Parents, It has been wonderful having the children back in school. I am amazed by the behavior and wonderful manners that the children have brought back with them. It is evident that the students and teachers have spent time discussing classroom routines and school-wide procedures. As I walk through the hallways and visit classrooms, I am impressed at how quiet the school is and by the teaching and learning that is already taking place at Rosa Lee Carter. Should you ever have questions, concerns, or suggestions during the school year, please do not hesitate to call me at 703.957.4490. My purpose is to help each child become the very best he/she can be. Effective communication between home and school is extremely important in achieving this goal. It has been shown that strong parental involvement and interest in education is a crucial factor in student success in school. I encourage you to be well-informed with up to date information about your child’s class and our school. If you wish to discuss a matter that directly affects your child in the classroom, please speak with your child’s teacher first. He/She is the person who interacts with your child on a daily basis and will be able to address your concerns. Your child’s teacher would be the best person to help you in the areas of: your child’s academic progress, any behavioral concerns you may have, any concerns or questions you may have about classroom routines or procedures, classroom discipline matters, and homework. In addition, the classroom teacher can share ideas to help you reinforce skills and concepts taught at school. If your concerns center on a school wide practice, please direct your call to me. As always if you feel there needs to be additional communication added by an administrator to support the teacher- parent relationship, I am always happy to have a conference with you to remedy any situation.

On another note parents, perhaps you have noticed a few new faces this year. Yes, our numbers are growing. Since we have numerous new families, it is important that I review the procedures and protocols with you upon your arrival to Rosa Lee Carter. There may be times you would like to come for lunch, help in the classrooms, or visit for other reasons. When you visit RLC, please know that there are measures in place to keep your children in a safe learning environment. When you arrive you will be asked to “buzz” in at the door at which time you will be asked for your name, identification, the name of your student, and the reason for your visit. Visitors then must stop in the office. If you are bringing items in for your student you will be asked to label them and leave them in the office. If you are visiting a classroom, cafeteria, or workroom you must sign in at the desk and fill out a visitor’s badge. When you are finished visiting the school, please return to the office to check out. For the safety of all students, all visitors will be asked to follow the same procedures. Please know that not everyone is recognized at this time and we look forward to meeting all of our new families over the coming months. I am pleased with the level of instruction that is being exercised here at RLC. Our teachers spend many hours preparing for your children. We greatly appreciate this community and its value towards high academic standards; you have been an awesome support. Again if you have any questions, do not hesitate to either contact your teacher or the administration staff. The month of October brings us not only beautiful foliage, but a nip in the air that keeps us fresh and on our toes! Enjoy! Principal Mrs. Ann Hines

BULLYING AND HARASSMENT: EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS

All students have the right to attend school where their individual differences are respected and

where they are free of fear of harassment and bullying. LCPS actively upholds and supports efforts to

prevent harassment and bullying. Incidents of harassment or bullying should be reported to the

principal or designee

immediately.

Bullying:

is an intentional electronic, written, verbal or physical act of aggression or a series of acts that

occur in a school setting;

School setting shall mean in the school, on school grounds, in school vehicles, at designat-

ed bus stops or at any activity sponsored, supervised or sanctioned by the school.

is persistent or pervasive;

is directed at another student or students;

occurs in a relationship characterized by an imbalance of power;

may create a personal fear that interferes with a student’s ability to function; and

has the effect of doing any of the following:

substantially interfering with a student’s education;

creating a threatening environment; or

substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school.

Info From the Art Room!

Be Art Smart!

Our first projects are wrapping up, and students are

excited to begin their next projects. Fifth graders will be

diving into clay. Not only will they construct food carriers

(plates), they are also looking forward to a week of “free

clay.” Being a fifth grader has its privileges! Ms. Savarese and I will be team

teaching our Monday and Tuesday fifth grade classes.

Grades three and four will have lessons on shading. Usually this is done later in

the year, but I am hoping that this lesson will translate into better paintings.

Besides, mixing the different colors of paint needed for shading is so much fun.

Painting is always a highlight of the year!

Grades one and two will be reviewing the idea of texture. The students will be

learning how to make marks that suggest smooth material, bumps, and holes.

The following lessons will teach students about painting: how to mix colors, how

to apply paint, wet into wet, and many more techniques.

Please make sure that your child is appropriately dressed for art class.

Parents, you may send in a smock or large shirt for your student to wear during

art class. Please make sure that smock/shirt is labeled with the student’s name.

The art room is a wonderful, but messy, place!

The 1st and 2nd graders will be finishing up our loco-motor movement unit and moving into cooperation games. We will begin underhand tossing and catching with 1st and 2nd grade at the end of October.

Physical Education at RLC

Bookworm Central Book Fair Join us in sharing a love of reading with our students at Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School during the Bookworm

Central Book Fair. It’s a great way to connect children with books they want to read!

Families are invited to shop at the book fair in the RLC Library on Wednesday, October 1, from 2:35 PM until

6:00 PM. Checks and major credit cards will be accepted during family shopping times only.

