Cook Many locations are named after famous people in history, many after natural features or events, and some are named after food, whether directly or indirectly. We’ll take a look this week at some interesting “foodie” places. • If you start off your morning with a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs, you should feel welcomed in Bacon, Texas, or Bacon Cove in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Add in Two Egg, Florida, and you have a delicious breakfast combo and some interesting locations! • Bacon Cove is a part of Conception Harbor, a rocky area of great interest to kayakers, scuba divers and archaeologists. There are many shipwreck sites in the area as well as one of the province’s last whaling wrecks that is partially submerged. • Two Egg, Florida, was originally named Allison after a family-owned sawmill opened in the area. During the Great Depression, the locals began trading eggs for other needs at the local general store, so the tiny little town changed its name. • Do you want some toast with breakfast? Toast, North Carolina, is just west of Mount Airy. By the way, North Carolina actually has a state “toast,” but it is not the kind made with bread! turn the page for more! Sometimes there are mysteries we just don’t understand, and this is one of them: Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia won Senate approval to halt the proposed Department of Veter-ans Affairs ruling that acknowledges three new illnesses caused by Agent Orange. Those illnesses -- Parkinson’s disease, B-cell

leukemia and ischemic heart disease -- would have been presumptive, as requested by VA chief Eric Shinseki. He did, one has to assume, do his homework before he stated that there was evidence that linked Agent Orange with those illnesses. If there is House approval, this move will put a minimum of a 60-day hold on paying any compensation or giving any benefits for those illnesses. During the 60 days, Congress will “study” the issue, likely using the same research reports that Shinseki used when he came to his decision. All the while, the VA has been urging veter-ans to go ahead and file pronto so claims for these presumptive illnesses can be fast-tracked.

Of all the senators who might have thrown a wrench in the works, Webb is a surprise. He grew up the son of an Air Force officer, is the father of a Marine, and served in the Marine Corps himself in Vietnam. He’s the “Webb” in the new Webb GI Bill. He called for indepen-dent testing of body armor to make sure it’s safe. Webb fought against replacing Norfolk as a homeport for the Navy’s nuclear-pow-ered aircraft carriers. It would seem, on the surface, that he’s had his priorities straight.Until now.Don’t let this delay tactic stop you from filing. Get the paperwork in because back benefits will start from the date of filing, once they get this straightened out.

Too many seniors are considering giving away their pets or taking them to the shelter. Often the senior is on a limited budget, and it’s getting too difficult to pay for pet food. If you’re in this group, help is available.

While there doesn’t seem to be a national network of pet assistance for seniors, small efforts have sprung up across the country. In some places, animal shelters have been taking donations of food and money to help people keep their pets. Call and ask for help. (Many have funds available for veterinary care, too.)

Call the Humane Society’s national number (202-452-1100) or go online to www.humanesociety.org. (You can use the computers at the library if you don’t have Internet.)

Do a Google search for: pets food assistance. Put in your state to find help in your area. Try this search: pet food pantry. Or this: pets food “need help.” Google also has an online article called “Having trouble affording your pet?” It includes a list of help organizations for every state.

Call your veterinarian’s office and ask if they know of a local help organization.

Many big chain pet stores are donating food to organizations on the local level. Call the pet stores in your area and ask if they know of local help organizations or if they donate to any.

Call your local food bank. Many are starting to take donations of pet food.

Researchers say that having a pet to care for can do wonders for our health. We get more exercise as we throw toys for a cat and get to socialize with others when we take the dog on a walk. Having a pet is good for us.

There’s also the little matter of love we share with out pets. Before you give up your pet because of the cost of its food, ask for help.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to Frustrated in Philadelphia concerning a cat soiling on the top of her bed. I agree that urinary tract issues could be the problem. Something else to consider is diabetes. I had a cat that suddenly starting urinating on piles of clothes and on top of beds. He also had lost weight. Watching the cat, I saw him “camping out” over the water bowl often, which caused massive clots in the litter and wherever he went.Obsessive thirst is a sign of diabetes, so I took him to the vet, and we are now giving him insulin shots twice a day. Hence, the problem with going outside the box has ceased. -- Jeanne M., via e-mail

DEAR JEANNE: Thanks! That is definitely another possibility to consider. Cat owners, if at any time your cat shows a change in behavior or begins repeatedly doing undesirable things that it didn’t do before -- such as going outside the litter box, eating or drinking changes, or hissing at seemingly nothing -- bring your cat to the veterinarian.Other signs of ill health in a cat include a dirty or matted coat -- cats are obsessive about cleaning themselves, so this can be a big sign of a problem -- wheezing, drooling or lethargy. And if your cat just doesn’t seem like itself but you can’t pinpoint any clear symptoms, check with the vet anyway. Cats are good at hiding illness; it’s an instinctive survival mechanism.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I started treatment for asthma for the first time at age 80. At first I took prednisone and albuterol. Then I had a Pulmicort inhaler. Now I am on Symbicort. The material that comes with this medicine advises that this LABA (long-acting beta agonist) may increase the chance of death from asthma. Exactly what is this telling me? -- E.S.

• “Baby wipes make great cleanup wipes. I use them on counters, shoes, the highchair, you name it. They are especially handy in the car. I keep a quart-size zipper-style bag in the front con-sole, and I find myself doling them out and using them often.” -- S.S. in Arizona

• “You can use a turkey baster to fill your iron’s steam reservoir. It’s easier than trying to pour water into that tiny hole -- at least it is for me.” -- A.L. in Nebraska

• “On the weekend, I grill up several chicken breasts. Then I cut them into strips and put a lunch-size portion of each in a plastic baggie. I freeze them right away. Through the week, I pack a lunch with salad and add a baggie of chicken to my lunchbox. By the time lunch rolls around, the small amount of chicken is defrosted and per-fect. And if I decide not to use it even for a whole week, the chicken doesn’t go bad.” -- C.T. in North Carolina

Reface Cabinets for Like-New Look

Q: I have kitchen cabinets that are several years old and look pretty dingy. I thought about restain-ing them, but would probably need to strip the old finish, and it looks like a lot of work. I don’t really want to paint them, as I just want a fresher look to the wood. Can you help? -- Bill in Sarasota, Fla.

A: You could look into cabinet refacing, rather than stripping and restaining. There’s still a bit of elbow grease involved, but refacing can make the cabinets look entirely new while only replacing the facade. In refacing, the doors and drawer fronts of the cabinets are totally replaced. Thin strips of veneer are applied to the cabinet frames to match the new doors. The cabinet hardware -- hinges and pulls -- are usually replaced as well. The cabinets themselves don’t come off the walls at all -- refacing simply changes the look of the forward-facing parts. The cost is significantly less than replacing the cabi-nets. It’s about $1,000 on the cheap end, where a kid-proof material called rigid thermofoil is used, and goes up from there. Refacing with laminate or wood will cost more.To do a refacing, you can work with a cabinet refacing specialist (some big home-improvement stores have a section just for this type of contract), or you can do it yourself. Either way, photos of the current kitchen should be taken, as well as measurements of your cabi-nets -- their length, width and depth, the length and width of the doors and drawers -- so that the correct-sized materials can be ordered. Refacing materials are often sold by the unit (a unit making up one cabinet or drawer) or even by the piece. It helps to have some basic carpentry skills, or know someone who does, to address any issues that come up before or during the project. And take advantage of the project -- while the cabinets are emptied out -- to fix any dings or dents within the cabinets themselves.

HOME TIP: When repairing or refinishing cabinets, keep track of the hardware and screws by placing each door’s hardware into a small plastic bag and taping in-side the corresponding cabinet.

• It was U.S. President Dwight David Eisenhower who made the following comment: “I can think of nothing more boring for the American people than to have to sit in their living rooms for a whole half hour looking at my face on their television screens.” • What we call coffee beans are actually the pits of the coffee beans.

• The dew that accumulates on May Day was once thought to have near-miraculous qualities. The mother of a sick child might rub a blanket across the wet grass on May Day morning to coat it with dew, then wrap the child in the blanket. May Day dew gathered from a fennel plant was thought to cure maladies of the eye, and itchy skin was sometimes treated by rubbing it with the dew. Dew from under an oak tree

supposedly made a woman beautiful for a year, and dew gathered before sunrise on May Day morning reputedly brought good luck.

• Despite numerous arrests and trials, famed 19th-century outlaw Frank James was never convicted of anything and never went to prison. He died in 1915, at the age of 72, of natural causes.
