Dear alumni, Friends and loyal Supporters,

how can it be that the 2011-12 school year has come to a close! Yet, as we blessed our 56th graduating Class, we were proud to have been a fundamental part of their spiritual as well as academic development.

we thank you for supporting us as we diligently search out ways to engage the students. this task has always been ours and so it is true in the 21st century. we strive at all times to be relevant and meaningful with our learning tools, determined and consistent in passing on a strong Catholic foundation based on gospel values.

on an ongoing basis we are trying to increase the funds that are available for families who otherwise could not afford a Catholic education for their children. approximately, 25% of our families are on some form of scholar-ship assistance. although we are grateful that the economy is improving, many of our families are newly employed, underemployed and have been left with the loss of a home and now high rents and bills. through your help, we have been able to award many of our children assistance through the SJV Scholarship Fund.

to add to a good year, the ongoing construction of the SJV Parish Community Center has afforded us with outside bathrooms across the street, new picnic/lunch tables and the promise of opening the gymnasium on august 4, the Feast of St. John Vianney. we will build and complete the Center as we raise the money. many of you have helped us with this project also realizing how beneficial the completion of this building will be to our educational venture.

we look forward to another school year well aware of the awesome charge and honor we have been given as teachers of these young hearts, minds and souls.

Enjoy the summer time and remember to pray for us as we do for you each day.

7Th AnnuAl Fund the 7th annual Fund brought in approximately $30k which is being used to award tuition assistance to families and also to upgrade our internal/external communication system.

when we receive donations to the annual fund drive, we know that these contributors understand how the finances work in a Catholic elementary school today where tuition certainly does not cover all the expenses in the operating budget. the benefits of a working long-range plan as well as gifts allocated to SJV School allow us to keep the tuition from escalating and to go beyond what is collected through tuition. we are cautious in our planning but very committed to providing a safe environment, relevant curriculum and qualified teachers and staff.

the annual funds keep us moving in these right directions.

the 8th annual Fund will be allocated to purchase new technologies for the staff as well as our children at every level. Preparing children for the future requires us to listen, study, experiment and then to make informed decisions regarding curricular needs.

thank you to all our alumni, families, and loyal supporters who allow us to continue to dream for our children. happily, we have included your names in this magazine as a sign of your support. Blessings to you!

Dear SJV,

I am attending Seattle university pursuing my undergraduate degree in business Economics. one of the core curriculum classes required by the business School is business Communications, where we learn how to properly address emails to clients and potential employers, how to construct resumes, and how to give presentations. In this class, we underwent a rigorous review of sentence structuring and correct grammar usage, and it is proving to be a pretty difficult topic for many of my classmates. while I definitely needed some review, I found that I knew quite a bit more than the average student in the class, and I attribute this to the lessons I received at SJV. Probably some of my strongest academic memories at SJV were with ms. brown and ms. buckley reviewing subjects, predicates and parts of speech. while at the time this seemed pretty menial, I have finally realized how important it will be in business Communications as I pursue a career. I hope SJV has

continued these lessons in the classroom, as I think it was something SJV did particularly well. I just wanted to share my appreciation of the lessons I still remember from elementary school. keep up the great work!

best, Jonathan Shales ‘06

along with studying business Economics, Jonathan is very active on campus. he is a research analyst for the Seattle university redhawk Fund, a group that manages a stock portfolio of over $300,000 of the trustee’s money. he works part-time as an office assistant to the Director of the university Core Curriculum. this summer he will be travelling to Europe with a few friends.

Dear SJV,

I am an undergraduate student at northeastern university in boston. right now I am spending the year in london, studying at the School of oriental and african Studies, an institution which specializes in the languages and cultures of asia, africa, and the middle East. this has been a phenomenal experience for me, and a wonderful opportunity to study with professors who are experts in their fields. the student body is comprised of approximately 40% internation-al students, so I have been able to make some great friendships with people from all over the world.

one of the things that I took away from my twelve years of Catholic education was a sense of the impor-tance of religion in people’s lives - the inseparability of their faith and their experiences. I have always thought that to really understand people, you need to understand their faith as well. learning about people has always fascinated me, and this led me to a double major in Cultural anthropology and religious Studies.

I have always felt that my time at St. John Vianney was also the start of my deep commitment to community service. Since then, I have always been involved in service work. I have also had some amazing opportunities to work with non-profit organizations that provide reproductive health services around the world, such as Pathfinder International.

next year will be my final year at northeastern university, and from there, hopefully I’ll be on to graduate school. I’m just looking forward to seeing what comes next!

a big part of building relationships here at SJV is through the example of faculty and staff. many of our teachers have started their relationship with SJV as parents or even as alumni. these teachers know all too well the significance of SJV values in the lives of our students.

