Welcome to The Weybridge Flyer in February and our first issue of 2014!
Its been full on here since the Christmas break, but weve enjoyed the catching up, following our little rest!
We are now fully back in the swing and looking forward to the year ahead, which promises to be as hectic and fun packed as ever.
So what do we have inside for you this month? Well, one of the Premierships locally trained
footie boys has turned his hand to writing childrens books. We catch up with Frank Lampard and see what its all about.
I enjoyed a delicious meal at the Toby Cottage in Ripley. What a treat! Their strapline says nostalgia with a modern face and it s certainly not wrong. This really is a fine restaurant.
We also include many local notices, with news and events from a number of local contributors, as well as a wide selection of local businesses for your convenience.
Remember that we now cover four local areas: in addition to The Weybridge Flyer, there is Look Local Bookham, Look Local Cobham and Essential Esher. Our magazines are reaching 26 000 homes and businesses across these four areas, ten times a year! If you are looking for an effective, affordable way to advertise your business or service this year, please do give us call. We would be delighted to hear from you.
Happy Valentines Day to you all! Warmest regards,

Blue is the colour, Football is the game, Were all together And winning is our aim! There was much excitement in the air when
I visited a local school in the area a little while ago! A very special visitor was due any minute and everyone was looking forward to meeting him!
Frank Lampard, the Chelsea and England football player, was coming to tell the children about some books he has written recently.
Better known for his footwork and midfield talent, writing is a new venture for Frank and we were all interested to hear why he had decided to write a series of childrens books which actually are not about football, although they do centre around a magic football.
The headteacher introduced Frank and welcomed him to the school.
Following this welcome chat, Frank started by reading aloud from his first book, then a selection of children followed him and read some more. The audience of children sat in silence; girls and boys alike were listening intently.
Frank told us that he has two daughters who are 6 and 8. He said they were his inspiration to write his books. He told us that they both really enjoyed it when he told them his own made-up stories, their favourite being about a group of children who had all sorts of adventures centred around a magic football; there were no limits to what they could experience or who they meet or where they could go. It gave great scope for a whole array adventures, whilst capturing & nurturing their imaginations.
Then Frank bravely invited the children to ask him some questions.
How long did it take you to write these books? Frank said he actually started to put them together about 5 years ago.
Where did you write? He said that he spends a fair bit of time travelling when playing different football matches and so he always took his note pad with him and jotted down various plots, so basically whenever he had some spare time.
Why did he write them? This was partly to encourage his own and other children to read more, but also because it was something totally different from playing football which he thought would be great fun.
What other books had he read to his children?Apparently, they really like Horrid Henry books and also a childrens book by David Walliams.
What sort of books does he like to read? Frank said when he was at school he really liked learning about history, so he enjoys books about anything historical. He also enjoys
reading famous peoples biographies.
Which one of his books does he like the best? After a little thought, Frank decided Book 5 was his favourite so far!
Did he do the illustrations in the book as well? He smiled broadly and said No I didnt, a gentleman named Mike Jackson from America did those for me.
Does he want to go on and write more books? Frank said yes, he definitely wants to write lots more adventures and continue with this series of books.
Whats it like being a footballer? Brilliant came the answer. He said It is really good fun but quite hard work making sure I keep as fit as possible. He said he has to make sure he gets enough sleep and that he eats well too.
How many goals has he scored for Chelsea? 207 goals for Chelsea!
Frank was great with the children and everyone really enjoyed his visit. Afterwards, the head teacher asked him if he had any questions for the children.
Much to everyones delight, he asked Who is the strictest teacher? There was a vast selection of answers to this,
accompanied by much giggling, but actually no one was singled out (phew!)!
There are currently five books in the series and Frank promises more to follow.
The first five are entitled :- Frankie verses The Pirate Pillagers Frankie verses The Rowdy Romans Frankie verses The Cowboy Crew Frankie verses The Mummys Menace Frankie verses The Knights Nasties
Thanks must go to the charming Frank Lampard for inviting The Weybridge Flyerto share this very special visit!

