S. service on Maroondah Hwy is not providing any holiday care program either due to lack of interest. We apologize for any inconvenience that may cause.
The roll is an official document and by law each child must be signed in separately by their parent or guardian. This cannot be a staff member, and it cannot be the children themselves. If a child is attending an out of school activity and needs to leave OSHC, we require written authorization from the parent and for the child to be signed out by the person(s) running the activity. This week we are doing Asia for our ‘Around the World’ theme, and next week we will be doing a spooky theme for Halloween! Watch out for Madhouse in that same week!! A reminder to parents that children will need to bring a brimmed hat (not a cap) in order for us to be aloud to take them outside.
Oriental greetings from Chris, Kane and Natalie in the OSHC room.

5 Tips for Single Parents
#1: Kids - and you - need structure: As a single parent,
you are juggling all the responsibilities of housework,
childcare, paying Bills , etc. alone. Establishing routines
and schedules will help you balance everything and save
yourself some stress. Kids thrive in structured
environments where they know what to expect.
#2: As much as possible, co-parent with Dad: There are
some situations where co-parenting is not feasible or
healthy, but as much as possible, partner with your
child's dad to achieve the well-being of your child. Treat
each other with respect, especially in front of the kids.
#3: Get support from others: You and your kids need
support from others. This is true for any family, no
matter the parenting structure. If friends, co-workers, or
family offer to help by babysitting, bringing over a meal,
or taking the kids shopping to pick out Christmas
presents for you and dad, accept it with
gratefulness. Don't be afraid to ask for help,
either. Attending counselling can be helpful.
#4: Take care of Mum : You're carrying a lot of
responsibility alone, Mum. Make sure you intentionally
make time for yourself, even if that means sacrificing an
extra hour of sleep in the morning before the kids wake
up. Eat healthy, exercise, and get your regular doctor
check-ups. Your kids need you to be happy and healthy
so that you have more energy to spend time with them.
#5: Be there for your kids: You are not going to be a
perfect carer. But, the most important thing is that your
kids know you will always be there for them, that you
love them unconditionally, and that they are the top
priority in your life.
Don’t do it alone put your hand up if we can support
you in some small way.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Athletics Last week Dorset had 10 children competing in The
Eastern Metropolitan Track and Field Championships.
This was a great achievement for these children to qualify
to this level of competition.
The children -
Jin Rong in 200m. He came 3rd in his heat.
Georgi Clarke in High jump - came 2nd .
Alex Forth in High jump - came 2nd.
Thomas Sheridan in 1500m - came 1st
Breanne Heath in Shot put - came 1st
Luke Carroll in Shot put came - 9th ( Many children are in
this event).
The Girls 9/10 years Relay – came 4th in their heat.
Because they were in the fastest heat they also qualified
for the final with a recorded fast time. They came 5th in
final.
These were excellent results and the children should be
proud of their achievements.
Georgi Clarke, Alex Forth, Thomas Sheridan and Breanne
Heath qualified to compete in The State Athletic Finals in
a couple of weeks. This is a fantastic achievement for
these young athletes.

Dear Parents, Another eventful week at Dorset Primary School. The children are really settled and working beautifully. It is a credit to both parents and teachers to see the advances our children are making.
Swimming The senior swimming program has been a huge success. I have visited the pool each day and I am exceptionally impressed with both the children and the instructors at the pool. The attention the children are getting during the lesson time is excellent. The children are completely engaged in the program and seem to be really enjoying the experience.
Cyber Safety Last night the entire staff attended a Cyber Safety Professional Development. It came to our attention that it is our duty of care to report to Facebook any child that has an account under the age of 13. I ask you assist us with the monitoring of all the electronic mediums your child is accessing and ensure they are using the various programs sensibly. It is a difficult task but well worth the effort in the end. All apps/programs such as Facebook, Kik, Instagram, snapchat etc require the user to be 13 and over. See Safety tip sheet attached.
Principal’s Morning Tea Monday 28th after assembly the Principal's morning tea will be held in the staffroom. Please try to come along and have an informal chat. It is a great time to voice any concerns in the community.
Grade Placement 2014
Plans for the 2014 school year are well advanced with Prep enrolments being finalised, budgets and booklists
prepared, supplied, ordered and grade lists completed. Placement of children in classes for 2014 will be
considered in November/December. This is a complex process involving much time and consideration by
teachers to ensure children are placed in the most appropriate class settings. School policy is such that the
ultimate aim is to establish balanced classes throughout the school, balanced in the sense that numbers of
children in classes should be uniform and that a variety of abilities, interests, and needs of students be
similar. Criteria to be considered by teachers are age, academic ability, siblings, friendship groups,
behavioural and emotional factors. As usual, I am inviting parents who have concerns regarding the
placement of their child for the new year with particular reference to the above criteria, to forward to myself, in
writing, their views on this matter for consideration. Every effort will be taken to accommodate genuine and
substantial concerns, BUT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE WILL PARTICULAR REQUESTS FOR
INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS BE CONSIDERED. Please note that requests for consideration will be accepted
only until Friday November 8th. Classes for 2014 and teachers, where known will be distributed with the
December report on Friday December 13th.
Curriculum Day - Monday 4th November
Just a reminder that Monday 4th November, the day before Melbourne Cup is a pupil free day. No children
will be required at school on that day.
School will recommence on Wednesday 6th November at 9.00 am.
Grade 2 Sleepover
This will take place on Friday 8th November.
Thank you to the many staff and parents who will be involved in this great activity.
The tone and behaviour at the school is excellent. Kind Regards,
John Jacobs Principal
