Last week, the wilderness was a character in the Gospel reading. This week, we find a mountain and a cloud

featuring in the narrative.

For Jesus, the mountain is already a place of encounter with God, a place of prayer. Like Jesus and his companions, we too need the occasional glimpse of glory. We also need the good sense to follow through on the path that brings life, despite the pain. We can feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the challenges facing us and by the opposition we sometimes experience. If we are to hear the prophet-like-Moses in our times, we have to come to terms with the personal costs involved. SCHOOL WIDE EXPECTATIONS

Our SJV School-wide Expectations:

Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe Be a Learner

Value: Service

To “Be of Service” as described in the First Letter of Peter 4:10, asks each one of us to serve others through our thoughts, words and actions. This can be as simple as sharing a smile with someone through to giving up time to help someone in need. Both, St John Vianney and Nano Nagle, were devoted people of service.

Project Compassion

Thank you to the families who have already started to send in donations to support Caritas Australia through Project Compassion. This year the theme is ‘Give Lent 100% - Lives Change When We All give 100%’. Our Year 6 Catholic Identity Leaders will continue to collect the boxes from the classrooms for the next two weeks with the last collection scheduled for Thursday 4 April. Last year we raised $1,029 so this year we are aiming

to raise $1,250 or beyond! Over the last two weeks we have raised $527.

Have a wonderful week and may peace be with you.

LIBRARY

On Wednesday, a team of four Year 6 students competed in the International Kids Literature Competition held at Moreton Bay College. Students were quizzed on 10 diverse genres over 3 hours that both challenged and excited all competitors. There were twenty-six other teams, including a team of authors, who put themselves up for the challenge. We are so proud of our SJV team as they spent weeks preparing for the unknown books by reading and collaborating on what they had read. Dahl experts after winning the Roald Dahl quiz round on the day. Congratulations to Celeste, Elliette, Mischa and Chloe, an

amazing effort!!

One week to go! Next Thursday is the SJV Readers Cup competition and the twenty-one teams have been busy reading their set books, preparing for the big day. As with all challenges, this one has not been without its obstacles: lost books, a dog chewed book and missing team members. However, above all I have seen children happily talking

about books, reading and working together. Thursday is sure to be lots of fun!

As part of the World Science Festival at South Bank, this week on Saturday there are thirty free street science activities to enjoy. DNA collection from Wild Crocodiles, Blast Off to the Virtual Universe and the Hatchery: Turtle Conservation Experience were a few that caught my eye! Check out the website

if you are interested: https://www.worldsciencefestival.com.au

Book Club books are expected next week, thank you for your support this term.

Happy Reading!

GUIDANCE NEWS

Online safety basics - Advice for parents and carers Help your children safely navigate their digital world and educate them to avoid harmful online experiences. Explore websites, games, apps and social media together and set some rules. Your support and guidance can give your children the confidence to make sound decisions online — and ask for help when they need it. Kids (5 to 12) As children start to navigate the online world and interact with others more independently, they are more likely to be exposed to risks of bullying or unwanted contact, accidentally coming across inappropriate content or racking up bills through in-app purchases. Your guidance can help them be aware of the risks and understand what is expected of them. And let them know you are always there to support

them.

For kids aged 5 to 12, it is important to:

Keep the computer or device in an area of your home that can be supervised. And check in regularly with your child to see what they are

viewing.

Stay engaged with their online activity. If they agree, consider setting up your own accounts with the sites they use most so you can see how

they work and understand the risks.

Explore the online world with them to help establish that this is not just a solitary activity. Play games with them. Do a creative project

together. Think about social media readiness. Most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13. See are they old enough? Encourage respect and empathy. Teach them to avoid sharing or posting things that may upset others. See good habits start young. Start building resilience. Teach your child that there are ways they can deal with material that worries or frightens them. This includes immediately

telling you or another trusted adult of any concerns or uncomfortable material. See good habits start young.

Review your rules as your child grows older:

Be clear about how much time they can spend online, the apps they can use, the websites they can visit and what they can share or post

online.

Refer to our advice about time online and online gaming if these are of concern.

Technology tips for parents of kids 5 to 12:

Ensure your own devices are protected by a password or pin, so your child cannot accidentally come across inappropriate content.

If you are thinking about giving them their own tablet or smartphone, check out are they old enough?.

Use parental control tools appropriate for the age and experience of your child. Be upfront about this and get your child on board. Let them

know that these can be reviewed and changed as they get older and they continue to demonstrate responsible behaviour. Consider installing a ‘child-friendly’ search engine that will allow them to explore a limited number of sites. See taming the technology.