Bruces Doggy Day Care
Fantastic news! Planning permission has been granted for
Bruces Doggy Day Care! The support from the local
community, Bruces clients and local councillors was overwhelming. This played a huge part in achieving this positive result.
The council was inundated with letters of support, with over 100 people writing in, some of whom didnt even
own dogs but still supported the business! Elmbridge has attached a condition that the permission is only valid for Bruce Casalis and that should he stop using the land, it will revert to agricultural use, but the main headline is that the business can continue to operate their much-loved service.
For all those that supported Bruce,
thank you!

A Special
Evening at the Toby Cottage Restaurant in Ripley
If you are looking for a restaurant which offers not only tip top service but delicious food too, you really should visit The Toby Cottage in Ripley.
Full of character, with a menu full of delicious dishes to tempt your palate and delight your taste buds, it really is quite outstanding.
If you fancy a pre-dinner drink whilst you choose your dinner, there is a cosy bar to sit and relax in, a nice place to gather before you sit down to eat.
The menu really tests your decision-making powers, as so many of the options are tempting. There really is something for virtually every taste, I would imagine.
Cecelia and I pondered for some time before making our selections, which were finally as follows:-
A crispy filo pastry duck parcel, served with watercress and sweet chilli jam, followed by Tournedos Rossini, an 8oz fillet steak served on a crouton topped with pate and a rich madeira sauce for Cecelia.
And for me, scallops with pancetta to start, then Beef Wellington to follow.
Our mouths were really watering! As I said before, the service at The Toby
Cottage is second to none. The mix of friendly but professional staff is quite rare to find these days, and I noticed some regular customers were enjoying a New Year catch-up with their waiter, who incidentally was dressed in a very smart dinner suit!
Our starters arrived and were beautifully presented. The flavours did not disappoint either and both were greatly enjoyed. Even the bread was delicious, warm and fresh.

A Special
Evening at the Toby Cottage Restaurant in Ripley
Unusually, we had both chosen beef main course options. Neither of us eat red meat very often, but this was a special treat!
The smell as our dinner was presented was very good indeed and we couldnt wait to start. Our knives slid easily through both cuts of meat. My Beef Wellington was encased in light, crisp puff pastry and the vegetables were also perfectly cooked and very tasty. The Tournedos Rossini was disappearing in front of my eyes too! A very happy dinner companion sat opposite me.
To finish our meal, the dessert trolley proved too much of a temptation. A spectacular
Crepe Suzette for Cecelia was prepared at our table - very exciting! - and a white chocolate cheesecake somehow appeared in front of me.
A cup of refreshing mint tea was the perfect end to a perfect meal.
The Weybridge Flyer highly recommends the Toby Cottage. Our thanks go to Tony and Tony and all your lovely staff members too.
Opening times are as follows: Lunchtimes: Monday to Sunday 12pm 2 pm Evenings: Monday to Saturday 7pm 10pm
And so to flower arranging. Ha, I never thought I would ever write those words, because I am absolutely hopeless at it. Houseplants, no problem, because they are mostly simple and straightforward, and my own houseplants have learned to thrive very well on neglect. But flower arranging requires a great deal of skill and effort, plus the resultant display is inevitably short-lived. But suppose there weres a way of combining the 2 techniques?
In the 1950s, Violet Stevenson, a London florist, came up with just this idea: ie growing a group of foliage houseplants in a suitable container and embedding a flower holder near the front. The holder is then filled with water for use for a simple flower arrangement. This is called pot-et-fleur and combines the permanence of houseplants with the temporary colour of a flower arrangement. The advantage is that its principally a house plant display, kept bright and interesting or even seasonal by the addition of a few flowers from the garden (or Sainsburys).
The container needs to be wide and deep, and unless it has a drainage hole, a deep layer of charcoal at the bottom is essential. This is available from aquarium supply stores
or garden centres and works to keep the soil fresh. Choose tall plants to go at the back : sansevieria (mother-in-laws tongue), staked ivy, ficus benjamina (weeping fig) all work well. There are many suitable plants for the sides begonia, peperomia, African violet, pilea etc and then trailing plants for the front ivy, tradescantia and so on. When theyre all planted up, push a glass or metal
cut flower holder down between the tall back plants and the trailing plants at the front.
This is now ready for cut flowers of your choice. In spring, 3 or 4 daffodils would give a striking splash of colour against the green backdrop (if you like yellow, that is, ewwwww), and during the summer, youll be spoilt for choice from the garden: cornflower, echinacea, achillea, cosmos, roses, the list is endless. At Christmas, you could
combine holly sprigs with mistletoe to give a festive arrangement. Et voil, a very effective way to display 2/3 seasonal flowers, needing little or no skill thankfully, in my case.
If youre interested, theres a BBC link from the Chelsea Flower Show of 2009 which demonstrates this, although they use an oasis instead of a vase; http://www.bbc.co.uk/chelsea/features/arranging_wed.shtml
So, go, go gooooooooooo and have fun.

