Report cards will be mailed out during the second week of January. Please take the time to go over these semester grades with your child. Give them a lot of praise for good grades and discuss your concerns with them over poor grades. If you need further information on why your child is not succeeding in a certain class, communicate with the teacher. Remember, we oer free tutoring for all students on Tuesdays and Thursdays for one hour after school from 3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Parents can take an active role in Santa Rosa High School by coming to our School Site Council meetings, Student - Teacher -Parent (STP) meetings, English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings, or through various other department and program parent groups. I realize getting involved at school isn’t easy for hard-working, busy parents, but try to volunteer in the classroom, at events, or at various meetings whenever you can to stay connected to the school. The start of the second semester also means the beginning of our winter sports. Come on out and join us for an exciting season of girls’ and boys’ basketball and wrestling. Schedules are available in the Main Oce and on our school website at santarosahighschool.net. The start of the second semester also means that we have some upcoming State and Federal testing. Starting in March, the first round of testing will be for our Sophomore students. On February 4 th and 5 th , our tenth grade students will be taking the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for the first time. Last year, we continued to show strength in the number of students passing the test, averaging over 92% of our tenth graders passing both sections, English and Math. This exam must be passed by your child in order to earn a high school diploma. Please take a few minutes to speak with them about the importance of this test. Have them take it seriously and do their best job. Speak to your child nightly about school. Check their homework. Keep them organized with the use of their planner. Get them to school on time, having had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast. Have them get involved in dierent school activities. Have them come to our free tutoring, open to all students every Tuesday and Thursday in room 143, staed by SRHS teachers and volunteers. If you have concerns or questions, contact your child’s teacher through email, voicemail, or a note in their mailbox in the Main Oce. Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to thank our entire school community for a great first semester. Report cards will be mailed out during the second week of January. Please take the time to go over these semester grades with your child. Give them a lot of praise for good grades and discuss your concerns with them over poor grades. If you need further information on why your child is not succeeding in a certain class, communicate with the teacher. Remember, we offer free tutoring for all students on Tuesdays and Thursdays for one hour after school from 3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Parents can take an active role in Santa Rosa High School by coming to our School Site Council meetings, Student-Teacher-Parent (STP) meetings, English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC)

meetings, or through various other department and program parent groups.

Schedules are available in the Main Office and on our school website at santarosahighschool.net.

The start of the second semester also means that we have some upcoming State and Federal testing. Starting in March, the first round of testing will be for our Sophomore students. On February 4th and 5th, our tenth grade students will be taking the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for the first time.

Have them get involved in different school activities. Have them come to our free tutoring, open to all students every Tuesday and Thursday in room 143, staffed by SRHS teachers and volunteers. If you have concerns or questions, contact your child’s teacher through email, voicemail, or a note in their mailbox in the Main Office. Parental involvement throughout high school is the key to student success.

Sincerely,

Brad Coscarelli

Student-Teacher-Parent Organization (STP) Susan Burch, STP President [email protected]'

Did you know that the first PTA was founded in 1897 as the “National Congress of Mothers?" The group was dedicated to the betterment, educational success and promotion of family participation. In 1970, through advocacy, family, education and communication, the National PTA was able to establish programs that have made a difference in the lives of millions of children, like Arts in Education, hot lunch programs and school safety, to name just a few.

We at SRHS are the STP, and our goal is to serve the needs of our students, teachers and school in general, just like the PTA. To survive we need you, your ideas, your volunteer time, even if for only one event, and your support in every area, including donations if you can afford it, but everyone is a member and no one is turned away. Your participation could make all the difference and that difference could make for a better STP. Please consider attending a meeting in the New Year; just get involved in any way that you can.

We are still working on our goal of 140 desks, 52 floor mats and 5 large logo mats. The donations are continuing to roll in and we are optimistic that we will meet our goal by the end of the school year.

Each year the National FFA Association holds a convention called National FFA Convention. All the finalists from each state come and compete at the national level. Students can receive the highest degree in FFA, which is the American Degree, at National Convention. This year, Santa Rosa FFA had two national finalists go to National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

Adrianna Begley, a sophomore, won first place at the state level with her Agriscience project that investigated the effect of pellet or mash feed on pig’s weight. She received sixth in the nation for her project at National Convention. Adrianna is a 4.0 student, plays softball on a traveling team, and is the secretary for the Santa Rosa Chapter. “Going to National Convention and also competing made me realize how much I could do with FFA and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.” - Adrianna Bagley.

