Follow along as Tidbits takes a look at some of the interesting events that have taken place during this fourth month of the Gregorian calendar. • Noah Webster was 70 years old when he copyrighted the first edition of his 70,000-entry “American Dictionary of the English Language” in April of 1828. Although we’ve depended on Webster’s dictionary all our lives, his first edition sold only 2,500 copies. When it came time to issue the second edition, Webster mortgaged his home in order to finance it, and he lived in debt the remainder of his days. • InAprilof1973,MartinCooperstoodonthestreets of New York City and did something no one had ever done before. He placed a call from a portable cellular phone! Cooper, the general manager of Motorola’s Communications Division, called his competitor at AT&T labs using a 30-ounce (850- g) brick-like phone. Compare this with today’s phone at about 3 ounces (85 g). The process of bringing portable cell phones to the consumer market took 10 years, and Motorola introduced their 16-ounce (453-g) DynaTAC phone in 1983, carrying a price tag of $3,500. turn the page for more! Spring Heralds Start of Flea SeasonBySamanthaMazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to write to you about a flea remedy that works for us. My kids and I live in a rural area, and between our two houses have seven dogs and one calico cat. We used to have a very bad flea and tick problem until our local vet recommended using a product called Comfortis. This is a once-a-month tablet -- the dosage is based on the weight of the dog -- that costs much less than Frontline or similar flea and tick treatments. Since starting Comfortis our dogs have been flea- and tick-free.

Before we found this product, we would bathe our dogs and cats in a large tub of soapy water with 1/4cupofPine-Soladded.Thatalsowouldkillfleasandticks.--LouiseC.,Rison,Ark.

DEARLOUISE:Thanks for the tipon thenewfleaandtickmedication!Readersshouldconsult

their veterinarian about this medicine to make sure it’s right for their dog, as like any drug taken internally or topically it may interact with other medications a dog may be taking.

However, I’m not wild about the Pine-Sol bathtip. That’s a very strong cleaning solution that will dry a pet’s skin, which causes irritation, and also removes natural oils on the skin that help repel fleas.Theonly“household”soapI’drecommendwould be Skin-So-Soft, and even that just oncea month. Other than that, use a bath productformulatedspecificallyforadogorcat.

Massage and Exercise

by Sarah Wiley, State Licensed & Nationally Certified

Many people think of massage only as a luxury. However, massage should really be viewed as a health benefit. Here is why. Mas-sage goes hand in hand with exercise, nutri-tion and a healthy lifestyle. Regular massage improves flexibility and reduces soreness after exercise. Research shows that this is due to im-proved blood circulation and distribution of nutri-ents. Massage lowers fatigue levels drasti-cally, reduces anxiety, and improves overall performance. It is extremely helpful in manag-ing stress inducing pain such as migraines and other ailments that many suffer following a high intensity workout. Most sports teams, as well as individual athletes, already understand the ben-

efits of working closely with a massage thera-pist. Pre-exercise massage aids in the stim-ulation of nerve cells, thus keeping ligaments, tendons, and muscles loose and flexible. Post-exercise massage allows by-products from the metabolic system to be carried away more ef-fectively and speeds recovery time (twice as fast as rest alone!) Massage is excellent for weight loss when combined with a healthy exercise routine. Lypossage (which should only be performed by a certified Lypotherapist) is a wonderful tech-nique that reduces inches and contours the body. Ask for a free consult today!

•Twenty-seven-year-old James Cash PenneyheadedouttoWyomingin1902,andonApril13 of that year in the community of Kemmerer, heopenedhisfirstdrygoodsandclothingstorecalled The Golden Rule. He chose the name because it was his philosophy to treat others the way he would like to be treated. In his free time, Penneyworked as a lumberjack fellingtrees. Ten years later, his chain of stores had grown to 34 stores, and he incorporated them all astheJ.C.PenneyCompany.By1924,hewasgenerating an income upwards of $1.5 million a year. Today, the company operates over 1,100 stores with 150,000 employees and sales approaching $18 billion annually. And that little store in Kemmerer? Still there, operating on a daily basis.

• It was American educator Laurence J. • Those who study such things say that Americans drink more carbonated beverages every year than coffee, tea, sports drinks and juice combined. • A legislator in the Louisiana State House of Representatives once introduced a bill that would make it illegal to charge a bald man more than 25 cents for a haircut.

• The plant formally known as titan arum produces the largest cluster of flowers in the world, sometimes reaching more than 10 feet in height. What’s perhaps even more notable, though, is its odor: The plant gives off a strong smell that is most often compared to that of a decomposing animal. Hence the plant’s more common name, the corpse flower.

Remember the Termites? No, it wasn’t a‘50s band. The Termites were the 1,500 high IQ children in a study begun by Dr. LewisTerman back in 1921. Studies of that groupof people have continued to provide a wealth of information for scientists over the years. The latest project, a 20-year effort describedin a book called “TheLongevity Project” byHoward S. Friedman and Leslie R. Martin, refutes a number of so-called truths we’vecome to believe about living long lives.

Here are a few of the myths debunked in this study.

Myth: Athletic people live longer. Thefinding:The key is to be activewhen you’remiddle aged, but not necessarily engaged in strenuousexercise.Thelongevitybenefitcamefromfindinganenjoyablephysicalactivityandstaying with it.

Myth: Those with more education livelonger.Thefinding:Notnecessarilyso.Moreimportant than higher degrees was to be productive in whatever career was chosen and to push through challenges.

Myth:Thosewhoworry toomuch shortentheirlifespan.Thefinding:Beingconscientious, organized and detail-oriented led to longerlives, likely because people who have those characteristics are more likely to protect their health and live a more sensible, balanced life.

Myth: Relaxed people live longer. Thefinding:Increasedresponsibilityandchallengesbrought longer life. Those who were ambitious and motivated lived longer. Translation: don’t retire too early.

Myth: Married people live longer. Thefinding: Men who stayed married lived longlives, as did married or divorced women. Divorced men fared the worst.

• Have stubborn stains in the toilet? Put some teeth in your cleaning job by drop-ping in a denture-cleaning tablet and letting it sit overnight. In the morning, scrub and flush. It just might do the job.

• “Lighten blemish spots on your skin with lemon juice. Just dab on several times per day.” -- O.M. in Georgia

• “Collect small bits of soap into a cup or jar. When you have several, add a tablespoon or two of water to the cup to soften the soap pieces. When they are moderately soft, pour out the contents on a washcloth, fold it over and press into a bar shape with your hands. Peel away the cloth to reveal what should be a reasonably solid new bar of soap.” -- C.T. in Pennsylvania

• Save power with this tip: Use cold wa-ter to wash towels and jeans. Then hang them to dry -- preferably outside, but on an inside line is OK, too. When they are mostly dry, pop them in the dryer on air dry to fluff them up. Towels and jeans take the longest to dry in the clothes dry-er, and use a lot of electricity.

• Take soap scum right off your shower curtain -- spray with a vinegar-and-water mixture, then throw it in the washer. Hang it right back up, and those mildew stains are gone!

• Another great suggestion from L.D.W. in Illinois: When canning or doing anoth-er job, “always do the thing you hate first, and then the rest will be easier.”