Kristine Everett ’72 garman has been a math teacher at SJV for seven years. of course, before that, she was an SJV parent and even before that she was an SJV student herself!

mrs. garman enrolled her sons Kenneth ’05 and Jeffrey ’11 because she knew first hand the values she received. as an alum, she wanted to give her sons the SJV experience. She felt that SJV “reinforces everything you want for them” in their growing up. She knew they would learn the same values she did and they would have the same good foundation she received. today she already sees their strong work ethic and commitment to service as a direct result of their years at SJV. now that the boys are graduated, mrs. garman loves that the three of them share the bond of having attended the same k -8 school.

kenneth is at uC Santa Cruz and majoring in Computer Science and will graduate in 2013. Jeffrey just finished his freshman year at bellarmine. Jeffrey returns to SJV whenever possible to help fulfill his volunteer hours and enjoys tutoring SJV students.

another devoted teacher is kathleen Sciba. mrs. Sciba is not only a parent of an SJV alumni, Chris Sciba ’86, but also a proud SJV grandparent of Madison Sciba ’16 and Grady Sciba ‘18! recently, she has stepped back into her career of teaching and taken on several long-term sub positions for SJV. mrs. Sciba has found that being at SJV has “rejuvenated” her and that it “feels right” to be here. She credits the sense of family and focus on values to SJV’s ability to pull her out of retirement.

mrs. Sciba likes the way values are “front and center” at SJV. She sees how values are present throughout every academic subject and how they foster the student’s sense of community and participation in service.

of course, mrs. Sciba is quick to add that she also enjoys volunteering as a grandparent with grady and madeline!

It just goes to show… once a Viking, always a Viking!

mRs. diAnnA AlBeRT And “WhAT’s neW?” in ROOm 306!

as we all know, technology is integrated into the daily lives of a majority of our students, so we must capitalize on this to move them forward in today’s educational environment. we are prepar-ing students for jobs that have not yet been created. these students will most likely be creating their own careers. So, this means we must give them three very fundamental skills: the abilities to think, apply what they have learned, and socialize effectively. technology is going to be our key in providing these skills to our students.

Here is how I am using technology in Room 306:when we read stories in class, we use google •

Earth to locate the exact location and make observations about the terrain, climate and communities.

Students use Powerpoint to create presentations • about what they have learned including inserting pictures, videos, and setting the backgrounds. also, we have learned word, keyboarding skills, and Excel. as a former project manager for Cisco Systems I am able to bring these skills into the classroom.

my business skills also have helped me to further • develop our class web pages. we have segmented them into myhomework (web sites we use for homework) and myClasswork (websites we use in class). these sites are updated weekly so that parents and students have easy access to web sites I have previewed and know are safe and kid-friendly.

Students are learning how to effectively use • project planning skills through www.edmodo. this is a tool where I can communicate with each student individually about what they need to work on. also, they can communicate with me when they need help. this helps support an individualized education for each child. Effectively, each student can be assigned their own individual work. Students are definitely being prepared for the future.

— DIAnnA ALBERT, 3RD GRADE TEACHER

mR. gARY FeRRARO And “WhAT’s neW” in mATh!

new trends come and go, however, using technology to enhance the learning opportunities for students is not a trend. on the contrary, with new technologies consistently in the hands of this generation, St. John Vianney School’s adminis-tration and teachers are all about keeping pace with what is most beneficial for this generation of student to maximize their learning. Interactive websites, laptops, Smartboards, digital projectors, ebooks and docu-ment readers are some examples of what various students and teachers are cur-rently using in the classroom. Immediate plans are being made to include IPads and other technologies in efforts to keep pace with 21st century learning.

khan academy, learn360, Edmodo, mathlicious, mathletics, Project based learning and reading a to z are a sampling of websites that provide teach-ers and students the ability to harness the power of digital learning to improve educational outcomes.

mathlicious provides teachers with materials to teach math using real world • topics. mathletics provides individual instruction and practice with math concepts while competing with students throughout the world.

