BOOM BOOM - it's now a required cry whenever anyone mentions The College of Saint Basil the Great! Pencampwr was a highly successful event for both colleges. We ran two fundraiser lunches, coordi-nated by Lady Bettina of Saint Lazarus, and auctioned off slaves to members of the populace. The Combined Colleges War Unit looked excellent. We presented ourselves before the attending royalty and populace with the help of a clever war song composed by Lady Aoife. Completing the look of the war unit were three shields painted with the Saint Basils device, which won the prize for best shields! This month the college has more than proved that we can come together for a common goal and have a great time while doing it. We would like to thank everyone who was involved in making Pencampwr such a fantastic event!

Calling all Thespians, Singers, Dancers, Musicians and Fools! I, Lady Aoife, Bard of Aneala, have been called upon to provide An Entertainment at this year's Midwinter Feast. It will be an exciting and dramatic piece full of intrigue, mystery and adventure on the high seas. My vision is grand and so it follows I require the assistance of the populace in realis-ing it upon the stage. I seek performers of every age, in any performance discipline, with any experi-ence level, and also those wishing to work 'behind-the-scenes' in costume, properties, or sound. The only prerequisite for this production is a willingness to work together to create some magic. There will be several rehearsals between now and Midwinter and a costume and properties work-shop. If you are interested please write to me at [email protected] ASAP and I will send you more information.

For to Make Hosen By Mistress Catherine d’Arc These hose are suitable for both gentlemen and ladies. They are based on the pat-tern used for the London Hose dated to the late 14th century. They are suitable for ladies’ knee high hose throughout the SCA period, and mens’ hose until the 15th century when they began to wear joined hose.

Leg and foot pieces of hose from late Reconstruction of hose, 14th century deposits at Baynard’s Textiles & Clothing, Elisabeth Castle, London, Textiles & Clothing, Crowfoot, Frances Pritchard & Kay P188 Stanliand, Boydell Press, Woodbridge, 2002, p189 The Pattern The pattern looks complicated but it’s really just a series of simple measurements. Start at the top and work through the list. (cont’d next page)

If C is less than B, use B D Measure around the top of your thigh and divide by 2 a X divided by 3 b The distance from the floor to the place where you measured B c The distance from the floor to where you measured C d The distance from the floor to where you measured D Once you have all of your measurements, take a large piece of paper or fabric to make your pattern. Fold it in half. This fold will be the centre front of the leg piece. Mark the measurements a-d along the fold, then mark the measurements A-D at the correct level. Then simply join up the ends of the lines you have drawn. This should give you a roughly leg shaped pattern. On another piece of paper or fabric draw the line X, then draw x coming from the centre of it. Then mark the distance y and then draw the line Y centred on the line x. Once again, connect the ends of the lines. This piece should be roughly semicir-cular. To make ladies’ knee length hose, don’t bother with D or d. Do remember to add enough to the top of your hose to fold over your garters. 8-10cm should do it. If you are making men’s hose you may choose to taper the top of the hose so that they are lower at the back. This is fine for earlier period hose worn under longer tunics. If you wear shorter tunics then start with the back of the hose as high as you can to avoid showing too much underwear. If you are using nice stretchy wool do not bother to add a seam allowance. If you are using other fabrics, including stretch fabrics, add a seam allowance to every-where except the U shaped cutout at the bottom of the leg piece. (cont’d next page)

It will be easier to lay out your pattern if you cut two of each pattern piece. It is im-portant to get the pieces on the bias. This means laying each piece so that its centre line is at exactly 45 degrees to the edge of the fabric. This seems to work best even for stretch fabrics, since most stretch only in one direction. This pattern is a rough guide only. Every piece of fabric will stretch a little differ-ently. Cut one leg out, tack it together and fit it, then cut the second to match. Take care not to fit the ankle area so tightly that you cannot get your foot out of it. It is normal for this area to be a little baggy. The Sewing First sew the foot piece to the leg piece. If you use a sewing machine, use a small zig zag stitch. If you do it by hand, use backstitch. If you wish to finish the seam, do it now. I suggest pushing both seam allowances towards the toes. Next sew up the remaining seam which runs along the bottom of the foot piece and up the back of the leg piece. The hose will be more comfortable if you open the seam allowance and sew each side down. You can overcast or simply use a running stitch parallel to the seam. Do not be tempted to hem or overlock these edges, the added bulk will be uncomfortable. Since the pattern is cut on the bias, most edges will not fray much anyway. Finally, hem the top. In period wool fabric would have a single fold stitched down but I recommend a double folded hem as it is stronger. For ladies’ hose you may wish to hem to what might seem the wrong side because it is this side that will show when the tops of the hose are turned down. Ladies’ hose are held up by garters, strips of fabric or leather tied or buckled just above the calf muscle. For mens’ hose you will need to add a way to hold them up. You can sew on a tie or you can put a ball of scrap fabric behind the tie point and sew the surrounding fabric around it. This forms a little button that you can tie a string around from the belt. Note that these hose do NOT tie at waist level. They tie at the level at which the crease forms when you lift your knee. This is important because the distance from knee to that point does not change whether you are standing or sitting. The dis-tance from your knee to your waist does. You will need a cord or a belt to tie your hose to.