Angie Ruffoni, who graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 2013, participated in FFA all four years of high school and devoted a lot of her time to the chapter. She qualified for nationals with her vegetable production proficiency. At National Convention she placed in the top four. She was the secretary for the chapter her senior year. She also has a great passion for dance. She has participated in dance company at the high school and also at a local dance center in Santa Rosa. “It was a great honor to wear my blue and gold jacket one more time at national convention.” -Angie Ruffoni

Congratulations to Angie Ruffoni and Adrianna Begley on their accomplishments at National Convention. We also would like to extend our congratulations to all the Santa Rosa FFA members who received their National American Degree this year.

Thanks to EVERYONE Who Helped Almost 300 Students “Shadow” AQ at SRHS!Almost 300 students from Sonoma County and beyond visited SRHS this fall through the ArtQuest Shadowing Program from October 16 through December 6. The post-shadow surveys confirm that students had an exceptionally positive experience. Many thanks go to the AQ Student Docents, AQ and SRHS teachers and to Friends of AQ parent volunteers who helped escort and orient the Shadows each morning. Thanks to everyone for helping the Shadows feel welcome! It can often take teachers extra thought and effort to find space and time for these “students-for-a-day,” and we all appreciate this hospitality and know that the potential students and families do, too. Thanks again!

Union of Mind & Body; AQ Collaborative Project To Evoke Sense of Place A site-specific dance performance can take place anywhere but rarely does it occur on a traditional stage, and that is the case with this project. Last school year, AQ Dance instructor, Nzinga Woods and AQ Photography instructor, Tanya Braunstein, conceived a collaboration that would expand dance performances to locations on the SRHS campus and challenge their students’ creative problem-solving abilities to use various alternative spaces as inspiration for their works. The idea also encompassed creating these site-specific performances with dancers’ bodies painted in a way that blended into the natural background of the landscape. Although the collaboration started with two AQ specialties, it soon broadened to include Stefanie Nagorka’s AQ Visual Fine Arts and Regina Brennan’s AQ World History classes. Mike Daniels, resident historian and retired English instructor, visited Ms. Brennan’s AQ World History classes to discuss SRHS’s early history. He captivated students with his knowledge of early rivalries between Petaluma High School and SRHS, the 1943 riot that followed a football game between the two rivals, famous alumni, the original senior steps, and the seven SRHS young women who refused to attend the recently opened Montgomery High School in 1958, just to name a few of the things he discussed.

After Daniels’ visit, author, filmmaker and U.C. Berkeley Professor of Architecture, Jean-Paul Bourdier, was invited to discuss his book Bodyscapes and his approach to mixing body art and land art. He became a driving force of the AQ collaboration because his artistic work conveys what students were trying to create: a visual union of the human body and the landscape. After these presentations, students worked intensely on their projects. Photography students photographed the architecture, land, space, and buildings of SRHS. World History students researched Burke Hall, the auditorium, the Girls Athletic Association, the DeSoto building, as well as the original SRHS campus on Fourth Street. Dance students created site-specific choreography and Visual Fine Art students organized the technical aspects of painting dancers in almost a camouflage manner, so that they would appear at one with the chosen environments, while also responding to aspects of the history of SRHS and the site it is built upon. It is important to note that the resulting pieces are not meant to be literal representations of the site nor its past, but seek to evoke something of a sense of place and the impressions and ideas that students seek to communicate through a work of art. The collaborative work, The Union of Mind and Body, will culminate with performances at various sites on campus during the 2014 Spring Semester; look for dates soon. Historical papers will be archived in the SRHS museum. “Intersecting many disciplines - photography, sculpture, performance, dance, land art, body art, design and acrobatics - the artist creates and choreographs each vibrant piece with a strong philosophy directing each scene, using the medium of photography, known to capture the 'real', to achieve the seemingly impossible, with thoughtful and surreal outcomes.” Jean-Paul Bourdier

