Being a Member of the Body of ChristI was recently speaking with a Pastor friend of mine. Hes a hockey coach, and we were bemoaning just how over-programmed families have become. He believes that parents are geng to the point of revolng. We, as parents, are learning to say NO. We, as busy individuals, are also oſten saying NO to Church. Theres so much going on at OSLC, its overwhelming. Believe me—I know. Perhaps its me to priorize what is necessary for life. There are lots of reasons why someone chooses not to parcipate fully in the community of Our Saviours. To paraphrase what someone pointed out in worship recently, if we dont fully parcipate and value what we have as a community, it will not be around when we need it the most. Invesng our me (and our money) into this community—both socially and faithfully—is an investment in our own future. Its also an act of faith—an expression of what it means to be the Body of Christ. Heres what I believe we need for life—both individually and communally: worship regularly, give faithfully, and parcipate in a small group or educaon group. Thats it what member- ship looks like. You dont have to aend every fundraiser or serve on every commiee. You dont have to volunteer for every acvity or make cookies for every bake sale. But we need each other deeply in order to be faithful in Gods calling to us—to go and bless and serve and worship. Thats what it means to be the Body of Christ. “Being a Member of the Body of Christ”

I was recently speaking with a Pastor friend of mine. He’s a hockey coach, and we were bemoaning just how over-programmed families have become. He believes that parents are getting to the point of revolting. We, as parents, are learning to say NO.

We, as busy individuals, are also often saying NO to Church. There’s so much going on at OSLC, it’s overwhelming. Believe me—I know. Perhaps it’s time to prioritize what is necessary for life. There are lots of reasons why someone chooses not to participate fully in the community of Our Saviour’s. To paraphrase what someone pointed out in worship recently, if we don’t fully participate and value what we have as a community, it will not be around when we need it the most. Investing our time (and our money) into this community—both socially and faithfully—is an investment in our own future. It’s also an act of faith—an expression of what it means to be the Body of Christ. Here’s what I believe we need for life—both individually and communally: worship regularly, give faithfully, and participate in a small group or education group. That’s it what member-ship looks like. You don’t have to attend every fundraiser or serve on every committee. You don’t have to volunteer for every activity or make cookies for every bake sale. But we need each other deeply in order to be faithful in God’s calling to us—to go and bless and serve and worship. That’s what it means to be the Body of Christ. In Christ,

Pastor Tobi White

The Quest Inside for Uniting Spirit (Q.I. for U.S.)

Daily Spiritual Practice: Spiritual Direction—Times of Struggle

“For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.”

~1 Timothy 4:10

Right now, there is a popular saying that espouses one to not compare their insides to other people’s outsides. This is great advice; but this is also advice that can be difficult to incorporate into our lives during times of struggle. At these times, when looking at the surface of another’s life, it is easy to proclaim to oneself that “they have it so easy”. But little do you know - they may be thinking the same thing about you!

The bottom line is we all have struggles. We all go through times in our lives when what we are dealing with is more than we can handle, or more than we know how to process. A spiritual director can help by walking with you in times of struggle— in times when you need to cast away a burden and in times when you have a longing for something. Whether a life transition, a loss, or any burden or struggle you are facing—a spiritual director can accompany you through it all.

A spiritual director will listen deeply with love and be present with you on the journey. They are a guide and companion that sits with you while you comprehend and process the struggle. They will support you as you become more aware that not only are you not alone but that you are cared for deeply - you are God’s child after all. It is important to note here that spiritual direction does not replace or function in place of therapy or counseling. In fact, often the two go hand-in-hand in helping you heal and process.

Join me next month to learn more about what it means when a spiritual director points you to practical disciplines of spiritual growth.

My prayer is that you allow God, and one another, to assist you in your struggles.

Quarterly Congregational Meeting Update

Held November 20, 2016, the congregation approved the amended constitu-tion, confirmed election of Alice Timm as lay advocate for Congregational Care Team, and elected Kent Reinhard as Vice President. The Treasurer's Report informed the congregation that though expenses are about $18,000 below budget, income is $30,000 below expenses. Faith Formation Team and OSL Foundation both gave updates on their ministries. Of note: the congregation passed a resolution that the income received after December 1, 2016 directed toward the building debt fund in excess of sched-uled monthly payments be directed to building improvements for the ex-pressed purposes outlined below and not to exceed $10,000: Shed, Sanctuary smoke detectors, paint, and security camera installation. We hope that these items can be addressed quickly through increased gifts toward the building debt fund so that we can get on with the business of retiring the debt as in-tended. Secretary position open Now that we've passed the constitution, which add-ed the secretary position to the council, we are looking for nominations. This position will serve as an officer of the oversight team which is part of the full council. This position is expected to meet with council or oversight monthly, will have both voice and vote, will provide printed copies of meeting agendas, maintain and share meeting minutes from council, oversight team, and congre-gational meetings, and oversee the archiving of official congregation docu-ments, including minutes, financial reports, and other pertinent communica-tions.

Sharing Our Talents “Called and compelled by our hope in Jesus Christ, we empower our community to care, learn, teach, lead, and serve.”

Sign up to read (lector) in the Atrium at the information kiosk. Flower sign-up is hanging on wall beside the elevator (cost is $35). Those wishing to serve on Altar Guild, can contact Elaine at: [email protected] and those wishing to serve with hospitality can contact Jaylynn at: [email protected]. Thank you to the hospitality teams who served in November!

Alternative Gift Giving - For many years and in many ways Christians have been challenged to take con-sumerism out of Christmas, to spend less, worship more, give of our time, and share our resources with those in our community and throughout the world. We have heard it all before and members of our con-gregation have taken the challenge to heart. It isn't some-thing we advertise, or can measure, but through casual con-versation we know many are finding great joy in giving in new and creative ways.

The Mission Outreach Team offers the following sugges-tions for giving to those who may not otherwise receive gifts, and invites you to share in conversation, or via Facebook, ways that you have been blessed by giving to others. Your idea may challenge the next person.

Angel Tree Incarcerated men and women send the names of their children and identify age appropriate gifts. You will find those names on the tree in the hallway. Participants of the Safe Place Support Group volunteer to wrap and deliver the gifts.

Shoes Following the theme of "Walking a Mile in Their Shoes," you can donate gently used children's and adult win-ter shoes and warm boots for local schools and agencies.

ELCA Good Gifts There are catalogs on the table in the west hallway, with order blanks, suggesting sustainable gifts to families in countries where access to food and fresh water is a challenge.

Local Refugee Needs Resettlement for refugees in our coun-try involves a rigorous 13 step process. Once they arrive in the U.S., they have the task of rebuilding their lives and find-ing a way to furnish a home. There is a list of items needed by local families being settled by Lutheran Family Services and Lutheran Immigration Services located on the bulletin board in the west hallway. Please take the opportunity to hear Bahar Karim who came to our country on a Special Im-migration Visa from Iraq, where he served the U.S. Army, December 4, at 9:30a.m., in the Community Room.

Fair Trade Coffee, Teas and Chocolate make wonderful gifts and directly benefits those who produce the products. Visit the coffee closet in the atrium to see the great selection.

In our church family prayers, we remember:

Those Ill: Gretchen Zwetzig, Karole Kaldahl, Steve Anderson, Burt Anderson, Dick Anderson, Mona Anderson, Mark Foster, Connie Dresbach, Mitch Zim-mer, Chuck Cullen, Dan Guida, Dan Rollins, Becky Remington, Allen Hegemann, Michelle Degerness, Cindy Zimmer, Misty Hamar, Marilyn Dorf, Meko Finnial, Kay Witt

Why is this list shorter than usual? We have gotten into the practice of listing birthdays of people related to people related to people who used to go here. Most of them have-n’t attended worship or participated in many years. For the sake of efficiency, we will be listing birthdays and anniver-saries of currently active members. We will not omit college students or military personnel. If your child or grandchild isn’t on the celebration list, please encourage them to find a church home—become part of the celebrations where they are. As stated in the article: OSLC members worship regular-ly, give faithfully, and participate in a small group or edu-cation group. We’re holding each other accountable to the community we serve. Good News… The Freed for Life Banquet was a success. We filled to ca-pacity a week before the event. FEAST partners did a great job of sharing their JOY through song and testimony. Thanks to all who attended, supported and baked cookies, and to the cate-chism students who helped with table decorations. A team effort! The Election Day Worship Service was a wonderful reminder that our God is a God of peace, reconciliation and love for all people. We can choose to carry those values into the world, dispelling fear and hatred. The FEAST partners enjoy making our building look festive! There is lots of laughter and excitement as they participate and feel part of our church family. Check out the basement fellowship hall and give DeAnn Cudley a big "thank you" for her time and talents. Service Project at the Women’s Prison in York! Thanks in part to a $1,000 gift from the OSL Foundation, Pastor Bob Bry-an met his $37,000 goal to fund No Kid Left Hungry (formerly Kids Against Hunger) at the Women’s prison in York! They ex-ceeded the goal and packed 150,390 meals with the help of 222 inmates, 21 Saved to Serve W.E.L.C.A. volunteers, and many staff members of NCCW!
