STUDENT HEALTH

During Terms 2 and 3 we often see an increase in student absence due to respiratory (colds/flu) and gastroenteritis infections. Whilst it is often difficult to prevent transmission, every effort should be made to minimise the spread of infection. The WA Department of Health Communicable Disease Guidelines outline the following best practices:

Students/Staff should stay home in the early stages of illness as at this stage they can be infectious and shed the virus, bacteria or parasite through coughing, sneezing, contaminating surfaces and personal contact.

Students/Staff who have had gastroenteritis should not return to school until they have been symptom free for at least 24 hours.

Parents should seek medical advice if their child has ongoing symptoms of illness. To minimise the spread of viruses, children should be encouraged to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissue and blow their nose regularly. Tissues should be disposed of properly and hands washed regularly. Absences from school need to be explained. This can be achieved by sending a note with the student upon their return to school, contacting the office on 9459 4333 or sending a text message (SMS to 0437 881 842) Please make certain to advise the school of any recent phone number changes.

We have been learning all about the emergency services in our community this term in Room 11. We have met a Paramedic who taught us what to do in a medical emergency, a Firefighter who taught us how to prevent fires from happening as well as what to do in the case of a fire and we also met Constable Care who spoke to us about how to keep ourselves and our friends safe in an emergency.

Fire-Fighter Mike spoke to us about the importance of smoke alarms.

We need to dial OOO in an emergency and ask for the Police, Ambulance or Fire Engine.

We even had a turn holding a hose!

QKR OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF PAYMENT

Seasons for Growth is a group for children who are transitioning through change. The Level 1 Seasons for Growth has begun this Term. We have learnt that about valuing my story and that naming

and caring for my feelings is important to help manage change. For more information about Seasons for Growth contact the School Chaplain or go to https://www.goodgrief.org.au/

QKR (pronounced “quicker”) is a mobile payment app developed by Mastercard for Australian schools. It’s purpose is to deliver convenience to parents and minimise cash handling. Use it for Voluntary Contributions, Excursions, Incursions and School Camp. If you have any questions about QKR please contact the front office and we will be happy to assist you.

The Thornlie Primary School Chaplain is available in Room 16 for a confidential ‘chat’ with students, families and staff from the school community on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Appointments can be made through the School Office on 9459 4333, or just drop in to Room 16. When feeling anxious or upset about something, ‘self talk’ can restore a sense of calm. Christine Thomas School Chaplain This project was funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations under the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program.

As I'm sure you're well aware, we've been busily collecting Earn & Learn stickers to help get some new equipment for the school. And to all those parents who have been collecting for us, thank you. We've been told that Earn & Learn finishes on 25 June, which means that we only have a few days left. So if you shop at Woolworths, please don't forget to pick up those stickers if you shop there between now and then. We have drop boxes at Woolworths Forest Lakes and Woolworths Maddington and of course in the school office.

A big thank you to the staff, students and families from Thornlie Primary School for the ‘tin’ donations to St Andrews Anglican Church Emergency Food Hampers at the Christmas Carols each year. Unfortunately, the hamper program has closed at St Andrews, but a new one is opening at Thornlie Baptist Church and will be available in July.

Thornlie Primary School

School Board Nomination Form

Why does Thornlie Primary School have a School Board? Thornlie Primary School is an Independent Public School (IPS). An IPS is a Public School where the Principal has been given increased flexibility and responsibility to make local decisions across a range of school operations to enhance education outcomes for Students. Principals of Independent Public Schools establish a School Board who represent the school community. Establishing a Board is an opportunity to attract a broader cross-section of people with a range of experiences and expertise. Strong community and business representation ensures the Board can make an even more significant contribution to the development of the school. What is the purpose of a School Board?

Work with the Principal and their communities to achieve the best outcomes for Students.

Provide a broad range of experience, advice and expertise to the Principal, and participate in key decisions as listed below in the policy making, enforcing and reporting of the school.

Promote the school to the community.

Last week was an exciting one for the senior students in the Intensive English Centre. Despite the stormy weather, the students went on the Rottnest Island Camp on the Wednesday, instead of the planned Tuesday. The three days were very busy and filled with a range of learning and fun activities. Activities included: historical walks to learn about the Aboriginal and colonial histories, visiting the museum, historical buildings, going underground in the tunnels and viewing the salt lakes. We made sure we also included some fun activities, we went bike riding, built sandcastles, star gazed and completed fitness challenges on the sand dunes. The final night we all enjoyed a dinner of traditional fish and chips in the island’s restaurant.