Edmodo provides classrooms a safe and easy way to connect and collaborate • a real-time platform to exchange ideas, and a forum to share content and access homework, grades and school notices.

learn360 is an interactive media-on-demand service for k-12 teachers and • students that addresses the unique learning styles of individual students through multimedia formats while fully incorporating differentiated learning into the curriculum.

khan academy is a global classroom enabling students to learn at their own • pace. Students can make use of the extensive video library, practice exercises and complete assessments from any computer with web accessibility.

teachers and students are truly engaged in the learning process.

this year’s SJV artists and authors’ Fair was a multi-media event showing art work, literature and writing pieces from the students. In the seventh and eighth grades, the display took on a museum approach where visitors strolled through an art gallery and also took in an eye catching rolling slideshow of students’ art work. In addition, samples of writing projects and students hosting readings of their stories, book reports or poems delighted all who were present. In one classroom, children and parents participated in a project inspired by not a box (please see photos) — looks like they had fun!

a feeling of excitement permeated the classrooms and hallways as parents, students and friends “oohed” and “aahed” over the sculptures, drawings, masks and writing projects.

Sweet Success! the team successfully achieves the challenge!

Congratulations to Jarylynn De guzman, Jayel ambat, Diana tran and Priscilla Castro, better known as “team rock n roll rumblers” and winners of the 2012 San Jose museum tech Challenge! these young fifth grade girls rose to the challenge and achieved great success through their dedication, passion, and lots of trial and error!

this year’s tech Challenge, “Shake, rattle, and rescue” challenged young innovators to create a solution to help earthquake survivors. their device, after an earthquake severely damages a bridge, had to reach and rescue a person stranded on the bridge.

“team rock n roll rumblers” competed with 363 different teams. this chal-lenge was the first competition the girls entered. their coach, Jhune ambat, remarked, “they were awesome! they had a great time working as a team.” along with “team rock n roll rumblers”, St. John Vianney School was also represented by three other teams.

Sr. michele anne commented, “Since one of our Student learning Expecta-tions challenges us to develop critical thinking skills in our students, we were proud that the girls landed best overall Solution to the problem. In addition, we are making an effort to encourage our girls to step forward more notice-ably in the areas of science and math.”

SJV is very proud of all of our participants and we are already looking forward to tech Challenge 2013!

cRAB Feedthe SJV 2012 Crab Feed was rad! It was a totally awesome ‘80s themed event with lots of big hair, neon colors and a few surprises.

no surprise was that Co-Chairs, John murphy and andrea Formosa, long-time committee members, took over the event this year and it was a success. of course, a big thanks goes to all the committee members and all the dedicated volunteers. they set up the hall, prepared the food and left no detail unattended.

the most entertaining surprise was the Flash mob performance by the 8th grade servers! they prac-ticed tirelessly in the days leading up to the Crab Feed and enjoyed performing for family and friends. will we see this again next year? You will have to buy tickets next year and find out!

of course, the real treat of the evening was the auc-tion and watching the bidding wars! those paddles were flying thanks to auctioneer Doug rose and the generous (and slightly competitive!) donors. thanks to all who contributed!

St. John Vianney School children sent invitations to alumni, parishioners and parents in the medical field to honor them with a special assembly and blessing. Doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, lab techni-cians, and medical assistants came to celebrate and be honored for their service and commitment to care for others. lavender oil was used to bless their palms, “lord god, give this person courage and hope as they minister to others.” the honorees spoke about their service, which included work in local hospitals, dentist offices, urgent care clinics, labs, pharmacies, optical care, convalescent homes, homecare and even someone who manufactured parts for orthopedists.

eVening OF

Gratitudewith deep appreciation, Sr. michele anne and martha wood hosted an “Evening of gratitude” with a dinner at the San Jose Country Club for the many persons who have made signficant gifts to St. John Vianney School in the past year. In the name of all the students of SJV, these people were honored for how they have invested in the education of current and future students. the evening included some friends whose children graduated many years ago and who continue to give generously to Catholic education. again, we say thank You!

Mystery Photo

thank you to laurain Distefano beiriger ’62 for writing in and telling us about this photo, “Queen and attendants, 1959”. laurain explains, “these pictures were taken prior to the SJV Parade that was the start of each Fiesta. we became Queen and attendants based on the amount of raffle tickets sold by our families and friends in our names.” She also includes some information on the names of those in the photo.

Front row from the left: unknown; kathy Dwyer (Daughter of george Dwyer); unknown; first name unknown, but last name is gurza (younger sister of agustin gurza)

back row from the left: unknown; laurain Distefano (now beiriger); Elizabeth riker; first name unknown, but last is Crews (I believe oldest daughter of marshall & Doris Crews); unknown

Vikings, please check out our new mystery Photo! who are these students? what is the activity? any information you have, please let us know! Please email Deirdre mellon-reyes or call the school ([email protected] or 258-7677).
