SUMMER 2018 The Summit Foundation Awards Over $225,000 to Local Students On Monday, April 2nd, The Summit Foundation participated in Local Scholarship Night, and presented awards to Summit High School seniors. This year, The Summit Foundation awarded its highest amount to date—$226,000! Over the past 28 years, The Summit Foundation has awarded over $3 million dollars to more than 1,000 students pursuing a post-secondary degree in total. This year’s 92 awardees come from six high schools, including Summit High School, The Peak School, Snowy Peaks High School, West Grand High School, Lake County High School, and South Park High School. Nearly 40% of awardees are first-generation college students in 2018. “We had an incredible group of student applicants this year,” explained Jeanne Bistranin, Executive Director of The Summit Foundation, “We are so pleased to be able to recognize their accomplishments and support them in their future.” Each year, The Foundation awards scholarships as part of its mission to support working families. These dollars are distributed directly to universities around the country to help cover students’ tuition, books, and room and board. All recipients of Summit Foundation scholarships are eligible to re-apply for a sophomore scholarship next year. The Summit Foundation’s scholarships are made possible by the local ski areas and over 3,000 community members who make direct donations, participate in employee giving and patron pass programs, and support our fundraising events. The Summit Foundation Tackles College Completion

Keystone Resort hosted an exclusive first tracks morning as a special thank you to the families and businesses that purchase the patron ski passes generously provided to The Summit Foundation by Vail Resorts, Copper Mountain and Arapahoe Basin.

Following the early morning ski on a beautiful (but cold!) Colorado day, guests were treated to a private brunch at the Outpost hosted by the Keystone staff. Breckenridge Distillery provided complimentary vodka so people could enjoy a Mimosa or Bloody Mary after their runs.

Donors were thanked for their generosity and heard about how they are making an impact by supporting The Summit Foundation, which touches so many people in a variety of ways.

A big thank you to Keystone Resort’s Geoff Buccheister and his entire team for going above and beyond in hosting the 2018 First Tracks event.

The Summit Foundation is excited to announce its newest initiative, Mountain Scholars, a program dedicated towards helping first-generation college students find an affordable path to a 4-year college degree.

Formed through a partnership between The Summit Foundation, Summit School District, Colorado Mountain College (CMC), and the CMC Mentoring Program, Mountain Scholars will provide scholarships, mentoring and navigation services to first-generation college students at CMC with the goal of earning a four-year degree.

Susan Propper, a Summit Foundation Board of Trustee and a leading force behind the CMC Mentoring Program, hopes to build upon the mentoring program’s success.

“In our first year, we had eight mentors and mentees. Now, we have over 30 mentees and 25 mentors in the program. The persistence rate — the number who stay in school — for students in our program is roughly 65 percent.”

Compared with a national graduation rate of 5% for low-income, first- generation college students entering community college, the CMC Mentoring Program has had tremendous success in helping student’s complete college. Paired with scholarships and support from CMC’s new Pathways Coordinator, The Summit Foundation hopes to continue to grow the number of first-generation college students obtaining a postsecondary degree.

Initial funding for Mountain Scholars has been made possible by several generous donors, including Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam. The Summit Foundation continues fundraising efforts to help students reach their dreams.

Applications are now being accepted on a rolling basis.

Contact [email protected] for details on this program.

If you like supporting local, independent businesses, try Outer Range Brewery (ORB) at Lusher Court in Frisco. Owners Lee and Emily Cleghorn opened the brewery in 2017 as a “leap of faith”, after securing financing from the last bank they tried. They plan to remain in Summit County, even though they distribute their beers to 200 accounts throughout Colorado, from Fort Collins to Aspen.

If you like supporting entrepreneurs who love Summit County and decide to locate their business and create jobs here, visit ORB. Lee and Emily spent many weekends here, got engaged at Keystone and married at Vail, and decided to move here, with infant daughter Madeleine. They now consider the brewery their “second child”, as it also takes lots of time, effort, and love.

If you like supporting our Veterans as they transition from military service to business, support Lee and Emily. They met in the Army, both rising to the rank of Captain, and served a combined four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. They credit their military experience for their leadership skills and focus – focus demonstrated by their passion for IPA and Belgian brews. One irate customer stormed out when told they had no lager. But in Belgium, where Lee’s father learned brewing, breweries focus on one or two types of beer, trying to perfect them. Lee brewed 100 different beers in his first year, perfecting his craft.

If you like superior IPA and Belgian beers, give ORB’s a try. Don’t take my word for it – USA Today nominated ORB in this year’s “Best New Brewery” contest. The Top 20 were selected by beer critics, and ORB finished Number 2 in the country! Lee says “the secret is spending your money on the best ingredients to make the best beer”, since there are many craft breweries and discriminating beer drinkers in Colorado.

If you like drinking beer in a warm, cozy yurt in the winter or an open patio surrounded by big mountain views in the summer, hang out at ORB. You can book them for special events, too.

If that isn’t enough, if you like supporting The Summit Foundation, visit ORB on Mondays (including holidays), when Lee and Emily graciously donate 10% of all SALES, not just proceeds, to The Foundation. They “trust The Foundation to get funds to the right groups at the right time,” supporting legitimate and effective non-profits. Lee and Emily especially value programs that give scholarships to local kids who are the first in their families to attend college, and those that facilitate wounded Veterans’ participation in outdoor recreation.

Drinking great craft beer, in a cozy mountain setting, while supporting worthy causes; it doesn’t get any better than that!

Kasey Provorse After 11 years with the Foundation, Kasey has recently taken a position with Energy Smart Colorado as their Executive Director. We thank Kasey for her accomplishments with the Foundation over the past decade and wish her well in her new endeavors.

Terri JohnsonTerri Johnson retired from the Foundation at the end of May after a long and successful career in Finance. We thank her for her caring ways, integrity and professionalism. We know Terri will continue to be one of our loyal volunteers for many years to come.

The Summit Foundation continues to grow, and we are excited to announce some recent changes on our team that will allow us to continue to serve our donors and the community in the best way possible. We are thankful to have a talented, dedicated staff to move us forward and continue to make an impact in the community. Our administrative expenses remain at a very low 14.5%. In her three years with the Foundation as Program Officer, Megan has elevated our community partnerships and impact through her work on Scholarships and Grants. Prior to joining our team, Megan was successful in Development and Marketing for the Keystone Science School.

Tracy Dollars, Philanthropy Coordinator

Tracy will continue to provide excellent service to our donors, as well as managing our internal processing and technology, including the pass program, employee giving and donations.
