Forty"five states have committed to use a new common set of instructional standards called Common Core State Standards $CCSS%. These standards, designed through collaboration between universities, K"12 education and the private sector, will mean changes to the way that instruction happens throughout our nation.

With the new Common Core State Standards, teachers will be working to emphasize greater depth of knowledge. Lessons will be focused on the most important ideas and students will be asked to think critically about those ideas. Among other steps, this may mean more project"based learning, hands"on activities, as well as writing that allows students to synthesize information from across subject areas.

Principal’s Update, CONTINUEDContinued from Page 1.

Below are a few FAQ’s and responses regarding the Common Core State Standards:

What are content standards?• Content standards are designed to ensure that all students are provided with the same information in a given course.

Although the California standards are among the strongest in the nation, they have been criticized for covering too many di&erent topics and not allowing time for teachers to emphasize application, synthesis and higher order thinking skills. This should improve with the implementation of Common Core State Standards.

How are the new Common Core Standards di&erent from the existing standards?• In response to feedback from teachers, universities and employers, the U.S. Department of Education created new federal

standards for instruction. These new CCSS have been adopted and will be the basis for the majority of the content taught in classes throughout the U.S. The new CCSS are more focused on increasing students’ depth of knowledge.

What will this mean for instruction?• Instruction using the new Common Core State Standards will be more centered on project"based learning, deeper analysis

of a smaller number of problems that are more relevant to the real world. As educators, we will be asked to create lessons that challenge students to think more critically and to use what they have learned to complete assignments and projects.

Sincerely, Brad Coscarelli

Free TutoringFree tutoring is available to any student seeking support! Tutoring for all subjects is every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 – 4:00 in room 143. The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) The CAHSEE will be given May 14th (English) & 15th (Math) for Juniors & Seniors who need to pass and for Sophomore make-ups. This state-mandated exam ensures that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate competency in English and Mathematics. By State law, all students must pass both the English and Math sections of the CAHSEE by the end of their senior year to earn a high school diploma. Santa Rosa High School traditionally has very strong CAHSEE scores. Information about the CAHSEE program, including released test questions, is available at www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/resources.asp. It is important for those needing to take the exam to be in attendance. For best results: get a good night’s sleep the night before, eat a good breakfast, take your time and do your very best.

Class of 2013SRJC Spring Grades for SeniorsSeniors taking SRJC classes to fulfill graduation requirements must pick up a form to take to their SRJC instructors for completion and return it to their SRHS counselor by Friday, May 17th. Request your final HS transcripts to be sent to colleges before the end of the school year. Request forms are available in the SRHS Counseling Office. If you have any questions about diplomas or transcripts, please contact the Registrar, Patty Stage at 528-5594 or email to [email protected]

Diplomas Diplomas for graduating seniors will be available for pick up in the Counseling Office after June 17th when final grades are recorded. Fun FactsThe Ag Department, a bastion of male students from its inception, finally went co-ed in 1958 when nine senior girls petitioned to study agriculture. It was eventually revealed that they did so in order to avoid attending the new Montgomery High School. Clement Young graduated from SRHS in 1886 and became SRHS's principal and first football coach in 1892. He was the coach because he had actually seen a game of the new sport while a student in the East. He left education for real estate and politics, and became California's governor in the 1930s. SRJC opened on the SRHS campus in 1918 and shared space, materials and instructors until its first building was completed in 1932. SRHS' panther mascot was chosen in 1925, along with the orange and black colors and the fight song that is sung in the main building every year during football season. DeSoto Hall was named for Eugene DeSoto, who taught English for 51 years, 36 of them at SRHS.

Robert Ripley of "Believe It or Not!" fame was a SRHS student who left school in 1907, just before graduation to go to work.

Looking for a new home for an old

refrigerator?

SRHS can use it! The Agriculture Building (used by both the Math and Ag departments, along with a few others) is in need of replacing a full-size refrigerator that’s on its last legs.

If you think you might be able to help supply a working fridge, please contact Eric Bohn at [email protected].

They’ll even welcome more than one!

