conƟnued... THE WEEKLY WORD EPIPHANY PARISH OF SEATTLE . MARCH 18, 2013 The Church as Practice: A View for Belovedness and Eternity Dear Epiphany, I was talking to a friend that raises money for a prestigious univer- sity, and she said, “What you are, (meaning the church), we want to be.” You may notice when you receive your alumni magazine that your alma mater now offers, in addition to yearly reunions and lo- cal gatherings, trips to exotic lands led by world renowned experts (from “said” university), on-line and extension courses, blogs and other beneϐits, all in an effort to maximize touch points with gradu- ates. Imagine how thrilled universities would be to have their alumni drop in once a week for a lecture and a concert. That is how some perceive what we do, and that is okay. But there are a few differences between the education of a person and the formation of hearts and the exploration of souls. To begin, there is no criterion for membership in our church. Jesus sets this standard over and over again as he eats with whoever is at the ta- ble, and furthermore, invites whoever is within earshot to join him. This proclivity drove the Pharisees crazy. “Are there no standards? There is, after all, a hierarchy upon which the world sits, as ordered and favored by God!” That sounds silly to us now. Were we to be asked on a test if all people are equal in the eyes of God, we would certainly answer “yes” and probably write a prize winning essay as to why. Jeffrey Skilling would have done so, as would have Kenneth Lay, and maybe even Bernie Madoff. These were “A+” students, all warmly courted by their respective alma mater. Schools of distinc- tion have standards after all, and so they build communities that are composed of people with similar composition. And that is com- fortable. I get what that is like. I’d rather play tennis with someone who can sustain a rally. I’d rather go skiing with someone who can ski a bowl. I’d rather have a conversation with someone who can speak English. We are just more comfortable with those who are like us, and we order our life accordingly.
