In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch them-selves thin on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. One way to make shopping more man-ageable is to establish spend-ing limits that dictate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact when approaching the subject of gift limits. Dis-cuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reason-able amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a fi gure and then

determine the average, using that fi gure as your spending limit.

Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to aff ord their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and you’re spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.

When no such limit is estab-lished, you may go overboard to compensate, even if you cannot aff ord to do so.

Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggest going on vaca-tion together to make better use of your collective funds. A well-timed extended fam-ily vacation in lieu of gift ex-changes may alleviate the stress of the holiday season, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.

Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each person to work with can make for a more peaceful holiday season by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shopping.

Bringing a baby home changes a person’s life. Ba-bies bring great joy but also some confusion into a household, especially as the new parents adapt in their fi rst few weeks or months as mom and dad.

Babies tend to draw atten-tion away from their folks, whose needs may be lost in the shuffl e. As baby’s fi rst holiday season approaches, the youngster’s parents and extended family often at-tempt to make the experi-ence as memorable as pos-sible. But family and friends of new parents also can take steps to lighten new parents’ holiday burdens by off er-ing some thoughtful holi-day gifts that can provide support and love for newly minted moms and dads.

• Time: New parents typi-cally are short on time. There’s little time to shop, eat and sleep. Friends and family of new parents can give the gift of time this holiday season. Off er your services as a babysitter so new parents can enjoy some alone time, or simply lend a hand with household chores so the new mom and dad can relax instead of work while their bundle of joy is napping.

• Memories: The fi rst hours and days of having a new child are fi lled with oppor-tunities to capture every moment. Gone are the days when fi lm must be devel-oped and tangible photos must be stored in photo albums. Digital technology

HOW TO HELP NEW PARENTS

MAKE THE HOLIDAYS SPECIAL

means some photos never make it to hard copies. But even if photos rarely fi nd their way into frames, pre-serving early memories is essential. Computers can fail and camera cards can break. In such instances, precious images may be lost forever unless parents have backup. An Eye-Fi™ wireless memory card will automatically up-

load images from a camera to a computer or external memory source, ensuring no precious snapshots are lost.

• Food: New parents’ nour-ishment may come from any package that’s easily torn open with their teeth while tending to a crying infant. Meals, snacks and food bas-kets make great gifts that keep parents fed and happy. Consider memberships to fruit of the month clubs or call the new parents’ favorite restaurant and send them a meal.

• Pampering: Sometimes

new parents just need some pampering, whether it’s a shopping excursion, a visit to a hair dresser, an ap-pointment with a masseuse, or something as simple as a long, uninterrupted hot shower. A gift card to a spa or salon may make a good gift for a luxury-starved par-ent. Just remember to factor child care into the equation

so that Mom or Dad will not have any ex-cuse to cancel his or her ap-pointment.

Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to reconnect and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not al-ways eco-friendly or timely, as gifts bought online must

be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that last-minute shoppers may not have.

The benefi ts of shopping locally go beyond conve-nience and the chance to re-duce your carbon footprint.

The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefi t your community and the people who call it home.

Local economy

When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their local communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to sup-port a neighbor instead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbors, so shopping lo-cal can strengthen the local economy by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your communi-ty fail to support local small businesses.

Community identity

Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood identity, and that identity can create a stronger sense of commu-nity among you and your neighbors. In addition, a unique community identity

can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of local real estate while also attracting more people to local businesses in your neighborhood.

Uniqueness of gifts

The gifts you buy when shopping locally also can benefi t your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell more homemade items than their national competi-tors. Recipients of such items may fi nd such gifts more thoughtful than mass pro-duced items bought from national chains, and the uniqueness of homemade gifts may encourage the gifts’ recipients to visit your community and do some shopping, further benefi t-ting your local economy.

Customer service

The accessibility of customer service is another oft-over-looked benefi t of shopping locally. When buying from

national chains, especially during the holiday season when such businesses may be overwhelmed with or-ders, making contact with customer service depart-ments can be a trying exer-cise in patience. Long wait times on the phone or on-line can make the process of contacting customer service extremely frustrating. But

such frustration is rare when buying from local business-es, as consumers can simply take their products into the store, where employees can immediately address their concerns. In addition, buy-ing locally makes it more convenient for friends and family members who also live in your community to return their gifts.

Nearly every man or woman has hit that all too familiar wall when holiday shop-ping for friends and family. While many people might be a cinch to shop for, there always seems to be one stickler on holiday shop-ping lists, and fi nding the right gift for that person can be an exercise in patience and perseverance.

But even the most patient shopper has his or her lim-its, and many people fi nd themselves giving gift cards to those friends or family members who seemingly have everything already. Such cards make great gifts, but only when gift givers employ a few tricks of the gift card trade.

• Buy directly from the re-tailer. It’s easy to be duped by a counterfeit gift card, which can be embarrass-

ing for both the gift giver and its eventual recipient. Counterfeit gift cards are big business for criminals who prey on gift givers dur-ing the holiday season. Only buy gift cards directly from the retailer, as cards sold by other sources, such as an online auction site, may be stolen or counterfeit. You don’t want to be the person who gave a stolen or coun-terfeit card, and your friend or family member does not want to be subjected to an inquiry as to why he or she is attempting to use a sto-len or counterfeit card.