Help Bring the AQ Teachers to the Ball !Even though the holidays are over, it’s never too late to give a special gift to someone - so, how about helping bring the ArtQuest teachers to the Ball? We’d like to bring every ArtQuest teacher to the AQ Mardi Gras Ball at the beautiful De Turk Round Barn on Saturday, February 22, 2014. Teachers will receive a gourmet Cajun dinner, a drink ticket, dance to the Cajun beat of Gator Nation and also be able to participate in a live and silent auction. Last year, almost all the AQ faculty purchased at least one additional ticket for a guest and many donated workshops, desserts, special experiences, dinners and other contributions to the event. We really appreciate their additional efforts to help us gather other donations, support students’ participation in making masks and other décor and all the numerous kinds of support they gave the event. Any amount of donation will be gladly accepted by Friends of AQ in our effort to sponsor the teachers who make ArtQuest such an amazing educational experience for our students. Second Annual Mardi Gras Ball Live Auction Seeks Donations! Our very first Mardi Gras Ball and Auction had so many wonderful donations given it would be hard to beat, but we are hoping the second annual on February 22, 2014 will surpass that! Perhaps you have a beautiful home in a vacation destination that you can offer for a week, or access to an extraordinary event like a concert, theatre or ballet, or major sports event. Maybe it’s a spa package, a golf package, or a culinary event - any intriguing experience that would bring excitement to our Live Auction and help raise funds for the Art Quest program and its students would be so greatly appreciated. Donations from the last ball funded many constructive projects and needs within the AQ community! To name a few: costumes for the dance department, computers for the digital department, seed money to all Art Quest teachers, funds to build a website, funding for College Day (specifically geared to Arts and Liberal art colleges and conservatories) and nineteen scholarships for students! If you would like to contribute to this significant endeavor, please contact Connie Sultana at [email protected] or 588-8026 with your special donation. Thank you!! *Live auction donations will be viewed online at www.artquestmardigrasba!.com prior to event.

Happiness is Homemade! Bakers Needed - Mardi Gras BallDo you have a favorite dessert recipe that you’d love to make? We’re looking for bakers who like to show off their dessert “art!” The ArtQuest Mardi Gras Ball invites all bakers to participate in its annual Dessert Auction fundraiser, which is a popular feature of the AQ Mardi Gras Ball. Bake and donate your favorite dessert to be auctioned off at the ball on Saturday, February 22nd. All bakers are welcome! At last year’s ball, the dessert auction was a big hit and sold out completely. For details, please contact Dessert Auction Co-Chairs Cynthia Weissbein Macken ([email protected]) or Lisa Greenstein (lgreenst@pacbe!.net). Thank you for supporting ArtQuest and FofAQ and for making the AQ Mardi Gras Ball even more delectable! Yummm! (Please Note - if you’re not a baker, but would like to donate something “fantabulous” from your favorite bakery, we would love this too!)

Project Grad Project Grad Needs YOU:

Is Your Son a Senior? by Christi CorradiDecorations Chair, Project [email protected]

I have been asked this question: “Is Your Son a Senior?” every time I have talked to other parents about my involvement with Project Grad since his Freshman year. I got involved right away because I knew how important this event is. I shadowed Anita Adams and have now become the Decorations Chairperson.

Last year took 175 people to set up for the party, beginning the weekend prior to graduation (which this year is Memorial Day Weekend), and clean up in the wee hours the morning after the party. This included people to operate the lift and hang things up real high, to construction of various props and closing in the breezeway, to simple decorating. In addition, parents provided catered food and pizza for the volunteers. This is not even to speak about the many volunteers that begin preparing the food for the party.

Oh and the night of the party? It takes many parent volunteers to throw the party. And before all this? We have several work weekends in which we can use 25 or more volunteers each day to get things ready. (Dates and how to sign up below.)

Not only does this party save lives, but it creates a safe and meaningful way for the seniors to spend their last night of their high school years with their friends. It is a magical event. When I worked the night of the party a few years ago, one girl came up to me with a glow in her eyes and said, “This is the best night of my life!” What better tribute?

So, who can help? Any and all parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, etc., of all grades. Senior parents are encouraged to help set up and clean up, and leave the chaperoning of the party to parents whose students aren't attending, but even some seniors have been known to ask their parents to be volunteers the night of the party.

Morgan Bertsch Signs National Letter of IntentOn November 14, 2013, Morgan Bertsch signed a National Letter of Intent to play Basketball for U.C. Davis Aggies for the 2014-2015 athletic year. A very exciting and pride filled day for Santa Rosa High School and her family.

Boys and Girls Basketball BeginsOn Thursday, November 21, the SRHS basketball programs officially began with the “SRHS Basketball Kick Off Dinner.” We had great fun gathering in the North Gym, breaking bread together as a unified basketball program. One hundred forty-three athletes, friends of athletes, and family members joined together for the night. Joey’s Pizza donated half of each $10 ticket back to the SRHS basketball program. Thank

you, everyone for coming out and supporting our programs. Also, a big thank you to Stephen Felando for a great job with the food. We parents appreciate not having to whip up a “potluck special” after a long day of work, and the food was amazing. If you haven’t visited Joey’s Pizza, please give them a try. Not only do they have great food, but they are HUGE supporters of SRHS. After expenses, we raised $715.00 for the basketball programs.

