Sandbach Arts Week is the first event of its kind in the town and organisers hope that it will become an annual fixture leading to a variety of artistic and musical events from a number of different arenas. by Jonathan WhiteHUNDREDS of people turned out for this year’s Sandbach Transport Festival. Now in its 26th year, the festival took over the town on the weekend of April 16 and 17. The free event included a large vehicle display featuring trucks, buses, classic and vintage cars, motorbikes, tractors and bicycles on Scotch Common. There was also an open day at Sandbach Fire Station, a children’s funfair, road, zorbing in Sandbach Park, a Hog Roast by Sandbach Round Table and

live music on the Cobbles. Other events included a steam engine display and performance by Foden’s Band at the Old Hall, a historical display of ERF and Foden’s memorabilia at the Ring O’ Bells pub, and an art exhibition at the Masonic Hall. The Sunday featured the ‘Roar into the Festival’ cavalcade involving several hundred motorcyclists from the South Cheshire Motorcycle Club and surrounding clubs. They were led up the High Street by the St Luke’s Hospice bus.

SOME eight fire crews and a hydraulic platform were drafted in to fight a major blaze in Sandbach on Sunday April 17. Firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm at 5.40pm at Flowcrete Business Park, Booth Lane in Moston. Firefighters from Sandbach found smoke and flames coming through the roof of a brick-built office building near the entrance to the site. Crews wearing breathing apparatus began tackling the fire using hose reel jets. Police were called to the scene and closed nearby roads while firefighters worked to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Crews split the scene into zones, setting up two main jets using water from the nearby canal. A fire break was also established to prevent the blaze from spreading to other parts of the two-storey building. Firefighters in breathing apparatus went onto a flat

roof of an adjacent part of the building and worked to vent smoke from the premises while a crew on the hydraulic platform used a jet from above. Two firefighters in breathing apparatus then entered the premises to assist in salvage operations. The fire was out by 9.50pm and crews worked to damp down any hotspots.

OFFICERS from Crewe CID have issued an appeal following an aggravated burglary at an address in Holmes Chapel. The incident occurred between 7pm and 8pm on Wednesday April 13, when a group of men targeted an address on Elmore Close. As a result of the incident the homeowner suffered minor injuries, but did not require hospital treatment. It is believed that the incident may be linked to nine other burglaries in the East Cheshire area between Wednesday 13th and Friday 15th April. In each of the incidents a group of men have knocked at the door asking to speak to an unknown person, after being told that they do not live at that

address the men have then left for a short time, before returning to commit their crime. Detective Sergeant Richard Johnson said: “We are currently following a number of lines of enquiry in relation to these incidents. “I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who believes that they may have seen a group of men acting suspiciously in a dark blue car, believed to be a VW Golf. “I urge anyone who believes that they are being targeted by this group of offenders to contact Cheshire Police immediately by calling 999.” Anyone with any information should contact DS Johnson on 101 quoting incident number 933 of 13/04/2016.

MEMBERS of the Sandbach Crosses Rotary Club stuck to their task to support the Tidy Town initiative. The willing Rotarians finished a project started last autumn to repaint the railings from the Old Hall on the High Street down to the traffic lights. The paint was supplied by Tidy Town organiser Mike Benson. Several attempts to complete the task earlier had been thwarted by wet weather. Club president Tony Wiford said: “Our team was again lead by Allan Jones a versatile painter ably supported by Jo Webb, David Walls, David Twidale as well as yours truly, who managed to paint the back of the panels without falling into the brook. “Even Dave Whitworth managed to rub down

and paint the odd railing in between doing a questionable impression of David Bailey with the camera. “Mind you, no resting on laurels here. We’ll be repainting the railings on the other side of the High Street sometime soon.” The club now meets every Tuesday evening at at the Crown on Market Square at 7.30pm. Anyone interested should call 01270 764254.

COMMUNITY learning at Sandbach School is to be taken over by The Link. The Link has previously not been involved with adult education but has built a strong reputation locally for the provision of sports, leisure and event facilities management. The Link’s strategic manager, Fiona Davidson said: “We hope to develop a wider curriculum, reaching more people, enhancing the knowledge and skills of individuals and families. “However, we can’t develop

a broader, more innovative portfolio of courses without a bank of tutors willing to offer those courses. “We are asking anyone who has a passion for a subject and might like to consider getting paid to share their passion with others – to contact us for a chat. “We also don’t want to confine ourselves just to adults – family workshops such as pizza making or card making, we think would be popular too.” Anyone interested should call 01270 758886.

SANDABCH RUFC ended the season on a high with a 51-42 victory over Lichfield. The lead continually changed hands for much of the game, in what was a great spectacle for the neutral. In the end Sandbach just pulled away in the last quarter and in so doing leapfrogged their opponents in the final league table. On a dry but rather chilly afternoon Sandbach started strongly and were soon on the score sheet as flanker Ross Sutherland peeled off the side of a driving maul, for the first try of the game after five minutes. Lichfield though responded virtually immediately, when Sandbach needlessly kicked the ball away and full back Greg Massey rounded off a fine counter attack to go under the posts, his brother Luke adding the conversion. Sandbach quickly responded however to retake the lead before starting to concede

penalties, from which Lichfield took full advantage. Sandbach eventually eased away in the sceond half with excellent work from Elliot amongst others. Overall Sandbach will be pleased to finish the season with a win and can once more

be pleased with their efforts in retaining National status in a very competitive league. This game saw Will Stockdale announce his retirement from 1st XV activities, with the former club captain and player coach taking over the director of rugby role next season.

The game was also sponsored by Crewe Volkswagen who gave the man of the match awards to Sandbach skipper Chris Davenport and the Lichfield fly half Luke Massey. The match was followed by the traditional fancy dress party for the players.
