THE WEEKLY WORD EPIPHANY PARISH OF SEATTLE . MARCH 3, 2014 Continued on the next page... “Adding On” in the Lenten Season A Reϔlection by the Parish Nurse, Kathryn Barrett, RN, MSN When you think of March, what do you think of? St. Patrick’s Day and the patron saint of Ireland driving the snakes from the land of shamrocks? The Ides of March and Caesar’s unfortunate interlude with Brutus? The vernal equinox and the return of an equal meas- ure of light and darkness in our 24 hour earthly day? The renewed warmth and scent of your garden? The arrival of the Lenten rose heralding the beginning of a new season? Did you know that some people celebrate some interesting things in the month of March? Oreo Cookie Day. National Pancake Day. (And it follows that there would be a Maple Syrup Day, right?!) Po- tato Chip Day. Peanut Cluster Day. Chocolate Covered Raisin Day. Chocolate Caramel Day. And, ta da!, my personal favorite -- Corn Dog Day!! I’m not making this stuff up! And would you ϐind it interesting that March is Red Peppers and Broccoli Month, which coincides with Berries and Cherries Month, both of which are observed simultaneously with Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Colic Awareness Month (which the Wesch family is pretty happy about, I’m sure!)? But let us not forget to mention Spinach Day and National Frozen Food Day! This seems to be the month (or the week or the day) to celebrate lots of things. We have a Dr. Seuss Day in March, as well as a Don- ald Duck Day. March is International Mirth Month and Humorists Are Artists Month. While those in New Orleans throw beads during outrageous parades during March Mardi Gras, the Germans down beer on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday) to ofϐicially end the party of Fasching. Thankfully, we also have Napping Day and, ta da!, anoth- er personal favorite -- True Confessions Day! And, so, what do these March celebrations and customs have in common? Well, at ϐirst blush, perhaps nothing. But might these events and interests serve as a possible compass for a deeper (and healthier) season of Lent, which begins this year on March 5?
