UNUSUAL SPORTS (continued):• Cheese rolling is a sport in England that

takes place annually on Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire. This isn’t just any ordinaryhill. Cooper’s Hill is so steep that it’s at a 70-degree angle in places. The sport involvesa wheel of cheese that’s rolled down hill. The rules are simple: Run after the cheese, and try to be the one that has the cheese at the bottom of the hill.

• Capoeira is anAfro-Brazilian sport that wasdeveloped during the time of African slavery in Brazil. It’s actually a form of fighting andself-defense, but is done through music, incorporating rhythm and dance. A group of people gather in a circle and take turns getting in the center to spar. In modern times, there is usually no contact, but rather near misses as the sportismoreabouttechniqueandstylethanitis about beating up your opponent.

The rules are similar to golf in that it’s played on a course, the strokes are counted, and the lowest score wins. However, instead of a ball, the players use discs. Instead of a green with sand traps, the course is usually not groomed and may be out in the woods, or at least has wooded terrain. Instead of trying to get a ball in a hole, you try to get your disc into a metal basket.

•Unicycle hockey is like ice hockey or rollerhockey but with unicycles instead of skates. Unlike ice hockey, there’s no physical contact with other players. Though there are unicycle hockey teams in the United States,Australia,Canada and other countries, there are only two countries that currently have national leagues: GermanyandGreatBritain.

Hot Spots Are Pesky Skin ConditionBy Samantha Mazzotta

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What causes sunspots? They appear even when we have not been exposed to the sun. -- Anon.

ANSWER:The sunhasnothing todowith sunspots.Afungus is their cause. The fungus depigments patches of skin so they are lighter than the surrounding skin. The sun comes into play only because it darkens the surrounding skin and the spots stand out like a sore thumb.Selenium sulfide and fungal medicines like Lotrimin,NaftinandTinactincanusuallydislodgethefungus.Thedepigmented skin stays light for quite some time, andpeople believe the medicines have not worked. In time, pigmentation returns. ***DEARDR.DONOHUE:Iam76.Iamthefifthofeightboys. Three had the shingles. Our parents are gone. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I recovered from shingles afew years ago. After hearing many horror stories about shingles, I wonder if I should consider getting the vaccine topreventanotheroutbreak.--J.V.

Fungus, Not Sun, Causes Sunspots

ANSWER: Almost every older American has beeninfectedwith the chickenpox virus, whether or not theycan remember having had the illness. That indicates that almost all older Americans still harbor the chickenpoxvirus in their nerve cells. In later years, the virus escapes from nerve cells and travels down the nerve to the skin, where it brings about an outbreak of shingles. Therefore, allolderpeoplequalifyfortheshinglesvaccine, regardlessoftheirabilitytorememberhavinghadchickenpox.Authorities recommend that those who have had a shingles outbreak get the vaccine. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Have you ever covered the topic of hot spots on dogs before? -- Barb, via e-mail

DEAR BARB: I have, although most of the time this pesky condition comes up as part of another topic. Hot spots are surface skin infections that generally look like circular bare patches in a dog’s fur and can be painfully itchy. They sometimes smell bad and ooze pus, but the most common sign of a hot spot is your dog being agitated and constantly scratching, licking or biting the affected area.

Dogs can develop hot spots from scratching flea bites, underneath tangled or matted hair, after swimming at public beaches and more. Untreated hot spots will spread, and while there are home remedies -- like dabbing a 50/50 vinegar-water solution on the spot a few times daily -- your

veterinarian can recommend the most effective treatment. Certainly, if home treatment doesn’t work or your dog’s condition worsens, you should consult a vet.

Prevention -- or management after a bout with hot spots -- is important. After your dog goes swimming, shower it off well, dry as much as possible and wipe the outer part of the ears with a dry cotton ball. Treat regularly for fleas to minimize their impact. Groom your dog regularly -- especially if it has a thick coat -- to prevent his undercoat from getting matted and trapping moisture and bacteria against the skin.