Some information about Project Graduation Reservations

NOW: Pay with PayPal:

The reservation forms for the Project Grad party are available now - on the website (www.SRHSProjectGrad.com) in the Panther Purr, and in the main office. Please take a moment and read the following guidelines to smooth the reservation process for your student.

BOTH student and parent/guardian MUST SIGN the reservation contract area. Each year, many reservations are delayed due to the lack of a parent/guardian and/or student signature. Even though there is

language in the contract that seems to contradict the requirement for both signatures, we need to know that both the parent/guardian AND the student are aware of the rules and guidelines for the party, and the signatures

acknowledge this.

Please make sure that you follow the instructions on the reservation form to make sure your payment is properly recorded – put your student’s name on the memo line of the check AND write the check number in the

space indicated on the form.

If possible, please return your student’s reservation form and payment in a sealed envelope, and avoid the use of staples. Paper clips are preferable to staples if you are not using an envelope. The forms are to be returned

to the main office – Project Grad has a mailbox to the right as you enter the main office.

Project Grad is a celebration for the entire SRHS Senior Class 2013 – it is not limited to graduates only. If your student has had academic or other difficulty and will not be “walking” in the graduation ceremony, they are

still encouraged to attend Project Grad and celebrate the year with their class!

The reservation for the party is $70 which includes EVERYTHING at the party. Students only need to bring their ID that night – no money is required after they have their reservation. No tickets are issued – reservation lists are

posted in the main hallway beginning two weeks before school ends. Please have your student check for their name to make sure the reservation was received.

If your student needs financial assistance, the principals will have scholarship forms. NO STUDENT IS TURNED AWAY FROM PROJECT GRAD FOR LACK OF FUNDS!

Please plan on submitting your student’s reservation by the end of April. The last minute reservations create problems. Last year, over 50 students bought their tickets “at the door” – we want as close to 100% participation as possible, but waiting until the last minute makes it difficult to properly register the students for the event. This is a safety issue, as well as a logistical issue. If a student registers at the door and there is a health concern, it is

difficult to get that information to all of the staff at the last minute.

Thank you for keeping this information in mind when the time comes to reserve your student’s spot at this amazing celebration of their accomplishments! Please contact Reservation Chair Mary Lou Smith at

(707) 575-7301 or [email protected] (email is preferred) if you have questions.

Ag News, CONTINUEDComing up on May 17 is the Country Fair Day and Auto Show. This is a highlight of the year, where the FFA and Agriculture departments show off their animals and students display their cars and compete for prizes. During the extra long lunch period, students can purchase lunch from the Barbeque, have ice cream for dessert, win a goldfish, participate in games, admire the cars and animals, and enjoy a lunch period with friends as the end of the year approaches. There is even a petting zoo area.

If your son or daughter has a car, encourage them to enter it! Whether it be the parents' old minivan, a custom cruiser, or even the "most likely to break down,” there is a place on the field to honor your car. Among the students who have worked hard to organize this day are Zach Stroupe, Dominic Mikalson, Sean Gray, Steven Alkire, Katie Catching, Aden Holmes, Tristan Winn, Emily Overton, the entire FFA and Agriculture Departments, and many more.

AQ 19th Annual AQ Spring Showcase Big Success! The 19th Annual AQ Spring Showcase on Thursday, March 28th drew a huge audience, packing the Auditorium to overflowing. The event was dedicated to Vince Whitcomb, AQ and SRHS Physical Science teacher, who recently died and was described as a “true Renaissance Man” for his appreciation of and talent in both the Sciences and the Humanities. Directed by Kira Bombace, AQ Vocal Music Instructor, the Chamber Singers performed a beautiful tribute to Mr. Whitcomb, singing the song, Goodnight, Dear Heart.

