News from the Port Albert Mechanics Institute!

With a new Committee of Management commencing in June, things have been really hectic! Plans are being made and changes are underway! With the halls both looking a little drab at the moment the Committee are currently running through maintenance and looking at some ways to bring back some beauty to the outside!

August sees us having the floor in the large hall cleaned and resealed. This will have the hall closed for 2 weeks but the floor will look amazing!

This month our Committee has taken a leap and applied for funding from the Community Assistance Grants to purchase new chairs. If we are successful we will have new, beautiful chairs, all looking the same, light weight and stackable - Yay!

Our new Photocopier arrived this week and we are all so excited! In 2016 we were invited to apply for a volunteer grant and were successful! Our gorgeous new Photocopier is now living in the office of the Hall and ready for use. It is available to anyone in the community to use for a small price, please contact us for pricing. All proceeds go back into purchasing toner and paper. We will have a price list ready and available in the next couple of weeks.

Don't forget you can hire either hall for any occasion, contact us for prices!

Letter to the Editor To the editor,I have read the Tattler and also read the article on the front page of the Yarram Standard.  I decided I needed to write to you to express a very different opinion to that expressed in both publications, about the proposed improvements to fishing facilities in Port Albert.

I feel the statement about fisherpeople not spending money in the town was not accurate.  I have been fishing here for over 20 years and had a property here for just over 10. I know many many people who travel to Port Albert, and fish from Port Albert.  I am a member of the Thorpdale and District Angling Club, and I have also consulted with the South Gippsland Game Fishing Club about the statements made re fisherpeople not spending money in town. They both fully support the much needed changes to the facilities.

Our members make a point of filling up here both boat and car, as do many other boats and cars that I see pulled up at the General Store.  They buy bait here, they buy raffle tickets and egg and bacon sandwiches whenever the

Coast Guard are at the ramp.  They rent local properties in Port Albert to stay for the weekend, often eating at Wildfish, Custom Inn and the General Store Cafe(when it was open at night).  They get take away before heading home after fishing, if they are not staying the night.  We have even had members stay at the newly refurbished Motel since it was opened in January.  I am sure we are not the only fishing club make these types of contributions to the Port Albert community.

I also know members who intentionally avoid coming to Port Albert to fish, because of the lack of fish cleaning facilities and the congestion at the ramp.  They pay to go to Welshpool and buy their take away and bait from Welshpool, and fuel up at Alberton or Yarram instead of Port Albert.

I think the lack of attendance at the recent PAPA feedback session is an indication that people are quite happy with the proposed changes, although agree that further contribution to the design would still be appreciated.  The survey held by the Wellington Shire seems to be an accurate reflection of the opinions of fellow ratepayers I spoke with at the July beers by the bay,  held at the hall.  At least two of the business’s in town I have spoken with, also support the changes and agree that fisherpeople spend money in our town, whether they stay for the weekend or just fish for the day.  People I know who visit, and spend money in our town, love Port Albert for both it’s historical background, accommodation of various types,  and also for it’s amazing fishing opportunities regardless of your fishing skill levels, or experience.

The plan proposed may not be exactly what we all want,  but once the investment has been made we can then see if we can influence change, rather than lose the money entirely, and risk having it spent in another location. My understanding is this is not shire funding rather it is Fisheries funding to be spent on fishing, the shire are also contributing some funding to make the project a success.  If we don’t take advantage of these funds they will likely go to another town.  We need to take the common sense approach,  and do what we can, with the funding provided, and improve Port Albert facilities for existing fisherpeople, and perhaps attract a few more.

Any infrastructure improvement to our beautiful town has to be good news. We should make the most of all opportunities that come up,  if the majority of community supports it. My experience when talking to locals, and some business’s about this particular issue,  has been a huge support for the investment.

Regards,Jenny Smith
