Graduation PolicyThere is a board policy (BP 6146.1) which affects all grade levels. Students may not be promoted to the next grade level if they do not meet the required criteria for each grade level. The policy is posted on the SRHS website (www.santarosahighschool.net) under the counseling section for your review in both English and Spanish.

Credit Make-up ClassesStudents who need to make up credits prior to graduation should see their counselor immediately to discuss options for doing so. Please note that there is limited space in classes.

Tips for Test-Taking SuccessTaking tests can be a traumatic experience for some students. Here are some skills to help your child feel more confident for tests:• “Cramming” the night before a test is not productive. Instead, get a good night’s sleep.• Be sure to thoroughly and carefully read the test directions before beginning to mark your answers.• Skip over questions to which you do not know the answers and return to them if there is time.• Bring an extra pencil, just in case.• Before beginning your test…take a deep breath, relax and dive in.

Class NotesCongratulations to the history classes of Mr. Franzman and Mr. Horner, and to the lifeskills and history classes of Ms. Swehla for donating over 1,100 pounds of food for the Redwood Empire Food Bank. Each teacher put a big jar in his/her room and asked students to donate their spare change for the month of December. No extra credit, no pizza party, no prizes; just spare change to help others because it was the right thing to do.

The students came through with an amazing $1,300. Then, instead of sleeping late on their first day of winter vacation, about 20 students joined their teachers and shopped for the Food Bank at G&G Market. Connie, the manager of G&G, was so impressed with the students' good works that she told them to go get a couple of extra shopping carts and fill them up too, with G&G covering the extra cost. (She also supplied cookies and juice for the hard workers!)

After filling about a dozen shopping carts, the students hauled the food into their cars and trucks and caravanned to the Redwood Empire Food Bank, and in the pouring rain, delivered their load of groceries to the thankful workers. A great time was had by all, and the students learned about doing good works for the community.

Injured Elsie Allen Cheerleaders Need HelpPerhaps you have heard about the two Elsie Allen High School cheerleaders who were involved in a tragic car accident in Mexico on their way to a family holiday on December 23rd. Alexis Vargas, 17, and her cousin Cristina Garcia, 16, (whose mother was killed in the accident), were critically injured. Cristina’s father, who was driving, may have swerved to avoid an animal. He is employed as a saw operator at Golden State Lumber in San Rafael. Both girls are recovering from numerous injuries in hospitals far from Sonoma County.

The community is coming together to assist the families in their efforts to recover from this terrible ordeal. Sonoma County Supervisor Efren Carrillo, along with the “Pasta King” Art Ibleto and others arranged a benefit event held on January 27th to raise funds to help with the medical costs for the cheerleaders. Both the staff at Santa Rosa High and the Student Teacher Parent Organization (STP) have donated to the cause. If you would like to make a donation, you may send it to:

The Garcia Torres family at Chase Bank in the name of Guadalupe Garcia and to

The Vargas family at Redwood Credit Union in the name of Gabriel Vargas

AQ Photography Students Start 2013 With a Bang! The new year is already turning out to be an exceptionally public one for AQ Photo students! January 25th marked the opening reception of the “IMBY” (In My Backyard) invitational exhibition at the Sonoma County Museum of Art, which included Intermediate and Advanced AQ Photography students’ work. Artist Dominic Egan worked with the students last semester to help them create their pieces, which focused on the site in and around the museum. In conjunction with this exhibition, the same students visited the museum on January 11th to participate in a landscape painting and poetry workshop. The Press Democrat interviewed them during this event. The show continues through Sunday, February 24 at the museum. Advanced AQ Photography students are also participating in the creation of the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) Lobby Mobile Project with artist Nick Vankrijdt. Their first visit to the installation site was January 24th, and they will also be visiting Petaluma's Digital Grange to learn how to fabricate the images for the artwork. SCOE is funding this project and it will be a permanent installation in the lobby. More potential upcoming projects include a day-long workshop in San Francisco exploring alternative photographic processes and the AQ Photography-sponsored regional juried exhibition “Zone of Focus” at a new venue (still to be determined) in collaboration with other North Bay photography teachers. It is important to note that every one of the five overarching VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) California Framework and Content Standards are addressed in AQ Photography, but this year there has been a particularly exciting focus on the component strand Standard V – “Connections, Relationships and Applications.” Kudos to Tanya Braunstein and her students for all the exciting collaboration and work in our arts and education community.

