THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 2, 2022

Liturgically speaking:

* * * Christmas Season * * *

Epiphany of the Lord Sunday, January 2

regular Mass schedule, 8:00 am and 10:30 am ONLY

All nations are invited to sing the Lord’s praises for they have been called to hear the good news and worship the long awaited Messiah and King with the gift of their lives.

Our church building’s Epiphany window is found on the west side of the nave and con-tains the crowns of the kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, who have come from afar to worship Christ, the Infant King, symbolized by the Chi-Rho. The abbreviations for the earth's directions, N, S, E, W, show the four corners of the world or the entire world to which Christ was manifest.

Epiphany Blessing of the Home The blessing of homes on Epiphany is a very old Catholic custom. The Wise Men or Magi came to bring gifts to honor the King of Kings and they were blessed by Him whom they came to bless! The actual facts and history of the Magi are not nearly as important as the celebration. To dedicate our homes to Christ is to gain untold blessings from Him who manifested Himself in glory to the world on Epiphany.

20 + C + M + B + 22

The above numbers and initials are written above the homes’ main doorway. At the same time the presiding member of the household prays:

We have written the number of this new year together with the initials of the Magi. May God always send his angels to dwell in this home.

May He keep us always in His peace and love. May we provide welcome to strangers and to those in need.

May He bless our coming and our going so that everything that comes to this home or goes forth from this home may always be guided by the light of faith, hope, and love.

We ask all these things through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The letters C – M – B are wr itten because they are the initials of the legendary names given to the Magi:

Caspar , Melchoir , and Balthasar since the high Middles Ages. Another explanation is ‘Chr istus mansionem benedicat” or “May Christ bless this dwelling.”

The four crosses represent the four seasons of the year.

Baptism of the Lord

Sunday, January 9 regular Mass schedule, 4:30 pm eve before, 8:00 am and 10:30 am

This Sunday is the end of Christmas Liturgical Season. Ordinary Time begins on Monday.

Jesus is the beloved Son of the Father. All who are thirsty, come to the waters, to the Lord, the fountain of salvation.

for 2021 - 2022

Remember in your prayers…

In 2009, we began our tradition of writing the names of the sick needing prayers in a Prayers for Healing book in church. It stands near our statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the east transept because Christ, in his appear- ances to Margaret Mary Alacoque, promised blessings to those who practiced devotion to His Sacred Heart. Prayers for healing are one of the intentions during Mass and every Wednesday evening’s recitation of the rosary.

We pray for healing …

A family member must contact the rectory for publishing in our bulletin. We encourage everyone to write in the book in church themselves, as it is very comforting to do so. May our prayers and support comfort you and may ‘the Lord be your strength and your shield, in whom your heart may trust and find help.’

Lectio Divina is a very old prayer form in the Catho-lic Church used to meditate on the Scriptures. This directed prayer is for the feast of the Epiphany.

+++

Meditation After reading the gospel passage for today, Matthew 2:1-12, take some time to reflect in silence on one or more of the following questions: What word or words in this passage caught your attention?

What in this passage comforted you?

What in this passage challenged you? Prayer Read the Scripture passage one more time. Bring to the Lord the praise, petition, or thanksgiving that the Word inspires in you. Contemplation What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of me? When King Herod heard this, he was greatly trou-bled, and all Jerusalem with him. What events or circumstances cause anxiety for me? How can I be a person who brings peace to my community? Go and search diligently for the child. For what am I searching? How can I be more diligent in my efforts to grow in holiness? They prostrated themselves and did him homage. How do I show honor and reverence for God? How can I grow in humility? Living the Word This Week How can I make my life a gift for others in charity? When attending Mass over the next few weeks, make a special effort to be attentive to the prayers and actions of the Eucharistic liturgy and to receive the Eucharist with reverence. This Month’s Parishioners of the Month are Deacon John and Mary McManemin

John and Mary McManemin are this month’s Parishioners of the Month. John is currently one of SJA’s deacons and has been doing this about a year and a half. John grew up in Chicago and was one of five kids with one being a twin sister. He went to Notre Dame High School in Chicago and Fontbonne and Maryville college in St Louis. Mary grew up in St. Louis and is the oldest of three kids. She went to St Catherine Laboure Grade School and Lindbergh High School before going to Fontbonne College where she met John in September of ’85. They were married in September of 1990 exactly five years after their first date. They have three children Justin, Gillian and Monica who all went to OLS grade school. John has been a computer programmer since ’94 for Cass Bank and Mary has worked with the Special School District and the County Archdiocese and County Deaf Ministry as a sign language interpreter for the deaf since 1990. John was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and made a 10 day hike at Philmont Scout Camp in Cimarron, New Mexico. Then after their kids were older, he was called to the Diaconate. Mary was also a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. As a couple they love their bike rides, (moonlight rambles are the best). They love to go on cruises every other year with their faves being their Alaska and Jamaica cruises. Mary also loves to crochet now that her scouting leader days are over. Besides his bike rides, John loves to play tennis and is currently looking for a few tennis partners to get a game with. See him after Mass if you are interested!! When not bike riding or playing tennis they both love their Agatha Christie movies, Midsummer Mysteries, or any British show - especially Dr. Who!! Of course, Mary is crocheting while watching!!

Thanks Deacon John and Mary for all you do for SJA……

St. Joan of Arc Conference

NEW YEAR, CONTINUED CHALLENGES

“Happy New Year!” The wishes ring out in the media, the stores, and between neighbors and friends. A new year is always a time for new beginnings, a fresh start, a clean slate. Many of us make new year’s resolutions; perhaps to exercise more, or to eat healthier, or to get organized, or to learn a new skill or hobby. But many of our Neighbors in Need simply don’t have the financial or emotional resources to make a fresh start, or the ability to see the opportunities that a new year provides. Consider these recent situations for which our SJA chapter has provided assistance:

A parent of several young children became ill and needs regular medical treatments. Their spouse

needed to stop working to care for them. For the time being they have no income and are trying their best to stay ahead of their expenses.

A grandparent of 5 suddenly has full responsibility for all of the grandchildren for an unknown period

of time. Mounting medical debt is overwhelming an elderly person and their family’s resources have been all

but exhausted. For neighbors like these, the new year may not be a happy, optimistic time, but rather a time of continued struggle, stress, and worry. You, our SJA parishioners were incredibly generous over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays by donating your time, talent, and treasures to our Adopt-A-Family program as well as our bank account, so that we could immediately assist the neighbors mentioned above, and many more. However, our neighbors’ needs will likely increase over the months to come, with winter upon us and the increasing uncertainty of the pandemic.

We certainly need your continued financial generosity. But thinking about your own new year’s resolutions, could God be calling you to join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Have you heard His call to help others? Is it time to answer? Please con-sider joining us. Our team is small and highly dedicated, but the burgeoning needs of our neighbors have us praying for more help with the “legwork”. As a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you can help serve those in need, make new friends, and most importantly, grow closer to Christ. If you are at all interested, please contact us at [email protected], or call the Rectory office.

We thank you, and our Neighbors in Need thank you. Happy New Year!

Pro-Life Protecting the Lives and Rights of all Human Beings

In 1974, on the first anniversary of the chilling Roe v. Wade decision, which allowed for abortion on demand through the entire nine months of pregnancy, a group of St. Louisians, led by Loretto Wagner, went to Washington, D.C to protest that decision and to meet with legislators to discuss the importance of all human life, including nascent life. This January, for the 49th time, Missourians will join people from across the nation to mark this sad anniversary. MISSOURI LIFE CARAVAN is now accepting applications for the annual bus trip to the March for Life in Washington, DC. The annual March for Life will be January 20 – 22, 2022. Until ALL LIFE is pro-tected, the March for Life trip to Washington, DC is designed to meet with representatives and to peace-fully protest against the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion. This trip is open to anyone age 7 or older (CHAPERONES ARE NOT PROVIDED) . There will be several departure locations in the St. Louis area. We will not be staying in hotels, we will sleep on the buses. There will be stops for meals and for getting gas. There are restrooms on the bus. Seating is LIMITED because of COVID-19. The cost is $235/person. The deadline to register is JANUARY 15, but again seating is limited. In Washing-ton, DC the mask guidelines are that for ALL indoor activity, masks must be worn, even those who are fully vaccinated. For more information, to register or to sponsor a rider go to www.missourilifecaravan.org or contact them at 314-434-4900 or [email protected]. “Abortion is killing. Nobody can argue that. When a fetus is inside the uterus, it is alive and has potential and when the pregnancy is interrupted, ended, that fetus is dead. By any definition that is killing. I agree that abortion is the destruction of something irreplaceable, a human. But the fetus doesn’t have the same value as the woman seeking an abortion.”
