Pet OwnershipBySamanthaMazzotta

February is Responsible Pet Owners’ Month. It’s aninteresting designation, really, as I’m not entirelyclear as towhetherwe’re supposed to be celebratingResponsible Pet Owners, or making pet owners feelguiltyaboutnotbeingasresponsibleastheyshouldbe.

Ononehand, I’mgettingplentyofnotices to remindmyreaders to take theirpets inforcheck-ups(if theyhaven’t done so already), get their vaccinations up todateandbasicallyworkharderatkeepingpetshealthyandhappy.Ontheotherhand,I’mgettingplentyofpressreleasesaboutscads(that’sright,scads)ofproductsthatapparentlyareabsolutemust-havesinordertobeatrulyresponsible pet owner.

To me, it’s all a bit weird. Isn’t responsible pet ownership ayear-roundactivity?Has it suddenlybecomeOK tojust condense our responsibility to our pets into the shortest month of the year? Is responsible pet ownership really beingpromoted, or is this just anotherway formarketers to convince pet owners that they have to have

the latest, most expensive tooth-brushing devices tokeeptheirdogs’teethfromjustfallingout?

Notthattherearen’tgoodproductsbeingtouted.Safetyharnessestokeepyourpetinplacewhiletravelinginthecar--goodidea.Better,saferchewtoysfordogs--anothergoodidea.

What I’mgettingat is this:Designatingamonth forresponsiblepetownershipisawell-intentionedmove,but truly responsible pet owners consider it a year-round occupation. SHOELACESHowmuch do you really know about those

useful little laces that tie up your shoes? This week, Tidbits delves into their history and bringsyouallyouneedtoknow!

• Someshortof “shoe tie”hasexisted sinceancient times. Early humans tied animal hides to their feet with pieces of leather, jute, hemp, stripsofbarkorlonggrasses.Evidencefrom3,000 B.C. shows sophisticated insulatedleather shoes fastened with ties of lime tree bark strips. As early as the 12th century, folks wereweavingatypeoflacethroughhooksonthe front or side of shoes.

•ThenameofHarveyKennedyisn’tafamiliarone, but he holds a special spot in history. Kennedy is credited with the invention of themodernshoelace.Althoughtheideahadbeen around for thousands of years, Kennedy received the first shoelace patent in 1790,andmadeacool$2.5millionforhisefforts(equivalent to about $50 billion in today’smoney). However, it wasn’t until the 20thcentury that shoelaces became widely popular. At that time, people were wearing slip-on,buckled or buttoned shoes. The buttoned shoes requiredaspecialbuttonhooktofasten, whichwas a rather tedious process.

•Whydoesyourshoeseemtocomeuntiedallthe time? Shoelaces of today are often made ofsyntheticfibers, whichmakesthemslipperyand more apt to come undone than cotton ones.Synthetics, however, are longer-lastingand less prone to rot. Untied shoes shouldn’t alwaysbeviewedasanuisance.Accordingtoan old superstition, if your laces continually becomeuntied,it’sasignthatyouwillreceivealetterfullofgoodnews.

• It was legendary American crime novelist Rex Stout who made the following sage observation: “Nothing is more admirable than the fortitude with which millionaires tolerate the disadvantages of their wealth.” • If you have an aversion to bugs, you might not want to take a vacation in Borneo anytime soon. The world’s third largest island is home to a particular stick insect that, measuring in at 14 inches, is the longest insect in the world. • You might be surprised to learn that the earliest recorded reference to a vending machine dates back to the first century. It seems that a mathematician and engineer named Hero of Alexandria invented a mechanism that dispensed a fixed amount of holy water when a patron deposited a coin. • In the African nation of Somalia, a man is

permitted to have as many as four wives -- but only if he can support them all. • Between 70 percent and 80 percent of the world’s fresh water is stored in glaciers, and all but 1 percent of the world’s glaciers are found in the Arctic or Antarctic. • You’ve probably heard of solar-powered cars (even if they’re not in common use), but you may not realize that there have also been examples of solar-powered airplanes, motor scooters and boats. • Those who study such things say that of the 785 million adults in the world who are unable to read, two-thirds are women.***Thought for the Day: “Moderate giftedness has been made worthless by the printing press and radio and television and satellites and all that. A moderately gifted person who would have been a community treasure a thousand years ago has to give up, has to go into some other line of work, since modern communications put him or her into daily competition with nothing but world’s champions.” -- Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

To Your Good Health ByPaulG.Donohue,M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Your article on arthritis was very interesting, but you did not explain about the arthritis that comes with psoriasis. I have it, and I know of two other people who have it. We don’t understand it at all. Please explain. -- B.E.

ANSWER: Autoimmunity is the explanation for many illnesses, including both skin and joint psoriasis. “Autoimmunity” indicates that the immune system -- our protection against germ invasion and other harmful attacks -- for reasons not yet understood, turns against our own bodies; in this case, it’s the skin and joints. The immune system targets joints in as many as 7 percent of those who suffer from skin psoriasis. That’s a considerable number of people when you consider that as many as 3 percent of the entire population suffers from skin psoriasis.

Skin psoriasis precedes joint psoriasis most of the time, but there are instances when both occur simultaneously or when joint involvement appears before any skin manifestations.

The fact that skin and joint psoriasis run in some families also points to a gene influence on these conditions.

Any joint can be affected. The topmost finger joint, the one below the fingernail, is frequently targeted. Back, neck, knees, you name it -- psoriasis can strike it. Like all arthritic joints, psoriatic arthritic joints are swollen, red, tender and stiff. The severity of joint involvement doesn’t always mirror skin involvement,

Psoriasis Sometimes More Than Skin Deep

but it does correspond to nail changes. Nails have small pits, become loosened from their attachment to underlying skin, often turn yellow and crumble.

