A Very Warm Welcome to Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School

This is a school where we nurture creative, curious and independent learners. The school offers enormous opportunity for you to find your path to success and fulfillment through the many avenues

of growth and learning. Wherever you have come from, arriving at Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School gives you the opportunities to stretch your wings and find your own place in our friendly and nurturing community.

Our committed, highly trained staff are here to support you on your quest for excellence, giving you the firm foundation for a bright future rooted in our tradition of broad deep learning and a curriculum enriched with a range of inspiring opportunities, equipping you to face life’s challenges and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Whilst healthy competition is central to the CSGS ethos there are also many opportunities for pupils to enter into the wider life of the school. Service to the school and community is enthusiastically performed and high levels of leadership and responsibility are actively taken on by pupils at all levels. There is a supreme belief that building the CSGS tradition of excellence comes not from dwelling on yesterday’s successes but performing tomorrow’s tasks.

Our academic success is matched by the grounds and facilities that we offer. As you will see from the pictures both within the prospectus and videos on our website, we have a vast and beautiful set of grounds which not only feel welcoming but offer opportunities for sport, art, drama and technology with purpose built computer rooms, drama and recording studios, a brand new lecture theatre, a purpose built Sixth Form Centre (Legacy Building, which was once at the Olympic Park in 2012) and an inspiring Art and Technology block (named after Quentin Blake, an Old Sedcopian). CSGS truly offers opportunities for all of your interests and seeks to nurture them throughout your time in the school.

As well as working on achieving top results, developing the character of our students is now a firmly established feature of the school. Commitment, resilience, fairness and responsibility, courage, intellectual curiosity, creativity and gratitude are essential for success in CSGS and life beyond.

Above all this is a school that wants the very best for you and expects the very best you can give - to help you find a sense of place and belonging but also a real sense of real purpose and meaning. We want to help you find what your talents are, and dedicate time and expert help to turning your potential into real progress with the highest possible expectation. The excellence we cherish lies in your effort and enjoyment. Working together, we will ensure you grow and thrive, giving you the brightest chance of future success and fulfilment with a life-long love of learning fit for all life’s challenges. Just imagine what you could achieve - and we’ll be here to help you.

Leaders of Tomorrow

At CSGS, we pride ourselves on creating intellectually curious, well-informed, compassionate and socially responsible citizens who will go on to assume important positions of influence. The fact that many of our former students have gone on to become national and international leaders in their chosen fields of excellence proves the success of our mission statement:

“ Helping the learners of today become the leaders of tomorrow.”

In lessons, we encourage our students to think for themselves so that they develop the critical and analytical skills, as well as creativity and resilience that they will need when they leave us and enter the next stage of their academic or professional career. Our staff excel in creating dynamic and stimulating lessons that stretch and challenge even the most able of students while offering support and help when needed. Strong leadership requires confidence in one’s abilities - and that is exactly what we hope to instil in our students by encouraging them to take ownership over their own learning and develop the independent spirit and intellectual curiosity that we, as a school, value most highly.

Beyond the classroom, we also provide a wealth of enrichment opportunities to nurture the personal development and leadership skills that we think are essential to good citizenship and the future of our young people - and which, importantly, are also great fun!

As a school, we pride ourselves on striking the balance between fostering academic excellence and ensuring character enrichment and personal development. You will leave our school not only extensively prepared for adult life but also ready to lead and inspire others, actively shaping not only your own future but also the future of the society and community in which you live and work.

Curriculum and Careers

Curriculum

Our aim is to provide students a high quality, broad and ambitious education that prepares them for the modern world enabling them to become the leaders of tomorrow. We aim to ensure that our students have the opportunity to enjoy, work hard and succeed, both in the curriculum and in enrichment areas and that they are well prepared to be happy, successful and engaged members of their local, national and global communities. We wish to engender intellectual curiosity within our students to enable them to fulfil their potential.

What subjects do we offer at Key Stage 3?

Key Stage 4

In Years 10 and 11, students may concentrate on certain subjects and choose as options the ones they most enjoy within the prescribed limits of the National Curriculum. All students commence courses leading to 10 full GCSEs and will achieve the EBacc. Our results are consistently excellent.

Key Stage 5

The highly successful Sixth Form at Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School offers an extremely broad choice of A Level subjects. At present, all pupils study 3 or 4 subjects to A Level and also take an enrichment subject. In addition, there is a very rich programme of sporting and extra-curricular activities. There is ample opportunity for pupils to engage in charitable and voluntary work as well take up positions of responsibility within the school. Most of our Sixth-formers enter Higher Education when they leave school, though some take up a higher level apprenticeship or employment.

CareersThe unrivalled excellence of our careers service was recognised when we became one of the few schools in the country to be awarded the prestigious Quality in Careers Standard and when our Careers Co-ordinator won the national Apprenticeship Champion award for the London Region. Our outstanding careers service ensures that we equip our students with the skills and knowledge they will need to excel in their chosen fields. We have an extremely experienced Careers Co-ordinator who organises Careers Education throughout the school, as well a team of external careers staff who provide guidance and counselling, not to mention special parents’ evenings at critical points in students’ time at the school to prepare for the next stage in their lives.