When it opened in 1962, it had a total of 16,000 square feet of space. A lot of veterans have been waiting for this: eased restrictions on filing a claim for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).Until now, a veteran not only had to prove that he (or she) was in a hostile location, but had to wait until records were dug up and sto-ries corroborated about what happened when. Too many times those records were destroyed or couldn’t be found. Or a veteran’s particu-lar role didn’t seem to lend itself to being in a stressful situation, although he actually was in the thick of things. Now we see an easing of the rules that have kept far too many veterans from getting the care and benefits they deserve. The particulars:The veteran must be diagnosed with PTSD by a psychiatrist either at the Department of Veterans Affairs or connected with the VA; the symptoms must be related to the stress that’s being claimed; and the stress must be consis-tent with where the veteran served, and when. This means that a veteran doesn’t necessarily have to have been 3 feet away from an explo-sion to claim PTSD. It’s the fear that can come from being in a hostile area that seems (finally) to be taken into consideration here. Let’s say a veteran was a cook or a nurse who was in an area where there hostile military action that could (and did) break out at any moment -- that veteran’s stress will be judged as valid. Fear of death is a very real stress that they’re now recognizing.Veterans can file claims for service from any war. If you haven’t filed, do. If you filed and were turned down prior to July 13, 2010, file again.

It’s Hard to Let Go of Parent’s

HouseQ: About a year ago, I sold my mother’s home to a friend of my daughter’s. It is a well-built old farmhouse with a couple of acres and lots of history. My parents added all sorts of per-sonal touches in and around the house, as my father loved woodworking. I’ve visited a few times since then, and I don’t like what my friend is doing to the house. The woodworking shop is filled with junk, some custom shelves were painted over, and he and his three kids don’t keep things very clean. I’m not happy about this. What can I do to get him to take better care of the house? -- Jim H., Gardner, N.H.

A: In a word -- nothing. You sold the house lock, stock and barrel, and the new owner can do pretty much whatever he wants with it. It sounds like you, or your daughter, has main-tained a friendship with the owner. Broaching this subject -- that you’re not happy with the home’s upkeep -- could strain or break that relationship.Probably the best you can do is keep telling sto-ries about the house when you visit. Like, “my mother used that shelf there to put up jam.” Or a little bit about the history of the woodwork in-stalled around the house. The new owner proba-bly will appreciate knowing more about the place -- if not now, in the future -- and might develop a sense that he should preserve some of that history. Then again, he may not. It’s entirely his decision.

HOME TIP: Have a few empty prescription bottles lying around? Remove the labels and use them to hold different sizes of screws, nails or other hardware.

• “If you have to give your child medicine that he or she doesn’t like, let the child eat half of a Popsicle first. Then give him the medicine, and let him have the other half. This is especially helpful during fevers or with vomiting, when you want to stave off dehydration. Ice pops are easier fluids to ingest, and the cold interrupts the bad taste of the medicine.” -- M.L. in Arkansas

• “You can buy fancy hide-a-keys for your home that look like rocks, etc., and have a hidden compartment. But you don’t have to go to the expense if all you want is to have a spare emergency key. Put a copy of your house key in a watertight container, such as a small, plastic Tupperware container, and bury it in a memo-rable spot. Stick a rock on top to remind you of where it is buried.” -- V.E. in Washington

• If your small appliance has a long cord, try looping it and stuffing the excess through a cardboard paper-towel or toilet-paper roll.

• Protect the teeth on handsaws by covering them up in storage. Cut a length of garden hose to fit the length of the saw, then split it down the side. Push the teeth of the saw into the split, and your saw -- and you -- are protected.

• “Here’s an excellent way to save money: Foster a relationship with your immediate neighbors to form a natural cooperative. You can borrow tools and re-sources, perform group tasks and share experience. These all build a better community, but they save money too.” -- A.A. in Florida

• Ladies, pick up a bottle of inexpensive conditioner to use as shaving cream. It softens and moisturizes while helping you to get a nice shave. -- E.S. in Georgia

• On Aug. 24, 1814, during the War of 1812 be-tween the United States and England, British troops enter Washington, D.C., and burn the White House in retaliation for an American attack two years ear-lier on the city of York in Ontario, Canada.

• On Aug. 27, 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau, an uninhabited volcanic island located west of Su-matra in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people.

• On Aug. 23, 1902, pioneering cookbook author Fannie Farmer, who changed the way Americans prepare food by advocating the use of standardized measurements in recipes, opens Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston. Farmer later edu-cated medical professionals about the importance of proper nutrition for the sick.

