pArTnErs in HEALing THE WHOLE pErsOnCancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG® have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA fo-cuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind, and body. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a twelve-week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. It fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their regular daily activities.

• Free, 12-week Y membership.• Two 75-minute classes each week.• Small group setting (6-8 participants)• Full access to the YMCA facilities, including KidZone childcare services

OUr insTrUCTOrsOur instructors provide a supportive, safe environment for each class. Our certified instructors and personal trainers have undergone specialized training in the elements of cancer, post-rehab exercise, nutrition, and supportive cancer care.

SPRING 2: Youth Development Programs 2013 www.theSAY.org

The YMCA has over the years taught hundreds of children, youth and adults to swim and helped minimize the risk of drowning. In addition, learning to swim builds pride and confidence. At the Y, we care about building strong, secure, connected and confident people.

Our swim lessons are specifically tailored to the child’s age, swimming ability, level of physical development and confidence in the water. The participant will advance in the program as they become more skilled in the water.

In addition to lessons, we recommend our family members enjoy Family Swim time (see pool schedule for hours) to increase your child’s comfort and ability in the water. Youth members can buy passes to participate as well.

If you are currently enrolled in a session, we encourage you to look up your child’s evaluations midway through the session. Please visit www.theSAY.org, Youth Aquatics section, for more information.

If you have questions about what level you should register your child please schedule an evaluation with us. We do evaluations Monday through Thursday between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm and on Friday or Saturday. All evaluations are by appointment only.

FLOTATiOn DEViCEs:Our swim program’s philosophy believes in the use of bubbles to help children gradually become accustomed to the water. Every lesson, we remove the bubbles at least once to test your child’s buoyancy and build confidence.

rEpEAT A CLAss:Every child learns at a different pace. Some children may remain in one level for a longer period of time. Once they develop into the requirements of the class, they will progress to the next level. Ask the deck supervisor for skills that you can practice with your child during family swim.

MAKE-Up CLAssEs:We only offer make-ups for the Parent/Child classes. If your child gets injured or becomes ill and cannot make it to lessons, we can remove him from the session and refund the remainder of the balance to you with a doctor’s note.

WAiT LisT: We will make every attempt to accommodate you into a class if you are on a wait list. We will contact you as soon as there is an opening. For class alternatives, please speak to a deck supervisor prior to registration to find all classes available for your child’s swim level.

YOUTH sWiM

sCHEDULE COnFLiCTs: We are only able to make switches to a schedule if there is an open spot. If no spot is available we will not be able to move you. Refunds are not offered for time conflicts.

YOUTH spOrTs CLiniCs ( Ages 6 to 12) Basketball | soccer | Tennis | intramural Hockey | Flag Football All of our Y Sports Clinics concentrate on skill development, application, and play. Basketball, Soccer, Tennis and Lacrosse are very high in skill development while applying learned skills in game play. Hockey is more of an intramural program, meaning there will be more opportunity for playing games as opposed to more skill instructional lessons. Sessions are assigned by age, rather than level.

Youth Basketball Clinics (Ages 6 to 12) The Basketball Clinic is designed to develop fundamental basketball skills while learning teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Children will learn fundamentals, strategies, rules of the game, and much more. Skills taught include fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling and ball handling. Lesson plans include offensive strategies, defensive strategies, rebounding and team play.

Youth soccer Clinics (Ages 5 to 9) The Soccer Clinic is designed using the small sided soccer curriculum to develop fundamental soccer skills while learning teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Children will learn basic fundamentals, strategies and rules of the game.

Tennis Clinics (Ages 5 to 9) Experienced instructors will teach basic fundamentals of tennis. Lessons will include the utilization of modified equipment and creative methods of individual training for an optimum-learning environment, meeting each child’s skill level needs. Clinics are held in the Hubbard Gymnasium throughout the year, with the exception of our Spring 2 session which classes are held on outdoor courts.

Clinics are separated into 3 age groups; 5-6 years, 6-7 years, and 8-9 years. We have included 6 year olds in two clinics because of two reasons; high demand in that age group and developmental level. Children will learn skill development and then apply those skills by participating in game play.

gym for Homeschooled Children (Ages 6 to12) This class is designed to promote both physical and social behavior. Each class will focus on team sports such as soccer, basketball, kick-ball, baseball and much more! Children will have fun while learning about sportsmanship, teamwork, and the core values of the YMCA.
