HOUSE & GARDEN CLUB IS SELLING MINI BOXWOOD HOLIDAY TREES
BALLSTONS SPA – The Ballston Spa House and Garden Club is selling mini-boxwood holiday trees. Each tree is approximately 12” high, made with real boxwood shaped into a mini-tree, and placed in a white container. They make lovely holiday gifts that will last for several months with only a bit of watering. The cost is $25 for a tree decorated with red or gold rib-bon and ornaments, or $20 for an undecorated tree. Trees can be ordered up until December 7th by calling 587-3085. The trees will be available for pickup on or about December 14th. Information regarding the pickup site will be given when the order is made. The sale of these holiday trees supports the club’s youth scholarships and the maintenance of club-spon-sored village public gardens.
BARNES & NOBLE BOOKFAIR SARATOGA SPRINGS – Support the Ballston Spa Public Library at our fi rst ever Barnes & Noble Bookfair on Sun., December 14, from 10:00am-9:00pm. We will off er a free children’s craft make & take from 10:00am-4:00pm, caroling from the St. Mary’s Church Children’s Choir at 1:00pm & 2:00pm, gift wrapping, a reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas at 3:00pm, and much more! It will be a fun-fi lled day for every age, and the perfect opportunity to get that holiday gift shopping done while support-ing your local library! A percentage of store proceeds will be donated to the Ballston Spa Public Library. To support this event online, visit www.bn.com/bookfair, shop and enter the bookfair ID #11485414 between De-cember 14 and December 19, 2014. This event will be held in the Saratoga Springs store on 3029 NY Route 50. Call the library for more information at 518-885-5022.
COMMUNITY EMERGENCY CORPS & TOYS FOR TOTS
BALLSTON SPA – During this upcoming holiday season, Community Emer-gency Corps of Ballston Spa will again be an offi cial drop off point for donations for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. For 2014, we will be partnering with the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Offi ce to broaden the scope of our support for the national Toys for Tots campaign. This campaign has reached out and assisted needy and deserving children all around the capital region for over 45 years. Without this wonderful program, children in our communities would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays the way they deserve. In last year’s campaign the program reached their goal of collecting over 120,000 toys and distributing them to deserving children, making their holiday’s memorable ones. Our program has grown incredibly in 5 years, through your donations, from about 40 toys our fi rst year to well over 200 toys last season. We are hoping that by taking on the Sheriff ’s Department as a partner, we will see a signifi cant increase in donations with the ad-ditional exposure throughout Saratoga County. New, unwrapped toys, games, books, puzzles, sport balls, dolls, snow toys, and anything for kids from infant to teens are all appreciated. Stuff ed toys are the only excep-tion. We have already started to receive donations and will be accepting toys at our station at 78 Thompson St., Ballston Spa, NY until December 15th. You can drop them off anytime, days or evenings. If we are not at the building due to answering emergency calls, we hope you will return at another time with your contribution. As a reminder, toys collected in this area are redistributed right back into this area to those in need. For further information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Otten, Executive Director of CEC, at 885-1478.

German Shepherd Puppies
Gypsy
CollinHis best friend Mick found a home so now it is his turn. He had a very
rough start to his life but now is his time. What a sweetie he is!! He is 4 months old, Black Lab mix, age
appropriate shots, and the sweetest personality. He is great with kids
and other animals and would love a home for the holidays.
These babies are may be pure breed shepherds. Mom was a smaller German shepherd (Mix?) and daddy was a pure breed German Shepherd
that lived next door. The owner of the mother kept her but didn’t want the pups so he gave them to the shelter down south. They are now about 9-10
weeks old up to date on shots and de-wormed. These are very handsome babies and will not last long.
Gypsy came in with her kittens when they were pulled from a local
kill shelter. Her kitten are all safe and sound but she is still waiting for a home. She is a love bug and really just wants a warm place to curl up
in and a nice lap to sit on. If you are looking for a very sweet baby girl
then please come and meet Gypsy.

