Land has always been important to The Wilderness Center. First, the dream. In 1964, college professor Arnold Fritz learned of community nature centers at a meeting. He dis-cussed it with the Canton Audubon Society and encouraged a group to visit Kalamazoo Nature Center. They invited the public to an open meeting. Next, the people. A winter storm hit that evening, but the meeting room was packed with people willing to volunteer. The Wilderness Center was born. Then, the land. A group of volunteers explored potential locations and settled on the Charlie Sigrist estate, a forest tract of trees that had never been cut; many are 200-250 years old. Those old Sigrist Woods trees were the reason TWC is located here, in the southwest corner of Stark County. A group worked to purchase the land. Ralph Regula, the young country lawyer handling Charlie’s estate, facilitated the sale. Together, three volunteers donated the down payment. A major membership drive brought in funds to pay it off fully by 1965, just a year after founding. The young Stark Wilderness Center owned over 324 acres (see map)—the Sigrist Estate (A&B), the Warstler Tract (C), and the Richard Estate (D). Today, we know tract B as Sigrist Woods but, as you see from the map, it also included much of the other property on both sides of Alabama Ave. The Sigrist Woods Trail, SWC’s first, opened in April, 1965. The guest speaker at the afternoon ribbon cutting, Dr. J. Arthur Herrick of Kent State, com-mented “There is nothing like it in the state of Ohio; if there is, you show me where!” The group also designed and sold a trail guide and established what is now the small parking lot at the Pioneer Path trailhead.

The farmhouse on the Warstler Tract was remodeled as a temporary Interpretive Building, with a meeting room for 35-40 people, an office/bookstore, indoor facilities, and a counter showcase. Although the house was moved to a Amish Farm when the Interpretive Building opened in 1974, the farmhouse site is still evident every spring when the daffodils and lilacs bloom around the Trumpet Vine Arbor. Through the years, the Center bought additional contigu-ous land, expanding the Headquarters Tract to more than 650 acres with six trails. Although some sections have been rerouted, the trails are almost as they were envisioned in that original plan. But even in 1965, not all of the Center’s land was at this site. The founders also bought Tusc Woods to give the Center a toehold on the edge of Beach City Wildlife Area and that nature study site. Today, through fee ownership and conservation easements, TWC is protecting 3,277 acres of land in Stark, Wayne, Tuscarawas, Holmes, Carroll, Columbiana, and Guernsey Counties. Zoar Woods is open to visitors, with a small park-ing area and a trail through a maturing forest lush with ferns and wildflowers. Other land initiatives make TWC a leader in land conserva-tion in our community. TWC’s revolving land fund assists other organizations and agencies in obtaining critical parcels of land. TWC Consulting Forestry provides sustainable management and timber marketing services for private forest landowners. TWC’s wetland mitigation bank is preserving 100 acres of forested and emergent wetland, with an addi-tional site in progress. The Wilderness Center’s mission is to connect people and nature. To do that, we must have nature; land has always been and will always be important to The Wilderness Center. By: Joann Ballbach, Education Director

A special visitor came to Ohio in April – SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER. It was first spotted at the golf course next to Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve in Huron, Ohio, by Dan Gesauldo. Usually a one-day-wonder if it shows up in Ohio, it stayed for quite awhile. News of the bird spread quickly via social media, and many birders had the chance to get a glimpse of this beautiful bird. AND, our own Su Snyder of TWC Bird Club, added this bird to her Ohio lifelist as her 350th BIRD – quite a feat! Congrats, Su! June is the time for nesting bird species. Males have been and are singing and displaying to attract females. The ones already nesting will be protecting their mates and offspring by songs and warnings. Be sure to get out to see these nesting species at Time & Optics’ “Optics Fling” on Friday and Saturday, June 6th and 7th, where leaders will be dispersed at different sites to show birders where birds can be found and, if you are in the market for new optics, it’s a great chance to check out some of the best at very reasonable costs. SEE YOU IN THE FIELD!! Until next month–May you always hear the whisper of wings…

The summer is quickly flying by. Botanizers continue to welcome new members to our club. Some wonderful folks joined us for a "club member only" hike and found that they would like to continue to come along as we explore new areas and visit places we have been before to find something new. On Sept., 6 at 1 PM, we invite those interested in coming with us to visit Springfield Bog. This is a new location for us. The leaders of the day will be Tim and Paula Lavey. For more information contact Paula at 330- 730-5731. Enjoy the summer; we hope to see you in September. Sandy Smith, Club President at [email protected]

There's no better way to escape the summer heat than by enjoy-ing nature's natural air conditioning - CAVES! The highlight of June for the Ohio Cavers and Climbers was the MAKC sponsored caving event at Rupert Cave. We enjoyed a weekend of caving and camping fun while spending time with some fellow cavers from PA. If you'd like to come adventuring with us, you just need to meet with us to go over proper caving safety and attire. We meet the third Saturday of every month at TWC but there are also more opportunities to meet us throughout the month, like step climbing at the monument in Canton and other hiking/climbing activities. Keep an eye on www.facebook.com/ohiocaversandclimbers for events.