If your child will be purchasing books during the school day, please send CASH in an envelope or bag marked with

your child’s name. It is very difficult to accept checks during the school day since they must be made out for

the exact amount of purchase. Please remember that all sales are final.

The book fair will be open during regular library class times for student shopping on the following days:

Thursday, October 2

Friday, October 3

Monday, October 6

Tuesday, October 7

Wednesday, October 8

There will be extra shopping time on October 6-8 for students who miss their class shopping time or wish to

make additional purchases.

The money earned from the book fair will be used to purchase new books for the Rosa Lee Carter Library and to

support library and school programs.

If you have any questions about the book fair, please contact Mrs. Alpher, librarian, at 703-957-4490 or san-

[email protected].

Hello RLC Families, We'll be kicking off our Watch D.O.G.S Dads Program in the first week of October. Every week, Friday will be our Watch D.O.G.S Dads day. On this day, one of the Dads will come in and spend time helping out our kids and being a part of some of their activities. The scheduling for this program will only be through email and phone calls. Each week through an email, I will be getting in touch with one of the RLC Dads who have signed up for this Program, followed by a phone call to confirm their availability. The schedule begins at 7:30 am on Friday. Once you come in, please sign in at the Main Office, get your Watch D.O.G.S Dads badge and your printed schedule for the day. The schedule is very streamlined and includes a lot of elements. The schedule concludes at 12 noon. BOX TOPS

The Rosa Lee Carter PTO is pleased to announce that once again, our

school is participating in the Box Tops for Education™ program. Clipping Box Tops is an

easy way for you to help our school purchase items it needs. Box Tops are each worth 10¢

and quickly add up to real cash for our school. We will have 2 collection periods: in the

Fall and in the Winter, so please continue to collect Box Tops all year long. Ask family,

friends, and neighbors to help as well. Our school can earn up to $20,000 per year just

by clipping and sending them in to school. If you turn in your Box Tops by October 24th,

you can help boost the amount of the first check we receive in December. Hurry, clip

your Box Tops and send with your child to school before the deadline. Submission sheets

can be found on the PTO website http://rlcpto.my-pto.org/ or you can submit them in a

sealed bag with your child's name, teacher, and the quantity written on the bag. Thank

you for your help!

Special Education Advisory Committee News

The Loudoun County Public Schools Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) works with the school board, administrators,

parents and teachers who are responsible for students receiving special education services.

Talking Points from the September 16th 2014 SEAC Meeting

The September 16th meeting presentation, PUPIL SERVICES AND SPECIAL EDUCATION, featured LCPS Director of Special Education, Mary M.

Kearney. The presentation emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration and included encouragement for students to com-

plete the www.imdetermined.org ONE PAGER as a part of their annual IEP. The ONE PAGER is included in the staff IEP Phoenix Software and

parents are encouraged to request a copy of the ONE PAGER and learn how it is implemented in the child’s IEP. Mary Kearney’s presentation

focused on the expectations for administrators, teachers, support staff and students. A copy of the presentation is available at www.lcps.org/

seac .

There was a public outreach presentation for the Academies of Loudoun presented by School Board Vice Chair Jill Turgeon and Robin

VanderVoort from the Citizens Volunteer Work Group. Turgeon invited the special education community to be a part of the conversation in

planning for the Academies. SEAC has recommended that the Academies of Loudoun plan to include students with IEP’s by offering a curriculum

focused on base job entry skills and independent living skills as well as a curriculum for a regular vocational track that supports accommodations

for students. Please learn about the Academies of Loudoun and contribute your voice to the conversation. Information about the Academies is

available at the Loudoun County Public Schools main web page www.lcps.org as well as the SEAC page www.lcps.org/seac.

Parents are encouraged to reach out to the Parent Resource Center at www.lcps.org/prc to learn about upcoming programs and workshops of

interest to the disability community and to seek information about LCPS special education programs and services. This is a wonderful parent

resource and parents are urged to utilize the PRC.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 1st, 2014 at 7pm in room 100B of the LCPS Administration Building in Ashburn, Virginia.

Please note that the presentation “Superintendent Dr. Eric Williams – Welcome to LCPS and Perspective on Special Education” will be resched-

uled for a later date.

To stay up to date: LIKE us on Facebook.com/loudounseac, visit our website at www.lcps.org/seac and sign up for our email subscriptions at http://eepurl.com/3q9TL.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a non-polio enterovirus that was first identified in the United States over 50 years ago. Cases have re-cently been confirmed in several states. EV-D68 causes respiratory illness and the virus can be found in respiratory secretions such as saliva, nasal mucus, or sputum. It can be spread from person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or touches surfaces and contaminates them. Mild symptoms of the disease may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, skin rash, mouth blis-ters, and body and muscle aches. There are no anti-viral medications currently available to treat the EV-D68 infection, so thorough hand-washing continues to be the most effective deterrent to illness, fol-lowed by avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. In addition, avoidance of kiss-ing, hugging, and sharing cups or utensils with someone who is sick is important.