• Examine the card before leaving the store. Once a cashier or customer service employee hands you a gift card, examine it for tam-pering before leaving the store. Some criminals gain access to gift cards, even those that appear to be be-

hind lock and key, to learn the PIN number associated with the card. Once they have the PIN, recipients can then recreate their own card, using the stolen PIN to activate and make pur-chases on their counterfeit cards long before the real card is sold to you. If you detect any damage, ask for a new card before leaving the store.

• Include a gift receipt with the card. When giving a gift card, don’t forget to include the gift receipt. The gift re-ceipt not only verifi es the value of the gift card, but also includes the date the card was purchased. That’s important information, as many companies begin to charge fees, some of which may be exorbitant, on un-used cards after a prede-termined period of time. Recipients who have the gift receipt won’t have to haggle with retailers about the value of the card should that ever be in dispute, and the receipt also can serve as a reminder that the recipi-ent needs to use the card before a given date to avoid fees.

• Consider a general pur-pose gift card. If that stickler on your holiday shopping list is especially diffi cult to shop for, then you might

want to consider a general purpose gift card issued by a company such as Ameri-can Express, MasterCard or Visa. These cards generally allow recipients to use their gift wherever they choose, whether it’s to put gas in their tank or buy groceries. That versatility is valuable if you truly have no idea what your friend or family mem-ber needs or where he or she likes to shop. One no-table disadvantage to gen-eral purpose gift cards is that they tend to come with more fees than more tradi-tional gift cards purchased directly from specifi c retail-ers. Investigate these fees and fi nd a card that charges no fees or only minimal fees.

Gift cards make great gifts and can bail out frustrated holiday shoppers who sim-ply can’t fi nd that perfect gift for a friend or family member. But when shop-ping for gift cards, be sure to exercise caution before buying a card so your loved is not put in an embarrass-ing or costly situation.

DID YOU KNOW?Though there is no offi cial data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for children of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street” fi gure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the fi rst Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holi-day season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been rein-carnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel®, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year an-niversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indicated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

SERVICESPRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Though the job market for newly minted college graduates has proven less than ideal in recent years, members of the class of 2014 entered a job market that was on the rebound. According to the “Job Outlook 2014” survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers anticipated hiring nearly 8 percent more 2014 graduates for their domestic operations than they hired from the class of 2013.

That’s good news for new grads, but members of the class of 2014 should still expect a competitive job market in which com-panies can aff ord to be patient as they attempt to fi nd the best possible candidate for each opening. Oftentimes the best can-didate, especially for entry-level positions, is the one who com-bines some experience with a willingness to learn and do what-ever it takes to help a company succeed. Many candidates boast such experience and enthusiasm, but there are some additional steps new graduates can take to improve their chances of land-ing their fi rst jobs out of college.

• Gain some relevant experience. While college is the best time to gain some experience that’s relevant to your fi eld, that does not mean you can’t still earn an internship now that you have donned your cap and gown and received your diploma. Many businesses look to recent graduates to fi ll their internships, as recent grads have years of study under their belts and, because they are no longer enrolled in classes, more fl exibility than cur-rent students. If the job market in your chosen fi eld is tepid, start looking for internships. These can be a great way to start making some professional contacts, and many people fi nd themselves ultimately working full-time for the company where they fi rst landed an internship.

• Establish an online presence. Another way for recent gradu-ates to get noticed is to establish a positive online presence. Something as simple as creating a profi le on the professional networking site LinkedIn can help recent graduates get noticed by prospective employers. Even if you have little or no relevant professional experience, create a profi le that includes your edu-cation history, interests, accolades or awards you earned while in school and even a brief summary of your career goals.

HELPFUL HINTS TO LAND YOUR FIRST JOBAnother way to establish an online presence is to begin a blog. The blog should not be used as a tool to discuss your personal life, but rather to express your thoughts on topics relevant to the career you hope to pursue. Demonstrating an understanding or even just a passion for the industry can be a great way to show prospective employers that you are looking for a career and not just a job.

• Join a professional organization. Other options to network and improve your chances of landing your fi rst job can be attained by joining a professional organization. Many such organizations welcome new members, even those with relatively little or even no professional experience. Your university may even sponsor such an organization and host regularly scheduled forums rel-evant to your industry. Such forums often feature lectures or talk sessions with already established professionals who can provide advice on landing a fi rst job or internship or furnish grads with industry contacts who might off er similar help. Memberships in such organizations is often free or inexpensive, so take advan-tage of this opportunity if it presents itself.

• Use the resources at your disposal. Many college graduates are unaware that they have valuable resources at their disposal that can greatly increase their chances of securing a job out of col-lege. The career services offi ce at the university is an invaluable resource that is plugged into the business community in its town or city. Such an offi ce can connect you will fellow alumni, many of whom want to help their fellow graduates establish their careers. A career services offi ce also can help new graduates fi ne tune their resumes and cover letters so they have a greater chance of landing a job.

Parents also might be a great resource in your job hunt. Your parents may have a career’s worth of professional contacts who might be able to help you land a job. Don’t be hesitant to ask your parents for help.

Getting a fi rst job out of college is rarely easy. But there are some strategies motivated grads can employ to greatly increase their chances of fi nding a job and starting their careers.