• On Aug. 25, 1939, “The Wizard of Oz,” which will become one of the best-loved movies in his-tory, opens in theaters. Though the scenes in Kan-sas were shot in traditional black and white, Oz appears in vivid Technicolor, a relatively new film process at the time.

• On Aug. 29, 1945, President Harry Truman au-thorizes the Navy to seize control of and oper-ate petroleum refineries to counteract strikes by oil workers. Oil, gas and chemical workers had worked hard during the war to meet production demands and now wanted to return to a 40-hour workweek. They resented the amount of money oil-industry CEOs were making off of their labor while they simultaneously threatened to lower workers’ wages after the war.

• On Aug. 26, 1959, the British Motor Corpora-tion launches its newest car, the small, affordable -- at a price tag of less than $800 -- Mark I Mini. Although only 10 feet long, the Mini could sit four adults and had a trunk big enough for luggage.

• On Aug. 28, 1988, an air show involving military jets at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany turns tragic when three jets collide in mid-air and fall into the crowd of 100,000 spectators. Sixty-nine people died and hundreds more were injured.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A relaxed mood early in the week could give way to high-tem-perature disputes. The Aries Lamb should resist being pulled into heated quarrels that could really singe your wool.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Satisfy that practical obligation first, then you can feel free to indulge in your creative endeavors. Also, check for hidden or overlooked areas where repairs might be long overdue.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home is still the Twins’ major focus this week. But outside mat-ters begin to take on added importance, especial-ly those involving possible career moves. Stay alert for signs of change.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A travel plan might need to undergo some considerable adjust-ment because of unexpected changes. Keep an open mind and let the facts guide you on how you want to handle this.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Playing cat and mouse with a matter you don’t really want to tackle wastes time, energy and, most important, an opportunity. Ask someone with experience to help you get started.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A shift in policy might not please you, but before you put up a “No Go” wall of resistance, examine the circumstances. You might be quite pleasantly surprised by what you find.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Yester-day’s critiques about your methods might have already evolved into today’s praise for your achievements. Good for you. Now go on and continue to build on your credibility.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An oc-casional temperamental flare-up might occur as you continue to help get things back to normal. Stay with it. You should soon get some idea of where to take things next.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A negative reaction to what you believe was a well-deserved request might mean that you need to reconsider your position and make changes accordingly.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) There’s always room for someone new at the Sea Goat’s table. And the someone new this week could bring a message you’ve been waiting a long time to hear.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A pile-on of personal matters this week might seem too overwhelming to deal with. But handling them on a one-by-one basis could have you out from under it by the weekend.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A friend might need your good advice regarding a matter. Be supportive. But unless you can be absolutely sure you have all the facts, be careful about any suggestions you might be asked to offer.BORN THIS WEEK: Few things make you hap-pier than bringing people together and helping to forge new friendships.

Would you want to know years in advance that you have Alzheimer’s disease in your future?

It’s a huge question, and getting an answer could soon become a real possibility. Scientists are now developing ways to pre-diagnose Alzheimer’s, as much as 10 years in advance, and they’re setting out guidelines on just how it can be done. Following these guidelines, they say, doctors will be able not only to diagnose, but also estimate what stage the patient currently is in.

Scientists predict that the minute these guidelines go into effect, the number of diagnoses of Alzheimer’s could increase two to three times.

One of the tests in the guidelines is a PET scan of the brain, where amyloid plaques, if they are there, will show up. The other is a test of spinal-fluid proteins. These two tests, along with the standard cognitive tests, are a big step from the current method of diagnosing Alzheimer’s: autopsy after death.

The drug manufacturers, of course, are all for it. The instant there’s a pre-Alzheimer’s diagnosis, they stand to make money -- there are a number of drugs in production they’d like to try.

The Food and Drug Administration is being cautious about those drugs, however. It wants proof that the drugs work, which will be difficult to determine quickly, as Alzheimer’s moves slowly over years.

There’s still hope, of course, of stopping any pre-Alzheimer’s in its tracks. Research extracted from the long-term Framingham Heart Study (since 1948) indicates that exercise can go a long way to cutting the risk of Alzheimer’s. Another recent study revealed that a diet with adequate vitamin D can cut the risk of Alzheimer’s. (Researchers aren’t sure, however, if vitamin D supplements will work.)
