Here’s a little blast from the past for you since the old year end inventory has me a little pressed for time. If you can come up with nay more idioms, please forward them along to me.
Lately I’ve cultivated an interest in all the plant and gardening terms that have blos-somed into common use. I thought I’d branch out of my normal green thumb routine and root out some of these idioms for you. I germinated this idea some time ago. At fi rst it was just a kernel of an idea that you might think is corny but, as I plowed into it, the idea blossomed. I realized that it would be a tough row to hoe. I wouldn’t be out of the woods until I could come up with enough terms to use as examples. If I couldn’t, the whole idea would wither on the vine. Flowery prose wouldn’t be enough. I decided that the best idea would be to ask around to see if anybody else had any ideas.
I went next door and asked the young mother who lived there if she had any ideas. Her husband was home and they were entertaining some of his guy friends that afternoon. She was a fl ower of womanhood and, among all these rough men, she seemed a rose among thorns. I’ve always considered her husband to be a bit of a sap but she was always fresh as a daisy. She had told me before that her family roots were in the Big Apple. She and her family had tired of the bustle of the city moved and are putting down roots here since they enjoy the quieter life in Upstate. Her husband’s company had opened a branch offi ce in the area. Busi-ness was very good and they found that they were soon rolling in clover. His business was growing by leaps and bounds. They had recently had identical twin girls and they were like peas in a pod. They also had an older son and they felt bad about uprooting him from his old neighborhood and friends. It was hard for him at fi rst but he seemed to be making friends and transplanting well. The young sprout was the spitting image of his father. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree after all. The husband’s hobby was restoring cars and his latest project was a cherry ’57 Chevy that was parked in the driveway. He was very proud of it. I could tell by the way he bragged about and polished it that it was the apple of his eye. He told me a buddy of his had an even nicer ’58 Chevy Nomad and he really wished that his car was as nice. I told him that his car was quite sharp and reminded him that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
It was at this point that he noticed a long scratch on the side of the car. He thought I’d done it. I could tell by his furrowed brow that he was quite upset. I could see that this was becoming a thorny situation. I told him that I hadn’t gone near his car and that he was bark-ing up the wrong tree. I tried to be as cool as a cucumber. He was not placated and my rosy outlook evaporated. My quest for gathering gardening idioms had so far only provided this bitter harvest. He seemed quite perturbed and he and his buddies started to approach me in such a threatening manner that I feared they would mow me down and I’d soon be pushing up daisies. I longed for the green grass of home so I just took off running. It was quite a distance and by the time I reached home I was plum tuckered out.
So here I was with the fruits of my labor wasted. My budding interest in gardening idioms had been nipped in the bud by this unseemly altercation with my neighbor. Knowing that you reap what you sow, I considered offering my irate neighbor an olive branch as a gesture of good will. I decided that he was such a snake in the grass that it would be a waste of time. It was time to seek out greener pastures.
This idea was turning out to be no bed of roses. I felt as though I’d led myself up the garden path and ended up with nowhere to go. Perhaps I just couldn’t see the forest for the trees. I needed to come up with something quick since my deadline was fast approaching. I couldn’t let the grass grow under my feet any longer than I already had. I need the help of someone who really knows their onions. There’s no one in my family tree that I thought would be of help so I’ll have to turn to you; my readers.
Try as I might I can’t seem to come up with any garden or plant idioms. If you can think of any, please forward them along to The Weekly. Thanks for the read.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots orga-nization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans
know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsFo-rOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected].

* Full tanks conserve fuel. Many people have long believed that a nearly full tank of gas means the fuel within that tank is less likely to evaporate, and that tanks that half-full tanks are losing gas to evaporation. Though this might have been the case years ago, today’s ve-hicle’s are smarter than ever before, and their fuel systems are designed with vapor recovery systems so drivers traveling around with tanks that are closer to empty than full aren’t losing gas to evaporation.
* Manual transmissions are more fuel effi cient. Tech-nology can once again be credited with turning con-ventional wisdom on its head. In the past, manual transmission vehicles might have been more fuel effi -cient because drivers could more effi ciently control en-gine revving with a 5-speed manual transmission than they could with the standard 3-speed automatic transmis-sion. However, automatic transmissions have evolved over the years, and they are now more adept at control-ling revs and conserving fuel than many drivers of manual transmission vehicles.
* When you fi ll up matters. Some drivers have long be-lieved that fi lling up during the cooler hours of the day earns them more gas than fi lling up when the tempera-tures are at their peak. This theory traces its origins to the fact that liquids are at their most dense when they

ABOUT FUEL EFFICIENCY
are cool. But today’s fi lling stations store their gas in tanks beneath the ground, which is why you might see a tanker emptying its contents into the ground at the fi lling station. These underground tanks are insulated from temperature swings, so you aren’t likely to receive any more gas by fi lling up in the morning than you will when fi lling up at night.
* An old vehicle is destined to be less fuel effi cient. Any product that is allowed to fall into disrepair will prove less effi cient than products that are well maintained, and cars are no exception. A poorly maintained car will
not operate at peak fuel effi -ciency because it’s likely be-ing forced to work harder to get down the street than it would if it was well kept. But a well-maintained vehicle should not grow less fuel ef-fi cient over time.
* Shifting into neutral while stopping saves gas. This is another misconception that was once true but no longer applies thanks to advances in technology. When en-gines still had carburetors, shifting into neutral might have helped conserve fuel by stopping the fl ow of gas into the engine while the car was idling. However, fuel injection systems are now
computerized and capable of sensing when an engine is revving above idle. This shuts off the fuel injectors, preventing gas from being injected into the engine and preventing gas from being wasted while the vehicle is stopped as a result.
