THE USAA SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
1. Exploratory research on the Mamanua and Manobo as well as school costs
2. Established criteria for selection of the scholar
3. Identified scholars
4. Created the brochure and powerpoint presentation
5. Web posting
WHAT THE COMMITTEE HAS DONE SO FAR:
Candidate must:
• Be 100% full-blooded Mamanua/Manobo
• Be native and resident of Surigao Norte/Surigao Sur
• Come from a poor or indigent family
• Be in good health
• Have no record of any disciplinary action in school or in the community
• Submit certification of good moral character from his/her high school

CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF THE SCHOLAR
Candidate must:
• Submit his/her report cards for 3rd year and 4th year, up to the 3rd quarter
• Submit 2 recommendation letters from his/her English and Math teachers
• Write an essay on why he/she wants to go to college and, after graduation, what he/she would like to do for his/her tribe
• Be willing to do at least 2 years of service to his tribe after graduation
• Do an interview with the USAA’s designated representative.
CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF THE SCHOLAR
•18 years old
•Youngest of 2 children
•Father: Cain Hukman—a farmer and the tribe’s dakula
• Mother: Bebiana Yubos—a housekeeper
• High school graduate (March 2003)
• Attended leadership seminars in Butuan, Agusan
•She wants to become a teacher
• Tribe: Cantogas of the Lake Mainit Area
THE USAA MAMANUA SCHOLAR:
GINA Y. HUKMAN
•17 years old
•Eldest child
•Father: Lucas T. Gardigo—a rice farmer
•Mother: Cecilia Gardigo--deceased
• High school graduate (March 2003)
• 3rd honors of her graduating class
•She wants to become a teacher
• Tribe: Carromata, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur
