LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Acts 2:1-11

When Pentecost day came round, the apostles had all met in one room, when suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the entire house in which they were sitting; and something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech.

Now there were devout men living in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven, and at this sound they all assembled, each one bewildered to hear these men speaking his own language. They were amazed and astonished. ‘Surely’ they said ‘all these men speaking are Galileans? How does it happen that each of us hears them in his own native lan-guage? Parthians, Medes and Elam-ites; people from Mesopotamia, Ju-daea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya round Cyrene; as well as visitors from Rome – Jews and proselytes alike – Cretans and Arabs; we hear them preaching in our own language about the marvels of God.’

The Word of the Lord

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (R.) Lord, send out your Spirit and

renew the face of the earth. OR Alleluia. 1. Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God,

how great you are, How many are your works, O Lord! The earth is full of your riches (R.)

2. You take back your spirit, they die, returning to the dust from which they came. You send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth (R.)

3. May the glory of the Lord last forever!

May the Lord rejoice in his works! May my thoughts be pleasing to him. I find my joy in the Lord.(R.)

1 Cor 12:3-7, 12-13 No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ un-less he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit. There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of dif-ferent ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose. Jn 20:19-23

In the evening of the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’, and showed them his hands and his side. The dis-ciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you.

‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’

After saying this he breathed on them and said:

PARISH GROUPS AND MINISTRIES

TIPS TO COPE WITH SELF-ISOLATION (From the Australian Psychological Society)

• Maintain a positive outlook during periods of self-isolation by:

• reminding yourself that this period of self-isolation is temporary

• thinking of the benefits of self-isolation to the wider society, including slowing the spread of the virus and protecting those most vulnerable in your community

• remaining mindful that medical and scientific experts are following strict protocols to contain the virus and treat those affected

• ensuring you have access to accurate, reliable and up-todate information that communicates what is expected from you if you are in isolation

• maintaining relationships with family, friends and colleagues (e.g., via telephone or video technologies)

• not overusing social media as you are likely to be exposed to negative news and get drawn into doomsday discussions - try to keep your mind busy with activities you enjoy such as reading, watching movies, exercis-ing and even spring cleaning the house

• structuring your day when working from home - allocate specific work hours, schedule breaks and set-up a dedicated workspace where dis-tractions are limited.

THE FIVE FINGER PRAYER This is a simple prayer using the fingers on our hands, starting with the thumb:

1.) The thumb is closest finger to you. So start praying for those who are closest to you. They are the persons easiest to remember

2.) The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach you, instruct you and heal you. They need the support and wis-dom to show leaders & teachers direction to others. Always keep them in your prayers.

3.) The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders, the gov-ernors and those who have authority. They need God's guidance.

4.) The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even though it may surprise you, it is our weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick or those plagued by problems. They need your prayers.

5.) And finally we have our smallest finger, the smallest of all. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. When you are done praying for the other four groups, you will be able to see your own needs but also you will be able to pray for your own needs in a better way. (from https://www.growingupcatholic.com/creative-prayers.html)

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

As we are filled with the Holy Spirit let us have the confidence to present all our needs before our Father as we pray: • That the Church, filled with the Spirit of Christ, may be renewed to pro-

claim the gospel throughout the world.

• That our community, may always be aware of the Spirit received in Bap-tism and be open to allowing our lives to be led by the Spirit.

• That the sick may experience the true presence and healing of the Holy Spirit.

• That those who have died may be purified by the Spirit and share in eternal life.
