Councillors say that the lack of a Local Plan for the area leaves it at the mercy of speculative housing development. Sandbach councillor Sam Corcoran said: “Cheshire East Council wrote to the Inspector on 2 April asking for a month delay to the Local Plan timetable. “The reason given for the request is that elections have unexpectedly delayed the process and that neighbouring councils are not responding as promptly as hoped. “Labour councillors have expressed alarm that the election was not taken into account when setting the timetable and are concerned that there could be other problems.” Labour Councillors have urged the council to write to local MPs asking for help in protecting the green fields of Cheshire from speculative housing applications. Cllr Corcoran added: “The Conservatives have let loose private developers, hoping that free enterprise will solve the housing shortage. “As a result, planning is currently out of control in Cheshire East, with speculative housing applications being granted approval. “The counter-balance to the new legislation is supposed to be a Local Plan saying where development should and should not take place. “Cheshire East Council does not have a Local Plan and, under the Conservatives, the Plan process has been repeatedly delayed.” Planning expert and Labour’s prospective Parliamentary candidate for Congleton, Darren Price said: “The importance of having an adopted plan cannot be over- stated. “I would advise the council to start making contingency plans in case it cannot be fixed within the six-month suspension period.” MORE DELAYS Councillors hit out at more delays to Local Plan

SANDBACH youngster Josh Clarke is setting his sights on a career in broadcasting. Budding reporter Josh, aged 12, made an appearance narrating a documentary for BBC One’s iconic news show Newsround. Josh, a pupil at Manchester Grammar School, was invited to read the real life testimonials of young men who have experienced eating disorders and self-image issues, as part of a programme to be broadcast this month. The voice-over work is Josh’s first professional acting appearance, having been put forward by his drama teacher, Matt Nichols. Matt said: “I’d seen Josh perform in a school production

of a play, Chat Room, in which he was excellent, so I thought that this opportunity would be a fantastic experience for him.” Speaking about his visit to MediaCityUK to work with a director and record his voice-over, Josh added: “It really made me appreciate how an actor works as part of a much bigger team. “It was interesting that my voice-over was directed to match up with the footage that had already been shot. “I can’t wait to see the final piece broadcast and appreciate how the sound and visual are edited together.” Josh is already taking huge strides to develop his drama career, by talking to agents and writing his own play.

THE BBC’s flagship daytime Politics Show came to Sandbach last month. Producers filmed a live programme insert as part of a series of articles. Giles Dilnot, a reporter for the programme, tours the country talking to ordinary people at work or leisure. On this occasion he visited memebers of Foden’s Band during a rehearsal and the following day the BBC broadcast live to the studio from Sandbach. The day picked for the broadcast turned out to be a significant one as the latest policy release was to do with schools and in particular the

impact it would have on the teaching of music within the education system. It is a subject that is close to the heart of many members of the band including Ian Raisbeck (cornet) who took part in the programme. Ian was joined by Dave McGlynn (bass) and band archivist Stewart Green to discuss the issues of the day for three minutes on BBC2. The BBC crew then turned up to film the band performing its signature tune ‘The Cossack’ which was recorded three times along with bits of the rehearsal. During the show the three people connected to the band were asked their opinions about the upcoming elections.

Caught on cameraTHIS year’s Sandbach Transport Festival weekend featured an added musical treat. The first Young Musician of the Year competition, staged by the Sandbach Concert Series organisers, took place on the Saturday. The group decided to hold an event to showcase local talent of all ages with ten players in the Senior Section and five in the Junior Section. All the players have featured in the Concert Series during the year and have come from local schools to compete for prizes. They were judged by professional musicians Sophie Rosa and Sally Wigan, who like the competitors have featured in the concerts at St Mary’s

Church Hall. Audiences were amazed at the high standard of performance and it was a difficult decision for the judges to select the winners. These included Billy Proctor on guitar, who came third with a £25 prize and Matthew Brett, who was second on percussion winning £50. The overall winner in first place was Alex Flanders, on trumpet, who picked up £100 and the title of the first Sandbach Young Musician of the Year. There was also a prize for ‘special merit’, donated by international conductor Bramwell Tovey and won by Richard Rhodes, who played the bass tuba.

by Stewart GreenSANDBACH celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Transport Festival with a slightly different format this year. The changes were down to the road improvement scheme at the M6 junction. This did not deter exhibitors as more vehicles registered than usual making this one of the most impressive weekends of the year in Sandbach. The event also included live music and a number of free events for the family in the park including rides on Thomas the Tank engine. On Sunday local celebrity Tom Seals provided the music for the final concert on the Market Square while Fodens Band continued the tradition of a parade through the town.

The band had played at Scotch Common before marching to the middle of the town pausing in front of

a number of Foden and ERF trucks in the High Street before heading towards the Old Hall to give an hour long concert. Saturday had been a day for a display of cars, music and the events in the park. Graham Alcock, one of the organisers, said it had been a good weekend but sad that they had not been able to have a 25th anniversary parade. He added: “What will happen next year with the parade I do not know. It depends if there is a change of police policy. “Hopefully we could have a parade on the normal scale depending. If not then we could have a mini parade or one at

the end of the day when the vehicles leave the event. “We will be back next year.

There have been rumours that 2015 will be the last transport festival which is untrue and I can assure the public that it will be back next year as for as long as Elsie and myself are able to organize the event.” (pics by Stewart Green and Jonathan White)

FINISHING IN STYLE

A HAT-TRICK for Forbes Edwards and a brace for Andy Nash saw Sandbach RUFC end the season in winning style. Glorious weather and a stunning pitch welcomed Sandbach on their first and perhaps last, for some time, trip to Dudley Kingswinford. Dudley having been relegated last season, have struggled again this season, managing to win just a single game. Despite their problems they started with a pace and ferocity that took Bach by surprise as they struggled to break out of

the ‘end of season’ party mood and after 15 minutes the home side was leading 10-0. But Sandbach gradually settled and inspired by Edwards and his dynamism, began to put more pressure on DK which soon paid dividends, pegging them pabck to 10-12 at half time. With the wind at their backs in the second half, Sandbach looked considerably more accomplished and determined to finish the season in style. With Sandbach ringing the changes across the park,

energy levels rose as they scored three tries in the final 10 minutes. The victory saw Sandbach finish eighth in the National 3 Midlands league. Manager Stuart Battersby said: “It has perhaps been a season of what ‘might have been’. “With 7 losing bonus points and two losses by just a single point it shows how close we actually were to a promotion candidate season. “Benny Elliot has topped the league points scoring table and Jack Leech, Benny Elliot and

Forbes Edwards are 1, 2 and 3 in the Try-Scorers’ table. That’s a remarkable achievement. “Few realise the demands on an amateur player at this level. “Since July last year the 1st and 2nd team squads have been training twice a week and playing at the weekend, almost without any breaks. “The physicality at this level is massive, the hits often akin to a car-crash but, nursed through by an excellent physio team, the squad has battled week-in, week-out to deliver the very best for our club.”

DRESSING DOWN: The 1st team celebrates the end of the season as cowboys and indians, with the under 16s
