Welcome to our June issue...Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world.

The biggest spectator polo day in the world is held at Guards Polo Club in the heart of the Royal Park at Windsor. From this year, this historic event will be sponsored by Audi, the leading luxury carmaker.

The 2012 BBC Proms has revealed details of the broad-ranging programme of events planned for its 118th season. Openingat the Royal Albert Hall on 13th July 2012, the festival promises two months of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts.

This July will see the much anticipated return of one of London’s must-see events of the festival season, Summer Series at Somerset House. Set in the spectacular courtyard of one of London’s most celebrated historic buildings, Summer Series at Somerset House is a wonderfully unique event in the summer’s live music calendar.

This gives you just a small taste of excitingevents & articles featured in this month’s issue...

LOCAL EVENTSLOCAL EVENTS

The first day of the festival, Friday 13th July, has a distinctly 80’s and classics

theme this year. Headed up by the legendary Jools Holland with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, featuring vocal talent from Fine Young Cannibals frontman, Roland Gift; the day also has performances from ABC, Heaven 17, The Straits, newly confirmed The Doors Alive (easily the finest Doors tribute band around!), The South, (performing classic hits such as “A Little Time”) and cult punk band Buzzcocks!

Saturday 14th July really is party day this year. A superb mix of fantastic acts all over the festival, topped by the amazing Olly Murs headlining the Main Stage! Tulisa, Jimmy Cliff, Cher Lloyd, Republica, Bjorn Again, Gary Numan, Tim Minchin, Bastille, The Beat, Skindred, Andy C, Brookes Brothers and many more will ensure that there really is something for everyone, and the festival is firing on all cylinders for what will definitely be one heck of party! It’s guaranteed to be a day of fun not to be missed!

On Sunday 15th July, the Main Stage plays host to some brilliant 70’s classics with a headline performance from the one and only Bryan Ferry, supported by disco legends CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers, Candi Staton and one of the real originators of rock and roll, Alvin Stardust! The Good Time Guide stage on the other hand has more of a 90’s theme, with headliners Ash supported by Dodgy and The Wonderstuff (acoustic).

Elsewhere on the site throughout the weekend you can also catch a truly eclectic line up of StooShe, The Undertones, The Wurzels, The Beat, Kids In Glass Houses, Young Guns, Sub Focus (DJ set), Black Spiders, Rubberbandits, Benga, Friction, Levi Roots, Sigma, The Skints, Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer and even the fattest Take That tribute act around, Take Fat! This is just a small snapshot of what is on offer however, for full details see the GuilFest official website – www.guilfest.co.uk

GuilFest is also home to arguably the best festival children’s area

in the UK – The Kidzone. The Kidzone is aimed solely at under 12’s and has a wealth of activities and entertainment on offer including children’s theatre, circus workshops, refreshments, amazingly talented performers, balloon makers, fun rides, face painting, costume making and much more besides. The weekend culminates in the annual themed parade around the festival on Sunday, where kids get a chance to show off what they’ve been making. As well as all of this you can expect VIP guest appearances from well known children’s icons Postman Pat on Saturday 14th July, and Zak and Panzee from The ZingZillas on Sunday 15th July.

Remember GuilFest is about so much more than just music! With an amazing comedy line up in the eFestivals Cosmic Comedy Lounge, featuring Jarred Christmas, Mitch Benn and Simon Evans amongst scores of others; the brilliant Man in the Moon Theatre tent, with its biggest line up to date of everything from Cabaret to Shakespeare - as well

as brilliant attractions such as The GuilFest Vintage Fayre, The Acoustic Lounge, La Discotheque, Farmer Giles Barndance, The Eden People’s GuilFest Gallery, and The Plantation Zone, and arts and craft exhibitions, food and drink from around the world, cocktail bars, real ale bars, boutique camping and a wonderfully relaxed family friendly vibe.

Don’t forget that right next door to the festival is Guildford Lido – Guildford’s 50 metre outdoor swimming pool. Many festival goers visit for a swim or a sunbathe and use the showers in the morning, heading back to the festival for when the bands start at midday!

Tickets prices range from £35 - £135, with Under 12’s going completely free (as long as they are accompanied by an adult) and reduced fares for Under 16’s. Tickets are available from www.guilfest.co.uk – make sure you get them quick though, organisers are happy to announce that this is one of the fastest selling years ever! Be sure not to miss out! www.guilfest.co.uk

The award winning family festival is celebrating its 21st anniversary on 13th-15th July 2012, and

with only a month to go until the event the wonderfully eclectic line up is nearing completion!

Weddings at Loseley Parkfor off-peak weddings during the week, says Michael, and now at least three in ten weddings take place during the autumn and winter months. This compares with none 10 years ago. Why?

The first reason is that people are looking for competitive rates at certain times of the year and for late availability, bearing in mind it can be five times less dear to marry on a Tuesday in February than a Saturday in May. Weekday weddings have certainly become more popular and school holidays and Easter are

or the first time Loseley is making The Great Hall

and the beautiful, award-winning Walled Garden exclusive to weddings on Fridays and Saturdays from May 2013.

The two areas will remain closed to the public through the high wedding season till the end of September.

Loseley, which has been voted a Top Ten UK Wedding Venue, is doing this to give total privacy to wedding parties. “We feel that it is only fair for couples and their

FEATURE

families to have the house and garden to themselves on such a special day,” says Michael More-Molyneux, owner of Loseley Park.

He is also introducing a new facility to wedding couples during the winter months, so that those who are just having their reception at Loseley will also be able to use the Great Hall in Loseley House for a drinks reception for an hour on arrival. Some restrictions apply like the number of children.

Meanwhile, the trend continues

particularly liked by teachers.Secondly, people are less traditional now than previously, and they love the roaring fires in the House and the prospect of some winter sun for their honeymoon.

Richard Constable is the great, great grandson of John Constable, RA. Richard’s future destiny was created at a very early age, influenced by the time spent with his grandparents and his aunt, all artists in their own right, who had inherited the Constable passion for the arts. Each family member had their own studio and practiced as artists

(painting). Inevitably the house pervaded the smell of paint, surrounded by many family paintings and the talk and chatter inevitably discussing art.

Born in 1932, Richard won an art scholarship to Marlborough College in 1945 where he became very interested in

microscopy which evoked a fascination with surrealism. He believes there is scarcely any shape or colour in nature that does not exist. Many of his works have an oriental flavour, an influence that was strengthened when he fought the

Korean War in 1951—52, serving in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and the Royal Artillery. Upon his return to England, he worked for a short time at the Natural History Museum, identifying most of the six hundred specimens he brought

back from Korea.

For nine years he was an art teacher before becoming a full time artist in 1967. Richard has had over 40 one man exhibitions in London, Bath, East Anglia, Eire, Singapore, West Germany, New York, Cincinnati and the Middle East. He

has also exhibited in the Spanish Biennale and the Maltese Biennale.

Asked if his famous ancestor would have approved of his more abstract works, Richard answers laughingly : “Constable adored his seven children and would certainly have forgiven me”.

The biggest spectator polo day in the world is held atGuards Polo Club in the heart of the Royal Park atWindsor. From this year, this historic event will besponsored by Audi, the leading luxury carmaker.is company is no stranger to polo though, as ithas been the sponsor of the England polo team for

several years. is makes it the perfect partner for the leadingshowcase event for the England Polo Team – the Coronation Cupon the Audi International Polo Day.

Last year, the sport’s governing body, the Hurlingham PoloAssociation, in conjunction with Guards Polo Club, celebrated thecentenary of the Coronation Cup, which has been played at thismost famous of polo clubs for 40 of those past 100 years. Eventoday, the Coronation Cup is viewed by English polo players, andindeed some of the most famous international names in the sport, as

the most coveted event to play for during the English polo season.e England team manager Andrew Hine, who has also

captained the England team on this day many times too, believesInternational Day has a flavour that cannot be matched anywhereelse in the world. “You can play in the Argentine Open in Palermo,Buenos Aires, which for many is the Mecca of the sport, with thenoise and 5,000 people on top of you; but when you play at GuardsPolo Club in e Coronation Cup, and you hear the roar of some25,000 people, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. Noevent can claim those sorts of numbers, and when you get a great, close match, and the crowd in those stands gets behind you, thehairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is the biggest game in theworld. We love that as players. ere’s no greater feeling.”

e England team has dominated the Coronation Cup in thepast couple of years, defeating both New Zealand and Brazil on the

Club’s most famous of grounds – e Queen’s Ground. is year theteam, led by the talented Luke Tomlinson, will be hoping to retainits clean sheet against a talented team from South Africa. is willbe the third time that these two countries have met in thiscompetition and the tally currently stands at 2-0 to the home side.So no pressure for Luke and his team-mates then! But win or lose,Luke, who has worn the skipper’s armband since 2006 knows it willbe a match to remember. “It’s always a great occasion to be involvedin,” he says. “To play for your country, and to be captain, is a highhonour in any sport. It’s always a great feeling to go out there andplay in front of a huge home crowd. As players, it means so much to us.”

e support of Audi at this International Polo at Guards PoloClub on Sunday 22 July not only guarantees to give the best Englishplayers the opportunity to shine on this most famous of days, but isalso enabling the governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Associationand Audi to create a platform of international events at other clubsaround the country too. Audi has created an International TestMatch Series – with England games at Cowdray Park in Sussex,Beaufort in Gloucestershire and, for the first time at CheshireRacecourse too. is not only says much about the depth of talentand interest in the sport in the UK today, but also highlight’s Audi’scommitment to the oldest team sport in the world.

e Audi International Day naturally becomes a late summerhighlight of the British sporting calendar. However, to ensure that itdoes not clash with that other great sporting occasion in 2012, theLondon Olympics, the polo will be staged a week earlier than usual– on Sunday 22 July. Despite this date change, it remains framedaround those other great sporting and social events - Henley,Wimbledon, Ascot and the Lord’s Test match and continues tooffer two outstanding polo games – the Coronation Cup in theafternoon and a morning game – showcasing up-and-comingEnglish talent. Of course this year, in honour of Her Majesty eQueen, the winners of the morning game, Young England v eCommonwealth, will receive a new cup this year – the DiamondJubilee Trophy. Her Majesty, of course, is a huge supporter of thesport, having watched her husband and eldest son play and now twoof her grandsons, HRH e Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry.

Although there is a new name associated with this event, somethings remain very much the same. Pomp, pageantry and elegancewill be very much the order of the day, with plenty of opportunitiesfor visitors to Guards Polo Club to enjoy some of the finesthospitality available at any sporting event. is may be courtesy ofPink Food in the Guards Members’ Marquee, with its deliciouslunch and afternoon tea menu or seated within Keith’s Prowse’sChukkas marquee. Here guests have the perfect environment fromwhich to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing day of polo, including awonderful Best of British menu in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. Meanwhile Chinawhite will be celebrating its 11th year at theInternational Polo. With hospitality options for both day andevening – or even a combination of the two, this fantastic, dramaticmarquee can offer something for everyone. With leading DJ CalvinHarris headlining the decks in the evening, the marquee willbecome the polo party of the year – if not the decade.e Audi International Day has all the ingredients to create a poloday to remember. So whether you have an Audi invitation to itselegant lunch in the Clubhouse or planning a more informal affairwith friends and family at the Club, there are plenty ofopportunities to create your own lasting memories. e competition is being sponsored by a range of companies, including Asahi, Sunseeker, Pommery Champagne and AmikaLondon, and even us here at Sandbanks Life; who are set to sponsorthe Scottish boys.

Captain of Scotland, Jamie le Hardy said of the event:“It’s a very social weekend and it’s a lot of fun – there’s a real buzz! It’s a great spectacle. You’re right next to the action so it’s a great wayof showing polo to the public.”

Jamie Le Hardy is widely considered to be one of the best Britishplayers the game has seen over the last decade and has beendecorated with a host of prestigious awards. Born in Dorset, into anArmy family, whose parents travelled extensively throughout Jamie’searly years, his first recollection of polo was watching his father playin Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, Jamie became involved inpony club polo where his passion for the sport started to flourishand his talent clearly showed.

He began his career fresh out of school; within three years hehad won ‘Young Player of the Year’ award and the British OpenGold Cup:

“ose two events really launched my career and since then I’vebeen one of the highest rated players in England... I’m half Scottish, half English; my Mum’s Scottish. I played for England a lot in mycareer and now I’ve taken up the Scottish mantel and am captainingthe team.”

His other accolades include numerous ‘Most Valuable Player’awards; he was the first England captain to beat Argentina sinceWorld War II and he has won the Golden Jubilee Trophy withPrince Harry.

As well as being a world-class talent on the pitch, le Hardy isalso a professional A Grade Umpire, and an HPA qualified coach;he owns and runs the le Hardy Polo Academy (based in Surrey)which caters for all ages and abilities:

“I spend quite a bit of time coaching, developing horses and

putting a bit back into the sport... If you want to get into polo, havea look at our website and speak to me.” www.lehardypolo.com

World renowned English polo-player Jack Kidd is also one ofthe fantastic sportsman playing during the tournament.

Among his numerous achievements which include tournamentvictories around the world, Kidd has achieved two European goldmedals in the Federation of International Polo Championships ongrass and an Arena Gold Cup win in 2006. In addition to hissuccess as an outdoor player on grass, Kidd is also perhaps one of thebest known players on the Snowpolo circuit; claiming victory atnumerous tournaments, perhaps most notably Cartier in St Morita. He is also a pivotal promoter in the recent launch of the BerenbergSnowpolo tournament in January.

Influenced by his father who show-jumped for Great Britain atthe Olympics and played polo for England, Kidd’s love of the gamebegan at the tender age of 14,

“By the time I was 17 I was a professional and twenty years laterI’m still a pro”, he said.

A truly passionate player, Kidd said of the game:“It’s completely addictive; the most amazing sport you could everplay; to gallop on horses and score goals... its a great, great sport!”

I spoke to Kidd, who having spent the last five consecutive dayson the pitch, was cooling down and getting some well earnedrespite. For a man who plays polo consistently throughout the year, his praise of the British Beach Polo Championships was illustrativeof the fabulous weekend spectators can expect,

“It’s one of the best weekends of the English polo season. I lookforward to it immensely and I look forward to playing against all theother countries”

Spectators can expect some exciting games, watching theseworld-class talents stretched to their best, as the sand surface doesfor a fast paced and technically demanding game:

“Sand is probably the most difficult surface to play on out ofthem all; snow or grass. You have to be very skilled with the horseand very good at hitting the ball in the air.”

When I asked him what visitors to the championships canexpect, Kidd simply said,

“Big parties and big polo matches. It should be a stonker!”

LOCAL EVENTS

4 4 J U N E 2 0 1 2

With its 160 year history, it is undoubtedly the best known regatta in the world and it holds a unique place in the respect and affection of all oarsmen – both active and retired. Founded in 1839, it is famous both as a great sporting occasion and as a social event. People come from all over the world to attend, either as competitors or as spectators.

Winning an event at Henley has always been considered one of the greatest achievements of a rower’s career, even amongst those who have become world champions; and a rowing life is not complete if it does not include competing at Henley.

Unlike multi-lane international regattas, Henley still operates a knock-out draw with only two boats racing in each heat. This entails the

organisation of up to 90 raceson some of the five days. The length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards. It takes approximately seven minutes to cover, so there are often two races at once on the Course for much of the day. The number of races is, of course, reduced on each successive day, leaving only the Finals to be rowed on the last day.

The first rounds of the Thames, Temple, Princess Elizabeth, Wyfold, Britannia, Prince Albert and Fawley Challenge Cups will begin racing on Wednesday 27th June 2012. The racing timetable for the Wednesday will be posted on the Regatta website on the afternoon of Sunday 24th June. The first rounds of all other events will begin racing on Thursday 28th or Friday 29th June. There are 20 events in total: 6 classes

of race for Eights, 5 for Fours (3 coxless and 2 coxed), 5 for Quadruple Sculls, and races for Coxless Pairs and Double Sculls. In addition there are single sculling races for both men and women. A record number of 133 overseas crews have entered this year’s event, easily breaking the previous record of 126 overseas crews set in the 150th Anniversary year back in 1989. Twenty one overseas nations are represented, the second highest number ever. There are 499 crews entered in total.

THE STEWARDS’ ENCLOSURE

Only open to members and their guests. There are now 6,500 Members and the waiting list is nearly 1,000 – this means that it could take up to 10 years before an applicant is

likely to be elected to membership. Please contact Henley Royal Regatta for a membership application form or for further information on the application process. Those attending the Regatta in the Stewards’ Enclosure must dress in accordance with long-established tradition. Gentlemen are required to wear lounge suits, or jackets or blazers with flannels, and a tie or cravat. Ladies are required to wear dresses or skirts with a hemline below the knee and will not be admitted wearing divided skirts, culottes or trousers of any kind. Similarly, no one will be admitted to the Stewards’ Enclosure wearing shorts or jeans. Whilst not a requirement, it is customary for ladies to wear hats.

Members are particularly asked to bring the dress code to the

attention of their Guests, to ensure that the standards are maintained and to avoid the possibility of embarrassment of a Guest being refused admission. Children under ten years of age are not admitted.

THE REGATTA ENCLOSURE

This situated just downstream from the Stewards’ Enclosure and is open to the general public, competitors and supporters. The atmosphere is less formal than the Stewards’ Enclosure as there is no dress code, although many who attend do enter into the spirit of the Regatta, wearing club blazers and other rowing apparel. Children of all ages are welcome and admission is free to under 14s when accompanied by an adult who has purchased a Regatta Enclosure badge. To view the racing, the Regatta

Enclosure offers seating alongside the river and in an open grandstand. There is also an excellent covered restaurant, an outside dining area and a bar.

Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon.

In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship.

The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final.

The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date.

However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description.

By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since.

ENTER THE LADIESIn 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883.

OVERSEAS CHAMPIONSBy the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade.

WARTIME WIMBLEDONDuring the Second World War the Club managed to remain open despite a severe curtailment of staff. The premises were used for a variety of civil defence and military functions such as fire and ambulance services, Home Guard and a decontamination unit. Troops stationed within the vicinity were allowed to use the main concourse for drilling. Another familiar sight around the ground was a small farmyard consisting of pigs, hens, geese, rabbits, etc. In October 1940 a ‘stick’ of five 500lb bombs struck Centre Court, resulting in the loss of 1,200 seats.

With the war in Europe over, signs of normality began to return to Wimbledon during June and July 1945, when a series of matches between Allied servicemen took place on the old No. 1 Court, which had escaped enemy action. Early in 1946 the decision was taken to resume The Championships that summer.

In more recent years long-standing records have been broken. In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles.

Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years the momentum has increased and major works programmes have provided improved facilities for the players, spectators, officials and media.

WIMBLEDON 2012Wimbledon 2012 will see the finest players from over 60 countries compete in the five main Championships events. In the second week

Page 51: Weybridge Life Magazine June 2012

of the Tournament, these players will be joined by Juniors, Veteran and Wheelchair competitors, playing in their own events on the Championships’ lawns. The All England Club, Wimbledon has announced that the total prize money at this year’s 126th Championships, will be £16.1million, an increase of 10% on 2011.

Grounds open at 10:30am each day. On Courts No.2–19, play is provisionally scheduled to start at 11:30am for main draw matches on at least the first eight days and at 11:00am for the Junior matches on the middle Saturday and during the second week. Centre Court play scheduled to start at 1pm, except the last two days when 2pm. No.1 Court play scheduled to start at 1pm for all 13 days.

CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF PLAY The Club tries to play all matches on the courts and days published. However, occasionally it is necessary to switch a match from one court to another. This can be for a number of reasons. Some players remain involved in several events towards the end of The Championships and it may be necessary to move a match to avoid a clash. The Club tries to give similar rest periods between matches for players due to play each other.

The majority of tickets for The Championships are allocated through the Public Ballot. Applications for the 2012 Ballot are now closed.

The Ticket Office is open for all ticketing queries, normal opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm (excl. Bank Holidays). Tel: 020 8971 2473. Please Note: The Ticket Office is available for all ticket and ballot enquiries but is NOT a Box Office.

Approximately 500 tickets are reserved daily at the turnstiles for Days 1 to 9 for both Centre Court and No.2 Court and approximately 500 tickets are available for all 13 Days for No.1 Court. Several thousand Ground Admission tickets are available each day. This number will vary depending on the number of people already in the grounds, the number of courts in play and the weather.

For more information about queueing, pleasevisit www.wimbledon.com/championships/tickets/queueingSeveral hundred Centre Court and No.3 Court will be sold online on the day before play via the Ticketmaster website.

CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2012 HIGHLIGHTS

London In Full Bloom! The Chelsea Flower show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world, put on each year by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. It is the garden design equivalent of a catwalk at a fashion show.

The flower show sold out in record time this year, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming.A patriotic flavour dominated this year’s Show with Union Flags, topiary corgis and nostalgic touches in many displays.

Year on year, garden designers at the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint.

THE TALKING POINTS THIS YEAR...The show gardens always dominate the media headlines, though it is often noted it is the

Great Pavilion that represents true Chelsea. The skill of

nurseries exhibit to such a high

standard, with such attention to detail irrespective of the respective natural

flowering seasons.

Diarmuid Gavin set the tongues wagging

again with his giant pyramid -

the Westland Magical Garden won the award for most creative show garden and certainly looked the part on Press Day with Chelsea pensioners forming a guard of honour ringing each of the pyramid’s seven terraces.

Celebrities were spotted at the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show decorating miniature plant pots to help raise funds for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. Pot Art were auctioned online so that more school children have access to gardening.

The brooch was specially designed and inspired by Iris ungicularis, the flower chosen by the RHS to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

To welcome HM The Queen when she visited the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012, the RHS commissioned a large floral bedding scheme designed by the Parish of St Helier, Jersey. The scheme was a three dimensional tiered design created from a mixture of summer flowering and foliage plants. The centrepiece was a rotating Jersey Accession Issue Postal stamp.

She also saw three floral corgis on the St Helier Jersey garden, made by Anna Brook at iapetus gallery, and the RHS has added two new Royal Autographs to its collection, one signed jointly by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, and one signed by The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Celebrities visiting the show

Pots by Alan Titchmarsh and Rachel de Thame, presenters of the BBC Chelsea Flower Show programmes, were added to the online eBay auction, and within a few hours had reached over £200 each.

Ricky Gervais, Antonio Carlucci, Rob Brydon, Lorraine Pascale and Esther Rantzen to name a few, joined the Pot Art line up at the RHS show. Joan Collins, Julian Fellowes and Miranda Richardson also stopped by to see their pots showcased alongside other participants, including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Paul Smith, Pixie Lott and Fearne Cotton. The plants pots are being auctioned online to raise money for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, which helps more than half of all British schools to get pupils growing.

Ricky Gervais said: “Everyone should do something creative and I can’t think of anything better than appreciating the beauty of nature. That is why I support a campaign that encourages kids to get involved in gardening.”

The RHS Campaign for School Gardening supports over half of all schools in the UK, engaging

Encircling the Long Water and with the magnificent palace in the background, the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show offers an idyllic setting for a day of home-grown fun. This year’s show will boast new features as well as enough ideas, plants and gardening products to tempt gardeners of all ages.

RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will host displays of floral design, as well as marquees filled with roses and rare plants. Restaurants, cafés and picnic areas offer the chance to relax in truly magnificent surroundings. The hundreds of trade stands provide products and accessories for every gardener, from secateurs and planters to barbecues and gazebos.

THIS YEAR’S HIGHLIGHTS...

RHS/GROUNDWORK FEATURE: URBAN OASISThe RHS is linking with Groundwork to highlight the benefits of the urban greening work undertaken by both charities. With Chris Beardshaw on board as designer, a large area will be transformed into an urban setting highlighting the projects Groundwork are working on across the country. This exciting feature will link in with the down-to-earth feel of the adjacent Grow Your Own and Artisan Food Marquees. WORLD OF GARDENS A new feature of the show, World of Gardens, will represent different countries and regions of the world from Switzerland to Russia, to the

Azores and Jordon. Visitors will be inspired by a variety of garden styles, bringing a taste of the exotic to our very English setting.

LOW COST, HIGH IMPACT GARDENSA new competition launched this year in conjunction with Association of Professional Landscapers will illustrate a diverse range of gardens achieved within certain budgets. Landscapers were invited to submit gardens costing £7k, £10k and £13k; one at each price bracket (two at £13k) has been chosen. Gardens will be between 30 and 50sqm and will be judged for RHS medals and a best-in-category award. Visitors will have the chance to see amazing spaces designed especially for relaxing, socialising and entertaining.

HAMPTON GRAPEVINEDavid Domoney is back with an exciting feature to the south of the Long Water. This year the format will be a gardening and lifestyle “chat show” which visitors will be able to watch live within the marquee theatre. It will include discussion on gardening-related products and style, plus an exciting live link to a roaming presenter who will be out and about, talking to designers, exhibitors and “bringing the outdoors inside”.

CONCEPTUAL GARDENS, SHOW GARDENS AND SUMMER GARDENSUsing garden design as a medium of communication, these gardens will inspire, inform and enchant. Visitors will have the chance to experience a Victorian fantasy garden with Bournemouth Borough City Council, admire

BRITAIN’S RICHESTARE GETTING RICHER

BRITAIN’S RICH ARE GETTING RICHER, AND STEEL TYCOON LAKSHMI MITTAL IS STILL THE RICHEST OF THEM ALL, ACCORDING TO THE SUNDAY TIMES RICH LIST.

The Indian-born billionaire topped the list for the seventh successive year with an estimated fortune of £12.7bn, despite also suffering the biggest fall in wealth of any of the 1,000 men and women named.

Mr Mittal and his family were worth 4.8bn less than last year, leaving them only just ahead of Uzbek metals magnate and Arsenal shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, with £12.3bn. Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich came in third with £9.5bn, down £800m on last year.

The wealthiest Briton is the Duke of Westminster, in seventh place with an estimated £7.35bn, thanks to his central London property empire.

The combined wealth of Britain’s 1,000 richest men and women reached a record high of more than £414bn.

Rich List compiler Philip Beresford told us: “Obviously it’s very difficult in this age of austerity when the government puts out the mantra ‘we’re all in this together’ and the rich seem to be getting richer and richer.”However, I wouldn’t criticize the rich because a lot of those on this rich list are based here, they’re investing in companies here, and if they get richer hopefully the rest of us will get a bit more prosperous on the rising tide of wealth.”

The Hinduja Brothers, Srichand, 76, and Gopichand, 72, returned to prominence this year, rising five places to claim the fourth spot, with an estimated fortune of £8.6bn, up an impressive £2.6bn on last year.

2012 saw a record eight lottery millionaires joining the list, led by Europe’s biggest lottery winners Colin and Chris Weir at number 462, with £160m. They donated £1m to the Scottish National Party, making them the country’s top political donors, ahead of Peter Cruddas, Sir Anthony Bamford and Lord Sainsbury.

“This year we’ve got a record 77 billionaires, a lot of them foreign-born billionaires, based in London who like London as the centre of their particular universe,” Mr Beresford said. “ But the best examples of people who are getting prosperous and rich on the back of their own endeavours are Britons like a guy called Michael Oliver (number 243), who is in his 70s and yet runs the biggest valve-making company in Europe. He’s making enormous sums of profits and they’re generating more jobs and more tax revenue and it’s exactly what we need.”

London and the southeast still dominate the list with 53% of entries, but there are now 74 Scottish entries (up from 70 last

year), and 24 Welsh (the same as last year). The list’s compilers admit it is a “broad brush estimate”, based on public accounts, market intelligence, and in some cases the individuals themselves.

And those behind the list report more than a slight air of one-upmanship amongst our wealthiest citizens. Mr Beresford related the story of one man who phoned his friend, also on the list to say: ‘Hello, number 21 here, am I talking to number 36?’

PAWN STARSPrestige Pawnbrokers based in the heart of affluent Weybridge, Surrey has been enjoying a recent rush of media attention. Due to the ever increasing popularity of his business, Managing Director, James Constantinou has been inundated with requests for press interviews.

‘I have seen this business grow massively over the last few years. At first I think people were slightly wary and had a very old fashioned misconception about it, mostly based on old myths about the pawn broking business and did see it as a last resort. However, most of my business is from well-connected clients whose money is tied up in their assets and who are now coming to me first’ explains James.

Asked why James thinks that these wealthy people would make a pawn brokers their first stop, his explanation is simple. ‘Often these are people who’ve perhaps taken some risks in the past to accumulate their wealth and because of the recent recession, their credit rating has been affected - or, sometimes they are in between lucrative deals. They can come to me and rest assured that I will not be relying on a credit search or their employment status – I base my loan on the value of their assets – it’s that simple’ smiles James.

The pawn broking business works on a very simple structure. Basically, James and his team will offer up to 70% of the items value. The loan will then need to be paid back by the end of a 7 month term with interest added but can be paid back at any time during the loan term. You don’t need to make any monthly payments at all. If for any reason

FEATURE

6 6 J U N E 2 0 1 2

DID YOU KNOW?

Pawn broking is an age old profession and dates back to Ancient Greece The word pawn is derived from the Latin pignus which means ‘for pledge’. Prestige were inundated with designer handbags after the exposure in the Daily Mail –some of them were fakes which were instantly spotted by the experts! James was recently offered Hitler’s blood stained arm band – James declined! The universal symbol of pawn broking is three gold balls, dating back to the Medici family in Italy who were money lenders. Legend has it that one of the Medici family fought a giant and slew him with three sacks of rocks. The three balls or globes became part of their family crest at a later date, and ultimately, the sign of pawn broking.

you are unable to pay back the loan in full, James will ask for the interest only for the loan period and simply extend the loan for another 7 month term.

‘I have recently had a lot of interest from women with vintage or designer jewellery and goods in extremely good condition. They have whizzed in here with a vintage piece of jewellery and left with cash in their hand. This has given them a chance to breath, pay their bills and then reclaim their item when they’ve sorted their finances out’ explains James.

So, with a recent interview in the Daily Mail and an appearance on BBC World News and MBC, does James think this is a fad or a short term influx of business? ‘Absolutely not! Pawn broking has been around for a very long time. We are going from strength to strength and currently getting interest from clients with cellars of wine, fine art, stamps, coins, antiques, jewellery, watches and most recently we’ve managed loans against vehicles and classic cars’ says James.

So, next time you are in need of a short term cash solution, don’t despair if the banks say no or your credit history means you’ll find it hard to get a loan, Prestige Pawnbrokers treat everyone with the same policy – your

loan is granted on the value of the item – not your personal history.

s West Byfleet is busy preparing for playing its major role in the forthcoming

events, Brooklands Jewellers are putting out the flags again - not only to cheer the cyclists on as they speed past the shop but also to celebrate their first year of business.

They certainly seem to have a winning formula. The three Hatton Garden craftsmen have the skill and equipment to manufacture any item of jewellery. They can make anything to your own specific designs and requirements, redesign old jewellery in a more contemporary style or even alter modern jewellery to a more classic style. All the work is done on the premises and it is amazing to be able to discuss the details with the actual jeweller

and not a percentage of the total which can lead to inflated valuations. Reassuringly, any jewellery left for valuation does not leave the premises.

All in all, the shop has a contemporary, bright and airy feel to it with a very friendly ambience.

Do pay them a visit. It is interesting just to have a look and if you take along your scrap gold as well, you will be pleasantly surprised.

You are certainly assured of a warm welcome from Dave, Stewart and Dave.

and even to see the job at the different stages of its manufacture.

As well as this valuable asset, they have a comprehensive and eclectic range of ready made jewellery in stock. This includes some fabulous diamond rings, necklaces and bracelets , most of which have been made in the workshop and are therefore unique. It extends to Nicole Barr silver jewellery and the fashionable candy bling range. There is a very good selection of pearls and they also have the full range of Royal Selangor giftware, solving the problem of christening presents and the like.

Repairing jewellery to the highest standard is another forte. They have a quick turnaround

and prices are competitive.

Because of the direct link with Hatton Garden, Brooklands Jewellers can pay the best prices for your scrap gold, silver and platinum. Prices are still high so it really is worth clearing out those old jewellery boxes, drawers and cupboards.

They also buy and sell quality watches. Watch repairs are undertaken and watch batteries can usually be fitted while you wait.

Insurance companies are becoming increasingly demanding so the Valuation Service offered is done by a registered valuer and is indisputable. It is refreshing that the fees for this are on a fixed scale

MAKE A SPLASH WITH YOUR

S hopping for swimwear is enough to bring a woman really out in a sweat. But there’s such a great range of styles, colours and flattering cover-ups available that everyone can look

hot on the beach, no matter what their shape or size.

If you’re very slIm:If you have no waist and shoulders the same width as your hips, you can get away with pretty much anything bikini-wise, but make sure you go for one that makes you look feminine.

Triangle bikinis look great on slim women, as do bikinis that fasten around the back of the neck (they flatter shoulders and rectangular shapes).

Plus, tie bottoms look great on svelte legs. If you prefer a one-piece, go for one with geometric motifs to highlight your waist and give you shape.

Choosing a simple style in an attention-grabbing colour is a good way to stand out from the crowd.

If you’re full-fIgured:And no waist, go for a one-piece swimsuit in a matte colour to highlight your décolleté. One-pieces camouflage little sins like tummies and flab. Balcony shapes are glam and sexy. If you go for a two-piece, avoid bikini shorts or high-cut bottoms which will weigh down your figure.Whether you’re slim or full-figured, avoid: Square décolletés and horizontal stripes, which can make you look bigger than you are.

If you’ve got a boyIsh, trIangular shape:If you have large shoulder and slim hips, balance out your figure and make it more feminine in high-waisted short bikinis that lengthen your legs (these are also great at hiding any hint of a tummy!). They widen your hips and make you look more in proportion.

If you have a small chest, try push-up plunge bras to give you a bit of oomph. One-piece costumes suit

you well, especially V-neck ones which widen your figure in the right places. Think Bond Girl!Avoid: Plain, shapeless ‘swimming’ costumes that make your figure look boyish.Low waists which highlight slim hips and wide shoulders.

If you’re pear-shaped:If you have big hips and slim shoulders, definately go for a bikini. Weigh out your bottom half with a balcony top that draws attention to your chest. Triangle tops tied behind the neck show off good shoulders, while low-waisted bottoms with little ties balance out your shape well. One-piece swimsuits highlight your waist, but they make your legs look shorter - or even heavier - than they really are.Avoid: High waists. They don’t flatter heavy hips and thighs.

If you have well-proportIoned curves:If your shoulders and hips are the same width and you have a slim waist, you’re lucky enough to be able to wear pretty much any kind of swimwear. Take care with one-piece costumes, though. They have to fit perfectly: if they don’t hug your curves in the right places they flatten your shape and make you look heavier than you are. If you have little love handles, avoid tight strings that make you look like you’re squeezed into your bikini.Avoid: Bandeau tops if you’re big-busted. They only flatten out your assets!

Accessorise with simple jewellery and classic sunnies for a shortcut to A-List style!

Unless semolina is your desired dish of the day, best learn to look after your teeth. Good dental hygiene is the only reliable method to be sure that you can bite into a crisp carrot or a good steak when you want to for the rest of your life.

All good dentists go on and on about looking after your teeth and gums. They make money from providing dental treatment yet they still prefer you to make sure you don’t need them because you’ve fulfilled your part of the deal: you are responsible for your own dental hygiene.

Good dental health covers all aspects of your mouth, especially the teeth and gums. So you can eat, speak, laugh and look nice, your teeth and gums need to be cared for by you and your dentist and hygienist. The alternative is tooth decay, fillings, bleeding gums, tooth loss and possibly bad breath. It’s not a pretty picture, is it?

The health of your mouth is linked to that of your overall health. The ability to chew and swallow food is essential for obtaining the nutrition we need for our wellbeing. But eating and drinking the wrong food can be part of the problem.

For many years the message to prevent tooth decay was to avoid sugar and sugary food and drinks. However, as well as sweets and fizzy pop, pasta, rice, potato crisps, some fruits and even bread can promote acid formation in plaque. This is why you must rinse your mouth, or preferably brush your teeth, after meals. The characteristics of a food, especially how strongly it clings to teeth, influences how quickly tooth decay starts. For example crisps and biscuits stick to teeth for longer periods than many sweets because soluble sugars as used in some sweets are washed away more quickly by saliva. Dried fruit, although great for digestive health, sticks to the teeth like glue.

Dental decay, the most common disorder affecting the teeth, is caused by bacteria which form a sticky film or pellicle - dental plaque - on the surfaces of the tooth. The billions of bacteria in the plaque use carbohydrates from food and drink and produce acids which actually dissolve the minerals of the tooth and, before you know it, there is a hole and you need a filling.

Tooth decay is not inevitable and is preventable. One of the best weapons you have is always with you: saliva - it clears food debris from your mouth, neutralises the acids produced from plaque bacteria and provides calcium and phosphate to the teeth in a smart process called remineralisation. This takes forty minutes from the last ingestion of food.

Many dentists recommend rinsing with fresh water after eating, though brushing after meals is better if you can. And by the way: daily flossing is a non-negotiable component of good dental hygiene. There are some great new gadgets to help with the daily floss – look out for small and brightly coloured interdental brushes at your dentist or local pharmacy. Kids will love using these. All the dentists and hygienists at the White Dental Company will be pleased to advise.

Regular dental check-ups and visits to the practice hygienist will help detect, monitor and reduce potential problems. The hygienist’s job is to remove plaque and this will help to lessen the incidence of dental decay. If very little plaque is present, the amount of acid formed is insignificant and the likelihood of decay is significantly reduced.

If your teeth are in trouble, fear not as all is not lost. Far from it.

A good professional practice, and The White Dental Company is just such a place, can help you with all your dental requirements. For patients who require replacement teeth, dental implants can be fitted in one day and there is a variety of techniques to minimise any discomfort and to ensure you are comfortable during and after the procedure.

If your problem is a smile that is less than brilliant, or you are not happy with the state of your teeth and gums, using minimally invasive techniques the White Dental team will give a you smile that you will be proud of - and teeth that will last you a lifetime!

Ideally you should visit the hygienist and have a check-up every six months. Discuss a regular plan with your dentist and once it is in place, put it in your diary in pen and stick to it.

Unless, of course, you like semolina…

You’ll need good teethto eat good

DR. ARIEL HAUS

Dr Ariel Haus is an expert using Carboxytherapy and has used this procedure in his Brazilian

clinic for over 10 years. In the UK Dr Haus has just unveiled treatments using Carboxytherapy specifically targeting Stretch Marks. Dr Haus’ Harley Street clinic already offers Carboxytherapy treatments combating dark under eye bags and these have proved very popular.

Carboxytherapy involves the injection of a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin’s surface and it delivers results by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Carbon dioxide is produced by the body naturally, and should not be confused with the potentially fatal carbon monoxide. Carboxytherapy is a popular choice for the treatment of stretch marks on the stomach and legs. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight gain (e.g. pregnancy or rapid gain of fat). Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with pregnancy.

A minimally-invasive treatment that is virtually painless, it can be done in around 5 minutes. Following treatment the skin texture will improve. Between 6-12 Carboxytherapy treatments are usually required for stretch marks, all spaced one week apart. This is a treatment that is suitable for all skin types and involves no downtime following the treatment.

Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area.

Another great summer bikini season solution is VelaShape. VelaShape II combines gentle light and radio frequency energies (elōs™) with mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to manipulate the

superficial fat tissue layer that contributes to cellulite. The heat from the light and RF energies increases metabolism of this fatty layer and shrinks the size of fat cells. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction act on the blood vessels to increase circulation to the local area,

as well as massaging the skin to achieve a smoother, less dimpled surface appearance.

elaShape II offers a gradual improvement of cellulite in treated areas, firmer and tighter skin surfaces are also reported. 4-6 sessions are initially recommended over the space of just over a week. Maintenance treatments are done once a month. Treatment is safe and effective.

Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The specific non-invasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: • Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin• Treatments to address wrinkles and frown lines • Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines• Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser • Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction.

In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro.

Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States.

Has Solutions To Restore Your Body This Summer

Dr Haus has regular columns in UK magazines and is often consulted by manufacturers of leading skin products and brands to offer insight and his opinion owing to his extensive experience.

‘Super’ foodS are not juSt to be eaten; they can make you beautiful too! by levanah reyeS-WainWright

‘S uper’ foods have long been associated with fighting free radical damage due to their high levels of antioxidants. We’ve been eating them by the bucket load in order to

reap their anti-ageing benefits, and now beauty companies have harnessed theses ‘super’ foods to put in our skincare. CoConut and PlumsCoconut contains a group of nutrients called cytokinins, which many scientists think can play a role in human health – slowing ageing and lowering the risk of cancer. A great source of nourishment for the body and the skin, it wasn’t going to be long before someone decided to add it to skincare and who better than world-renowned dermatologist to the stars Dr Perricone. His Get Super (getsuper.co.uk) range combines the power of science with the forces of nature. The Hyper Hydrator Daily Moisturiser (£29.50, Boots) with coconut water is a source of revitalising minerals and nutrients that quench thirsty skin, whilst reducing redness and relieving dryness. Encouraging our teenagers to start protecting their skin from environmental and lifestyle damage is becoming easier thanks to Elemis. New to their FreshSkin

range is Super Boost Moisturising Serum (£18, SuperDrug, timetospa.co.uk) containing virgin prunus oil extracted from plums. Plums are a great anti-inflammatory fruit and contain powerful antioxidants, and this aromatic oil is rich in vitamin E. This lightly textured serum is ideal for when skin looks dull and lifeless and needs a hydrating boost, as well as protecting the skin from potential damage caused by exposure to UV light.

aPPlesWhile all apples are good for you, Granny Smith and the Red Delicious in particular contain abundant amounts of collagen and elastin for healthy hair and skin. SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF Gel (£150 for 30ml, skinceuticals.co.uk) has caused a stir in the beauty industry for its new serum-in-a-gel technology, with SkinCeuticals revolutionising the texture of topical antioxidants. Phloretin is in the green skin of apples that stops them from turning brown, and this wonder product will effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles, even skin tone and brighten the complexion. This superfood staple is also known for its beneficial effect on troublesome and sensitive skin. Apple Pectin contained in Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist (£46 for 100ml,

lyChee and QuinoaLychees originated in China over 2,000 years ago and were reserved for the Emperor. The fruit was considered the most refined in the Celestial Empire and it contains high levels of vitamin C and the skin-boosting mineral potassium. Bourjois have created a super-formula with this ‘super-fruit’ with their popular Healthy Mix Serum (£10.99, Boots). This gel formula foundation available in 6 shades, also contains other super ingredients including pomegranate and goji to erase signs of fatigue, even out the complexion and revive radiance. Considered sacred by the ancient Incas, Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a nutritional wonder packed with nourishing vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids to combat free radicals and boost moisture levels. Cowshed Quinoa Hydrating Daily Moisturiser (£32,50ml,cowshedonline.com) is perfect for combination skin types. This lightly textured cream hydrates, softens and smoothes the skin.

almonds and aCaiExceptionally nutritious, high in flavonoids and great at eliminating toxins, Almonds are known to improve the complexion. Restore dehydrated skin with Dr.Hauschka Almond

Body Moisturiser (£22.95, drhauschka.co.uk). Ideal for sensitive skin, this body moisturiser is infused with almond oil and marsh mallow extracts to leave skin silky-soft. Acai Berry is considered the world’s most powerful superfood and delivers optimal levels of antioxidants to the skin. Jergens® Naturals® Daily Moisturising Body Moisturiser (£4.99, Tesco) is full of nutrient rich acai and fortified with 97% natural ingredients, to promote skin health and stimulate cell turnover for a visible improvement in moisture levels.

GraPes and tomatoesOrganic Grape Water, like thermal spa water, contains trace elements of minerals, antioxidant vitamin C and rich polysaccharides (sugars) which reduce skin hyper-sensitivity and possesses ultra moisturising properties. Ultra concentrated with this magical ingredient, Caudalie’s S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum (£29, caudalie.com) is brilliant at soothing and hydrating dehydrated sensitive skin for an extremely natural moisture surge. The humble tomato has been touted as the secret to eternal youth due to its ability to boost collagen production and neutralise free radicals that damage the body. Harness that power with Yes to Tomatoes Deep Pore Exfoliating Cleanser (£9.99, victoriahealth.com). Powerful enough to combat blackheads and breakouts, but gentle enough for daily use, this effective cleanser includes a blend of the potent antioxidant lycopene naturally found in tomatoes to protect the skin from environmental agents that can cause clogged pores.

‘I’ve never been to a nursery like this before!’Tucked away on Woburn Hill, opposite St George’s College near Weybridge, you will find the jewel in the crown of Surrey`s horticultural industry.

From the outside you look down the long entrance driveway lined with specimen trees and wonder what is inside. Once you have parked and walk through the nursery entrance gates, you enter a world of horticultural inspiration, where the range and quality of plants makes you wonder why you have never previously visited.

‘Where did you find this range of plants?’We are passionate about everything we do at The Plantation and one thing you will notice immediately is the scale and size of plants on offer compared to a regular garden centre. As keen plantsmen we take pleasure in personally selecting plants from the best growers from all over Europe.

‘I need screening, I am not able to have asolid fence on my boundary and I have alarge gap to fill’With continual building development in the local area we find that our customers frequently ask for high screening and, quite understandably, they don’t want to wait 20 years for the plants to grow. Through our long term production plan we can provide plants of all sizes, small and large. High hedges are another frequent request and again we can

provide a wide range of plants, small and large, to suit all requirements, all locations, and all budgets.

‘What else do I need to dothe planting?’From composts, bark mulch and fertilisers to professional tools, tree stakes and wheelbarrows, we have everything you need to undertake your project, including some specialist items not available elsewhere. In addition, our Gavin Jones Garden

Page 87: Weybridge Life Magazine June 2012

Machinery Shop offers a range of high quality garden machinery including major brands such as Stihl , Hayter , Alko , Mitox and Viking. Staffed by qualified and experienced fitters, we offer advice, demonstrations, equipment and spare parts as well as servicing and repairs for most types of garden machinery.

‘How do I get this homeand plant it?’Here at the Plantation we offer a variety of delivery options. We can wrap and pack plants into your own vehicle, deliver them in our delivery van, or for larger trees, deliver them on our lorry, complete with mounted crane.

If you feel the plants are too large for you to handle, we also offer a planting service. We will visit your garden, assess the planting area, and then arrange for an all-in service, all backed up with a 12 month guarantee.

‘Fancy a coffee?’Choosing plants can be thirsty work so why not visit the Plantation Coffee House serving Starbucks coffee? As well as a range of coffee, teas and soft drinks we also serve a selection of hot and cold paninis , sandwiches ,soups and cakes . The Plantation Coffee House is located centrally within the

nursery, enabling you to relax with your refreshments in the middle of the beautiful surroundings.

‘I need some help please’Here at The Plantation we pride ourselves on the high standard of our customer service; we understand the benefits of helping our clients to make an informed decision so our friendly qualified staff are always on hand to guide you through your purchase.

Alternatively, if it’s a complete design and build project that you’re after, our experienced award-winning team can offer the full range of design and landscaping services.

‘What makes ThePlantation special?’The Plantation may offer spectacular plants in an inspirational setting but what makes it so special is its staff and the organisation behind them. The Plantation, as part of the successful Gavin Jones Group, has achieved Investors in People Gold Standard, recently won the Toast of Surrey Business Award 2012, is an award-winning landscape business and an active member of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and the Horticultural Trade Association (HTA).

The Plantation, based near Weybridge in Surrey, is a source of inspiration for all visitors whether keen horticulturalists or novice gardeners.

Wisteria Floribunda

Climbers can completely transform the garden atmosphere by softening hard features, as well as providing shade and cooling from the sun, or privacy from peering eyes. When used in conjunction with trellis or fencing, climbers can also provide the garden with room dividers, particularly useful in smaller gardens where they tend to occupy less space than many hedges. Use in conjunction with

pergolas they can create outdoor room complete with roof !

Before going further I should stop a moment and explain what I mean by a climbing plant or wall shrub, as this is something which often confuses people. Climbers as the name suggests are plants which on the whole will climb up walls or other surfaces provided they are given support, such as with vine

eyes and wires. A few are self supporting eg hedera (ivy), but even these benefit from some additional support to speed up the elongation growth, as well as ensuring the growth is spread out to clothe surfaces quickly. Most require regular tying in to achieve the maximum benefit. Wall shrubs are tall growing shrubs which benefit from being grown against a surface to allow weak growth to be

tied in and trained, otherwise they will usually produce open spreading shrubs if grown in the open. A few also benefit from the reflected light and heat that they can receive from surfaces such as walls.

At this time of year we can be spoilt by the numerous flowering climbers, such as clematis and wisteria. With a bit of planning a large wall could soon be

PLANTING SCHEME LATE IN THE DAY, ALMOST AN AFTER THOUGHT. THIS CAN BE A MISTAKE,AS THEY PROVIDE A VALUABLE ADDITION TO MOST GARDENS, SMALL OR LARGE.

Page 89: Weybridge Life Magazine June 2012

brightening up the garden with climbing roses, the fragrance of the trachelospemum jasminoides (evergreen jasmine) or the exotic looking campsis flower. Bringing up the end of summer, climbers such as parthenocissus or Boston Ivy and related vines come into their own, with their vibrant displays of red, orange and yellow produced by their leaves, when they go into autumn colour.

If a bit of class is required a grape vine will provide this in bucket loads, provided you position it in a sunny spot. To finish the look and continue the theme, why not grow it on ropes strung between posts? What could look better

than bunches of grapes dangling down, particularly near the patio where you can reach out and savour your harvest, a fig can be trained in a similar fashion!

Over the winter months climbers such as ivy come into their own, the green or variegated leaves, depending on variety, providing a welcome but reliable backdrop to gardens which are often devoid of much greenery. Wall shrubs, such as garrya elliptica, provide additional winter interest, evergreen leaves provide an excellent backdrop to show off the unusual long tassels that will continue to attract inquisitive eyes into the spring.

A reliable stalwart at this time of year is the pyracantha, an often neglected wall shrub relegated to hedging. This multi seasonal interest plant has masses of small white flowers in the spring, whilst the autumn berries provide welcome wintery colour, whilst supporting wildlife, particularly the bird population.

Climbers will do well on most walls, except north facing ones. These trying conditions mean that most climbers will struggle to thrive, however if you would like one that will be happy in these situations look no further than the climbing hydrangea, hydrangea petiolaris, an attractive

white flowered hydrangea.

When choosing climbers you should bear in mind that they can take several seasons to effectively start covering a wall or pergola, hence the use of specimen plants can make the difference for those who are a little impatient for results.

Don’t wait, hide those eyesores with a climber today!

T he International Family Justice Annual Report has said recently in the news that

cases of a parent fleeing with their children to a different country are on the increase. With the summer holidays just round the corner, many parents are concerned.

At Barlow Robbins, we have a specialist team who have expertise in dealing with international children cases in particular when a child is either removed to another country or retained wrongfully in the UK. If you are reading this article and are concerned that your child may be retained in another country following, for example a holiday with the other parent, you should consider the following check list:

Do you have details of the place where he or she will be staying with the children - this should

FAMILY LAW

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD DOES NOT RETURN AS PLANNED AND AGREED?Firstly, check ferry crossings/flight delays etc.  If you have a mobile telephone number for the children or your former partner, try and make contact to see if there is a simple explanation for the delay.  If you are concerned after these initial checks, contact your local police station in the first instance who will then contact Interpol - an organisation that can work with police forces overseas to help find your child. They can also contact the National Ports Office to alert all ports of the risk of abduction.  You should then contact a family solicitor who has a specialism in international children disputes.

include address, contact telephone number and email address if possible also sight of the tickets.

That you have specifically agreed in advance: the duration of the holiday the specific times, if possible, when you can contact the children by telephone or they can contact you.

That it is clearly understood where and when the children are to be

collected from for the start of the holiday and on what date and time it is agreed they will be returned.

If your child is on any medication or needs any specific care, check that your former partner knows how to administer the medical treatment if appropriate, or what medication the children are taking.

Ensure that the children have all the appropriate vaccinations for their holiday destination.

Chestnut Lodge is an exceptional Grade II listed property and is tucked away behind wrought iron gates boasting immaculately landscaped gardens and grounds, beautifully manicured lawns, topiary and wonderful ancient wisteria. There is an array of exotic plants as well as a naturalised pond and a walk through aviary. This landmark period residence is steeped in history, having been the home to two former presidents of the Avicultural Society and once the home to an

unrivalled private collection of birds and animals. The owners built up an impressive stock over many decades of rare and unusual bird species, believed to be the biggest private collection of exotic birds in the UK.

The property enjoys over 7000 square feet of accommodation arranged over 3 floors and is linked via a curved archway to a 2 bedroom 2 storey annexe which would make an ideal staff/annexe accommodation. There are various outbuildings as well as a detached 3 bedroom lodge house with its own private garden. The main house enjoys a host of classical period features including elegant high ceilings with decorative cornicing, open fireplaces and tall

Georgian windows, offering superb views over the parkland grounds. A particular and rare feature of the house is the grand ‘concert room’ with its bespoke acoustic ceiling and a spectacular full height fireplace and chimney breast.

This magnificent Georgian country house lends itself to some significant improvements and updating and could also make a fabulous residential home or company headquarters, subject to the necessary planning consents. Whilst giving the feeling of being completely hidden away and private, Cobham Village is less than 1 mile and is well positioned for the A3 and the M25. The area is renowned for its excellent local

schooling such as Notre Dame and the ACS International School.

Chestnut Lodge is an extraordinary opportunity and really must be viewed to be appreciated.

Knott Park House is a Victorian manor house, built in 1885 for the Bryant family, founder

of the Bryant and May Match Company. It was a revolutionary build at this time as it was one of the very few country homes with electricity. In the early 20th century Sir Robert McAlphine, who was made a baronet for services in the First World War, bought Knott Park House as his primary residence as a reflection of his new position and wealth. Sir Robert modernised the property extending it further adding a new dining room, kitchen, garages and stables. He also invested in landscaping the gardens capitalising on the magnificent views over the Surrey Hills. In 1948 the estate was divided into three sections. Further alterations have been made turning it into five separate homes retaining a number of original features including high panelled ceilings,
