Pastor’s Corner Beloved, May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect. Eucharist Prayer III Often, we think of an offering as money we put in a basket, often something we can do without. We consider it our responsibility to support our parish, so the bills can be paid, and so that we can have a place to worship. But have we ever considered that we are the offer-ing? The gift we place in the basket is just a practical way to present an offering of our time and sustenance to the God who has given us all things. Before we can give our-selves, our very body and soul, God must make us to be an offering. In other words, we are not the giver, but the gift that God gives to his Church. Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attain-ing to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephe-sians 4:11-13 So many of you give yourselves to the work of God here at Guardian Angels and Our Lady of Hope: to build up the Body of Christ, to work towards unity in the faith, and to journey toward the discovery of the fullness of Christ. I consider myself fortunate to be a part of this great group of Christian faithful. I could single out so many here in gratitude for your selfless acts of service and giving. I could embarrass all of you. However, I do have one I would like to men-tion in particular, knowing just how irritated I am about to make her by doing so. Sister Linda Barringer has given herself to Christ through decades of service as a Religious. For the last 17 years she has given herself to the Body of Christ as a teacher and equipper at Guardian Angels. Many of you reading this letter have benefited from her instruction. Some she guided into the Catholic Faith. Others she has instructed more deeply in the Faith. And for others she has instructed your children. It is unfair that she has come to her retirement at a time of such turmoil when tradition-al retirement celebrations cannot be held in her honor. She deserves better, and I hope we can do something more official for her in the fall. For now, please honor Sister by saying a prayer for her. Her constant presence here will be sincerely missed. Whenever you hear in Mass, “make of us an of-fering to you,” consider the example of Sister Linda, priests, religious and lay people who sacrificially give themselves to the Body of Christ. And seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit of how he would give you to Christ and his Church. Yours in Christ, Father Ed

Do You Need a Face Mask? Please do not let your need of a face mask restrict your comings and goings now that public restrictions are being lifted. City guidelines have recommended that we wear face masks when in stores, and going about activities in the community. Guardian Angels Parish has a number of masks that were made by our talented quilters. We will have masks available during Masses. If you contact Kate in the parish office ([email protected]) she will make sure you have masks delivered to your home.

We meet from 6-7pm on the first and third Tues-

days.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday June 16.

From Sister Linda to Her Parish Family

Dear Parishioners,

As of May 31, I am among the ranks of the retired. Feels funny - yet exciting - because there is a new journey to be begun.

Since I do plan to try to continue coming to 4pm Mass as I have for the last 18 years, I don’t feel like I need to say a final goodbye. But I won’t have contact with the majority of you, and so please know you will be missed. Especially the families, the RCIA groups and Thursday night groups which have been central to ministry for me here at GA.

So many gifts exist in this parish, so much good will and desire to be of service. I am grateful to those of who have taught our children thru the years, those who came to learn about their faith on Thursday night, the many women and men who were sponsors and part of the sponsoring community for those who desired to enter the Church thru this parish.

Thanks to each of you, so many I can’t name you all, who have been such an important part of my life. In Spanish hasta luego means see you later… So instead of goodbye which seem so final… I am say-ing, “Hasta luego… until we meet again.” Sr. Linda

Our Dark Night: Appointment with God

Pope Francis, quoting from the Catechism, (at the Papal Audience on June 9, 2020) explained that “the spiritu-al tradition of the Church has retained the symbol of prayer as a battle of faith and as the triumph of persever-ance.”

After wrestling with the stranger throughout the night, Jacob is finally overcome when his opponent strikes his sciatic nerve. After asking Jacob his name, he tells him, “Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Isra-el... for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” He refuses to tell Jacob his own name, but blesses him instead — and, the Pope said, “Jacob understands he has encountered God ‘face-to-face’.” (Genesis 32)

Pope Francis explained that “wrestling with God” is “a metaphor for prayer.”

Jacob, who had always succeeded in life by his own effort, is reminded that he is “a mortal man who trembles and fears. For once Jacob has only his frailty and powerlessness to present to God.” This, said Pope Francis, is when he is finally able to receive “God’s blessing, with which he limps into the promised land: vulnerable and wounded, but with a new heart.”

We too, said the Pope, “have an appointment in the night with God: in the night of our life, in the many nights of our life, dark moments, moments of sin, moments of disorientation." It is when we are alone, and are able to recognize our own weakness that God comes to us.

“But precisely in that moment, we need not fear,” Pope Francis said, “because God will give us a new name, which contains the meaning of our entire life; and He will offer us the blessing reserved to those who have al-lowed themselves to be changed by Him.” VaticanNews.va

Be still and know that I am God.
