A POPULAR summer reading challenge has set a new record for the number of children taking part – for the third year running. The year’s theme of ‘record breakers’ captured imaginations and sparked a huge range of spin-off activities for youngsters, including storytelling, parachute games and crafts. Cheshire East libraries, including Sandbach, got more children attending events and more schools actively involved. The total number of children who started the summer reading challenge was 5,788 – which is more than ever before. Moreover, more than 60 per cent completed the challenge and received a ‘record breaker’ medal and certificate. The libraries recruited and trained 66 volunteers this year as well as 14 assistants. These dedicated volunteers gave a total of more than 1,350 hours to libraries over the summer. One of the first events was to join 140 library authorities across the UK to take part in a Guinness world record attempt

for the most reading pledges received. After a busy weekend of fun activities nationwide, the attempt just fell short of the 100,000 record. Councillor Les Gilbert said: “We were really pleased to support the national summer reading challenge in our libraries and delighted once again at the record success of this year’s scheme. “It was fantastic to see so many excited faces of all ages going to our libraries.”

Well read kids

A FALLEN telegraph pole brought traffic to a standstill in Sandbach on October 12. A fire engine was called out to the scene on Middlewich Road at around 2.15pm A heavy goods vehicle had collided with the fibreglass telecommunications mast, which came to rest on the roof of terraced properties. Firefighters temporarily secured the mast to prevent further damage while they waited for the telecomms engineer to arrive. Middlewich Road was closed between Platt Avenue and Chapel Street by the police, while the incident was being dealt with.

A CHRISTMAS market and late night shopping event comes to Sandbach on Friday December 4 running from 3pm until 7pm. The event promises a festive atmosphere in the town with school choirs singing carols, Santa in his grotto, brass bands playing, Christmas lights, chestnuts roasting and the aroma of mulled wine. The Christmas market will extend throughout the town, filling the Market Square, High Street, Market Hall and Little Common with up to a hundred stalls. All goods on sale are hand made, decorated or painted, home grown, reared or cooked, Fair Trade or traditional. The stalls will be festooned with lights and stall holders are dressed in festive costumes to add to the ambience. There will also be street food complimenting Sandbach’s cafes and restaurants while shoppers will be able to take advantage of late night shopping in the town. A town council spokesman said: “This is a lovely evening providing something to interest all the family.”

MEMBERS of the Sandbach Crosses Rotary Club have raised £1,000 for St Lukes Hospice after helping with a charity collection at Roadchef’s M6 Sandbach Services. Club President Tony Wilford said: “During August, Sandbach Crosses Rotary Club in conjunction with Barclays Bank made a collection for various charities on the M6 at Junction 17. “Barclays were promoting their 3 Peaks run for charity and the Rotary Club was invited to assist. “With the kind permission of Roadchef and a donation to their charity we sweltered in the August heat! “Although our role was small compared to Barclays we managed to raise £500 which Barclays agreed to pound match. “So we are pleased to say that £1,000 has been donated to St Lukes Hospice in Winsford. “We hope that this will be

repeated next year and look forward to training some of our members in readiness.” Rotary Club of Sandbach Crosses meets every Tuesday evening at Gee’s Kitchen, Sandbach at 7.30pm. Anybody who would like to attend future events or Rotary Club meetings would be warmly welcomed – please contact Rtn Ron Smith on 01270 764254.

by STEWART GREENFIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze in the roof of a restaurant in Sandbach on Monday afternoon September 28. Four fire engines attended the scene at around 3.25pm and six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and a covering jet to fight the blaze. The gas and electricity were isolated and crews checked for further fire spread at the Barchetta restaurant, next to the canal on Crewe Road in Wheelock. A large fan was used to remove smoke from the building while traffic calming measures were also put in place. A Cheshire Fire Service spokesman said: “Crews worked to remove close boarded timbers from the ceiling of the property and used hand held extinguishers to extinguish small hot spots of fire.

“A thermal imaging camera was also used to check that the fire was completely out. “A cordon was left in place around the building due to dangerous slates.” The building has been a restaurant for many years and since the beginning of century has been the Old Mill Restaurant and then San Marco. It was then vacant for some time before opening as Barchetta in 2014. The fire damaged most of the upper floor of the building leaving the owners unable to open the premises until it has been confirmed safe. A fire crew from Sandbach stayed on the scene for a number of hours after the fire had been extinguished to make sure there were no more hot spots and to start investigations into the cause of the blaze.

Xmas marketCHESHIRE East Council is backing Sandbach’s efforts to prevent unsustainable and unplanned development. The council has now formally received Sandbach’s Neighbourhood Plan – the first from a town in Cheshire East. It follows council leader Michael Jones’ support for a programme to enable communities to deliver neighbourhood plans across the borough – to help shape development in the local area. Sandbach Town Council, which covers a population of 17,976, successfully applied for designation in October 2014. The plan will now be the subject of a final six weeks of public consultation before being scrutinised by an appointed independent examiner. A positive report will then mean the plan can progress to a local referendum, when local people will be given the opportunity to vote and bring the plan into effect. The policies in the Sandbach Neighbourhood Plan will then be given their full weight in deciding planning applications.

SANDBACH RUFC are looking to bounce back from a disappointing error-strewn display against Old Northamponians. Despite dominating for significant phases of the game Sandbach will be disappointed to only come out with a single bonus point, losing 19 - 22 at home. Individual handling errors and

once again poor discipline cost them in a hard fought game - one which left the team stting 11th in the National League 3 Midlands table. Old North’s clinched their first win of the season despite being outscored three tries to one and it was the boot of their young James Grayson, the son of the former England fly half Paul, with his 100% record that

kept them always in touch and ultimately won them the game. Sandbach mounted a series of determined attacks to try and secure the win. They were awarded a penalty of their own in the final minutes when the visitors went offside. Sandbach elected to kick to tie the game but the lack of a reliable kicker was perhaps emphasised, as unfortunately

Allsop hooked the relatively easy chance and left the away side elated. Sandbach will be looking to iron out the number of errors in their game at the moment. They will however also have to address the number of penalties that they are conceding and learn that in this league any discretion will be severally punished.