Treatment of psoriatic arthritis depends on how bad the arthritis is. For mild to moderate cases, NSAIDS do a good job. They include the familiar Aleve, Advil, Motrin and many others. For more severe involvement, doctors prescribe drugs like methotrexate. And for severe arthritis, a breakthrough has come with the introduction of drugs like Enbrel, Remicade and Humira.

The arthritis booklet deals with some of the more common forms of arthritis. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Public speaking panics me. My job requires that I do lots of public speaking. In spite of the fact that I am called on to perform often, it doesn’t get any easier for me. In fact, I think it’s gotten worse.

My sister has a similar problem. Her doctor gave her a medicine that makes her actually relish getting up and addressing a crowd. Do you know the name of the drug? -- S.S.

ANSWER: I’m pretty sure it’s Inderal (propranolol). It has many medical uses, like regulating the heartbeat, controlling blood pressure and abolishing certain tremors.

It also controls the signs of stage fright. Many professional musicians have to use it before their performances. It’s a prescription drug, so your doctor has to agree to its use. Limit taking it to those occasions when you have to speak in public. It’s not habit-forming. It’s not a narcotic. It’s not a tranquilizer.

Thaw Frozen Pipes the Right

Way

HOME TIPS

Q: I recently read an article where a resident’s at-tempt to thaw frozen pipes using a small blowtorch led to a fire that burned out four apartments. Can you remind readers that there are other methods to address frozen pipes and that extreme methods like using a blowtorch should be undertaken only by a licensed plumber? -- Jesse L., MinneapolisA:Thankyouforthereminder,Jesse!Ablowtorchisaveryunsafemethodforthawingfrozenpipesforexactlythe reason described above. There are other methods to try.

First, prevention: Keep an eye on weather forecasts. Whenafreezewarningisissued, makesurethatatleastonetapatthehighestorfarthestpartofthehousefromthewatermainisleftdripping.Next, quickaction:Monitorthedrippingtapthroughoutthe freeze; if thedrip slows, turn the tap to a runningstreamandbegin searching forcold spots in thepipe. The likeliestplaces for frozenpipesare in sectionsofpipe located next to uninsulated walls or in uninsulated partsofthehome.Runyourhandalongthepipe,look-ingforsectionsthatarenoticeablycolderthantherest.Safethawing:Hottowelslaidoverafreezingorfrozensection of pipe is a safe and fairly effective method of thawingpipes.Haveahelperheatwaterinthekitchen--nottoboiling,justcomfortablywarm--andbringthepotofwatertoyou.Usingseveraltowelsinsuccession,dipatowelinthewater,wringitoutslightly,andwrapitaroundthefreezingsection.Whenthetowelgetscold,repeattheprocesswithanewtowel.Haveyourhelperkeepbringingyouwater.Ifyou’reworkinginanareawithaccesstoastandardelectrical outlet, you have additional options. Settingup an electric kettle will allow you to keep hot water close at hand as you work. Or, instead of the wet thaw-ingmethod,youcanuseahairdryer,holding it closetothepipe(besurethereisnostandingwateraround,however--ifthepipehasburstorwaterisleakingfromelsewhere,don’tbringelectricappliancesintothepic-ture).Aspaceheatercanwarmtheentirespace--again,keepitawayfromstandingwater,aswellasfromcom-bustible objects like cloth. If the pipe thaws safely, you’ll know it, as the water stream in the monitored tap increases. At this point you’llwanttoinsulatethepiperightaway.Ifyoudon’thaveaccesstofoampipewraps, usethebestinsulatingmaterial handy: layers of dry towels, spare foam rubber, and so on, secured with duct tape.Ifyoucan’tgetthepipethawed, oritbeginstoswellandleak, contact a plumber. If the pipe bursts, shut off the water supply to the pipe (unfortunately this will likely meanthemaingetsshutoff)andopenallfaucetsalongthe run. Place a container under the pipe to catch water and wait for the plumber.Inmorecomfortableweatherandlessofanemergency, insulate all your exposed water supply pipes and look at waystolimittheamountofcoldairreachingthem.HOME TIP: Going on a trip in winter? Leave the thermostat on at about 58 degrees F, open cabinet doors under sinks to let air flow, and have a relative or neighbor check the house during freezes to prevent serious water damage should a pipe freeze and burst.

Environment is Everythingby Sarah Wiley, State Licensed & Nationally Certified

When it comes to bodywork, we all know that the therapist’s skills are important. But to experience the full healing powers of massage, the massage environment must not be overlooked. Our surroundings directly affect our emotional state. While massage awakens our senses, the environment enhances them. The time you set aside for massage should be free of interruptions and unwanted noise. This is your hour to find your inner balance and just be one with yourself.

A good massage should help to remove mental clutter and noise, so obviously the massage environment should compliment this. We are living in a busy and (sometimes) difficult world. A massage session should be our sanctuary of peace…our “Time Out”. Soothing music, colors and scents all help us to slip into a more effective state of

relaxation. When completely relaxed our bodies and minds can begin to unwind and let go of stress. Neil Fiore, PH.D., a psychologist in Berkeley, CA, and author of The Now Habit states, “Research shows that to be productive and creative you MUST make time for relaxation.” He goes on to say that allowing time for relaxation keeps us from becoming resentful, burned out or cranky.

So plan some “Me Time” regularly. At your next session take time and notice your surroundings. What things do you find soothing? Think of ways to incorporate these at home. You can create your own sanctuary so that you can return to the peacefulness you experience at each massage session. Also ask your massage therapist for tips on relaxing and recharging in between sessions.
