Once diagnosed, Long QT is treatable. A common treatment is the prescription of a beta-blocker, while sometimes an Implantable Cardioverter Defi brillator (ICD) is necessary. Our world has certainly gotten a fall feel to it now that temperatures have returned to normal for this time of year. Those lingering days of 80° and higher in earlier in the month kind of fooled us into feeling that summer was going to go on forever. Now we know it ain’t so and we’re getting the idea that we need to pay attention to the tasks of autumn. Most of our lawns look better now than they have in years after the wettest summer I can remember.
There’s another little task you need to do this time of year that can make a huge difference to the health and vigor of your lawn for years to come. I consider this task to be THE most important aspect of lawn care and it is also the one that most folks blow off for some reason. I’m talking about performing some pH tests on your lawn. Checking your soil’s pH will let you know if you need to apply lime (pulverized limestone) to counteract acidity and it will also let you determine how much you need to apply. I think most people blow this important step off because it sounds complicated or “scientifi c” or perhaps they feel that they’ve done enough for the lawn once they’ve applied their grub control and fall lawn food. I’m here to tell you that, if you never check your soil’s pH and correct it, your lawn will eventually thin out, moss will start to take over and you’ll be off to buy moss killer and more and more lawn food to try to restore it. On the other hand, if you DO keep the soil’s acidity level near neutral, moss won’t take over and you’ll need less lawn food to have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood. Liming is inexpensive and is the “ounce of prevention” that can save you a lot of money and frustration over the years. Here’s the deal:
Over time ALL soils gradually become acidic. Rotting grass clipping, leaves and other organic debris contributed to soil acidifi cation. Even the lawn foods that you put on the lawn helps increase the soil’s acidity level over time. Acid rain has a hand in the process as well. Acidifi cation happens more quickly in sandy soils than in clay based soils. Acidi-fi cation of soil is a natural process and many plants actually prefer soil that’s slightly acidic. Unfortunately grass isn’t one of them.
As the soil becomes more acidic, the bacteria and other microscopic organisms that dwell in the soil start to die off. These are the organisms you grass needs to convert naturally occurring nutrients (or nutrients that you apply in the form of lawn food) into forms that your lawn’s roots can absorb. Acidity also impedes osmosis or the ability of the lawn to absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil. If you’ve ignored soil pH for several years, you may have the impression that your favorite lawn food isn’t working as well as it used to. This is due to increased acidity of the soil. You’ll probably fi nd that, if you correct the pH of the soil, you’ll not have to feed you lawn as often.
But why, you may ask, is it so important to apply lime in the fall? Why not wait until spring? After you’ve applied the proper amount of lime, it will take at least two months for the lime to react with the soil. By applying lime in the fall, you’ll give it all winter to have a chance to react with the soil. You could wait and apply it in spring but you won’t get the benefi t from your application until halfway through the growing season. If you’ve never applied lime to your lawn before, I’d recommend that you test and apply lime this fall and then test the soil again in spring to make sure you’ve gotten the correction you needed.
Those of you who cleverly avoid raking fallen leaves in fall by mowing them into the lawn with a mulching mower should be aware that your lawn will become acidic more quickly. Regular pH testing and more frequent lime applications will be necessary to keep your lawn thick and healthy. Generally, once you’ve corrected the lawn’s pH, you shouldn’t need to apply lime for three to fi ve years depending on your soil type. Considering how important, easy and inexpensive maintaining proper soil pH is, I’m amazed at how many people ignore it. Thanks for the read.

PRAYERS
EXALTATION of the HOLY CROSS. “We know that our old self was crucified with him ... that we no longer be in slavery to sin.” (Rom 6:6) For “the message of the cross ... to us who are being saved ... is the power of God.” (1Cor1:18) We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you be-cause by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. J.M.T.

EYES ON HEALTH
STAGES OF VISION DEVELOPMENTBefore birth, proper prenatal care and a nutritionally
balanced diet will aid in the development of your baby’s eyes. Infants are born with an underdeveloped visual sys-tem. Your child’s vision will grow and develop with him, progressing from a blurry, shadowy world as a newborn to performing complex visual tasks by the time he reaches school age. You can help your child’s progression by using toys, games and playtime activities that encourage visual development. Early detection and treatment of eye disease and/or vision problems are essential for proper visual de-velopment.
PEDIATRIC EYE EXAMINATIONTh e doctor will examine your child’s eyes for general
eye health and visual activity. Various tests can determine if the eyes are properly aligned, if the eye muscles are func-tioning normally, if the eyes are working together and if your child is nearsighted, farsighted or has astigmatism. Testing is possible even in infancy.

There are many people in life who are valuable to us: a lov-ing spouse, children, extend-ed family-and a mechanic you can trust. Because many of us know very little about car repair, we need a trust-worthy mechanic. Many auto mechanics aren’t deceptive; they’re just untrained or igno-rant of certain kinds of repair. Here are a few suggestions to avoid an auto repair regret or rip-off.
‘I know a guy...’ This is the best place to start. Talk to your friends, family and co-workers. Which repair shop do they use? How long have they been going there? Would they recommend them? Once you have decided on a shop, contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to fi nd out if
Avoiding An Auto Repair Rip-Off By Craig W. Armstrong
any complaints have been fi led against it.
If you are satisfi ed with what you fi nd, take your car in. Be as specifi c as possible when describing the problem; they can’t help if they don’t know what’s wrong. At this point it is a good idea to ask if the shop’s mechanics are ASE (Automotive Service Excel-lence) certifi ed. Keep in mind that mechanics can be ASE certifi ed in many different ar-eas, such as brakes, engines, electrical systems, etc., so if you have a problem with your brakes, a mechanic certifi ed in engines may be underqual-ifi ed to fi x your problem.
Next, make it clear that you want to be contacted BEFORE ANY WORK BEGINS. Most
shops are good about this, but it never hurts to remind them. Also state that if anything needs to be replaced, you want the old part. This may stop a rip-off before it starts. A dishonest mechanic is less likely to needlessly replace something if you’re going to see the replaced part.
When you fi nd out the diag-nosis, take notes. Have the mechanic explain everything to you in terms you can un-derstand. Ask whether the repairs are necessary or only recommended and then tell them you’ll get back to them about doing the repair.
Now it’s time to use your best anti-rip-off tool-the In-
ternet. Do some research; use a search engine and fi nd out if what they told you is accu-rate. You can even fi nd parts prices online and fi gure out if they are charging you fairly (be aware that a markup price is standard business proce-dure). You could also contact a few other local shops and get their price for doing the same repair.
If your investigation proves the repairs are legitimate and at a reasonable price, give them the OK to proceed. When you pick up your car, go over the invoice carefully with them and make sure all charges are explained. Also verify in writing any guar-antees that come with their work.
We all want to hire someone we can trust, and most me-chanics are trustworthy. Once you do fi nd ‘your’ mechanic, you’ll also be able to say, ‘I’ve got a guy... .’