Aims and Provision for Sport and Performance

Here at CSGS our commitment to nurturing the interests and abilities of all our students is highly evident in the many and varied opportunities that we have beyond the classroom.

SportA healthy mind and a healthy body go together to form a winning combination for a bright future and at CSGS we celebrate healthy competition and individual achievement as well as building strong teams that train together, work together and share in each other’s success. As you may be aware here at CSGS we have a local, regional and national reputation for sporting excellence, one that we are particularly proud of. A strong focus is placed on competitive sport against other institutions and students are able to represent the school when selected. We are often taken aback by the talent that our students demonstrate alongside their clear commitment to the school and the sport that they are interested in. It must be made clear though that alongside our top teams who can go on to compete at national level, we do also have opportunities to take part in sport at all levels and engaging with and enjoying sport is of paramount importance to us.

The school is fortunate to possess outstanding external facilities in our vast grounds with dedicated rugby pitches, cricket square, a 4G astro pitch as well as floodlit netball courts. Our indoor facilities also include a dance studio and a fitness suite. We also have opportunities for students to play table tennis, handball, basketball, hockey, football and even croquet. Ensuring that we help students to flourish in whatever sport they are interested in is certainly at the heart of what we do.

To ensure that we are playing our part in this not only do we have highly skilled staff within our PE department but we also enlist the support of high quality coaches to support our students fully whether that be in rugby, netball, hockey or any other sport where our students are competing at a high level.

“ My favourite subject is definitely PE. We learn a variety of sport in lessons and also have clubs for almost any sport to get more involved in what we enjoy.”Year 10 Pupil

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

“ The curriculum is enhanced by an extensive and inspiring range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities.”Ofsted

PerformanceOur drama and music performances also have an outstanding reputation with opportunities for students to be involved; whether it be centre stage, helping in the stage management, lighting or costume design, we encourage students to find their interest and talent and our aim is to make performance in the school relevant, inclusive and challenging, so much so that many of our students move into these fields of study in the next stage of their education after CSGS. The annual drama, dance and music productions are always slick and inspiring, if not sometimes a little moving! The passion that both our students and staff show is second to none.

We also have the facilities to support these areas with purpose built recording studio, dance studio and drama studios and a full lighting and sound system.

When it comes to Music we have many ensembles and opportunities to be involved in from choirs to rock bands and anything in between. There is also the opportunity to have individual music lessons here at CSGS to cater for your own personal development as well.

“ This school offers amazing opportunities, from innovative new clubs, to state-of-the-art science facilities, you’d be a fool not to take them!”Pupil

Wider OpportunitiesThe school possesses a wealth of opportunity outside the normal classroom and working day. Clubs include Jazz Group, Choir, School Orchestra, Drama, Computing, Debating, Maths, Chemistry, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Young Enterprise, CORE, Eco Club and a large number of sporting clubs throughout the week. In recent years the school has won the Young Enterprise Competition both locally and regionally and we are the largest and most successful Duke of Edinburgh centre in the South East.

There are a large number of school journeys organised as part of the curriculum. Regular visits take place to Germany and France as well as an adventure trip to Spain and an annual ski trip. There have also been visits to the Rhineland, Switzerland, Iceland, New York, Italy, Greece as well as a myriad of day visits.

The school has a Charity Committee run by the Sixth Form who are actively involved in raising money for charitable causes which is also an area that Key Stage 3 students are engaged in with projects being developed from their Skills for Life lessons. Our students also work closely with Marlborough School and assist there on a regular basis. As always our students demonstrate a clear commitment to helping others and this sense of community is something that we are very proud of.

We know starting a new school can be a big step and here at CSGS we have put many steps in place to support both our students and parents.

Pastoral WelfareTo ensure that students get the level of support that they need we have Tutor Groups and Heads of Learning to support each year group. We also have a House System which gives CSGS a true community feel. As the House system is a vertical system, it helps our students to make connections and friendships across year groups and is part of our reward system for many competitions run in school, which range from debating to sports competitions to DT showcases and many others in between.

Our House System also feeds into our pupil voice with representatives from all year groups meeting together in order to discuss key issues and feeding back directly to the Senior Leadership Team. CSGS values the views of students and they are consulted on key issues or changes and have impacted significant improvements to the school environment and policies.

SEND Provision CSGS values all of our students and we have a supportive and proactive approach for students with Special Education Needs. We have a dedicated SEND Team to support students both within lessons and in our Learning Support Centre and ensure that teaching caters to students’ needs as well as offering an encouraging environment that gives students the opportunity to flourish.

General Technology and Cloud CSGS engages fully with technology and not only do we use this in all lessons and set assignments via Microsoft Teams but we also provide access to any software that our students need to use at home as well as in school and provide a cloud network of storage to ensure that our students are not limited or prevented from engaging fully with their education.

ParentsWe endeavour to work with parents and keep them informed with the progress of their son or daughter and pride ourselves on working closely with parents, using technology to do this where appropriate. We also have a very active Parents’ Association, which not only offers support and its own sense of community among the parents but is also outstanding in fundraising for the school and this has resulted in a high standard of equipment and resources being provided.
