FAREWELL TO AN ORIGINAL NINER
On Tuesday, September 27th the Niners raised a glass and toasted Carol Donahue. Carol was one of the original Niners and has been a strong supporter and member since the beginning. Carol and her husband are moving back to Carol's home state, Hawaii. All of the Niners will miss Carol and her welcoming smile at the sign-in desk each Tuesday. We wish Carol and Ray many more happy years in the “Aloha” state. Now that we have connections in Hawaii there may be more of us traveling there!
GOLFING ON THE HIGH SEAS
Many of us were worried that the Niners who went on the Sept. 10-17 cruise would miss their weekly game of golf. However, rumor has it that those onboard the Oasis had a stimulating game of Miniature Golf on Thursday, Sept. 15. Best putt, best trick shot, chip-in, and birdies have yet to be announced. Those of us left here at HP are sure that they provided themselves and others with many laughs.
MEET AND GREET
Election of officers is just around the corner on November 15th. In order to give everybody who has been away an opportunity to talk with our current officers and committee chairpersons, we have scheduled another Meet & Greet. It will be held on Tuesday, November 1st. at 11:30 a.m. in the Magnolia Room. Any Niner interested in running for office or serving on a committee is encouraged to attend and get answers to any of your questions.
Please notify Nancy Thomas via email if you plan to attend. ([email protected])
NINERS NEW TO GOLF
Rhonda Gibson, our rules chairperson, has begun conducting “The Rules of the Game” seminars to our newest members. Rhonda provides rules and etiquette information, from tee to green. If you are a new member, and new to the game of golf, look for the sign-up sheet for these seminars at our pre-game golf meeting.

Lunch to Follow
Congratulations to Bob Thomas for his hole in one on 8/29/2011 on the 12th hole. Bob used a 3 hybrid to make this extraordinary shot.
The MGA Association will put a keg of beer out on 11/30/2011 for all to enjoy at the end of the round.
HPMGA Hole In One Procedure
When a hole in one has been achieved by a member of the Men's Golf Association, the gentleman who achieved the hole in one will be required to go to the bar and establish with the bartender his name and account number. The $100 tab will not begin until this has occurred. The HPMGA will cover the $80.00 (the remaining $20.00 will cover tax and bartender gratuity). If the HPMGA member would like to increase the tab above and beyond, he may do so, with the additional amount being charged directly to his member account. All HPMGA golfers will have to go directly to the bar to receive their drink. There will be no cocktail service for the tab; however, if the member would like to buy food on his own account, he may do so.

Linda O'Leary was born and raised in New Jersey and lives and loves “The Jersey Shore”. Most of her family still resides there, two sons, two grandsons and one sister. However, her father and uncle live here in Hudson which gives her the opportunity to see them often…. always nice to have family close by.
Linda was a volunteer member for six years with the Mechanicsville Fire Department in New Jersey and held the office of Auxiliary President. Her career was in banking for 32 years for a small town bank which is now known as Wells Fargo Bank. She started in bookkeeping and worked her way through the ranks to Coordinator of Operations in Central East Jersey. Linda retired in 2002 and moved to Heritage Pines with husband Bill (Billy) of 32 years. They both enjoyed living the lifestyle of Heritage Pines making new friends and playing golf. Sadly Bill passed away in 2006, but not to be forgotten. In 2007 the Men's League honored him by creating the “Bill O'Leary Memorial Golf Tournament” which is an annual event. Linda is very appreciative and supportive doing whatever she can to thank all the golfers.
Linda loves ALL sports, but her favorite was horseback riding which she did for years, at home and on vacation, until back surgery in 2000 took her out of the saddle. Out of all the sports, horseback riding is the one she misses the most. But she keeps busy, saying she can't sit still, she has to be doing something, cleaning, cooking, golfing plus working part time for Bealls Dept. Store which she loves.
Linda loves to travel and enjoys the Tropical Islands with all the water sports. Her favorite place of all is Bermuda visiting the Island 18 times! (That is true love). She has been a member of the HPLGA since 2002, served as Vice President, President and Parliamentarian. She has been on many committees and is always ready to help where she is needed. Linda is a member of the Golf Advisory Committee, started the Community Memorial Tree Program in 2008 and is still actively involved. She loves doing this as it gives her a sense of knowing she is helping others keep their loved ones’ memories alive. Linda along with Joe Paddock started the Battle of the Sexes Tournament five years ago which has turned into a very successful event and is still going strong! She was on the Security and Safety Program for her Village and community. Last year Linda under went endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) on her thigh and lower leg. The Florida Health Care News featured her in an article praising the success of the procedure. (The legs are feeling great and looking good!). One important part of Linda's life was her Hole-In-One in 1994 at Cream Ridge, New Jersey. She drove 150 yards on a Par 3 all over water! You should be proud girl, Congratulations! Linda enjoys life to the fullest. Her motto is “Life is short and unpredictable so make the most of what you have”. Thank you Linda for being such a wonderful loving person and friend, you are truly an asset to our community!