As always, there were a few surprises, including the presentation, ArtQuest, I!uminated, a montage featuring each of the eight AQ Arts Specialties and their unique interpretation of the ideas of Renaissance in a contemporary context. Produced by AQ Video Arts Instructor, Jim Helmer, AQ I!uminated presented recorded artists’ statements from each specialty and then showed a recorded or live sampling of the discipline’s work this year. Adding to the ambience of the auditorium were three large-scale paintings (12 X 18 ft.) that were unfurled over the balcony, and produced during the “Full Circle Festival,” a collaborative project of ArtQuest Visual Fine Arts and the Santa Rosa Charter School for the Arts, K-8th grades. About 100 AQ VFA and 300 SRCSA students worked on the giant paintings, using a repeating circle motif as a symbol of community and connection, with each piece created in a different palette: one neutral (black, white and grays), one in warm and one in cool colors. Another highlight of the Showcase was the door prize drawing for two tickets (valued at $75 each) to the Cielo Vertical Arts aerial dance performance at the “The Tower” located at the Oliver Ranch in Geyserville. Sean Masuda, the brother of AQ Photography student, Bryan Masuda, won the tickets and plans to attend the event. (The event will directly benefit ArtQuest; see below for information about how you can also attend!) The AQ Visual Exhibition in the Multipurpose Room, the Digital Arts and Video Arts screenings in the Library Computer Lab and the projects from the AQ Core-related classes of English and World History in the main part of the library were all well-attended. Dance and Instrumental Music also drew crowds for their longer programs in the Auditorium during the second half of the evening. Digital Arts student Julio Rodriguez’s artwork “Reflections" was selected as the winning entry emphasizing this year’s theme, “Renaissance,” and he received a $250 check from AQ and Friends of AQ in recognition of his accomplishment. His image is also featured as part of the 2013 AQ notecard series; see more details about that in an accompanying story. Thanks to Friends of AQ and all the students, teachers and volunteers for helping make the event a wonderful success. Special thanks to AQ alumni Jaycob Bellochio and Lukas Thompson’s band Snakewalk for performing at the opening of and also later in the evening for the continuing festivities. Look for next spring’s 20th!

AQ Renaissance Notecard Series 2013 Now AvailableThe AQ Notecard Series for 2012-13, Renaissance is now available! The series (13 different cards, boxed, with envelopes) features the Spring Showcase poster image and the twelve other finalists’ images for $24. The poster design winner was Julio Rodriguez and the twelve other finalists were Emily Barber, Nolan Blair, Tyler Gonzales, Carissa Nacol, Kevin Norman, Rita O-Young, Emily Pearson, Nori Rasmussen, Abbey Reynolds, Sophie VanDyke, Allie Venezia, and Kassandra Walker. Notecards can be purchased in the AQ Office in Room 21 in the Arts Complex or call 707-535-4842 or email [email protected].

May 3rd Last Chance to Catch Instrumental Music Performance!Don’t miss your last chance this year to hear the SRHS Instrumental Music groups perform. Join them for their Spring Concert on Friday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. The concert will feature the Symphonic and Concert bands, as well as the String and Symphony Orchestras. Tickets can be purchased at the door: $6.00 general admission and $4.00 for seniors and students. For more details contact Instrumental Music Director Mark Wardlaw at [email protected].

Dance Company Wraps It Up In “Mixed Elements”The ArtQuest Dance Company’s final show, “Mixed Elements” is set for Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will be held in the Auditorium. “Students are challenged to push their boundaries in this show,” commented Nzinga Woods, AQ Dance instructor. She adds that Mixed Elements will feature an unusual and eclectic mix of dance styles and genres, exhibiting a high level of technical and conceptual skill. Tickets will be available at the door. Come See One-Acts by AQ’s Newest Actors Victoria Carpenter, AQ Theatre Arts Instructor, invites everyone to see the newest AQ Theatre Arts students in their only public performance of the year. AQ Beginning Theatre Arts presents three evenings of one-acts on Thursday, May 16, Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18, all at 7:00 p.m. “It’s important that folks see what these budding Theatre Arts students are learning,” Ms. Carpenter said. “We hope the AQ and SRHS community will come to support our newest actors’ work; they’ll surprise everyone with what they are doing!” The one-acts are all student-directed.  Donation is $4 at the door. Please contact Ms. Carpenter for more details at [email protected].

