Dear Friends,

It is a privilege to share with you the Saint John Vianney College Seminary Annual Report for 2018. This was a year of significant growth for our men and this institution – spiritually, intellectually, pastorally and financially. I am humbled by those who make Saint John Vianney (SJV) a priority in their annual giving. Your generosity directly benefits the men who are discerning a call to the priesthood. One day, we will all reap the rewards of their “yes” as they serve our families, parishes and dioceses well into the future.

Formation at SJV is possible because of the commitment and generosity of our friends and benefactors. In return, we are prayerfully and faithfully committed to being good stewards of the gifts you have shared with us.

In this report, it is my pleasure to feature Alex Lorang, a seminarian from the Diocese of Joliet. Alex began at SJV as a wide-eyed freshman with a heart for the Lord. As he prepares to graduate in May, he will leave our campus as a well-formed, confident gentleman who is sure of himself and sure of God’s plan for his life. His human and holy transformation is a result of regular prayer, self-examination, service, academic rigor and fraternity, the hallmarks of formation here. Alex represents his brother seminarians who are ready to serve the Church and our world. Thank you for making this formation possible for Alex and for all of the young men at SJV, who earnestly seek the Lord’s will in their lives.

St. John Paul II considered the formation of future priests “one of the most demanding and important tasks for the future of the evangelization of humanity.” Thank you for participating in this most demanding and important task.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Reverend Michael C. BeckerRector

Q What has been the biggest blessing of your formation at SJV?A The biggest blessing has been getting to meet so many amazing priests who exemplify the priesthood to me.

Q What has been the biggest surprise from your formation at SJV?A The biggest surprise has been learning how desperately I need God's grace in my life.

Q What will you miss the most about SJV?A The people. I will find good schooling elsewhere, and I will find new walls to call home. But I cannot replace the relationships I have formed here.

Q What gifts will you take with you after graduation?A The knowledge of how to pray, the ability to love people as they are, the knowledge that I am a beloved son of God and the ability to see myself as God sees me.

Q What is a favorite memory as a college seminarian?A All of my best memories from SJV have involved being in the chapel in prayer. The greatest healing, the greatest peace, and the greatest joys of my time in college seminary took place in the chapel with Jesus.

Q What would you tell a young man who is thinking about entering college seminary?A You cannot lose by going to seminary. Whether you go all the way and get ordained or discern another vocation, you will be a better man because of your time in seminary.

One Man’s StoryAlex LorangSeniorDiocese of Joliet, Illinois

I grew up Catholic with two loving parents, two older sisters, a younger sister, and a younger brother. We would say prayers before meals, go to Mass on Sunday, and pray the rosary during long trips. Faith was something we did as a family, but it was never something that I made my own.

All of that changed very suddenly when I was 11 years old. My family was in a terrible car accident, and my sister, Aimee, passed away. I learned two valuable lessons that day: life is short, and I needed to start thinking about what I would do with mine.

Because of the accident, I began caring a lot more about my faith. It was this care that really prepared me for my Confirmation, one of the first times in my life that I remember truly being aware of the presence of God.

The summer of that same year, I met a seminarian for the first time, and in our short conversation, this young man simply told me he would pray for me. That was the most powerful point of our conversation. Here was a 20-year-old who said he would pray for me, and he meant it. I remember praying that night, “Lord, if this is something you want me to do, help me to do it.”

My time at Saint John Vianney College Seminary has been amazing. It has been a source of great joy and, at times, trial. It has been a time of great peace, grace, and healing as the Lord has worked in my life. And when it comes down to it, I still feel very strongly that God is calling me to be His priest. But even if I don’t become a priest, my time at SJV was still worth it. I will look back and know college seminary was one of the most important and formative times in my life.

Lord, if this is something you want me to do, help me to do it.