During the evening, raffle tickets were collected and four lucky winners were pulled. The big prize for the Raffle was worth $100. The winners of the raffle received a season pass to all girls and boys home basketball games, good for four people.

Congratulations to this year’s winnersKylie Oden& Devin Murray& Steffenie Lueckens& Julia Muniz

Boys Tennis Out for a Close Shave Adison Mowforth - SeniorThe 2014 boys tennis season is right around the corner and I hope it will be the year of the Panther. I have high expectations for this season, both personally and for the entire team. In the past years we have grown a lot together and this year looks like we'll have our strongest lineup yet. I am particularly looking forward to practice with my good friends and seeing how hard I can push myself. I've set a goal of becoming number one in NBL and winning the title of the All-Empire player of the year. I believe pushing myself daily will help me to be a good team leader through example. This is my senior year, and to me being a Panther is more than the colors. Since joining the team in my sophomore year I have felt at home. I intend to leave my mark on campus as a proud Panther athlete and continue to propel myself forward in life, thanks to the lessons I've learned on court and in the classroom.

Jacob Plack - JuniorOur team has a deal with coach Corky Cramer; if we win the NBL championship he will shave his beard. He's had the beard for a very long time and this radical change for everyone who knows him has provided us with a huge incentive. According to Coach Cramer, the last time his chin saw the sun was in 1977. Even his wife has never seen it, so I'll expect to see her with as many of you as possible on the sideline cheering us on. Tennis is a great game; one that I plan on playing my whole life. I am looking forward to getting back out on the courts with all the good friends I have made on the team. All in all, this looks to be a great season, and I look forward to getting started soon.

THOSE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A MEMBER OF THE TEAM OR WHO SIMPLY WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME, CONTACT COACH CRAMER: [email protected], (707) 318-1226.

SRHS Panther Family Pass and Individual Pass, a must for involved parents. This pass will also allow your family to receive $2 off per person at away NBL meets/games. The Family Pass costs $100 and the Individual Pass is $50. You can purchase these passes at any gate of home games. Please contact Debbie in the SRHS Business Office for more information 528-5385 or [email protected]. GO PANTHERS!!

Cross CountryDoug Courtemarche, Head Coach

The Santa Rosa High Cross Country teams finished the season with high placements at the North Coast Section Championships at Hayward High School Saturday November 23. The boys, led by junior Adan Chavez, finished sixth overall in the Division II race, while the girls finished eighth, only five points out of sixth. The girls were led by sophomore Delaney White, who finished third overall and earned a trip to the State Championships in Fresno. Delaney ran the eighth fastest time ever for a Panther girl at the State meet, tying the time of our most recent girl at the State meet, Kelly Brooks. Kelly, like Delaney, was the North Bay League champion. Kelly is currently running for UCLA.

The boys competing at Hayward included senior Aden Holmes, juniors Adan and Emmanuel Chavez, Justin Thurman, sophomore Toby Alongi and freshmen Luca Mazzanti and Daniel Pride. The girls at Hayward were seniors Marlys Jeane and Sarah Withers, sophomores Aimee Holland, Mazie Lewis, Jodi Pasquini, and Delaney White, and freshman Elizabeth Guzman.

Runners of the year were Adan Chavez and Delaney White while Aden Pierce and Jodi Pasquini were the most improved runners on the team. A great year for the Panther runners with a lot to look forward to next year.

SRHS Baseball NewsPaige Dumont, Head Varsity Coach, [email protected]

To all students interested in playing baseball at SRHS: I am Paige Dumont, the manager of the baseball program, and I am entering my fourth year as Varsity Head Coach. I was fortunate enough to play professionally in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, but have found my talents best served as Coach for SRHS.

There has been a lot of change since I first stepped foot on this campus, but we have slowly established ourselves as a school that produces college-bound student athletes. We have been representing our school well as baseball players within Sonoma County, and the colleges are seeing this. We have done this through an emphasis on learning life skills and making family and then education as our top priorities. We went from having a team GPA my first year of around 2.4 to a 3.1 last year with ten players out of 44 earning 4.0s. All of this hard work at home and in the classroom is paying off, too. We had a player recently selected to take part in Team USA tryouts in North Carolina, while another player currently is being recognized and recruited by UCLA, Long Beach State and St. Mary’s, just to name a few. Not to mention, we currently have four former SRHS baseball players attending and playing baseball at Stanford, Sonoma State, Santa Rosa JC and Marin JC. However, our biggest achievement is a perfect 7 for 7 on the former players attending college.

Baseball is right around the corner and I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in trying out for the team to please contact me if you have not already. If you can’t find me at the field, please contact your Athletic Directors, Kris Bertsch or Kathy Hower. You are going to need your athletic packets filled out and turned in by February 1st . An athletic packet can be obtained in the Main Office at SRHS. The first official day of practice is Monday, February 10th. If you do not have a packet turned in by Friday, February 7th at noon, you will not be able to attend the first day of tryouts. If you currently play on a winter sports team, you will not need to fill out the athletic packet again. All physicals are required and must be dated after June 1, 2013.

We have a very impressive schedule this year as we are the only Division I team in our area and will play at least 6 Division I teams such as Mission (San Jose), San Ramon Valley (Danville) and Vintage (Napa) just to name a few. So, anyone interested in coming to watch some quality baseball, come support the SRHS baseball teams while also enjoying a newly added second floor deck on the snack shack, which will be open for every home game for JV and Varsity. GO SRHS BASEBALL!

SRHS Athletes can earn high school credit Santa Rosa City School’s Board has approved Administrative Regulation 6146.11 Alternative Credits toward graduation, last year. What this regulation states is that any SRHS Student Athlete who participates on a sanctioned CIF team, can earn 5 credits of P.E. for this participation. Athletes can earn up to 10 total credits for their high school participation but before an athlete can earn any credits through athletics, the athlete must have completed ten P.E. credits prior to the start of the sanctioned sport. Once the regular season ends for the athlete, the coach of that sport will forward all eligible names to administration for awards of credit. Athletes cannot miss more than ten days of practice to be eligible for credits toward graduation.  The athlete will not have to deal with any paperwork to receive credits.  All paperwork will be dealt with through coaches/administration/athletic directors/counselors. Counselors will be given information on approved student athletes and they will add these credits to their transcript upon receiving approval through administration. Students can ask their coach if they are eligible at the end of the season. They can then monitor by checking on HAC. If they have any questions, or concerns, after the season is completed, they may contact Ms. Valente, the Assistant Principal in charge at [email protected].

Sports Eligibility: The Big QuestionDoes your student want to play a sport at SRHS? Are you confused as to how to go about doing this? The first step is to understand the sport seasons.

Winter: Basketball (boys and girls), Wrestling - Application Process ClosedSpring: Baseball, Softball, Swimming/Diving, Boys Tennis, Boys Golf, Track & Field, Badminton - Applic. Closes February 14

• Pick up an Athletic Packet from the Main Office. This athletic packet must be completed with an attached sports physical signed by a doctor dated after June 1, 2013.

• Contact the coach for the sport your student is interested in.  Each coach has a box located in the Main Office.  Coaches check their boxes regularly.  Many off-season sports have Open Field or Gyms that are available outside of regular season.

• Student athletes must have a 2.0 GPA in the prior grading period to be eligible.  If they have between a 1.4 and a 1.99 GPA, then we can look at the grading period prior.  If the grading period prior was above a 2.0, then the student may be eligible for probation status.  A student is only allowed probation status usage one time for all of 10-12 grades.

• If your student has transferred to SRHS from another high school, you will need to speak to Ms. Valente [email protected] to fill out all appropriate transfer paperwork for eligibility.

• If you student is not eligible due to GPA during the grading period that the sport tryouts occur, a student can turn in their athletic packet and still be eligible to practice with the team until the next grading period, if the coach has space and agrees.

Remember, Academics come first. Athletics are a privilege, not a right.

Donations can be made with cash, checks and credit cards from individuals and groups (pooled) or employer matching funds and can include pledges over 2, 4 and 5 years. Why Endowment? The fund provides a permanent source of income for student scholarships, programs and departments at SRHS. Endowment funds are invested and the income directly supports programs as designated by the donor. Why Unrestricted? Unrestricted fund income may be used for broader needs of SRHS as determined by the SRHS Foundation Board. It benefits all students. Why Now? Endowment funds answer the growing need to have long term financial stability in order to deliver a consistent cash flow despite changes in the economy and State funding.