What can counselling help with?Counselling can help people who are experiencing a range of emotional difficulties, including depression, stress, anxiety, addiction, relationship difficulties, bereavement, anger and self-esteem issues.
Whats wrong with talking to my family or friends?Clients often sense that whatever is troubling them is not something which they can resolve on their own. Family and friends can sometimes help, but not always; talking to someone impartial can be particularly beneficial. Some counsellors (including me) will offer a free introductory session to allow you to get a sense of whether counselling - and that particular counsellor is right for you.
Will a counsellor advise me on how to put things right in my life?Generally not. But they will provide you with the safe physical and emotional space that you need to feel properly heard and to navigate your way through the difficulties. How they do this will vary from counsellor to counsellor, but it will often involve talking about life events (past and present), relationships, feelings, thinking habits and patterns of behaviour.
Do I need to be referred by a doctor?I always suggest that clients let their GP know if they are feeling depressed or anxious. He or she will be able to tell you what support is available on the NHS. Many people prefer to see a private counsellor or therapist. You dont need a referral for this and can simply call the counsellor directly.
Do I have to be depressed to benefit from counselling? Not necessarily. Ask yourself two questions. Firstly, is whatever youre experiencing causing you distress? And secondly, is it getting in the way of leading the life youd like to lead? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then generally speaking, counselling may be of benefit to you.
Is counselling totally confidential?Confidentiality is an important part of the counselling process. Generally, what is discussed in a session is confidential between you and the counsellor, with some very unusual exceptions, such as if theres considered to be a serious risk of imminent harm to you or others. Your counsellor will talk you through these exceptions before commencing work with you.
How do I find a counsellor?More information about the counselling process can be found at www.itsgoodtotalk.org.uk. From here, you can link to the Find A Therapist directory of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy.

In non-fiction:1. Dear Lupin. Letters to A Wayward Son by Roger & Charlie Mortimer. Roger Mortimers sometimes hilarious, sometimes touching, always generous letters to his son are packed with anecdotes and sharp observations, with a unique analogy for each and every scrape Charlie Mortimer got himself into. A favourite in Weybridge. 2. Religion for Atheists by Alain De Botton3. Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks4. Patrick Leigh Fermor. An Adventure by Artemis Cooper5. The Plantagenets. The Kings Who Made England by Dan Jones6. Coco Chanel. The Legend and The Life by Justine Picardie7. Walk the Lines. The London Underground
Overground by Mark Mason. A contemplation of London on foot over the routes of the London Underground.8. French Children Dont Throw Food by Pamela Druckerman. Can this be true? Read and discover!
9. Vanished Years. A Memoir by Rupert Everett. I described this earlier in the year as the charming and disreputable Rupert on some astonishing and moving encounters. Its more than that, believe me. 10. Is It Just Me? by Miranda Hart.
And in fiction:1. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce. When Harold Fry nips out one morning to post a letter, leaving his wife
hoovering upstairs, he has no idea that he is about to walk from one end of the country to the other. Deserves to be number one.2. A Possible Life by Sebastian Faulks. Love, separation, pain, drama3. The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier4. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn5. Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel. Volume two of the fictional depiction of the life of Thomas Cromwell. Just terrific. 6. Capital by John Lanchester. Like a 21st Century Dickens novel of London.7. The Testament of Mary by Colm Toibin. A deeply moving novel of the grief of Mary, mother of Jesus.8. The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of The Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
9. A Tale For The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. Favourite to win the Booker prize.10. HHhH by Laurent Binet. Operation Anthropoid, Prague, 1942 and the plan to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich
- chief of the Nazi secret services.
What a great list. You know, for me the perfect start to 2014 would be to take that lot to somewhere warm with beautiful light and sit on an extremely comfortable lounger preferably on a porch with a view - and read them. For better or worse, I have other preoccupations preventing that delightful diversion, fortunately mostly to do with books. But I can indulge the diversion and pleasure of the radio. I live in Sussex and

drive a lot, especially on our neighbourly M25. I listen to quite a lot of radio, and as a consequence, a lot of news. In his latest book The News, Alain de Botton, arguably our most popular modern day philosopher, explores our relationship with the news. Following on from his bestselling Religion for Atheists, de Botton turns now to the manic and peculiar position that the news occupies in our lives. We invest it with an authority and importance which used to be the preserve of religion, but what does it do for us? Mixing current affairs with philosophical reflections, de Botton offers a brilliant illustrated guide to the precautions we should take before venturing anywhere near the news and the noise it generates. Witty and global in reach, The News will ensure youll never look at reports of a celebrity story or political scandal in quite the same way again.
Here is something for all you old Bagpuss fans out there. Happy Birthday Bagpuss by Peter Firmin. Emily, Gabriel the Toad, Madeleine, Professor Yaffle and the mice are throwing
him a party. And its your chance to relive the old boy and perhaps introduce him to a new generation.
Dementia is very much in the news at present and this book is timely. Where Memories Go by Sally Magnusson. This is a very moving memoir from Sally, the
eldest of five children of journalists Magnus Magnusson and Mamie Baird, which describes how she and her two sisters cared for Mamie during her long struggle with dementia until her death in 2012. The book combines a deeply personal and moving memoir with a celebration of her mothers life and a call to arms about how we treat older people.
Mary Berrys autobiography, Recipe For Life, was a bestseller over Christmas. Its already out in paperback this month. Join Mary on her journey of nearly eighty years; a life lived to the full, with a wicked sense of fun and an eye for the absurd. Hers is the life of a delightfully traditional but thoroughly modern woman.
Whats this? Recent research conducted by Heathrow Airport found that a whopping 71% of travellers preferred printed books despite the attractions of a lightweight e-reader. Why? Because they prefer the feel of a real book or they simply want to leave technology behind while on holiday. And as for the joys of online shopping, according to a poll for the parcel delivery firm CollectPlus, online shoppers spent on average two and a half hours waiting for deliveries at home last Christmas. And two fifths of people say they have taken time off work to receive a parcel at home, while a quarter have missed or been late for a meeting after waiting. The end to end process of online shopping is perhaps not quite as convenient as it seems. Weybridge Books bricks, mortar and paper!

CHANGES TO OUR BABYS IMMUNISATIONS...
Having our tiny babies immunised is certainly not one of the most pleasant of duties as a parent but I often refer to it as a necessary evil. However, it can help to equip ourselves with a few facts.
The immunisation schedule has changed recently in mainly two areas.
For sometime now, we have offered three Meningitis C vaccines by the age of around 13 months (at 12 and 16 weeks and again at 12-13 months). However, the Health Protection Agency has detected an increase in the number of teenagers developing meningitis from this strain and have concluded that having the three vaccines at this age does not offer enough long-term protection against the disease. Therefore, the second dose has been dropped and instead will be offered at around 13 years. It is thought that the initial two doses are sufficient to protect younger children.
The second change is the introduction of the Rotavirus vaccine, which has been added onto the 8 and 12 week immunisations. This is a liquid slowly squirted in the babys mouth. It is well known in other countries where it has been given for many years. It was previously not needed in this country but again, an increase in disease-prevalence has been found and the evidence is pointing towards the benefits of offering this vaccine to smaller, more vulnerable babies.

Gross earnings for pension auto enrolmentQ: I have been reading up about my responsibilities under auto enrolment. But please can you tell me, when calculating the level of contributions for my staff, what constitutes their gross earnings?
A: Under auto enrolment, employers have new legal duties to comply with and may need to automatically enrol certain members of staff into a pension scheme and make contributions towards it.
For auto enrolment purposes, gross earnings include salary, wages, commission, bonuses, overtime, statutory sick pay and statutory maternity, paternity and adoption pay.At TaxAssist Accountants, we are working together with Scottish Widows, one of the UKs leading pension providers, to create The TaxAssist Accountants Client Pension Scheme, which offers a host of features and benefits for small businesses that are normally only available for larger organisations.
This exclusive scheme is available only to TaxAssist Accountants clients and offers auto enrolment benefits such as competitive charges, flexible transfer and consolidation
options and a choice of options upon retirement. Please feel free to contact us if we can help you or you would like to find out more.
Staff Travel Expenses Q: I have only just completed my tax return for the 2011/12 tax year. As this return is late, what penalties and interest can I now expect?A: Your tax return is over 11 months late, so you will be charged all of the following late filing penalties: 100 fixed penalty 900 penalty - this is 10 each day from 1st
May to 29th July, when the maximum 90 day penalty is reached
300 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is the higher
Furthermore, if you have any outstanding tax for 2011/12, interest will be charged from the relevant due dates to the date you settle your account.

The new leaf clubDo not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.
-Alan Cohen, Author of Chicken Soup for the Soul
WHY Join: Wine oclock has become part of our culture. It is associated with fun and relaxation, but for some women, it can become a habit that is hard to control. Often, modern women are pulled in many directions and find themselves struggling to juggle work, children, the home and relationships. Wine can seem the quickest way to de-stress and unwind, but when used regularly or in increasing quantities, the negative implications can far outweigh the short-lived positive effects. Tiredness, hangovers and associated feelings of remorse and regret arent all that fun or relaxing.
WHAT we do: If you are a woman and worried about your alcohol consumption for any reason, then I might be able to help. Over a 6 week period, I provide daily support, tips, encouragement and guidance by email and phone (a meeting in person can be arranged too). I can help you to address an emotional habit that has got out of hand. With my support, you can press pause on an unhealthy reliance on alcohol, take some time away from wine oclock and experience the freedom of living and loving your life without alcohol. Over time, I hope to grow the club so that members can meet and socialise together if they wish to, enjoying fabulous nights out & meeting new friends, alcohol-free.
HOW to join: All I need from you is a positive commitment to change, total honesty, an open mind and a promise to live alcohol-free for the 6 weeks that you are in the club. The rewards can be huge. You will never be judged here and you can tell me what you hope to gain from the process at the start, so we work with that in mind. I am not a doctor or a counsellor*, but a guiding hand, a giver of support and advice. I understand how you feel and have chosen to live my life alcohol-free. You can rely on me for compassion and understanding. If you would like to find out more about how I can help, call me in complete confidence for an initial chat.

Whether youre a NY Resolution cynic, phobic or fanatic, chances are theres some aspect of your life youd like to improve. Lets look at how to increase your chances of success.
This year, instead of a doing NYR, look at resolutions around being. Because, from a place of being more courageous / disciplined / light-hearted / compassionate / loving / determined / grateful / confident / creative the doing part will come naturally. As youre not forcing it, it will be more inspiring, have a bigger impact in your life and more chance of lasting beyond February.
Choose one goal to start with - eg I want to be braver this year. Take ten things that come to mind when you think of being brave. Now choose one that you can really sink your teeth into; if you need to, break it down into small steps until you can find one that you know you will do. Do it ... then do the next one, and the next, remembering to acknowledge and celebrate your progress as you go along. Every few months, take a moment to track your progress. When you reach your goal, set a new one; you dont have to wait till next year!
Youre less likely to duck out when the going gets tough if you go public with your goal. If those around you might discourage, belittle or sabotage your plans, find someone who believes in you to support you. Its so much easier with some
encouragement along the way.Why do you want to make this change?
Whats important to you about that? Take time to listen to your heart: pay close attention to your thoughts and feelings surrounding the new behaviour. Then picture what your life will look and feel like when youve made it - and also the results of no change. When you really, really, really want to change something, youll be motivated to find a way.
The small print:Change takes time, practice & commitment be patient. Discomfort is a natural part of the change process;
accept it and dont let it put you off course.Change your routine and stay away from situations
where old habits might be triggered. If you slip up, be compassionate & start again. Create milestones along the way and celebrate and
reward yourself when you reach them.
Happy New Year,
SoniaPS As you can see, I
have a different take on goal setting and life changing. If you would like to get a feel for what else is possible for your life and career when working with me, lets have a chat and see what we can come up with together.
