Divine Liturgy of St. John the Chrysostom

    Ἀπολυτίκιον - Ήχος Πλ. Α΄ - σ. 152

Χριστὸς ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν, θανάτῳ θάνατον πατήσας, καὶ τοῖς ἐν

    τοῖς μνήμασι ζωὴν χαρισάμενος.

Christ is Risen from the dead, by death trampling down upon death

and to those in the tombs He has granted life.

    Apolytikion - Grave Mode- p. 155 - 157

While the tomb was sealed You shone forth from it as light, O our life,

Christ our God. And though the doors were closed You appeared in

the midst of Your disciples. O resurrection of all, through them restore

in us a new spirit in Your great mercy.

For the Apostle - Grave Mode

O Apostle, the beloved of Christ God, hasten to deliver us, a people that

has no excuse. He accepts you supplicating Him, for He condescended

at the Supper to let you lean on Him. Entreat Him, O Theologian, that

He scatter the persistent cloud of hostile nations, and pray for us, for

    peace and great mercy.

    Kontakion – Plagal 4th Tone - p. 275 - 277

Into the grave You descended, Immortal One, yet You destroyed the

power of Hades and as victor You arose, O Christ our God; You pro-

claimed to the myrrbearing women a greeting of joy, You brought

peace to Your holy apostles, and to the fallen You granted resurrec-

    tion.

Epistle Reading is from St. John’s First Universal Letter 1:1-17 THAT WHICH WAS from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - the life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was made manifest to us - that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing this that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

The Gospel Reading is from John 20:19-31 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but be-lieving." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to Him: "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

My Beloved Ones, I consider myself blessed by almighty God to have had the opportunity to re-live our Lord’s sacred Passion and His Glorious Resurrection in my spiritual birthplace; that is the Monastery of Vatopedi, where, in 1963, I was tonsured a monk, thereafter a deacon, and then a priest. It was indeed a blessing to visit there again, and I would like thank His All-Holiness our Ecumenical Patri-arch Bartholomew for issuing his permission for my visit. Having returned to our Metropolis and faced once again with the reality of the society in which we live, I continue to think on the celebrations that com-memorated the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, remembering His last days on earth—and of course, the Resurrection. In particular, I am focused on the Resurrection, which is the most important thing that our Almighty God, through His Son Jesus Christ, has offered to the human race. For as St. Paul says, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:14) It is not enough to proclaim our belief in Jesus Christ, as many Christians do, but we have to believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, who has been resurrected. For with the Resurrection, we have received the “ticket” in order to enter Par-adise, allowing us to meet our God and Creator, and to grow closer to Him. That was the goal of our Lord Jesus Christ and the reason our Father chose for his son to be incarnate in the flesh. The Resurrection is the fulfillment of His destiny. The risen Christ is here in the world! He is here and wants us to know that our real hope lies, not in our possessions or in the honors we receive; not in the degrees or in the jobs we hold; not even in the stocks or bonds we leave to our grandchildren. Our real hope lies in the risen Christ, for through knowing Him, we can have eternal life. XRISTOS ANESTI! Christ is Risen! +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta
