The Foundation Awards Over $641,400 in December 2011 Grants The Summit Foundation/Vail Resorts Echo Grants made to four local nonprofits SPRING 2012 At its December Board of Trustees meeting, The Summit Foundation Board of Trustees allocated $641,414 in grant awards to 52 nonprofit agencies providing services in Summit, Grand, Park, and Lake Counties through 57 grant awards. “The Foundation is honored to dedicate such significant funding to nonprofit organizations providing critical services and working to enhance our mountain communities,” said Maureen Westerland, Co-Chair of The Summit Foundation Grants Committee. “During this grant cycle, the review committee stressed support for agencies providing basic needs for individuals and families as many local families are enduring greater challenges given this difficult economy,” noted Phyllis Martinez, Co-Chair of The Summit Foundation Grants Committee. The Summit Foundation specifically partnered with Vail Resorts Echo on grants totaling nearly $44,000 to four nonprofit organizations including Summit County Social Services, Summit Education Foundation, Early Childhood Options and Summit Prevention Alliance. Many of The Foundation’s grant awards are possible due to generous contributions made by our local ski areas, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Copper Mountain Resort and Vail Resorts, through their annual donation of transferable ski privileges which result in over $800,000 in contributions to The Foundation each year. The 2011 Fall grant awards were made to seven more organizations and programs than the allocations made in Fall 2010. 45 percent of the grants awarded went to 20 health and human service agencies and programs that received $286,799. Twelve organizations offering educational programs and services received $155,380. Eight art and culture organizations received a total of $52,500. Two environmental organizations received a combined total of $4,500. $14,735 was awarded to four nonprofit sports and recreation organizations. In addition, The Foundation presented $29,500 to eight nonprofit organizations responsible for programs or projects in Grand, Park and Lake Counties. Special Initiative grants totaling $98,000 went to two programs. Grants were awarded from The Foundation and several donor advised funds including The Eileen & Paul Finkel Advised Fund, Follett Advised Fund, The Keltner Family Fund, The Millisor Family Fund, The Lenzmeier/Williams Advised Fund, Summit Association of Realtors Charitable Fund, and The Jack and Pat Thomas Advised Fund. At its December Board of Trustees meeting, The Summit Foundation Board of Trustees allocated $641,414 in grant awards to 52 nonprofit agencies providing services in Summit, Grand, Park, and Lake Counties through 57 grant awards.

Many of The Foundation’s grant awards are possible due to generous contributions made by our local ski areas, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Copper

Mountain Resort and Vail Resorts, through their annual donation of transferable ski privileges which result in over $800,000 in contributions to The Foundation each year.

The Summit Foundation was pleased to be among the 928 nonprofit organizations participating in the second annual Colorado Gives Day, held in early December. Thanks to the support of 41 donors, The Summit Foundation received just over $27,500 in contributions made through the GivingFirst program at Community First Foundation. Included in this figure is $650 that was distributed proportionally to The Foundation as a “boost” from the FirstBank Incentive Fund.

During the 36 hour giving period, Coloradans contributed more than $12.3 million. The addition of the FirstBank Incentive Fund of $300,000 and Bonus Bucks of $36,000 helped Community First Foundation distribute over $12.7 million to 928 nonprofits.

Community First Foundation has made great efforts to strengthen and support Colorado’s nonprofit community. The Foundation received a grant which covers credit card and bank processing fees applied to each transaction. This grant allows 100 percent of contributions made on Colorado Gives Day to go directly to the chosen nonprofits.

As a registered agency with GivingFirst, The Summit Foundation is now eligible to receive contributions throughout the year through givingfirst.org/summitfoundation. These contributions will also not incur credit card processing fees, so your entire donation directly benefits the nonprofit organizations and students which we serve.

Board of Trustee ProfileTom Keltner

High School sweethearts from Van Wert, Ohio, Tom and Nancy Keltner have been married for over 43 years. Both Nancy and Tom earned their undergraduate degrees from Ohio University. Tom then joined the U.S. Navy and spent four years serving on submarines. After the Navy, the couple moved to California where Tom earned an MBA at Stanford Business School. Following work with Marriott, Holiday Inn, Promus Hotel Corporation and Hilton Hotels, Tom retired from Hilton as CEO of Americas and Global Brands in 2008.

In 2002, the Keltners purchased a condo in Frisco and fell in love with our mountain community. Colorado’s central location, Summit County’s beauty, easy commute to Denver and wonderful skiing made the decision easy. During 2007 and 2008, they built a home in Three Peaks and have been permanent residents since.

Just before moving to Summit County, the Keltners established a family foundation to support children and education. That same year, the Keltners were introduced to The Summit Foundation and The Foundation’s newly formed pre-collegiate program. Through The Summit Foundation, the couple learned of Family & Intercultural Resource Center’s Family United Program. This program supports pre-school age kids and parents through classes, support groups, resources and scholarships; another great fit for the Keltners. At the end of 2009, Tom and Nancy established a Donor Advised Fund with The Summit Foundation to direct a portion of their Family Foundation’s funds to these two programs and others in the future.

Tom was elected to The Summit Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2011 and notes it’s been a pleasure to become more involved with the organization that has such significant impact in our community.

Though they have only called Summit County home for four years, the Keltners philanthropic efforts are making long-lasting impacts in our community.

In December 2011, Wayne Brunetti announced his retirement from The Summit Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Since joining the Board in January 2008, Wayne has been an instrumental member of the Development Committee and chaired the Board Development Committee in 2011. We will miss Wayne’s commitment to The Foundation and his counsel and wisdom, but look forward to his continued involvement.

In January 2012, The Summit Foundation welcomed three new Trustees, Wally Ducayet, Michael Schilling and Wendy Wolfe.

Wally is a retired CPA, formerly with PricewaterhouseCoopers, and has lived in Breckenridge with his wife Maggie for the last eight years. He volunteers for the Breckenridge Music Festival, Breckenridge Heritage Alliance, Summit in Honduras and St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Mike Schilling is President of Valdoro Development, LLC and he and his wife Jen have been in Summit County for 12 years. Mike volunteers for several local organizations including the Sheriff’s Advisory Committee, Breckenridge Resort Chamber and he recently co-chaired the Breckenridge organizing committee for the 2011 Pro Cycling Challenge.

Wendy is President of Wolfe, Inc. and has lived in Breckenridge for 16 years. Her husband Jack is a former Trustee of The Summit Foundation. In recent years, Wendy has volunteered with the Breck 150 Committee, Early Childhood Options, as well as Summit Medical Center Health Foundation. She is currently active with Breckenridge Heritage Alliance and Summit Huts Association’s Backcountry Ball.

We still offer a downloadable and printable document for those that prefer the older method (but it will require 25 copies when submitted). Both types of applications are accessible through The Summit Foundation’s website. You may also stop by our office in Breckenridge for an application. Any organization planning on submitting a grant request to The Foundation must use a current application form.

First time applicants are asked to contact The Summit Foundation’s Executive Director, Lee Zimmerman, at 970.453.5970 to discuss the organization and intended proposal prior to submitting a grant request.

On January 9th, 2012, Amazing Grace Natural Eatery in Breckenridge held a day of Good at the Grace to benefit The Summit Foundation. Owner Monique Merrill and employees, Kate Lapides and Jen Schilling, donated all tips and their staff time for the day. Net revenue brought in just over $1,500 for The Foundation. Staff members from The Summit Foundation and new Trustee Mike Schilling were on hand to answer questions and educate diners on The Foundation.

“Our commitment to our customers extends beyond their palates. We’re also passionate about creating a warm, authentic gathering space for our community, as well as extending our support to the good work they do in

the world,” explains Monique. In order to spread goodness beyond the plate, in 2009 the employees started Good at the Grace by choosing to donate all net revenue from one day of business to a local cause or philanthropist.

The Summit Foundation is grateful to be added to the list of Good at the Grace recipients. Funds from the January day will be added to available grant funding. Thanks to Monique Merrill and the generous staff of Amazing Grace for choosing The Foundation as a beneficiary of this charitable event. The Foundation is also grateful to all who attended, ate delicious food, and supported The Foundation. We are honored to be part of the extended Grace community.

Donor ProfileJack Gervais

Should you or a family member find yourself in an unfortunate circumstance that lands you in the emergency room at St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center, chances are good that you may be treated by Dr. Jack Gervais.

Gervais’ recent appointment at the hospital is a homecoming of sorts. The 1999 Summit High School graduate was blessed to have the opportunity to return home for the position in his field.

Back in 1999, Gervais had been awarded The Summit Foundation’s Dr. Oliver Stonington scholarship award, a fitting connection, as the late Dr. Stonington had worked with the urologist who helped Jack’s father, Marty Gervais, beat prostate cancer.

The scholarship allowed Jack to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Denver. Following a requisite year off, during which he served on ski patrol at Loveland Ski Area, he spent four years pursuing his medical degree through CU – Denver.

His career path led him to meet his now wife, Nicole, who was working as a medical assistant at Summit Community Care Clinic when he went to volunteer for the Clinic.

Nicole and Jack married in 2008 and moved to Portland, Maine for Jack’s three year residency. Just as Jack was completing his residency, he was given the opportunity to join the emergency room staff at his hometown’s hospital.

“It definitely helped that I was ‘a local’,” Jack says of his appointment at St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center. He noted that turnover can be significant at the hospital, as many physicians find it appealing to live in Colorado, but Summit County’s long winters can be enduring.

In addition to the rewarding position, the recreational opportunities provided by our community drew Jack back. He continues to telemark, Nordic ski and mountain bike when time allows. Returning to Colorado was also an easy sell to his wife, since Nicole had spent 12 years in Summit County. Just prior to the job offer, the couple had given birth to a son, Benjamin, who would also get ample time with his grandparents, longtime Summit residents Marty and Mary Gervais.

Since returning to Summit, Jack has been impressed with the quality of services now available at St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center. “We are proud that we can take care of most of our patients locally, instead of relying on larger hospitals outside of the community,” said Jack.

Shortly after his return to Summit County, Jack sent an email to The Summit Foundation, “The support of The Summit Foundation towards my early education is hugely appreciated, and I am proud to be back serving the community.”

In turn, The Summit Foundation is honored to now be the recipient of Jack’s support to The Foundation and to our community.

Nicole and Jack Gervais have no hesitation in introducing their son Benjamin to Nordic skiing.

Thanks to generous donor support, an estimated 1,000 locals who would have gone homeless, hungry, or unable to receive critical medical care, will now have access to these vital basic needs. The 2011 Summit County Cares Campaign raised over $54,000. The campaign, which ran from November 1 to December 31, was created to benefit nonprofit basic need service providers in the community. Contributions to this charitable drive are

designated for direct emergency assistance. Funds donated through The Summit Foundation to this campaign will be distributed by the Family & Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC) for families and clients in need. Advocates for Victims of Assault, Social Services and Summit Community Care Clinic are coordinating with FIRC to identify Summit County residents with basic needs such as food, housing, heat, medical and clothing to qualify for this funding.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Summit County Cares campaign this past holiday season.

Nonprofit ProfileSummit County Water Rescue Team

The Summit County Water Rescue Team is a nonprofit all-volunteer organization founded in 1975. The organization is dedicated to water safety and team members are trained in the specialized discipline of Aquatic Search and Rescue. The group receives a small amount of funding from the County, but relies almost entirely on public and private donations.

Water Rescue typically operates in Summit, Park, Eagle, Grand, and Lake Counties, but is called to assist across Colorado. As far as Team leader Cris R. Bezinque knows, the Summit group is the highest altitude trained volunteer team in the world. Summit Water Rescue works with many sheriff departments and has trained members of Summit Search and Rescue and firefighters in the county to help assist with water emergencies.

Volunteers are trained in underwater salvage and are skilled at rigging objects for lifting or moving. In 2000, when Keystone’s Zamboni fell through the ice multiple times, the Resort kindly paid the nonprofit rescue team for retrieval.

The Summit group is one of few in the nation that repair almost all their equipment by themselves to keep costs down and extend the life of gear. Team members are sent to technician certification classes to increase their repair skills.

A generous grant from The Summit Foundation for 2012 is providing funding for training and equipment repair. These funds will help with swift water recertification for volunteers, technician certifications, and an underwater homicide investigation class. The rest of the donation will go toward equipment repair parts.

The current Water Rescue Team is comprised of six members with four trainees. Volunteers hold a wide range of paid jobs in and around Summit County from equipment operators to paramedics, as well as waiters and financial planners. Team members donate on average two days a week year round for training. Missions can run from a few hours to a few days. Water Rescue has high turnover due to the intense time commitment and high level of needed skill. The majority of calls also end up being body recoveries, which is difficult for many volunteers.

One family, for whom Water Rescue performed a body recovery, was so touched by the diligence and efforts of the Team, the family established a donation fund for the organization through Giving First. Donations to this fund helped Summit Water Rescue purchase a side scan sonar device, which can decrease search time by days or even weeks.

The Summit County Water Rescue Team has grown, through donations, to be a relatively well-equipped and high skilled organization. If you would like to donate or learn more about the Summit County Water Rescue Team, Inc. visit mnt-tech.com or call Bezinque at 970.390.9566.

Explore the Americas While Supporting The FoundationJoin us Friday, March 9th at Colorado Mountain College’s Breckenridge auditorium for a fantastic photo journey. Expedition photographer David Thoreson will take you on a 28,000-mile sailing adventure to circumnavigate the North and South American continents. David’s presentation will include sailing in extreme weather conditions, visiting remote scientists and Arctic villages, the environment, sea ice and expedition planning.

David has been on adventures most of his life, from bicycling around the United States, Canada and New Zealand to exploring the oceans and Polar Regions of the world. In 2007, David and the crew of s/v Cloud Nine became the first American sailors in history to transit the Northwest Passage from the east to the west. In 2009, sailing aboard the scientifically-equipped Ocean Watch, David became the only American sailor to ever navigate the Northwest Passage in both directions. In June of 2010, Thoreson completed the 28,000-mile circumnavigation by sail of the North and South American continents on the 64-foot s/v Ocean Watch.

David’s work has appeared across a broad spectrum of media from the National Park Service and Smithsonian to the Wall Street Journal and PBS. An hour-long documentary on the voyage, produced with ABC affiliate KOMO (Seattle), was recently nominated for an Emmy award. A new photo book, “One Island, One Ocean,” about the sailing expedition around the Americas is now available. David will be signing these during the reception.

The Summit Foundation is very excited to share David’s stories with you. The presentation begins at 7 pm on Friday March 9th, and will run about one hour with a short Q&A session included. A dessert reception and a chance for more personal time to chat with David and ask questions will follow, along with the book signing. Tickets to the presentation are $10 and $20 to attend both the presentation and dessert reception with David. Proceeds benefit The Summit Foundation and Colorado Mountain College. We hope to see you there!

Tickets may be purchased through The Summit Foundation’s website, summitfoundation.org. Or you may RSVP by calling 970.453.5970 or emailing [email protected].
