Term 3 Week 2 Wednesday 29 July 2020 Together We Grow GROWTH, RESPECT, OPPORTUNITY, WORTH Welcome to All Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back to all of our students and families for Term 3. We are looking forward to another busy and exciting Term ahead. Thank you to everyone for working with us once again to maintain the physical distancing on our school site. SCHOOL BOARD MEETING Our next School Board Meeting will be held on Friday 14 August (Week 4) at 8.45am in the staffroom. This is our Annual Public Meeting held once in every calendar year that is open to the public. BREAKFAST CLUB Our Breakfast Club has now recommenced for Term 3 and is available to all students every Monday and Thursday morning. This service is provided by our P&C volunteers and is FREE to all students. Any Parents or Carers wishing to volunteer their services are welcome to contact the school. PICK UP & DROP OFF Phase 4 - Operating Guidelines for WA public schools Parents & Carers can enter the school with their child to attend meetings and for drop off and pick up purposes. In order to maintain the physical distancing of one adult per two square metres and in the interest of good hygiene, I would ask that Parents and Carers do not congregate in classrooms. Parents and Carers are welcome to continue dropping off their child/ren at the school gates should they wish to do so. One of the exceptional benefits of this arrangement has been the increased independence and resiliency of our students. Staff will continue to greet students at the gates and ensure they get to class safely. Parents and Carers who have a scheduled appointment or need to speak to a staff member are of course very welcome to enter the school site to do so. Thank you again for your continued support in regard to this matter. SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES Our next school assembly will be held on 10 August from 1.50pm. Parents and Carers are welcome to attend and ask that you maintain physical distancing whilst on the school site. SCHOOL BOARD AWARD The School Board Award is a new Award that will be presented each Semester to someone who has provided our school with outstanding service. Areas of consideration for this award may include but are not limited to Building a Sense of Community & Partnerships, Leadership and Innovation or Teaching and Learning. Recipients may include parents, school community members, volunteers and staff. The Award is simply an opportunity to recognise the wonderful and often selfless efforts of the many people who support our school and its students. It will be presented once per Semester at a school assembly. If you would like to nominate someone for this Award please email [email protected] with name of the nominee, and a brief summary of the reasons for nomination. Alternatively feel free to speak to myself or Tamba Matusch (School Board Chair). The School Board will then make a final decision on the recipient. FOOD ALLERGIES A reminder that a number of our students have allergies to foods such as peanuts and tree nuts. We respectfully ask that Parents and Carers for this reason DO NOT send nuts or nut products to school in lunch boxes. We ask that food is NOT shared amongst other students. We ask that you please reinforce this message at home with your children. Thank you. STUDENT DRINK FOUNTAINS All students are strongly encouraged to use a personal water bottle rather than the school drink fountains whilst at school. Please ensure you provide a drink bottle for your child. EARLY CLOSE MONDAY A reminder that our school closes at 2.30pm every Monday and at 3.00pm on all other school days. STUDENT PICK UP & DROP OFF A reminder that students should not be at school any earlier than 8.30am in the morning and all students need to be picked up by 3.15pm or 2.45pm on Monday. Thank you again for your support in regard to this. CHAPLAINCY CORNER

BUZ (Build Up Zone)

Thornlie Primary School is now a BUZ school! BUZ Life Skills is a proactive, wholesome approach that enables children to

develop emotional and social well being. Students in Rooms 7 and 8 will be participating in BUZ Power this term, focussing on the tools and skills for personal and group power – in order to make their classes and the school a Build Up Zone. This week we discussed and practiced The Power to Cooperate with Others.

During the COVID19 crisis, YouthCARE chaplaincy services will be ongoing for Thornlie PS staff, students and families; providing essential social, emotional and mental health support. During tough times, it is important to have someone to talk to. YouthCARE chaplains are there to listen, and provide a supportive place to talk. We offer confidential, non-judgmental pastoral care and programs based on respect, compassion and service. Our aim is to support young people and their communities who may be facing challenging personal and social issues. We listen, understand and refer to extra help, if it’s appropriate. As always, I am available for a chat on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays during school hours and, during the COVID19 crisis, by appointment at other times. Referral may be requested through the office (9232 3450), classroom teachers or email

[email protected].

How can you show respect to the environment?

In particular there are many beautiful warm jackets. There are also hats and lunchboxes in our lost property at the moment. It cannot be emphasised too strongly that all clothing, lunch containers and drink bottles should be clearly labelled with the student’s full name so the property can be identified and returned. Property not claimed after a lapse of several weeks is transferred to the Uniform Shop for disposal or resale.

Seasons for Growth is a group for children who are transitioning through change. The Level 1 Seasons for Growth has begun this term. We have learnt that life is like the seasons constantly changing and that, like the seasons, we enjoy some change and some we don’t. Some of the designs using pattern blocks produced by students in Room 1 during the first semester.

During Term 3 Week 1, the students learned about adjectives (describing words).

They used adjectives in their writing to make it more interesting. Together the class wrote Haiku Poetry. Haiku Poetry has 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line and 5 syllables in the third line.

On Friday, the children from Room 1 joined other students in Year 1 and Year 2 for the Faction Cross-Country Run.

The children were all very excited to participate and lined up eagerly for the start. Students ran the 450 metre course, following the tree line around the oval.

Congratulations to all students who did their very best and scored faction points for their respective factions.

Last term, on Wednesday, July 1 2020, students from Years 3 to 6 had an opportunity to participate in a yoga session at school. They learnt about different aspects of yoga and its value as a powerful tool for keeping good mental, emotional and physical health. Students had first hand experience of a simple guided meditation, a sound vibration exercise and participated in doing some simple physical exercises that can be done anywhere, anytime. Many students engaged deeply with meditation while others actively tried the physical exercises. The feedback from students has been very encouraging. Mrs Chaudhary Science