AFTER THE FIRE PERFORM
LITTER CONTROLBALLSTON SPA - After The Fire has adopted the Assemblyman Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail in Ballston Spa for litter control since 2006. Members make regular trips as soon as the snow has gone for the season, until the snow files again. The Village has placed a trash receptacle at each end of the trail, and users of the trail have been increasingly diligent about using them. Everyone is urged to carry their trash to the receptacles (ciga-rette butts included), as a courtesy to others, to obey the law, and to maintain the aesthetics of the trail. After The Fire helps residents of Saratoga County who have suffered a loss due to fire. They are a non-profit organization that exists entirely on donations and is comprised totally of volunteers, which are always needed. After The Fire provides family members with personal care items, gift cards, Red Cross referral, infor-mational material, emotional support - whatever is needed to help the family through a terrible situation. Anyone inter-ested in helping their neighbors in need may leave a mes-sage on voicemail at 435-4571 or visit www.afterthefire.org.

DID YOU KNOW?Though there is no official data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for children of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lov-able “Sesame Street” figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price
just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincarnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday sea-son. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chick-en Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel®, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special com-memorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some re-ports indicated private sell-ers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

HOW TO ESTABLISH GIFT SPENDING LIMITS
As the cost of living continues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much more expensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overextend themselves financially
come the holiday season.
According to a recent Gallup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790 per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercus-sions for the rest of the year.
In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch them-selves thin on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. One way to make shopping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dictate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys.
It is important to exercise tact when approaching the sub-ject of gift limits. Discuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reasonable amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a figure and then determine the average, using that figure as your spending limit.
Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to afford their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and you’re spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.
When no such limit is established, you may go overboard to compensate, even if you cannot afford to do so.
Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggest go-ing on vacation together to make better use of your collec-tive funds. A well-timed extended family vacation in lieu of gift exchanges may alleviate the stress of the holiday season, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.
Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each per-son to work with can make for a more peaceful holiday sea-son by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shopping.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of peo-ple, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from class-mates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

WHICH UPGRADES ARE WORTH IT TO HELP YOU SELL YOUR HOUSE?
(NewsUSA) - Is it fi nally time to sell your house?
That's the question on homeowners' minds as house prices just posted their largest annual gain since 2005 -- con-grats to those no longer "underwater" on their mortgages -- even as interest rates remain tantalizingly low. But here's the catch: Those same higher prices can make buyers as choosy as a Michelin restaurant reviewer.
"A house with a $1,600 mortgage payment last year now has a $2,000 mortgage payment," one broker told the Wall Street Journal. "Buyers are saying, 'I better like it.'"
To increase your home's "like" quotient, read on to see which upgrades are worth making and which aren't.
Worth It: A new front door. Strictly in terms of return on investment, a steel one topped the list of Remodeling maga-zine's annual Cost vs. Value Report for 2014 -- recouping 96.6 percent of the average price. But a fresh coat of paint can work wonders, too.
Not Worth It: A home-offi ce remodel. We know what you're thinking: With so many more people working from home, wouldn't it be brilliant to rewire the space for elec-tronic equipment, say, and install commercial-grade carpet-ing? Not really. The magazine gave it the lowest return on in-vestment (48.9 percent), and the guy who oversaw the study says, "Home offi ces don't sell houses."
Worth It: A back-up power generator. It's the biggest gainer in the study, jumping 28 percent over last year, and plays especially well in areas brutalized by storms.
Not Worth It: Major bathroom work. "You could install the most spectacular jetted tub, and it still might not suit a buyer," says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby's in Mont-clair, NJ. "Meanwhile, you'd have spent tens of thousands of dollars." That explains why it made Bankrate.com's list of "6 Worst Home Fixes for the Money" and why you should stick to things like re-grouting the shower.
Worth It: Roofi ng replacement. There's a reason this ulti-mate "curb appeal" enhancer consistently makes Remodel-ing's list and is up 11.2 percent over even last year: A roof is the fi rst thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars, and you can kiss that sale good-bye if yours looks like it's been through hell.
"It's a huge turn-off ," says O'Neill, "and makes buyers pre-disposed to fi nd even more things they don't like." For the look of luxury at very aff ordable prices, check out the Value
Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (www.gaf.com), North America's largest roofi ng manufacturer.
Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Again, the key word is "major," and again it's a "taste" issue.