Pinhole Photography Collaboration With Salmon Creek SchoolAQ emphasizes the practice of reaching out into the community, and an excellent example of this is the exciting upcoming collaboration between AQ Photography and Salmon Creek Elementary School! Fifth grade students from the school will be working with AQ Photography students to capture images using pinhole photography. With AQ Photography teacher Tanya Braunstein’s guidance, teacher Allison Gravis will have her students study the nature of light and light-sensitive chemicals and then make pinhole cameras in their classroom. They will then bring their handmade cameras to the Santa Rosa High School campus on May 16th and spend the morning with AQ Photography learning how to capture images, print a negative and then make two positive prints in the photo lab. Before the end of the session, they will also dry mount the prints for presentation. Back at their beautiful campus off the Bohemian Highway in Occidental, they will learn how to write an artist statement and participate in an art critique.

Artstart Presents to ArtQuest Students About Potential Summer JobsSara Gray, Executive Director of the City of Santa Rosa’s “Artstart,” visited AQ in April to encourage students to apply for summer jobs in the program, and to review the application and selection process. Scores of AQ students have worked for Artstart over the years as entry level “apprentices,” and some have even gone on to higher level positions, including AQ alumna Chandra Woodworth, now the Artstart Artistic Director, and Tara Matheny-Schuster, the city’s Arts Coordinator. The program provides employment in the arts to youth throughout Sonoma County. Some of Artstart’s signature projects include the painted benches located throughout Santa Rosa and the murals and tile mosaics along the Prince Greenway on Santa Rosa Creek. Best of luck to AQ applicants on again securing work that they want to do this summer in a creative field!

Beginning Photography Off to SF & SFMOMA The Beginning AQ Photo students will be taking a field trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on April 30 to see a retrospective of Garry Winogrand’s work. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important photographers of the 20th Century, Winogrand (1928-1984) captured moments of everyday American life in the postwar era, producing an expansive picture of a nation rich with possibility, yet threatening to spin out of control. He did much of his best-known work in New York in the 1960s, but also roamed widely around the country. He photographed the rich and powerful, everyday strangers on the street, antiwar protesters, politicians, airports and zoos. In many of his pieces, humor and visual energy show the flip side to the anxious cultural instability of the times. Students will also do some of their own street photography around San Francisco, according to Ms. Braunstein. “They will be able to capture the essence of urban activity and energy using the exposure techniques they have recently learned, such as freeze, blur and pan,” she said.

AP Studio Art Students Score Great College Acceptance & Scholarship Offers College acceptances and scholarship offers are starting to come in for students in the Advanced Placement Studio Art class, which includes students from AQ Digital Arts, Photography and Visual Fine Arts. We congratulate and encourage a! the AP Art students who have worked so hard to achieve validation of their efforts, and look forward to hearing more good news about their next steps in higher education and future careers! And best of luck on the AP Studio Art portfolios! Since ArtQuest began 19 years ago, this class has achieved a consistent passage rate average of about 95% or higher, compared to the state and national averages of around 63%. Go AP Art!

A few tickets are still available for $75 each at the Art Quest office (Room 21); all proceeds to benefit ArtQuest. Well it is that time of year again, when we bid our adieus and say that we can’t believe how quickly the year has passed and how much ground was covered. Many of our seniors are preparing to move on to college, taking their parents with them out of the school. I would like to thank Trevor Glynn for being a good sport and sharing his mother Kim, who is the Panther Purr Editor and wears many other hats. Fortunately, her freshman son Corey will still be here for a couple of years and so will Kim. Also, I would like to thank Caitlin Hansen whose mom is Mary Poppenheimer, the Vice President of the STP. Unfortunately, there are no younger Hansens to keep Mary in the school and she will be missed. And finally, but certainly not least, Jackson Woodward, whose mom Teresa Woodward has successfully coordinated and smoothly run the orientation days for several years. Congratulations to all seniors and many, many thanks to all the students who lend their parents to the school without too much fuss.

As is always our goal, the STP sells memberships to raise money to help with special projects within the school. The function of the S (student) T (teacher) P (parent) organization is to work for a close relationship and communication between parents, faculty and students. Promoting good will with the school, supporting student projects and school projects and programs that benefit the faculty and students of the school.

This year the STP was able to contribute to the following:
