A development for 200 homes off Crewe Road, was refused by councillors at a meeting of Cheshire East’s Strategic Planning Board last month. Sandbach Town Council had objected to the scheme arguing that it was a greenfield site and that priority must be given to brownfield developments. Letters of objection were also received from 260 local families, which listed a number of concerns about the plans, including the added pressure that more homes would put on the local infrastructure. Some argued that no decision should be made until the Sandbach Neighbourhood Plan is in place. Others said that the town was being ‘over-developed’ and in danger of losing its identity. Councillors heard also that the extra traffic could put local schoolchildren at risk. Recommending refusal of the plan, a council officer said: “It is considered that the development would be premature following the publication of the consultation of the Sandbach Neighbourhood Plan.” Separate plans for 165 homes on land off Abbey Road in Sandbach were also refused at the same meeting. Sandbach Town Council objected on the grounds that the plans went against policies to protect green gap and that they included no provision for additional facilities or infrastructure. Some 118 local residents also made written objections, arguing that the green gap between Elworth and Sandach would be eroded and that residents are unable to sell their houses due to the numbers being built. Amongst the reasons for refusal was again the decision that it was ‘premature’ following publication of the Sandbach Plan consultation. HOMES HALTED Further developments for Sandbach put on ice

OFFICERS are looking to trace burglars of a convenience store on The Square in Homes Chapel. The burglary at Sainsburys Local was reported to Cheshire Police at around 3am on Tuesday June 9. A police spokesman said that during the incident the offender appears to have forced entry into the premises and stolen a quantity of cash. Leading the investigation, DC Simon Gidman, from Crewe CID, said: “A full investigation into this incident is currently underway and we are following a number of lines of enquiry. “A number of potential witnesses have already come forward with information in relation to the case; however we are keen to hear from anyone else who believes that they may have seen or heard anything suspicious.” Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 62 of 9/6/2015. Alternatively information can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

POLICE are appealing for information after a quantity of lead was stolen from a church roof in Warmingham. The incident is believed to have taken place on the evening of Wednesday May 27 May at St Leonard’s Church in Warmingham near Sandbach. PC Colin Wray from Congleton Neighbourhood Policing Unit said: “The damage caused by the theft of this lead is going to cost a significant amount of money to repair. “Not only was the lead stolen from the church roof, but the offenders are believed to have damaged a number of gravestones and turrets on the building, showing complete and utter lack of respect for their surroundings and visitors to the church. “I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who was driving through the area late on Wednesday night or into the early hours of Thursday morning who may have seen any suspicious activity at the church.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 497 of 28/5/15.

A HEALTH warning has been issued over fake goods sold by the owner of a Sandbach tanning salon. Members of the public who bought the fake cosmetics or perfume are being warned that they could cause allergic reactions and other health risks. Richard Griffin tried to make a fast buck selling a wide range of counterfeit designer gear at Sun City in Welles Street, Sandbach. He offered customers ‘Estee Lauder’ and ‘MAC’ cosmetics, ‘Chanel’ handbags, ‘Lacoste’ fragrances, ‘Tiffany & Co’ jewellery, ‘Barbour’ and ‘Super Dry’ jackets, ‘UGG’ footwear and ‘Gucci’ and ‘Dolce & Gabbana’ watches. But Griffin’s money-making scheme was foiled after a member of the public complained to Cheshire East Council. An undercover Trading Standards officer visited the salon and made a test purchase. Council officers returned and seized 74 items, some of which

were on display and some in storage. They also found a ledger book in which the illicit sales were recorded. Trading Standards officers calculated that the genuine equivalents of the seized fake goods would retail for approximately £6,280. Griffin, of The Stables, Stanthorn Hall, Middlewich Road, Middlewich, admitted 15 offences under the Trade Marks Act and was sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work after appearing at Warrington Crown Court. He was ordered to pay £6,671 costs and will also have to repay £1,857 or face three months in jail.

THIS year’s Party in the Park takes place on Saturday July 4, with music reflecting American Independence Day. Cllr Mike Benson, of Sandbach Town Council, said: “The Party in the Park is a great way to start the Summer. “The sun shone for last year’s concert and we are hoping for good weather again this year. “It is so relaxing to sit on the grass with a picnic and listen to well known classics performed by high calibre musicians. Sandbach Park is a great setting and Foden’s Band never disappoint. “This year they are being supported by Sandbach School Brass who will kick off the concert at 6.30pm and play a varied programme ranging from funk to swing with some

Elvis thrown in too!” Foden’s take to the stage at 8pm to present USA themed favourites. The world renowned masters of brass will perform an Anglo American Extravaganza, weaving a magic carpet of music to carry the listener across the Atlantic and back. The evening will come to a rousing conclusion as the audience sing along to ‘Jerusalem’, ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and ‘Rule Britannia’ in a Last Night of the Proms style finale, before the event is rounded off with a spectacular burst of fireworks at 10.15pm.” Adult tickets are £10 and children go free. There will be a licensed bar and people are encouraged to take their own picnics along.

THE Aquarelle Guitar Quartet played at the Sandbach Concert Series in St Mary’s Church Hall last month to a full audience. During the interval the players were photographed with new Sandbach Mayor Gill Merry who was recently installed in her new position.

LOCAL keep fit expert Lynne Scott is encouraging people to get in shape for the summer. Lynne, who runs a number of classes in Sandbach, said: “I have been teaching Pilates for over 10 years and used to work at a fitness instructor in a local gym but I preferred to teach one to one and small groups in the local area. “The benefits are enormous for Pilates, in fact that is how I got into teaching it in the first place. “I had a really bad back through twisting it reaching out - and Pilates was the miracle cure! “I went to a doctor and he just said ‘go for a walk’ - but its all about strengthening your back muscles and core to prevent injury and keeping supple and strong all through your life to prevent stiffness as you get older. “I absolutely love my job and all the people who I teach. “Their feedback has been amazing since I started at Sandbach. “Some ladies are now coming twice a week - they just can’t get enough.” To take part call Lynne on 01270 663958.

SANDBACH commuters could benefit from the Crewe HS2 link sooner than expeced. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the Government is aiming to bring forward the construction of the high speed rail project. Cheshire East Council has backed calls for the plans to be ‘fast tracked’ and indicated again that Crewe could become the first northern hub for HS2 on route to Manchester.

YOUNG Sandbach cricketers are to benefit from a £47,760 grant that will improve facilities at Elworth Cricket Club. The Foxes have won part of a £16.5m pot of National Lottery funding from Sport England. Now they will be able to develop land adjoining their existing London Road base, together with part of the existing outfield, to form two new natural cricket pitches suitable for players aged up to 15. The Foxes hope the new pitches will create greater flexibility of pitch management, and provide scope for more cricket for girls and boys. Club Chairman David Buckley, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which will further fulfil our ambition for more young people in the local community to have the opportunity to play cricket. “This demonstrates our

commitment to build on the achievements already made with the purchases of the existing ground from our landlords in October 2013, and the adjoining field from Cheshire East Council in November 2014. “We are doubly delighted and grateful that the support that we have received from the local community, schools, businesses and community groups has paid off and we can now look forward to realising the next step in our plans.” Sport England’s Charles Johnston said: “We’re delighted to have invested so much into community sport, and see on a daily basis the impact that it makes for local people. “The latest round of facility funding continues to make a noticeable difference to community sports clubs across the country. By giving people

top-class, sustainable facilities in which to play sport, and by improving and protecting our

playing surfaces, we’re ensuring that more people can pay sport, more often.”