Golfers PoemIn my hand I hold a ball,
white and dimpled, and rather small.Oh how bland it does appear,
this harmless looking little sphere.By its size I could not guess,
the awesome strength it does possess. But since I fell beneath its spell,
I've wandered through the Fires of Hell.My life has not been quite the same,
Since I chose to play this game.It rules my mind for hours on end,A fortune it has made me spend.
It has made me curse and made me cry,And hate myself and want to die.It promises me a thing called par,If I hit it long and straight and far.
To master such a tiny ball,Should not be very hard at all.But my desires the ball refuses,And does exactly as it chooses.
It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies,And disappears before my eyes.
Often it will have a whim,to hit a tree or take a swim.
With miles of grass on which to land,It finds a tiny patch of sand.
Then has me offering up my soul,If only it would find the hole.
It's made me whimper like a pup,And swear that I will give it up.
And take to drink to ease my sorrow,But the ball knows….I'll be back tomorrow!

Book ClubThe Heritage Pines Book Club meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month. On Wednesday, October 26, we'll convene in the Magnolia Room at 10:30 a.m.
The featured book is Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford - Historical fiction -Set during one of the most conflicted and volatile times in American history, a heartfelt novel portrays two young people in a forbidden friendship, a Chinese boy and a Japanese girl, separated during the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II in 1940s Seattle. In the opening pages of this author's stunning debut novel, “Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It's been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up during the war. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol. Now, 40 years after he last saw her, he is chillingly certain it belongs to his friend, and is forced to confront choices he made many years ago. A beautifully written book that will make you think, and more importantly, will make you feel.”
The schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:
November 30, 2011 – (Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, ththis month we will me on the 5 Wednesday.) - The

Beginner at 9:00 a.m.Qigong (Chee Kung)– Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Magnolia Room
What is Qigong?
Qi (pronounced chee) is the Chinese word for life energy. The Chinese character for Qi is also the same for air or breath. Qigong (pronounced chee kung) means breath work or energy exercise. There are thousands of Qigong exercises, of which Tai Chi is a moving form. There are Qigong forms that can be done sitting or lying down, but Tai Chi is always done standing & moving.
Qigong has also been called “Chinese Yoga”. Both Yoga and Qigong are excellent for focused stretching, strengthening, and health maintenance, but, unlike Qigong, Yoga has no direct martial art application and is not part of a particular healing tradition. Qigong is the foundation of both Tai Chi and Kung Fu, as well as being considered both part of and precursor to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Most Yoga involves very little if any movement, but because you are encouraged to get into the proper poses, it can induce more stress sometimes than it relieves. Qigong, on the other hand, is gentle movement that can be beneficial to all ages. Yoga can be too hard for some people, especially seniors, and if done wrong, can be harmful. The older you get, the more appropriate Qigong & Tai Chi practice become to staying healthy (our bodies are no longer what they used to be).
Qigong and Tai Chi is exercise that makes us feel good! It provides a gentle workout that doesn't leave you drained, but energized! If your idea of exercise includes the mantra “no pain – no gain”, come see what the alternative is; “gain, without pain”. Qigong and Tai Chi should always, always, always feel good. And since it does feel good, you will look forward to it. Qigong and Tai Chi are available here at Heritage Pines, and there is no charge for the classes.
Come: check it out any Thursday or Saturday morning in the Magnolia Room at 9:00 a.m. The best way to learn Qigong or Tai Chi is from a teacher. It is very difficult to try to learn from a book or video. I have been a student of Qigong and Tai Chi for 14 years, and I love sharing my knowledge of this wonderful mind-body exercise with all that want to learn.
Please note: New classes for beginners will begin on thOctober 6 .

The children taken to the shelter usually come with only the clothes they wear so it is important that the shelter tries to obtain necessary clothing for them. They are in need of all clothing items from newborn to age 17 for both boys and girls.
This is a wonderful time for the grandma's and grandpa's of Heritage Pines along with our many Angels to show their support for such a worthy cause. We will be having refreshments that day for our children's shower so bring your donations wrapped if you like and a Director from the shelter will be with us to open the gifts. Call Kathy Hendrickson for further info 862-2394.

Peekaboo
Hi Everyone, my name is Peekaboo and I am a Lil Maltese.
I am a Palm Beach Puppy as I was born there. I was eight weeks old when my parents, Nancy and John Bolduc brought me home to Heritage Pines. I live in Woodfield Village on
Summersong Drive. They drove all the way over to Palm Beach to get me. I came home in a little car bed along with my first and favorite toy, which is a little white dog, to help me adjust. I love this dog to this day.
I have two brothers both cats (named Toby and Tabby) which were born under the air conditioner of our house. My Mommy and Daddy quickly adopted them. We run and play all around the house, and when Mommy takes me out for my walks, they sit at the garage door and cry for me to come back. I guess they love me even though I'm only a dog.
I just love people and dogs and can't wait to see them walk down the street or drive their golf carts by my house. My tail wiggles I get so excited to see them. I want to run over and greet them with my kisses as I am so friendly and the same goes for other doggies. I just want to kiss everyone.
So if you see me walking with my Mommy on the pink leash on Summersong Drive, stop and say Hi to me and I'll return a Hi with my kisses.
Lots of kisses to everyone, PEEKABOO

thOn September 8 , we met for our monthly meeting. Twenty residents attended the Colorama Dinner and dance. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Judy Steininger for coordinating this event.
thOn Saturday September 10 , a group of residents from Pines Glen ventured out on The Royal Caribbean Cruise line’s newest ship to the Caribbean, Needless to say everyone had a great time.
Nineteen residents attended Derby Lane brunch and a great time was had by all, we even had a few winners which made it more enjoyable.
If you haven’t turned in your pamphlet to Rosemary Corrao for the Winter Olympics, please do so immediately so she can proceed with her schedule of events.
Call Linda Langevin at 819-2405 to sign up for Pot Luck on thSaturday October 15 and tell her what you plan on
cooking.rdThe Golf Scramble has been changed to October 23 , I
hope all who signed up can make it since I already have the foursomes set up perfectly by handicaps. This change was due to the fact that the Clubhouse has many events planned
thfor the week of the 29 . It was an effort but I got Kevin and Paul our F&B director to agree on a date. Please call me or stop me when you see me to tell me if you are able to attend. I pray you all can (Toni Arevalo 819-3430.)

Eileen Weber, one of our chairpersons suggested we should incorporate a Volunteer Program in the Village to assist those unfortunate residents who cannot do small chores such as:
• Changing their AC filters
• Taking them food if they are unable to cook
• Driving them to Doctor appointments, etc.
A Sign-Up sheet was passed around at the meeting and an E-mail will be going out so those unable to attend the meeting can be informed.
Pat Derlamer introduced a new activity for the Village; a ndgroup of six residents will get together on the 2 Sunday of
the month. Each resident of the group will be responsible to bring dessert, appetizers, salad and the host for that month will be responsible to provide entrees, such as fish, meat or poultry. It will change every month, all are required to bring their own beverage. If you want to participate please call Pat Delamer at 857-4155.
Murder Mystery Dinner & Immokalee Casino trip please contact Judy Steininger at 697-3019.
THE NOVEMBER MEETING WILL BE on the 10th at LAURA NEWKIRK’S HOME at 1 p.m.
