Chairman’s Corner By Weining Ken Zhen

S Of

JANU-

ARY 15,

2018, I HANDED

THE responsibil-

ity of SANTRO

president to Dr.

Allen Li. Re-

flecting back, I

could say whole-

heartedly that it was truly my pleasure

and honor to serve SANTRO for the

last two years, with which I have been

associated since its birth. This year will

mark SANTRO’s 10-year anniversary.

It is time to celebrate, but also time to

reflect and rejuvenate toward the future

of our organization.

Over last 10 years, we have certainly

witnessed the tremendous growth and

advancement of Radiation Oncology in

China, in tandem with the miraculous

transformation and economic growth

there. As China grows more prosper-

ous, many hospitals in China can now

acquire the latest technology and

equipment much faster than we can

here. The radiation oncology profes-

sionals in China have also absorbed the

basic and the latest knowledge at an

eye-popping pace. I am proud that

SANTRO has actively been involved

in spreading the knowledge and bridg-

ing the gaps that may exist in China.

Clearly the role of SANTRO has been

and will continue to evolve. The radia-

tion oncology community in China still

has a long way to match to that of well

developed countries in various aspects;

such as standardized residency training

in radiation oncology, radiobiology,

medical physics, its accreditation sys-

tems and much needed fully recog-

nized medical physics in its health care

system, just to name a few. Though the

substance may change over time, the

core mission and vision of SANTRO

will continue to be relevant. I have high

expectation for the next leadership led

by Dr. Allen Li to bring the collabora-

tions between CSTRO and SANTRO

to the next level. As the slogan for

SANTRO 10-year celebration appro-

priately states, “Together Bridging the

Future”.

In a closing note, I would like to thank

SANTRO board and all members for

the opportunity to have served as the

president of SANTRO for the last two

years. I would also like to take this op-

portunity to express my gratitude to the

current and immediate past presidents

of ASTRO; Dr. Paul Harari and Dr.

Brian Kavanaugh for their support to

CSTRO and SANTRO. I had the privi-

lege to bring both to CSTRO annual

convention to show ASTRO’s support

for stronger tie with CSTRO. The pres-

ence of ASTRO at CSTRO convention

undoubtedly will enhance the profile of

CSTRO.

The 10th Anniversary of SANTRO By Ning J. Yue

EAR 2018 IS THE 10TH

ANNIVERSARY OF

SANTRO. In the past 10

years, SANTRO has

made significant contributions to

her missions: facilitate scientific

and educational exchange be-

tween the United States and China

in the field of Therapeutic Radiol-

ogy and Oncology; promote ex-

change of state-of-the-art techniques and scholars be-

tween the United States and China in the field of Thera-

peutic Radiology and Oncology; establish a network for

international clinical trials and for

members interested in such a col-

laboration across the Pacific

Ocean. SANTRO has collabo-

rated with various organizations

of radiation oncology in USA and

China, such as CSTRO and AS-

TRO, and has organized many

symposiums and meetings to pro-

mote her missions. The SANTRO

symposium has become a regular

event at the Annual CSTRO

meeting and the SANTRO recep-

tion at the Annual ASTRO meet-

ing.

Members of SANTRO have been routinely invited to pre-

sent their scientific research findings, clinical experiences

and outcomes, and clinical trials in China. The founder

and the first President of SANTRO Dr. Feng-Ming

(Spring) Kong, in collaboration with the President of

Shangdong Cancer Hospital Dr. Jinming Yu, initiated the

first RTOG sponsored clinical trial in China: POSTILV:

A RANDOMIZED PHASE II TRIAL IN PATIENTS

WITH OPERABLE STAGE I NON-SMALL CELL

LUNG CANCER: RADICAL RESECTION VERSUS

ABLATIVE STEREOTACTIC RADIOTHERAPY. In

March of 2018, SANTRO board members Dr. Feng-Ming

(Spring) Kong, Dr. Ying Xiao and Dr. Ning J Yue partic-

ipated and taught in the NSCLC SBRT Training Course

in Jinan, China. During the training course, Dr. Kong pre-

sented and provided training in Normal Tissue Definition

for SBRT of NSCLC, Dr. Xiao presented “Institution Cre-

dentialing – NRG & RTOG Clinical Trial Data Quality

and Case Review”, and Dr. Yue presented “Clinical Tri-

als, Fractionation, Practice Guidelines and Quality Assur-

ance for SBRT”. Also in March of 2018, SANTRO board

members Dr. Zhong-Xing Liao, Dr. Feng-Ming (Spring)

Kong, Dr. Lei Xing and Dr. Ning J Yue were invited to

give presentations at the 12th Ji-

nan International Summit in Radi-

ation Oncology. At the Summit,

Dr. Liao presented “The Potential

Role of Particle Therapy in Re-

ducing Lymphopenia”, Dr. Kong

presented “Adaptive Radiother-

apy based on PET imaging”, Dr.

Xing presented “Artificial Intelli-

gence and Its Roles in Radiother-

apy”, and Dr. Yue presented

“Quality Assurance and Quality

Control for Multi-center Clinical

Trials”. Dr. Fang-Fang Yin was

” at the symposium of China Med 2018 Beijing in March

of 2018. All the presentations were well received by the

colleagues in China.

The first decade of SANTRO marks her birth and growth.

In her second decade and beyond, the roles of SANTRO

will evolve with the dynamics of the radiation oncology

communities in both USA and China, and SANTRO will

become a more mature organization and will fulfill her

missions in many different ways.

Quan Chen,Weix-

Happy Doctor's Day By Greenwood

The morning of every ordinary day

Is the busy start of the doctor's way

Breathe the fresh scent of the clinic air

Feel the gentle breeze of the flowers there

Between fingers the hand sanitizer flows

The smell of alcohol reaches a Doc's nose

See the shapes of clouds on the screen

Visit the anxious patients at the scene.

Look at their sincere eyes

Listen to their emotional cries

Hear the sounds of their both lungs

Touch the abdomen of the sick ones

The keyboard clicking as words flow

On the screen as medical notes show

When the patient feels ardently happy

The doctor’s day has been fully worthy

Omaha,

Dr. Lin,

Buf-

Celebrations of SANTRO 2008-2018 Ten-Year Success By Feng-Ming (Spring) Kong

Together Bridging the Future

T WAS

MY

GREAT

pleas-

ure and

honor to be

asked to

chair the

committee

for the

SANTRO

10-year cel-

ebration.

As the

Founding President, I am proud of this

organization, our members, our lead-

ers and what we have accomplished

during the last 10 years.

We had a good start in 2008! Our in-

augural symposium, co-sponsored by

CSTRO, ASTRO, ASCO and indus-

trial partners, was held very success-

fully in Grand Epic City. Over 600

participants from 12 countries jointed

the educational and scientific sympo-

sium. ASTRO president Dr. Tim Wil-

liams along with 4 former ASTRO

Presidents, Drs. Jim Cox, Theodore S.

Lawrence, and Kian K Ang, lectured

at the symposium. Outstanding work

was recognized as best abstracts from

young investigators from China and

the United States. We started a Chi-

nese language session during the AS-

TRO annual meetings.

We have done a lot during the last 10

years! I can only mention a few things

here. We have given SANTRO

School training sessions every year:

our training sessions were very re-

ceived, as evidenced by the fact that

we ran out of seats. We have helped

implement modern radiation technol-

ogies like Stereotactic Body Radiation

Therapy (SBRT) at many centers. We

have raised the bar of practice stand-

ards to a new horizon in China. We

worked with our Chinese colleagues

on many important projects, such as

running the most challenging trial,

RTOG 3502, the POSOTILV trial.

We are making an impact on our next-

generation of professionals. We have

lead and participated in the training of

many young fellows and witnessed

the growth of our next generation of

leaders. Many of our members have

provided hands-on, one-on-one train-

ing to many young fellows from

China. A graduate program in medical

physics has been built in China with

the leadership of SANTRO board

members. SANTRO as an organiza-

tion has trained numerous junior phy-

sicians and young professionals dur-

ing these years. Former SANTRO

award winners are now the leaders in

their fields. Many previous trainees of

our SANTRO leaders have become

national leaders in China (some exam-

ples are shown in the picture) and are

making an impact in their fields

worldwide.

Finally, I am honored and pleased to

have my friends and distinguished

colleagues: Drs. Luhua Wang,

Jinming Yu, Zhongxing Liao, and Al-

len Li as co-chairs to lead this very

special 10-year celebration.

The detailed information on the cele-

bration activities during ASTRO is on

the cover page of this newsletter.

We may also include other symposi-

ums fit to the mission of SANTRO

and celebrations.

Please mark your calendar to join us

for these exciting events. Through

SANTRO, TOGETHER we bridge

the FUTURE, to do more collabora-

tive research, provide better care for

cancer patients and nurture a greater

next generation of leaders.
