Pastor’s Letter November 5/6 Dear Parish Family, Autumn is truly a season of God’s mercy. More than four hundred years ago the English poet and cleric John Donne wrote these words reflecting on this season.

God made sun and moon to distinguish seasons, and day and night, and we cannot have the fruits of the earth but in their seasons; but God hath made no decree to distinguish the seasons of his mercies; in Paradise, the fruits were ripe the first minute, and in heaven it is always autumn, his mercies are ever in their maturity.

There is no season to God’s mercy. There is no time during which we must wait for it, no time in which it is unavailable. We humans often seem to worry about when and if we will receive mercy, but the scriptures offers us an endless amount of assurance that we have already received an unimaginable depth of mercy. This realization was at the heart of Thomas Merton’s conversion and one of the first books he wrote. The Sign of Jonas was a reflection on this single line from the book of Jonas: “I have always overshadowed Jonas with My mercy, and cruelty I know not at all. Have you had sight of Me, Jonas My child? Mercy within mercy within mercy.” In autumn here at Sacred Heart we remember God’s mercy in the love we have for all those who have died and who now we trust live within that mercy. This past week we celebrated the feast of All Saints and All Souls, a time to believe in the welcome given to those we have loved so much in this life. No matter what they endured in this life, their lives are full and alive in God’s presence. This year has been special too as our year of mercy. Our own open doors became a living sign of the inspirational message of mercy that Pope Francis challenged us to realize in our church. Mercy is a way of going beyond the ordinary hurts and struggles that divide people in this life and to extend to one another a little bit of heaven — undeserved and generously given mercy. The great Jubilee Year comes to an end for us on Thursday, November 10. But so many of those who have shared in the prayer and works of this year have told me that it must not end. They want to pray, they want to continue to be Anchors of Mercy. Is not that the whole point of a year of mercy: to learn something of God that is truly enduring? I have every confidence that the spirit of mercy will always be alive here at Sacred Hearts. In heaven it is always autumn. God’s mercies are always at their maturity. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

November is the Month of the Holy Souls.

Our church has the custom of giving a place of

honor to a book in which parishioners write the

names of their deceased. We recall and pray

for our beloved dead, trusting in God's eternal

love and mercy to welcome them into the glory

of heaven.

We invite you to share this time of remembrance by writing in the book the names of

those friends and loved ones who have fallen asleep in Christ. The book will be

conveniently located in the church's center aisle.

Lessons and Carols is a traditional Advent Service that began in King’s College,Cambridge, England in 1918. This historic service includes Old and New Testament readings anticipating the birth of our Savior, followed by the singing of a carol appropriate for that reading. Our program will consist of nine readings (lessons) and songs (carols).

Dear Friends:

I want to thank Jennifer Ferrantino for the wonderful work she has done here at SHJM over the past three years. I also want to assure you that we will be doing everything we can to support the program for our children in the days ahead. Choosing a new director is a priority and we want to take the time needed to find the right person.

Meanwhile—you can continue to communicate with the religious education office by phone and email. The best current email is [email protected]

Within the next two weeks I will be meeting with our catechists to assess our needs as we make plans going forward. Again, thanks so much to Jen and for your understanding and cooperation.

Be A Year Round Friend and Supporter of SHJM It’s that time of year when the days get colder and a time when many many SHJM parishioners have active plans. The migration of summer visitors, people heading to warmer climes for the winter, vacations, and travels all diminish the numbers of those who are able to worship here each week. But please remember that our parish itself is here year round and we never take a break from service and ministry. Last year we began a program of planned, automated giving, called First Fruits. It was a huge success and well over 10% of our supporters participate in this way. It enabled our parish to maintain a more consistent year round income. Automated giving can help insure that our parish remains strongly supported. So here are some ways you can do this: First Fruits: The easiest, and best if you are technologically challenged is to enroll in First Fruits. All you need to do is give us a void check and fill out a Frist Fruits Form. You can get one on our website, at the rectory, or at the back of church. First Fruits transfers a contribution either weekly or monthly from your checking account to the church.

Online Bill Pay: Chances are your bank already had a online check writing service called Bill Pay. If you have online access to your checking account you can set it up to write a regular check to SHJM. Just visit your online banking site and set it up for the contribution you desire. Remember to include your Envelope Number Pay Pal: Pay pal is another way you can make regular contributions. Soon it will also be a way that you can contribute using Credit Cards. Check our website and check back here for more information.

Our Lady of the Hamptons OLH Prep 6 student James Conigliaro of Wainscott

took the first place medal at the Catholic Middle

Schools Athletics Association championships held at Sunken Meadow State

Park. He paced his team to an outstanding victory at the diocesan finals, with

classmate Hector Maldonado of Montauk and fifth grader Michael Gilbert of

East Hampton medaling in the top twenty-five.

The next meeting of the OLH Alumni Association will be held on Thursday evening, November 10

at 7PM.

In anticipation of the Thirty-fifth anniversary of OLH, the list of alumni is being compiled. Plans will be in place for a gathering of graduates from 1982-2016, as well as graduates of Our Lady of Poland School (1961-1982) and Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (1926-1982). If you are an alumnus, or know of anyone, please send either their email contact or physical address to Sister Kathy at 160 North Main Street, Southampton…or [email protected]. Celebrate the great legacy of Catholic education on the East End!

We invite parishioners and friends to learn more about Our Lady of the Hamptons by visiting the website www.olh.org. Tours can be arranged at any time….even during the summer…. by calling 283-9140.

We know we are getting to the end of the liturgical year as our Sunday readings focus more and more

on themes of death and dying, end-times and the afterlife. In this Sunday’s readings, we learn about

the brothers who refuse to transgress what they believe is God’s law and hence are tortured and killed.

To us, refusing to eat pork may seem a poor reason to subject oneself to a brutal death, but this isn’t

about pork; it’s about one’s faithfulness to God. We also learn, once again, that Jesus is not to be

tricked by his opponents, this time regarding the resurrection. While the Sadducees show their limited

vision of an afterlife, concerned more about a man’s right to a woman (and no concern about the

woman, herself), Jesus informs them that in the resurrection there is no marriage. There, all are like

the angels, children of God. We could add “neither male nor female.” The ultimate union with God

makes all equal in worth and welcome. Rather than worry ourselves about the resurrection, we would

be better to attend to our own faithfulness to God and, in St. Paul’s words to the Thessalonians, check

that we are doing and will continue to do what we have been instructed.