HELPFUL HINTS TO LAND YOUR FIRST JOB
Though the job market for newly minted college graduates has proven less than ideal in recent years, members of the class of 2014 entered a job market that was on the rebound. According to the “Job Outlook 2014” survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers anticipated hiring nearly 8 percent more 2014 graduates for their domestic operations than
they hired from the class of 2013.
That’s good news for new grads, but members of the class of 2014 should still expect a competitive job market in which companies can aff ord to be patient as they attempt to fi nd the best possible candidate for each opening. Oftentimes the best candidate, especially for entry-level positions, is the one who combines some experience with a willingness to learn and do whatever it takes to help a company succeed. Many candidates boast such experience and enthusiasm, but there are some additional steps new graduates can take to improve their chances of landing their fi rst jobs out of college.
• Gain some relevant experience. While college is the best time to gain some experience that’s rel-evant to your fi eld, that does not mean you can’t still earn an internship now that you have donned your cap and gown and received your diploma. Many businesses look to recent graduates to fi ll their internships, as recent grads have years of study under their belts and, because they are no longer en-rolled in classes, more fl exibility than current students. If the job market in your chosen fi eld is tepid, start looking for internships. These can be a great way to start making some professional contacts, and many people fi nd themselves ultimately working full-time for the company where they fi rst landed an internship.
• Establish an online presence. Another way for recent graduates to get noticed is to establish a posi-tive online presence. Something as simple as creating a profi le on the professional networking site LinkedIn can help recent graduates get noticed by prospective employers. Even if you have little or no relevant professional experience, create a profi le that includes your education history, interests, accolades or awards you earned while in school and even a brief summary of your career goals.
Another way to establish an online presence is to begin a blog. The blog should not be used as a tool to discuss your personal life, but rather to express your thoughts on topics relevant to the career you hope to pursue. Demonstrating an understanding or even just a passion for the industry can be a great way to show prospective employers that you are looking for a career and not just a job.
• Join a professional organization. Other options to network and improve your chances of landing your fi rst job can be attained by joining a professional organization. Many such organizations wel-come new members, even those with relatively little or even no professional experience. Your uni-versity may even sponsor such an organization and host regularly scheduled forums relevant to your industry. Such forums often feature lectures or talk sessions with already established professionals who can provide advice on landing a fi rst job or internship or furnish grads with industry contacts who might off er similar help. Memberships in such organizations is often free or inexpensive, so take advantage of this opportunity if it presents itself.
• Use the resources at your disposal. Many college graduates are unaware that they have valuable resources at their disposal that can greatly increase their chances of securing a job out of college. The career services offi ce at the university is an invaluable resource that is plugged into the business community in its town or city. Such an offi ce can connect you will fellow alumni, many of whom want to help their fellow graduates establish their careers. A career services offi ce also can help new graduates fi ne tune their resumes and cover letters so they have a greater chance of landing a job.
Parents also might be a great resource in your job hunt. Your parents may have a career’s worth of professional contacts who might be able to help you land a job. Don’t be hesitant to ask your parents for help. Getting a fi rst job out of college is rarely easy. But there are some strategies motivated grads can employ to greatly increase their chances of fi nding a job and starting their careers.

WEATHER OR NOT, GET YOUR CAR READY NOW
(NAPS)—Here’s advice many motorists can warm up to: “An investment of an hour or two to have your vehicle checked is all it takes to have peace of mind and help avoid the cost and hassle of car trouble during severe weather,” suggested Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Its “Be Car Care Aware” campaign promotes regular vehicle care, main-tenance and repair.
They recommend these steps:
• If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done soon. Cold weather magnifi es existing problems such as pings, hard starts, slug-gish performance or rough idling.
• Have the battery and charging system checked for opti-mum performance.
• Clean, fl ush and put new antifreeze in the cooling sys-tem at least every two years.
• Make sure heaters, de-frosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fl uid. Wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
• Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure—including the spare. If you’ll be driving in snow and ice, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly.
• Have the brakes checked.
• Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks.
• See that exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed.
• Change the oil and fi lter as recommended. Consider “win-ter weight” oil. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission fi lters at the same time.
• Keep the gas tank at least half full to decrease the chances
of moisture forming and freezing in the gas lines.
• Stock an emergency kit with ice scraper, snowbrush, jump-er cables, fl ashlight, fl ares, blanket, matches, bottled water and food.
