MINCHA, MA’ARIV AND A MOVIE CHARLEY’S AUNT (1941)

Directed by Archie Mayo and starring Jack Benny, Kay Francis, James Ellison, Anne Baxter, Edmund Gwenn, and Reg Owen. (**1/2)

Jack Benny brings his own distinctive touch to Brandon Thomas' venerable stage farce. In 1890, two students at Oxford force their rascally friend and fellow student to pose as an aunt from Brazil--where the nuts come from.

Please join us to help make the minyan at 5:00 p.m. and stay for the movie. You’ll have an opportunity to order dinner (self-funded). Popcorn and beverages will be provided.

The divine spark within us

Each year at Hanukkah I try to find new sources from our tradition to add to my personal understanding and meaning of this special holiday. This year I found a resource that has added depth of understanding and meaning to me personally. I share this text with you in the hope that you may find it meaningful as well.

The Sefat Emet (Rabbi Yehudah Leib Alter of Ger - 1847-1905)

“Especially at this season, when lights were miraculously lit for Israel even though they did not have enough oil, there remains light even now to help us, with the aid of these Hanukkah candles, to find that hidden light within.” The Hanukkah candles are a spiritual symbol; the light of the commandments by which we search out our inner selves. We seek out the hidden divine light within ourselves; the mitzvot are light-seeking candles, instruments given to us to aid us in that search.

Commentary: Rabbi Yehudah Leib was known, like many Jewish authors, by the name of his famous text. He was also known or referred to by the place in which he lived, so he was called the Gerer Rav. The Gerer Rav teaches us in this text the power of internal, spiritual light. During the darkest part of the year and during the darkest moments in life there is still a divine spark that exists within us. As the book of Proverbs tells us “The Light of God is the soul of man”. Hannukah and the lights of the menorah become more than a symbol of national revival and the fight against tyranny and oppression, they become beacons to search deep within each of us to find that divine spark. Each of us has a spark that we need to tend and share with others. When we seek our inner selves, we have the ability to blossom into our fullness as human beings.

The fist candle for Hanukkah this year is lit on Sunday evening, December 6th. As you light the candles. I hope you will consider this teaching of the Gerer Rav to look for the spark of the divine within yourself and others.

Chag Urim Sameach,

Memory is such an unpredictable and inconstant friend. We remember this event clearly and that memory is barely remembered, if at all. I have a plethora of memories about the two years we lived in Medan, N. Sumatra, Indonesia. It was an incredible adventure in which we took a five year old and three year old to live half way around the world with aerograms, audiotapes, and monthly phone calls instead of internet, skype, and smart phones. Every Chanukah I am reminded of HOW we celebrated. I will spare you the details, but my husband and I look back fondly on those days. What I find so remarkable is that the spirit and joy of the holiday and the memories we accumulated and built on remain bright and shining in my memory.

Sisterhood is trying to do the same. Over the last few years, we have been trying to build on memories. Create new memories where none or few exist. Enhance old traditions. In November we participated in three events that have been mainstays on our calendar. We saw “Advanced Style” at Movies and Munchies. We are especially grateful to Phyllis Weeks and her committee for putting on this 4-movie program. We had a special opportunity November 8th to listen to Beth Rodgers discuss her book, Freshman Fourteen at Book Fair at the local authors presentation! On November 9thth at our Paid-Up Membership Event we recognized Anne Greenstein as our Valued Volunteer and Phyllis Weeks as our Woman of Achievement. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to Aaron Lewis and Lindsay McCaw of The Corn Potato String Band. Kol hakavod to Mandy Garver and her committee for a lovely evening that will long be remembered!

Looking forward in December and to January we have a number of events that have the potential to be Kodak moments. We have our Chanukah program on December 7th and on December 22nd Sisterhood will make dinner for our guests during Shelter Week. On January 11th we have invited Rabbi David and Alicia Nelson to discuss their trip to Israel over lunch and on January 23rd we have Sisterhood Shabbat.

FYI: we are in the process of starting a new, second Evening Book Club. For additional information, contact Gayle Bialick at 248 354-8808/[email protected] or myself.

Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a happy Chanukah in addition to a happy new year! I hope that the spirit and joy of the holiday season and the memories we make together remain bright and shining in your memory! Fran

THE BETH SHALOM GO TEAM

This feature of Hakol is designed to recognize and profile those volunteers who help make Cong. Beth Shalom go. That is, they provide an invaluable service that our congregation cannot do without…and WE THANK THEM!

MARIE SLOTNICK

Marie was born in Detroit, raised in Oak Park, and graduated from Ferndale High School. After graduating from Western Michigan University, Marie entered a career as a high school English teacher, from which she is now retired. After retirement, she worked as an English instructor at Oakland Community College, which she found was an “easy fit.” Marie joined Beth Shalom in 1987 but had grown up here as her parents were founding members of the congregation. “I can’t imagine myself anywhere else.” After serving as President of Beth Shalom the past two years, Marie wants to make sure that there is a seamless leadership transition with no gaps. Therefore, “I do what needs to be done that no one else is doing.” Among those many tasks that she has chosen to undertake are: attending daily afternoon minyans and leading Ma’ariv, acting as Gabbai sheyni at Shabbat services and leading parts of the service, planning for Shabbat Kiddush and challah, planning for Kiddush luncheons, overseeing CBS Shabbat dinners, serving on ritual, programming, and membership committees, and representing the shul at funerals and shiva houses. Marie sees her volunteerism as a way to serve the congregation and get a better understanding of what’s going on. “It’s a YES place in my life. People can learn more when they participate more.” Marie says that her involvement makes her feel pretty good (most days). She recommends that members start getting involved with something they enjoy and are good at. “Get on a committee and your associations will broaden. One thing will lead to another. Beth Shalom is a welcoming and grateful shul.” Volunteer and be a part of who we are. WE ARE BETH SHALOM!