Mark Calendars NOW for 19th Annual AQ Spring ShowcaseIt’s hard to believe, but AQ is coming up to its 19th Annual Spring Showcase on Thursday, March 28th beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the SRHS Auditorium. As always, there will be a few new surprises, as well as continued highest quality of exemplary examples of students’ work from this school year. This is a fantastic opportunity to see a sampling from all eight AQ specialty disciplines in one evening, as well as projects drawn from the AQ core-related classes of English, Physical Science and World History. Look for the announcements in early March, featuring the selected student art (not yet chosen at press deadline) emphasizing this year’s AQ theme, “Renaissance.” Don’t miss seeing what the AQ students have created this year with their remarkable imagination, technical skill and unique perspective on the world. Thank you Mrs. Piehl, Miss Hunt, Miss Stornetta, and the Santa Rosa FFA for their outpouring support to such a worthy cause.November was the launch of our 2011 Vintage Panther Chardonnay Wine. The wine is $20 a bottle. There is also some 2010 wine still available for $15 a bottle and a 10% case discount. Ordering is available on-line or using order forms. Visit our website www.srhsagboosters.com for more information. All proceeds of wine sales benefit the FFA and Agriculture department.

Project Grad ~ We’ve been busy already!

2013 Party Planning We are planning to have approximately 380 seniors in attendance for the 2013 senior party. The Party’s main theme has been chosen, room themes and designing has begun. Entertainment has been booked and the shopping has ensued for prizes, food, beverages and supplies. Volunteer staffing and coordinating work dates for pre-party construction is in progress. We are actively looking for warehouse space so we can begin the actual construction and design of themed props.

Volunteering:We need volunteers! The Santa Rosa High School Project Grad Party is the best around, year after year, because of our amazing volunteer families that make it happen!!! Become one of those amazing volunteers. We have many ways, before, during and after the party, for you to help provide a safe graduation night for the 2013 seniors.

Getting involved in Project Grad before your student becomes a senior is one of the best ways to ensure that Project Grad will be there for your student when they do become a senior. We try to have enough volunteers so that the senior families do not have to work the night of the party. As you can imagine, the seniors really do prefer NOT to have their parents at their Project Grad Party!

Parent Involvement, CONTINUEDSTUDENT - TEACHER - PARENT ORGANIZATION (STP) Susan Burch, STP President(707) 526-1044, [email protected]*

Thinking that the Mayan’s could be right, I didn’t prepare too much for my column this month. But, I have had some time to think about a few things, reflecting on the past year and looking hopefully to the new year, and what I know is that as parents, teachers, students, administrators etc., we cannot fix everything, we cannot solve every problem. We have students from the neighborhood, many transfers from other schools, and others who travel daily from far away communities, just to be a part of Santa Rosa High School. While we can’t do much about budget cuts or the uncertainty of daily life, we can control what happens in other areas of our own school, IF we choose to get involved. You can make the school and the events in which your children participate safer, more fun and more successful just by taking that first step. Get involved.

The Student Teacher Parent Organization is a great avenue for just that. If you choose to buy a membership, all monies collected go right back into the school for support in some area, like field trips for students, training for teachers, snacks for students during STAR testing week, the College Information Night hosted by Seth Geffner, and much, much more. You do not need to buy a membership to be a part of STP. Just come to a meeting or drop me a note asking where you can help. If you have an idea that might be beneficial to the school, we want to hear it. Being a parent at SRHS automatically makes you a part of the STP, and we want and need to hear from you. Don’t be just a face in the crowd, be a part of the community where your children spend their days. Building a stronger sense of community can and will make a difference in our school. Change for the better, change for the common good, change starts with you. Attend an STP meeting this year, and find out firsthand what is going on in your student’s school day.

I look forward to seeing you. Happy New Year! Go Panthers!

Things have been busy here at SRHS! We are wrapping up the winter sports and beginning to gear up for the spring sports schedules. Practices for spring sports start in the second week of February, so if your student is still interested they need to get in contact with their coach so they don’t miss any tryouts.

We are missing Mr. Dellepere as the head of the Boys Athletics. Mr. Dellepere stepped down at the end of December after years of dedicated service to the school. His expertise and wisdom will be sorely missed. We will be looking for his permanent replacement to start this next fall.

On a positive note, we’ve received all-league honors for many of the fall sports, and I’d like to finish with sharing these accolades for our athletes with you.

2013 Track and Field SeasonDoug Courtemarche, Head Track and Field Coach

Practice begins for Track and Field on Monday February 4th at Nevers Field at 3:15 sharp. Even if students do not have their athletic packets completed at that, time they should still show up for the first team meeting and practice. Without a completed packet they will still be OK to be at our first meeting, but will not be able to practice.

As of January 7, 2013, we have 174 students signed up for Track and Field. There are 8 individual running (track) events and 6 field events that the students can participate in. There are also numerous relay events both track and field athletes will be able to participate in.

We look forward to a very exciting and spirited season with all of our athletes improving themselves in each of their endeavors.
